the steven green line continues with calls of fear and hope this was my return to kosovo and the little village of but one decade on i've come back to find out what happened to those hopes and dreams rewind on al-jazeera. demanding justice for george floyd protesters are defying a curfew in the us city of minneapolis after days of anger over a police killing. and officers being charged with murder but the crowds across the country calling for a change in the way america is policed. i'm not matheson this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up donald trump

takes aim at china announcing measures of a coronavirus and the new security bill against hong kong. fears of a food shortage as plagues of locusts destroyed crops in parts of india and pakistan. crowds of protesters are out in cities across the u.s. calling for justice over the death of a black man during in a rest in the city of minneapolis a policeman has been charged with the murder of george floyd but that hasn't quelled the anger in minneapolis it's just gone 9 pm and a curfew came into place just over an hour ago but protest as a showing no signs of abiding by it ignoring threats of jail time on a fine the mayor of minneapolis ordered a curfew after 3 days of protests which is seen buildings burned and looted. in the atlanta protest as of conversion cnn's global headquarters forcing back
5:02 am
police and setting fire to a police car police created a blockade as they tried to disperse the group cnn's windows were smashed and signs were vandalized. a large crowd of people is god outside a stadium in new york holding placards and chanting no justice no peace they down here staged a demonstration outside the supreme court building and marched across the brooklyn bridge and the white house was briefly logged on as protesters took their calls to the country's leader but he eventually broke up the large group hundreds also marched through the streets of the capital let's return it to many opulence allison how to have a is reporting for us from there allison this curfew doesn't seem to be working as far as we can see it's an eerie scene out here right now i am right i'm i'm standing in the middle of the street where formerly there were some national guard and some state minnesota state for trolls what i've been told by our
5:03 am
red chapman. and anchor for c.b.s. local c.b.s. news here is that the national guard is pretty far up lake street that's the street that's just behind me to to the west i'm sorry just right behind me and he said that he thinks that the national guard is going to do a kind of a military flanking tactic where they're going to draw the protesters in and and surround them so we'll see what happens this evening but you're right the curfew went into effect a little over an hour ago and people are still out on the streets although when i was bicycling my way over to this spot because i live in this neighborhood. to streets were empty i mean people or inside because behind all these businesses it's a residential neighborhood. allison give us some indication if you can when we we seeing shots of 2 guys being far protesters is that predominantly the state police that's doing that all has the national guard moved in yet. the national guard is
5:04 am
here made when i talk to one national guard they said that they've been on site for this morning i don't know if you heard but just behind me there were some loud booms it's either them been national guard or the minnesota state patrol shooting up tear gas are in but i can certainly smell it in fact when i was writing over here by i started to water so yeah earlier on and we saw pictures of a great many people who were in as far as i could tell towards the center of the city but they seem to have dispersed and we know where they're moving to. no i did see some people that were on the 35 w. bridge that crosses over the mississippi river so i know that there are some people out there i'm not sure about st paul but yes that's that's where i've seen some crowds just burst through. from where you are at the moment and i realize that with
5:05 am
that there is some tear gas around you so i don't want to keep you for too much longer but from where you are can you see crowds of people or do you get the sense that the crowds are beginning to thin out. right right now there's not a lot of people behind me i don't know how many people are up on lake street but it when i was here earlier there were just there were a few 100 people i mean i would bet a few 100 people but it seemed to be growing i notice people coming down here from the navy from the surrounding streets so definitely a lighter crowd where i'm at but i think that they've moved west lake street for right now alison obviously a great many people in the city who are not taking part in these protests and are just trying to get on with their lives do we have any idea how they're feeling about these protests. i spoke with a couple of people on my way over here at one owens a computer repair shop just down the street from here and all over businesses have
5:06 am
signs that says justice for george lloyd expressing some solidarity but the protesters you know the person that i spoke to at the computer repair shop you know it's a small business he his shirt shop is largely remained intact and you know he is really concerned about people's safety but you know is there regarding his business i spoke with a couple of other people that were sitting out guarding their apartment building a couple of a couple of guys that were there watching over and they said that they felt a little afraid last night but they they hope they hope that with a curfew that things will calm down let's take this slightly wider on us and that we're talking about a situation where trust really was very thin to begin with in the city now it appears to have completely broken down between the police and the residents of the city it's going to take a long time to try and rebuild what little trust there was. i would agree
5:07 am
