every generation promised. hours. protests spread to dozens of u.s. cities over the death of a black man who was pinned to the ground by police. hello i'm come all santamaria here in doha with the world news from al-jazeera an officer has been charged with george floyd's murder just added to the anger about the way racial minorities are treated by its president donald trump though he has largely
10:01 am
ignored the domestic turmoil and instead announces he's terminating america's relationship with the w.h.o. . real people could have eaten it. and one of the charities and volunteers filling the gaps as britain's welfare system is overwhelmed by corona says. outside the white house and from coast to coast protests and violence have spread to more u.s. cities over the death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer that officer derrick chauvin has now been charged with george floyd's murder but it's done little to dampen the anger as we take you around the country starting in minneapolis itself where floyd died while being arrested on monday demonstrators defied a curfew and a large deployment of the national guard a bank was set on fire and a department store was looted as well. this is the largest civilian deployment in
10:02 am
minnesota history that we have out there today and quite candidly right now we do not have the numbers we cannot arrest people when we're trying to hold ground because of the sheer size the dynamics and the wanton violence that's coming out there but as you've seen there's already shots being fired back at our people this arson that is taking place puts many people at risk are firefighters are specifically and very open to target ok so that was minneapolis this is the nation's capital washington d.c. the white house actually went into a brief lockdown as crowds for with police and in atlanta georgia the c.n.n. news channel's headquarters came under attack police cars were targeted as well prompting a furious response from atlanta's mayor you are disgracing our city you are disgracing the life of george floyd in every other person who has been killed in this country this is not a protests this is not in the spirit of martin luther king jr this is
10:03 am
chaos a protest has a purpose when dr king was assassinated we didn't do this to our city. has spread out to the west coast as well there's some of the crowds in los angeles some of them chanting i can't breathe which were some of floyd's final words as he was kept pinned to the ground by his. minneapolis is still the epicenter though and john hendren is there for us as it just goes past 2 in the morning there john bring us up to date. well right now we witnessed some of that arson some of it is right behind us you heard the governor talking about that there is a fire a lot of they're. throwing water on to a building that had been on fire if you look at the top you might still see some of the flames still burning in one of several buildings over here you can see firefighters going for some more water apparently there have been a number of buildings that have caught fire here and these are the national guard
10:04 am
troops who have been escorting the firefighters we're also seeing police who are telling people to leave this spot right now so bear with us for a moment. but those are the national guard troops the governor is talking about he's talking about adding about a 1000 more of them and it's clear there just wasn't enough security here we watch buildings be looted we watch numerous buildings be set on fire we saw. demonstrators protesters call them what you like throwing up barricades between them and the police and we saw a confrontation between a number of demonstrators and state police with guns that shot rubber bullets and ended with tear gas so security has has been a problem here and you would think that after several days of is it would not be a problem but they've had trouble figuring this out apparently the national guard are moving behind us. so security has been a major issue tonight and it's especially important that this happened on the 1st
10:05 am
night of the curfew curfew started at 8 pm it's been several hours since then and as you can see there a lot of people out these guard troops are still working and there are fires all over this part of south minneapolis. john i mentioned earlier has been an arrest and a charge of the police officer who appears to be responsible for george ford still clearly it's what people will want but does it do much to quell the anger. well part of the problem was a day ago there was this announcer there were going to be a major press conference with federal prosecutors and local prosecutors and f.b.i. agents and everyone was i should say everybody a lot of people were expecting that to result in criminal charges it didn't though they said we're investigating let us work on it and then last night you had a number of a violent incidents clashes between police and demonstrators so 24 hours later they
10:06 am
announced charges against derrick show vaughn sorry i'm just looking for the police who are obviously moving on on somebody here they're trying to clear out this area . and those charges were serious charges of murder and manslaughter and they say they were the quickest that these prosecutors had ever brought charges against at least officers but the problem is people here in the streets they want all 4 of those officers to face serious charges and right now it's only one and there's a lot of dissatisfaction with that and anger in the streets our photographer was attacked a little while ago and. most of the protesters have been peaceful or have been and many is 8000 in the streets here but it's been a little rough from time to time and that is why the governor is calling in the largest deployment of national guard troops in the state's history to try to quell that violence and discontent. it is what protesters across the u.s.
10:07 am
have been demanding the officer who held his knee on george floyd's neck has been arrested many amps police officers are chopping has been charged by the head of the county attorney's office with murder and with manslaughter as minneapolis st still smoldering following a 3rd night of riots the student governor is hoping the news will calm the violence in the streets minneapolis and st paul are on fire the fire still smoldering our streets. the ashes are symbolic of decades and generations of a pain of anguish unheard much like we failed to hear. george floyd. as he pleaded for his life as the world watched it is my expectation that justice for the officers involved in this will be swift that it will come in a timely manner that it will be fair that is what we've asked for governor tim walz
10:08 am
also called the arrest of a black c.n.n. journalist and his crew early friday by state police officers unacceptable i take full responsibility there is absolutely no reason something like this should happen calls were made immediately this is a very public apology to that team it should not happen i failed you last night and that in minneapolis riot police stand ready to confront a community that feels it's been betrayed national guard soldiers have also arrived in the city requested by a mayor who is under pressure to bring the violence under control. this was a police station in flames on thursday night and anger directed at those who swear to serve and protect escalated not far away more burning shops looting and violence . protests have spread across the u.s. in denver demonstrators echoed the demand for justice already heard in new york and los angeles anger over the treatment of african-americans by the police is not new
10:09 am
but right now it is very wrong. in louisville in kentucky the death of george floyd has reopened old wounds with protesters demanding justice for an african-american woman who was shot dead by police 2 months ago. it is this video of the last moment of george floyd's life a police officer kneeling on his neck that is driving the outrage 2 president trump is weighed in calling the protesters thugs and suggesting national guard troops shoot looters the republican president also to game against the city's democratic mayor mayor jacob fry fired back donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis we are strong as hell is this a difficult time period yes but you better be damn sure that we're going to get through this as the protests and george floyd's name continue to grow the leaders of major cities across the u.s. are hoping that promises of swift justice will be enough to calm tensions. to let
