promote the violence john hendren spent the night among the protesters and begins our coverage from where it all started in minneapolis. a curfew and a murder charge against a police officer failed to bring calm to minneapolis. the city's new curfew beginning 8 pm some protesters responded by setting buildings on fire hundreds of others continued to peacefully protest the death of a black man george floyd after his arrest by a white policeman. also severely children who was fired shortly after floyd's arrest on monday 'd has now been charged with his murder but it's made little difference on the city's turbulent south sunne. demonstrators defied the curfew and

a large deployment of the national guard some took out their anger on businesses such as the department store and occasionally journalists. others lined up to challenge police who answered with tear gas but failed to control the unrest these national guard troops have been blocking roads and they've been protecting firefighters and they've been putting out the many fires you can see one of them back there but the governor says there simply haven't been enough of them and that's why i'm standing in moore i'm authorizing and talking to general johnson to fully mobilize the minnesota national guard an action that has never been taken in 164 year history of the minnesota national guard so let's be very clear the situation in minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of george floyd it is about attacking civil society. instilling fear and disrupting our great cities from coast to coast protests and violence have spread to more u.s.

on the ground right now but i don't see any national guard troops out right now right now i'm on westlake streets which is sustained a lot of the damage the reporter in a in a previous package talked about so what i'm hearing and seeing on the ground i'm sure you can see people passing by me who i'm some with brick homes and on bicycles i'm pretty much cleaning up the city after last night's unrest so i guess i mean the feeling right now on the street is that there has to be a turning point that there needs to be some protection for some of these so all of these businesses that are here along the street there are mostly small businesses and what kind of sense are you getting from people about what will happen in the next few hours in the city. i think well earlier this morning i was at a meeting over in a park nearby where the city councilwoman alondra kano or the 9th ward city

councilwoman she was a meeting with about a probably about between 500000 community members and they were coming up with a plan to keep their neighborhood safe in case the violence and unrest spilled out from the commercial board or into the residential neighborhoods because you have to remember that this street even though it's you know largely commercial a couple blocks north and south it's resin it's was in that show it's houses it's apartment buildings so community members here in this neighborhood feel very on edge they feel very unsafe and they want to come up with a plan to kind of. you know guard each other on and keep you can even say and what are they telling you about how they plan on keeping their communities safe . i think there's going to be people out watching their block i there is going to be they set up like

a little text message tree between them there's an app that they've downloaded to use just face it you know basic like community members organizing together to do that and i think that there is an acknowledgment that a lot of the people causing this violence the governor himself said that a lot of people causing this violence are not from these communities all right alison thank you for what updates from minneapolis. on the u.s. president donald trump spoke earlier about the protests and said he is preparing to deploy the national military. we get out of our military there very quickly they've got to be tough they've got to be role they've got to be respected because these people didn't keep up it's a lot of radical left dead people and they've got to be taught that you can't do that so i'm going now to watch a great lord of the hour we do let's bring in our white house correspondent kimberly halkett socom trying deploy the military. look this is

a nuanced argument but in short no according to an act of 1988 it's called the posse come a thomas act it really limits federal military authority when it comes to enforcing domestic policies essentially what this is is that the federal troops could be called in for support if requested and that's a very key word in the other key word is support but the bottom line is they don't have policing authority so they could come in and they could build barricades they could hand out water bottles but they can't go grab people off the street and so essential this is the fine line now that so the u.s. president is correct when he says you know that there could be military there to support if requested but the bottom line is the president is not sort of stating the new out nuance of this that there is no policing authority now in the midst of all of this the u.s. attorney general has spoken in the last hour you played

a bit of a sound bite there essential e making the argument that they feel that potentially that if there is another night of violence they're pointing the finger at who may be responsible arguing that it is far left radical groups with anti felt like tactics is the u.s. president said who is responsible for all of this the u.s. attorney general william barr also pointing out that as we talk about federal law saying that it is a federal crime to cross state lines of these are outside groups for example going to minneapolis that is a federal crime to cross state lines to incite or participate in rioting so clearly some strong messages being sent by the trumpet ministration in anticipation of what could be another very tense violent night not just in minneapolis but across the country yet and we saw protests right outside of the white house as well overnight and some people saying that the president himself was seems to be encouraging more protests outside the white house and this time by his own supporters. there's no

question one of the president's tweets seemed to be a rallying cry for for supporters or even rioters on protesters from the conservative side in other words what we saw on friday evening was sort of anti trump protests out in lafayette park across from the white house at times it escalated to the point that there was secret service holding the line with riot gear on there was a tagging of the treasury building graffiti that's on the white house campus so there's already preparations underway but it's the president who instead of sort of trying to tamp down this violence has actually called out his own supporters to stage a counter protest he said i understand it's magen night at the white house question mark magen meaning meaning make america great again a 2016 campaign slogan essentially there's no other way to interpret this then this is the president perhaps calling out his supporters whether or not that will happen

you know 1st of all everyone's talked about it's the purse commercial mission and it's the 1st launch u.s. soil since 2011 is going to mean great economic benefits for for the united states will and will not be paying money to russia to launch our astronauts. and it also is the 1st mission manned mission of a new spacecraft since the 1981 when the space shuttle but today off i'd also like to say that it means something else to me personally and i think to people around the world not we've had so much bad news over the last couple months so many deaths and this is that a glimpse of good news something that there is a better future that lies ahead of us that there's more than just the peanut and suffering that we've all experience so i think it means a lot for us just to have

a positive glimpse of hope for the future i hear what you're saying but i got to ask you this since i have you with us and you are a doctor as well i mean as you say and we're in the middle of a pandemic and there have been a lot of her reffing deaths in the u.s. and right across the world and does the pandemic complicate the launch at all so you think that it's the right time to be doing this type of one's. well i think it is i think we need something like this as a physician for the last 2 months i've been treating patients with coronavirus in my hospital and my mind is just been focused on that and for me personally just having something that gets my mind off the just the suffering that i've seen means a whole lot we need to have hope for the future and i think that this is things like this can help us out that whole what do you say to the factor what does it

mean to you rather that this is private at space x. and not strictly nonstop well it means it means a lot of means that we can allow the operations and management of missions to the space station to commercial on a process and it means that it turns out that they can do it at a fraction of the cost what nasa has been able to do in the past and that means that it can free up nasa to do the types of things that. nasa is really expert in that's deep space exploration. manned exploration moon things that promise and it's not profitable for private industry to do at this time nasa can concentrate on those things and it's its historic strengths in fields like aeronautics climate change etc all right we'll leave it there thank you very much