that i think that's a fair a fair summary a lot of people that i spoke to and i. like those guys behind me that feel the same way that their trust needs to be repaired. and that i think they feel like the 1st step to that is you know where you the arrest. but then also they want the other 3 officers arrested and charged as well so i think that's to show a lot of the people that i've spoken with that's the beginning of repairing trust housen who has been talking to us live from the center of minneapolis where the protests have been happening following the incident involving george floyd and a police officer a few days ago allison thank you very much indeed well dave baking is a board member of the communities united against police brutality he says retraining and institutional changes are needed to address the underlying problems within the us police forces. no officer will ever testify against another
5:08 am
officer and so we see that not just the one officer who had his knee on his neck that is the grossest violation but that 3 other officers did nothing about it at the time when it was clear to everyone else on the scene that george floyd was being killed that's what really matters is the actions of the officers and in all the deaths we have seen in minneapolis no officer ever testifies against another so even if their words are sincere it doesn't show in the actions that we've seen here how quickly the officers were fired is very unusual i think part of that is due to this incident being so so horrifying to anybody who watches the video but remember before that video came out in public the police information officer was trying to
5:09 am
claim that the officers noted that he was having a medical incident and they assisted him so it was only when the other video came out that they were forced to tell the real story they lied in their original statement because they thought they could get away with it the people who are saying these things are no more honest now than they were then they just got caught so yes after a particular group is incident like this there's got to want to be a lot of soothing words but we need to see real changes institutional changes changes that have been promised to us after the previous deaths and have never happened donald trump is cutting u.s. ties with the world health organization claiming it's being influenced by beijing at a press conference the president stepped up his anti chinese restaurant announcing plans to strip hong kong of its special status with the u.s. in response to a new security law alan. official reports. unusually for
5:10 am
a news conference at the white house president only trump opted to use a teleprompter and stuck to the script but in the week where the number of 1000 deaths in the u.s. went through the 100000 mark the president used the occasion to cut ties with the world health organization under terms calling it the ruhani virus china has total control over the world health organization we have detailed the reforms that it must make and engage with them directly but they have refused to act. the president has been angry about china's trade practices since before he took office the protests this week in hong kong over the beatings decision to extend security powers there has added to that anger hong kong has had a special relationship with the u.s. the president wants to punish china and says hong kong special status is no more my announcement today will affect the full range of agreements we have with hong kong
5:11 am
from our extradition treaty to our export controls on dual use technologies and more with few exceptions we will be revising the state department's travel advisory for hong kong to reflect the increased danger of surveillance and punishment by the chinese state security apparatus president also announced he was imposing sanctions on chinese and hong kong officials i think this is the the amount of actions that he and house as well as the severity of actions that he did announce depending on the implementation of these actions this is probably the nuclear option that this initiation of do you think china will react and respond i think china has to respond in this case there are so many actions that the trump initiation announced today that if they don't respond and domestically they leadership risks looking weak to their domestic audience president trump gave
5:12 am
a long list of grievances about china's economic actions there's nothing new there he's done it before what was interesting in his 10 minutes in front of the cameras he made no mention of chinese president xi a man he regards a strong a man he's praised in the past even for his handling of the coronavirus brick. alan fischer al-jazeera at the chinese embassy in washington well david collins joining us live from hong kong david we heard a knowledge of porter actually saying from the center for a new american security saying that china has to respond are we hearing anything from beijing yet well rob the news came in overnight in this part of the world that many were already anticipating it with might bump a earlier announcing that hong kong could no longer be autonomy's from china once this new law comes into place and so prior to that yesterday we heard the hong kong government official who was at that big political meeting in china say whatever the
5:13 am
u.s. does will not affect the enactment of this law in hong kong also the chinese foreign ministry spokesman said before the end of yesterday that the u.s. should stay out of hong china's domestic affairs but what we could likely see a reaction to is the measures that donald trump has announced saying that there will be travel bans on certain chinese officials and sanctions could be placed on any hong kong or mainland chinese government official seen as eroding hong kong's autonomy what we are likely to see is china if you go by what they have done in the past is china retaliating with measures in kind against u.s. officials and analysts say that the u.s. and china tensions are already at a very high point but this just takes it up another notch give you seems as though that hong kong where you are seems to be getting more call top now in a fight that has expanded to the u.s.