10:10 am
me put this into perspective this is a state that is just ended its lockdown over from the coronavirus pandemic and now here on this 1st day of being on the lockdown there is a curfew that began 8 pm and that curfew was not held in this part of town it was an honor despite the presence of hundreds of troops you've got the national guard troops that you see behind us there were hundreds if not more possibly low thousands of protesters hard to tell because they're scattered all over the city and they lit numerous fires people let numerous fires i don't know if it was necessarily the demonstrators and you can see one of them being put out behind us so this is a city that has had a. an awfully rough week there's sort of a demoralization of big feeling of george floyd and then there's the devastation of the city itself and now you've got the governor apologizing for the 2nd time in one
10:11 am
day for being unprepared after several days of rioting here in this city so it is far from under control we'll be here to report on it as the hours where are john hendren and his team doing a great job in minneapolis in the early hours thank you jon now while all this is going on top trump is chosen not to speak about it in fact instead he announced the u.s. would be causing all ties with the world health organization accusing it of being influenced by beijing the president also confirmed an end to washington special treatment of hong kong after china approved its new security law for the territory all the details now with alan fischer. unusually for a news conference at the white house president only trump opted to use a teleprompter and stuck to the script but in the week where the number of 1000 deaths in the u.s. went through the 100000 mark the president used the occasion to cut ties with the world health organization and returned to calling it virus china has total control
10:12 am
over the world health organization we have detailed the reforms that it must make and engage with them directly but they have refused to act. the president has been angry about china's trade practices since before he took office the protests this week in hong kong beatings decision to extend security powers there has added to that anger hong kong has had a special relationship with the u.s. the president wants to punish china and says hong kong special status is no more my announcement today will affect the full range of agreements we have with hong kong from our extradition treaty to our export controls on dual use technologies and more with few exceptions we will be revising the state department's travel advisory for hong kong to reflect the increased danger of surveillance and punishment by the chinese state security apparatus president also announced he was imposing sanctions
10:13 am
on chinese and hong kong officials but i think this is the the amount of actions that he and house as well as the severity of actions that he did announce depending on the implementation of these actions this is probably the nuclear option that this is an initiation of do you think china will react and respond i think china has to respond in this case there are so many actions that the trump initiation announced today that if they don't respond and domestically they leadership risks looking weak to their domestic audience president trump gave a long list of grievances about china's economic actions there's nothing new there he's done it before what was interesting in his 10 minutes in front of the cameras he made no mention of chinese president xi a man he regards as strong a man he's praised in the past even for his handling of the coronavirus brick alan
10:14 am
fischer al-jazeera at the chinese embassy in washington saturday afternoon in hong kong his devika pollen for stevia we hear it all from the president's perspective there from the u.s. perspective i'm wondering what are the implications of hong kong losing this special trade status and what the reaction will be like there and in beijing. that's right the in berkeley implications could be wide ranging depending on the details the u.s. has not quite spelled out what the measures will be there is a wide number of. choices given to them on how they could implemented and what they could target but it was highly anticipated we've had reaction just before that announcement from officials in hong kong who say that regardless of what the u.s. the hong kong security law will be enacted hong kong secretary of justice has said these are 2 very small separate things that the wall will go ahead and of course the chinese ministry of foreign affairs has told the u.s.
10:15 am
to stay out of hong kong's domestic china's domestic affairs now what we are likely to see if we go for from the past in the kind of reaction we've seen between the u.s. and china is some kind of a tit for tat retaliation they could retaliate to the u.s. president president's measure saying that certain chinese officials will be banned from entering the u.s. they'll be travel bans also sanctions on government officials in hong kong and in china who are seen to erode hong kong's autonomy they also could take other actions against u.s. companies the u.s. has also outlined that chinese companies will also come under even more of a magnifying glass and mainland chinese students also could also face being unable to go back graduate students are unable to go back to the u.s. so these are the kinds of things that china could retaliate on and analysts say will most likely take action on more about reaction on the streets in hong kong
10:16 am
we've been looking at some pictures there from earlier in the week of of protests and you know there's been protests for months in hong kong what are you expecting going forward. people in hong kong are just shocked pretty much at how quickly the developments have come across last few weeks ago china announced or last week trying to announce it would enact this national security law which many on the pro-democracy front and many of the protests are see as a way of closing any discourse in hong kong limiting freedom of speech and once again putting many of them at risk of going to jail or criminalizing them for speaking out against china and now we have the u.s. coming out and saying that they are going to impose these sanctions because they no longer see hong kong as autonomy as from mainland china although i need to point out the reason this has come about is because of a law which many of hong kong protesters have been lobbying and pro-democracy
10:17 am
activists have been lobbying in congress was for the u.s. to be able to take stock of hong kong's autonomy and punish those that cross it or endanger it and so because of that we've had the u.s. reacts in this way saying that hong kong is no longer thomas from china once this national security law comes into place so the kind of reaction will see for i guess pro-democracy activists for people you know championing human rights it's somewhat of a victory but for hong kong's economy and many business leaders and many of the businesses here there's a lot of concern this could mean billions of dollars in investments from hong kong leaving hong kong many companies also leaving home kong and hong kong's financial secretary has said they are still trying to gauge what the u.s. will do and they're preparing for every or any scenario to try and protect hong kong's economy giving up on him in hong kong thank you. and a moment we will return to the protests in the u.s. and in fact breaking the blue wall of silence what some police are actually saying
10:18 am
about the actions of the 4 officers involved in george floyd's fatal arrest and kicked out with nowhere to go why people living in a slum in colombia's capital theah been evicted during the pandemic. of the hellers an even more distinct difference now between the weather in eastern europe and the weather further west it may not look very much on here but the great live cloud you saw some lightning strikes in this whole area is prone to big thunderstorms the concentration has been just western russia ukraine is cutting back through valorous and into poland it's a sort of low pressure area temps a low underneath only $14.15 in kiev you might get 16 if you're lucky whereas in complete contrast not quite at record values in the u.k.

