marching across the brooklyn bridge chanting no justice no peace. and the violence in minneapolis prompted a tweet by president donald trump suggesting looters would be shot which was later hidden by twitter in the tweets trump called rioters thugs and said when the looting starts the shooting starts to set the message glorified violence and removed it from view although it can still be accessed by clicking on it the looters should not be allowed to drown out the voices of so many peaceful protesters they hurt so badly what is happening and it's so bad for the state and for their great city so we are working very closely with the justice department we're working with local law enforcement we're working with everybody and we're speaking with the family and hopefully everything can be fairly taken care of. ok joining us now who's honest and had us as

a lot of the people here that are my can. the members they are telling me that they feel angry they feel upset they feel that they yes they think that what happened to george white is wrong but they also feel like you know they don't want to have the community businesses that they rely on that they go to for food are medicine to be . taken down this is people have said you know it's taken a really long time to rebuild this new build lake street because at one point there weren't a lot of shops there weren't a lot of places and now it's been built up by the community and only to have it torn down and looted they just feel a sense of loss and a sense of pain on us and i understand that you've been in the city for many years ago give us an indication if you can of the relationship that people have with the police force in minneapolis. well i've lived in the city for almost 20 years i've seen numerous arrests protests on numerous riots over on the north side of

minneapolis taking place on the freeway which is not too far from here but this feels different the anger that that is out on the streets right now to me feel so much different than from a lot to catskill from germar clark from jesse diamond people. i think that just you know this is just a i think people have felt like you know far too far too much for too long that's what i've been hearing from people on the streets here when you've been talking about in the streets of the city what is the national guard presence like odd thing trying to be discreet are how are they actually showing up on the streets. you know i talked to a couple of national guard people today actually early this morning they've been out since 4 am i mean i think you know they're just you know they're present i think their presence is being felt you know they're guarding some of the businesses

in denver demonstrators echoed the demand for justice already heard in new york and los angeles anger over the treatment of african-americans by the police is not new but right now it is very wrong. in louisville in kentucky the death of george floyd has reopened old wounds with protesters demanding justice for an african-american woman who was shot dead by police 2 months ago. it is this video of the last moment of george floyd's life a police officer kneeling on his neck that is driving the outrage 2 president trump is weighed in calling the protesters thugs and suggesting national guard troops shoot looters the republican president also to game against the city's democratic mayor mayor jacob fry fired back donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis we are strong as hell is this a difficult time period yes but you better be damn sure that we're going to get

through this as the protests and george floyd's name continue to grow the leaders of major cities across the u.s. are hoping that promises of swift justice will be enough to calm tensions john hendren al jazeera chicago well many police across the u.s. have condemned the actions of the 4 officers involved in the death of george floyd but it's just the latest in the series of deaths of black men at the hands of law enforcement that i was on those reports starts with pictures of the incident in minneapolis. the scenes of george fully handcuffed being choked to death by a police officer has led to outrage within the insular tight ranks of the law enforcement community there was unusually quick condemnation on social media a new york police detective said the officer involved brought dishonor to the profession we take over to serve and protect and would like to see that that was the theme on both aspects other police officers had equally pointed words

it's time that we take these bad also as a speech out of gas and start holding them accountable and hold them to the same laws that we expect. and i hope justice prevails and i hope those people are found to be guilty of murder because that's what i was. second i want to say. and we got to change this we've got to break these barriers in these walls and we've got to do what we can as police officers the bigger picture is how the killing of freud is going to complicate police work throughout america already many black communities are distrustful of law enforcement this is only going to make it worse when you see. what should be a routine apprehension become a de facto execution it is it is experience to watch. and former new york police detective keep taylor says there

are systematic issues of race that need to be addressed makes it more difficult for officers interests simply trying to do their job every day. the fact that these. negative incidents that occur do get publicized really brings to the forefront how important it is to address the inequities that occur in our criminal justice system an incident that has left many police officers just as outraged as the people they are sworn to serve and protect many wanting answers and justice gabriels on doe al-jazeera new york dave because a board member of the communities united against police brutality he's joining us on skype from minneapolis thank you very much indeed for being with us let me ask you 1st of all about that response by police officer as to what has happened to george floyd how do you react to the way that social media has been filled with
2:14 am
these comments. nobody in the community is going to believe that those are what the police officers are thinking because we have a long history of police officers protecting their own the blue line of silence the blue wall of silence i don't think those statements are much more sincere than the statements we're getting from the mayor or for the police chief at this time they want to come people down they want to say everything's going to change they arrest one officer we've been chanting at the demonstrations all 4 we've heard these promises before this is built up over years and it's not going to go away with a couple of promises. and we'll come to the element of institutionalisation in a 2nd but we are talking about the police officers around the u.s. who are going on social media showing their faces and making these statements in support of an investigation into the death of george floyd and asking for
2:15 am
prosecutions to be brought against fellow officers. yeah i won't say that all those officers are 'd insincere and there are officers who do really care but when it comes right down to it no officer will ever testify against another officer and so we see that not just the one officer who had his knee on his neck that is the grossest violation but that 3 other officers did nothing about it at the time when it was clear to everyone else on the scene that george floyd was being killed that's what really matters is the actions of the officers and in all the deaths we've seen in minneapolis no officer ever testifies against another so even if their words are sincere it doesn't show in the actions that we've seen here think given and given that let me ask you what your reaction has been to the fact
2:16 am
that the officer has been charged with murder and manslaughter these a very serious charges and it has happened very very quickly which as you have pointed out is unusual in many cases when it comes to incidents like this. and yes this is very unusual and how quickly the officers are fired is very unusual i think part of that is due to this incident being so so horrifying to anybody who watches the video but remember before that video came out in public the police information officer was trying to claim that the officers noted that he was having a medical incident and they assisted him so it was only when the other video came out that they were forced to tell their real story they lied in their original statement because they thought they could get away with it the people who are