5:14 am
and china how are people in hong kong reacting to these statements that are coming out from the white house. well rob it's a very complicated situation in hong kong the city was already divided last year with all the protests and you had a very strong pro-democracy camp and protest camp and then you have the wider public also that were concerned about both the hong kong's freedoms but also about making a living now this measure that allows the u.s. to look into hong kong's autonomy was born out of democracy activist lobbying the u.s. congress to take action against against china eroding hong kong's freedoms and autonomy so what the u.s. did last year was set up this act which passed through congress unanimously which gives them the right to assess hong kong autonomy every year and now the u.s. has deemed tom concert on to me once this national security law comes in not not
5:15 am
separate from mainland china so eroded enough that the u.s. can take action so this is seen as somewhat of a victory for democratic activists human rights activists and protesters and many of those who support the protests but as far as the business community goes this is of great concern hong kong could lose billions of dollars in investments and alice are also saying that this could put hong kong's reputation or status as an international financial hub at risk pummeling hong kong's economy which is already been suffering even more rob riggle pollin giving is that update from hong kong dubious thanks very much indeed. still ahead on al jazeera kicked out with nowhere to go residents of a slum in bogota fear being evicted in the middle of a pandemic. french comic 010 is to slash around $15000.00 jobs after a fall in demand during coronavirus and that.

always been saying that it wants to make sure that it maintains good relationship good diplomatic relationships between ethiopia and itself now over the past few weeks we've seen sudan and if you holding several talks some of them in person here in khartoum or in ethiopia of this via videoconference because of the virus pandemic but they've both been stressing on the fact that their diplomatic relationship should stay on good terms and that they should be able to work out their issues diplomatically and unfortunately over the past few days what happened on the ground on the state in the state of qatar of which borders sudan and ethiopia does not seem to show that there is what is happening with taking place between the 2 leaders or between top officials between the 2 countries is actually being relayed to those on the ground and sudan is saying that if the fighting continues and if the militias do come back to attack backed by the theory an army then they will fight back and this may turn into further violence between the 2 sides amnesty international says ethiopia has failed to stop human rights

are expected to be evicted in coming days despite having nowhere else to go in this fight to the country still being in the middle of the coronavirus last down many of them have a rival here to build this informal housing fleeing the country's internal conflict others are venezuelan migrants they all say they've been suffering greatly during the lockdown being and able to work with other hundreds of families have already been evicted their houses demolished in the past weeks and the people here say that the police used excessive force to try and push them out of their houses. if you destroy the houses all we can do is build a shelter with the neighbors well we supposed to go if you don't even have enough to buy food now the minister of housing has at least in theory banned all addictions until the end of june in response to the pandemic but the city out sorry

these are saying that these informal houses are illegal and that there hill itself is at risk of a landslide so these people need to go and now but to avoid the kind of clashes that we see in a couple of weeks ago local authorities are here today with the police and they're offering people roughly $70.00 a month for the next 3 months as a housing bonus to find something to rant about the community say that the definitely not enough and that the only option would be to end up in overcrowded housing with other families which would put them at risk of catching the virus now this shows just how difficult it has been to colombia for colombia to respond to the kind of means that the poorest of the poor have during the lockdown and and the pandemic the national government has offered economic help for hundreds of thousands of people some of them have indeed received it but many others like those