in france even in germany reports show we certainly touch them and temperatures at least a high in iberia this won't change very much in the next 24 hours the weekend still looks like the west the spit will be the same if anything the cooler is moving further west vienna is not looking good for crosswise in fact we take you through sunday monday and tuesday 14 degrees does improve to 21 on there abouts but you've got some storms over showers at least the 1st 2 days in the forecasts that'll happen in the european play which means that don't much going on in the mediterranean or a few showers around still in tunisia less so geria or morocco less than there were the on shore breeze isn't making much difference attention tripoli it's $31.00 here which beats kyra. frank assessments tourism but the income stream is dead in the water what's been the result seen poaching go up quite significantly informed opinions there has been

a very aggressive political rhetoric that has become very normal in israeli society in-depth analysis of the day's global headlines it's time for new policy to say countries that we cannot all be disintegrating but it's great to meet this the leading people we call continues inside story on al-jazeera. the top stories on al-jazeera this hour and protests some of the violence have been going on in several u.s. cities demanding justice for george floyd a black man killed in police custody in minnesota national guard has been deployed

in minneapolis with 4 died on monday. minneapolis officer derek chauvin has been arrested and charged with his murder video captured in pressing his knee on george floyd's neck and on the trunk was announce the u.s. is cutting ties with the world health organization accusing it of being influenced by beijing u.s. president also confirmed washington would end its special treatment of hong kong after china approved a new security you know. or not top story and some u.s. police officers have spoken out condemning the actions of those involved in george floyd's death and that sort of condemnation is pretty rare and is on the reports. the scenes of george fully handcuffed being choked to death by a police officer has led to outrage within the insular tight ranks of the law enforcement community there was unusually quick condemnation on social media a new york police detective said the officer involved brought dishonor to the profession we take over to serve and protect and would like to see that that

officer. on both aspects other police officers had equally pointed words it's time that we take these bad off as a speak out against and start holding them accountable and hold them to the same laws that we expect. and i hope justice prevails and i hope those people are found to be guilty of murder because that's what i was. second i want to say and we've got to change this we've got to break these barriers in these walls and we've got to do what we can as police officers the bigger picture is how the killing of freud is going to complicate police work throughout america already many black communities are distrustful of law enforcement this is only going to make it worse when you see. what should be a routine apprehension become a de facto execution it is it is