saying these things are no more honest now than they were then they just got caught so yes after a particular group is incident like this there's got to want to be a lot of soothing words but we need to see we'll changes institutional changes changes that have been promised to us after the previous deaths and have never happened it's good to get your thoughts on this day of breaking we appreciate it thank you very much indeed thank you. well at a press conference earlier in the day president tom stepped up his rhetoric on china announcing a raft of measures targeting beijing the united states wants an open and constructive relationship with china but it's even that relationship requires us to vigorously defend our national interests the chinese government has continually violated its promises to us and so many other nations these plain facts cannot

be overlooked or swept aside the world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the chinese government. trump announced the u.s. would be cutting ties with the world health organization claiming it was being heavily influenced by china he warned of quote strong actions to take away hong kong special status with the u.s. saying new security laws that struck the territory of its autonomy from china he also announced plans to sanction top chinese officials responsible for eroding hong kong's tone i mean some voters a resident scholar at the american enterprise institute he's joining us now from washington d.c. stan thanks very much indeed for being with us so if i understand it correctly if he pulls the u.s. away from the w.h.o. that gives china more of a chance to get greater influence with the w.h.o. if he revokes hong kong's special trading relationship actually that damages hong
2:19 am
kong more than it damages china what do you think trump is actually trying to achieve with this. i don't think that there is a particularly long term strategy here it's the same government by it's the 5th that we've seen throughout his presidency. as you say obviously by the by withdrawing from the w.h.o. you make china if anything more powerful there i think it's reasonable to be concerned about china's sway over the w h o we've seen w.h.o. ringback officials engage in bizarre contortions to avoid discussing taiwan no the past few months but obviously this approach is not going to help there and the same applies to some extent for the u.s. approach to hong kong what is particularly worrisome i think is that the u.s. really seems to stand alone and it hasn't managed to draw in any of its allies in
2:20 am
dealey either with the w.h.o. it doesn't seem like other countries are following the u.s. at or with hong kong where you know the sanctions that have been announced are vague and as you said it will probably not be particularly meaningful for china as a whole lot to same time really harming hong kong i don't i don't see what this is going to lead to that addresses any of the underlying concerns of course in heading up to the u.s. presidential elections how significant do you think the timing of these announcements is. well obviously the u.s. economy is in shambles there were riots in multiple cities last night that did not address at all during his his formal appearance. i think he's trying to find a target but he's constrained in a sense by by the savior economy he doesn't have that kind of leeway that he had
2:21 am
a couple years ago that engage in very aggressive trade policy you know when the stock market is booming and unemployment was in a store carlos that that's no longer the case and i think that really constrains him in what he can do these are the china. you know and actual results as i said i don't think are going to flow from this especially because the u.s. has just completely abandoned any attempt to work with its european allies or its other asian allies that can change it to contain china just today that metcalfe the german chancellor refused to come to d.c. for the g. 7 in june you know that's not an offer you extend if you if you know it's going to be refused to going to be declined stan is always good to have your views in this so thank you very much stan vogel we appreciate it thank you richard. still ahead on al-jazeera kicked out with nowhere to go in the residence of a slum and bogota fear being a victim in the middle of

a pandemic. hello mainland usa is quite thing down the time being there are some pretty big showers around you can see the drifting off shore the cloud itself here in the northeast is more or less a cult front temperatures that are on the high side in new york and washington worry not to were in toronto but that breeze coming to the northwest is temperatures coming down to a reasonable think of this time of the year eventually to reach the east coast as well and even see of florence not particularly sherry though it's not completely dry either on the pacific coast time has been very high las down to 26 phoenix is to 40 street and there is still a heat warning in santa ana california nevada and some parts of arizona but how being seen 2 tropical cyclones so far for the start of the american season there's

a possibility we'll see something else develop if for the bahamas and at least over bermuda to watch that but anyway as a very showery very wet position at the moment surround the mediterranean and the gulf of mexico fact mexico itself in the forecast have masses of showers and that circulation just south of guatemala may well turn into a tropical disturbance so if you see a lot of write even if it's never officially named that orange call over al salvador for example will produce very likely some pretty significant flooding. teach it strong man is ruling within a fire and faced and the silence from his allies is deafening the us was perfectly happy to trade off the march for sea for security while western media is turning a blind eye when even their own citizens have fallen victim to his repression executions torture or censorship is not acceptable and you won't hear such strong

others are venezuelan migrants they all say they've been suffering greatly during the lockdown being and able to work with other hundreds of families have already been evicted their houses demolished in past weeks and the people here say that the police used excessive force to try and push them out of their houses. if you destroy the houses all we can do is build a shelter with the neighbors well we supposed to go if you don't even have enough to buy food now the minister of housing has at least in theory banned all addictions until the end of june in response to the pandemic but the city out sorry these are saying that these informal houses are illegal and that there hill itself is at risk of a landslide so these people need to go and now but to avoid the kind of clashes that we've seen

a couple of weeks ago local authorities are here today with the police and they're offering people roughly $70.00 a month for the next 3 months as a housing bonus to find something to rant about the community say that definitely not enough and that the only option would be to end up in overcrowded housing with other families which would put them at risk of catching the virus now this shows just how difficult it has been to colombia for colombia to respond to the kind of means that the poorest of the poor have during the lockdown and the pandemic the national government has offered economic help for hundreds of thousands of people some of them have indeed received it but many others like those who live here say they haven't. amnesty international says ethiopia has failed to stop human rights violations despite political reforms introduced by prime minister 2 years ago