experience to watch. and former new york police detective keep taylor says there are systematic issues of race that need to be addressed makes it more difficult for officers interests simply trying to do their job. the fact that these. negative incidents that occur do get publicized really brings to the forefront how important it is to address the inequities that occur in our criminal justice system an incident that has left many police officers just as outraged as the people they are sworn to serve and protect many wanting answers and justice gabriels on doe al jazeera new york protesters have fought security forces in lebanon capital as they gathered around the interior ministry earlier demonstrators clashed with supporters of the parliament speaker outside his home in

a separate attributes these anti-government protests began last year of a widespread corruption and mismanagement of the economy the world health organization has denounced the killing of 8 aid workers during an attack on a clinic in somalia they were kidnapped by an unknown armed group outside mogadishu the government says attacks on humanitarian workers are threatening people's access to badly needed an aid during the pandemic. the people living in a colombian slum of facing eviction despite having nowhere to go during lockdown wealth or it is in the capital bogota have declared their hillside homes as illegal . he is there for us. more than 100 families live in this hillside slum on the southern outskirts of bogota are expected to be evicted in coming days despite having nowhere else to go in this fight to the country still being in the middle of the coronavirus log down many of them have

a rival here to build this informal housing fleeing the country's internal conflict others are venezuelan migrants they all say they've been suffering greatly during the lockdown being and able to work other hundreds of families have already been evicted their houses demolished in the past weeks and the people here say that the police used excessive force to try and push them out of their houses. if you destroy the houses all we can do is build a shelter with the neighbors well we supposed to go if we don't even have enough to buy food now the minister of housing has at least in theory banned all addictions until the end of june in response to the pandemic that the city out sorry these are saying that these informal houses are illegal and that the hill itself is at risk of a landslide so these people need to go and now but to avoid the kind of clashes that

we've seen a couple of weeks ago local authorities are here today with the police and they're offering people roughly $70.00 a month for the next 3 months as a housing bonus to find something to rant about the community say that they're finitely not enough and that the only option would be to end up in overcrowded housing with other families which would put them at risk of catching the virus. now this shows just how difficult it has been at the columbia for columbia to respond to the kind of unease that the poorest of the poor have during the lockdown and and the pandemic the national government has offered economic help for hundreds of thousands of people some of them have indeed received it but many others like those who live here say they haven't look at the u.k. now where coronavirus numbers are trending down but charities say they're seeing a sharp rise in people needing the services so many were already struggling to get

by before the pandemic now volunteers are trying to help parents with babies who can't afford nappies and others going days without food or sleep with this report now from stoke on trent. and you read me emphasize enough is that. if you want to know what the sharp end of the coronavirus crisis looks like now then take a look in here it isn't a health care issue stoke on trent hasn't seen as many cases as other parts of the u.k. it's what weeks of isolation has done to so many people. mark is a barrister by profession but with the law courts closed he's given his time over to taking supplies to people who have no means of getting their hands on anything he's been asked to deliver to emma and her children she suffers from anxiety and can't leave the house the facts contained enough to keep them going for a fortnight and how they need it it would be very difficult yeah. maybe case what the software has been to probably go without food to make sure the kids have got.

to be after them up before the next stop is heartrending claire has 2 boys aged 2 and 4 they both have chronic lung conditions if they left the house and her husband could kill their sons. i mean it is no exaggeration to say that you could be instances over the whole of the year and. about that she is in patients have got through made and sold vaccine in the next year if they get paid for it it will kill them it would kill them. these are just 2 of the 130 drops the volunteers would do the day we met them we have had people that have not eaten in days because they cannot get the food they simply can't get the food they don't have the welfare and it's all very well for the government to say well we have a welfare system like universal credit that depends upon the bureaucracy to be able to kick him straight away and hope that it's not there. the good news part of all

this is the level of donations is astounding castles of essentials for mothers and babies are arriving all day some from the public others from supermarkets there's a push on for the u.k. to be more positive with the summer here and virus cases falling but for many people there's far less cause for optimism i think it's really jarring about all this other newspaper headlines this say that britain is about to go back to work and things are going back to normal well that may be true for many people but clearly there is now a whole section of the community in this country which could barely cope before coronavirus and now is genuinely in suffering so i hear it or actually hayley who set this place up well before the virus changed everything is now running at least 700 delivers a week and every week it increases she's worried about what happens when the government announces things have gone back to normal the local businesses the small businesses those at them fail at all of such ups for them it isn't going to be back to normal so for us to demand is going to stay like this for a lot longer well do i think for you 3 or 4 of them take many months ago policy
