5:00 am
streets of rage thousands of people demonstrate in cities right across the u.s. over the death of george floyd in minneapolis. hello i'm daryn jordan this is al-jazeera bringing you extended coverage of that unrest in the united states at the death of an unarmed black man in minneapolis for a 4th day there's been violent protests across the u.s. from new york to los angeles we have reporters standing by in 5 major cities we'll go to them live in a moment but 1st let's take a look at what's been happening across the country well as night begins to fall curfews are now being enforced in more than a dozen cities los angeles atlanta portland denver all among those restricting
5:01 am
movement to avoid more violent protests but in minneapolis just like last night people are defying those orders and continuing to make their voices heard on the streets in los angeles a police cruiser was set on fire other demonstrations of unhealed in miami and chicago. scuffles a broken up between police and protesters in new york where demonstrations are continuing into the night earlier a police car was set on fire the day before thousands of people protested outside the city's supreme court near the brooklyn bridge and outside a sports arena. president trump meanwhile has offered to send the national military to minneapolis and pledged to put an end to what he called mob violence but his comments haven't stopped people from gathering in large numbers that his front door this was the scene in front of the white house an hour ago where police set up barricades in an attempt to stop protesters from advancing meanwhile in minnesota where george floyd died the governor says he's fully mobilizing the national guard
5:02 am
for the 1st time in the state's history but warns he still doesn't have enough troops to him waltz has also called on people to do their part to stop the violence . i can tell you that you'll see the best of minnesotans rising you'll see opportunities for people to show the best of who we are and we simply asked for cooperation to help us reestablish order on our streets to make it clear that the force that has been put on the ground is there for the long haul. that this is not a place where violence in his anyway going to step on or dilute the message that we've got work to do around racial injustices we've got work to do to bring justice for george lodge there was john hendren is on the scene in minneapolis where a curfew has just come into effect john so 2 we're looking at these pictures now with you we know the curfews come into effect but people obviously defying that. were on there and forgive me we are running away from tear gas which i'm breathing
5:03 am
as we speak these are the rubber coated pellets that police have been firing they've taken over the area where the protesters are using as their base. and what we're doing now is frankly running away while the police move in on us. the protesters had completely taken over this site that was occupied 1 by police now what they're doing is building. makeshift barricades right there trying to stop the police but there are a 1000 more national guard troops here than we were here 24 hours ago that makes $700.00 in total in addition to thousands of state police and others and this is become a battle for turf policing and hit a number of people with these some of them have been hurt fairly badly and what they're trying to do is to end several days of siege charges against one of those police officers a murder charge against him daryn show is his name that didn't satisfy the crowd
5:04 am
they want charges against all 4 of them so this is the result and john we've been talking to you all night about this palpable sense of anger across many cities in the african-american community yet another black man being killed by white policeman what are people telling you what's the underlying feeding there on the streets. well there is a theme of impatience in anger because it keeps happening it happened to michael brown in ferguson missouri it happened to trayvon martin in florida it happens in city after city i can't tell you how many of these events i have covered where police have killed an unarmed black man and once again here in this case there is some satisfaction that one officer has been charged but they want all 4 officers to be charged and more is more than that aaron but they really want is for these incidents to stop and that's why the group black white lives matter formed
5:05 am
and that's why we're still are seeing these kinds of protests all across the country today there's just a sense that people are fed up. and you are talking about the governor calling for the national guard to be mobilized fully for the 1st time in the state's history so what sort of police presence and security force presence are you seeing on the streets and is that likely to make the situation even worse. i don't know if you can see them because we've we've had obviously had to go away they've been firing at us but. there are hundreds of police that presence is very strong they came in in force they blew smoke they headed there their entry and then they began firing tear gas and these rubber pellets. so the police presence here is far stronger than i saw it a day before and that maybe because they've got a 1000 more national guard troops to help them want to join hands on the line for
5:06 am
us in minneapolis john stay safe thanks for talking to us we'll come back to that later in the program let's go to dave. who's now live for us in new york it seems the situation across the city is very different from place to place tell us what's been happening. yeah it's really. not but if you. you know. a matter where you are and this is. what you're getting. you're getting routes of people coming out of the fire department. i'm sorry about that just give us one second obviously as you can tell it's pretty chaotic out here right now. so there will. as you can see it's pretty good and chaotic out here right now i don't need to explain that there are groups of protesters there are protesters that are sort of playing a cat and mouse game the police will be here for one minute i were in union square
5:07 am
there's protesters that are down on this side of the story and. one time you'll see police in an area here. and blocking off some streets and then the police are going to move and then the protesters will move to another area night has fallen here in new york city so it's getting a little. unpredictable i guess is the right word to say but just a few minutes ago this was a pretty tense standoff with protesters and some police and now it is moving into different areas if you look down this street you see more sirens over there this is how it's been for about the last hour. there's just the police are moving around to where ever they need to be or to where ever an incident is happening at that very moment in brooklyn we've heard of some clashes with police and some protesters we've also heard some other clashes in other parts of the city but right now the bottom line is new york city is really a city in the middle of fog right now because it's really hard to make out exactly
5:08 am
what's happening except exit where you're standing at that very moment quite frankly. we know that new york city is one of the coronavirus. so what sort of official reaction have we seen from the governor from the men who've been by public during the pandemic. the mayor and the governor of new york and now we are yeah we are thank you. the mayor and the governor of new york are saying that they support the protesters they support the protest movement that they want justice as well but the bottom line is these are angry streets right now . there's appear to be some crashes just down the street we're hearing some flash bangs this is. going to after 10 pm here in new york it appears it appears that we have quite a long night ahead of us here i don't mind as most of the people that i speak to out on the streets young people and they say quite frankly they don't want to hear from politicians right now they want to get their anger out yet again just
5:09 am
a final point on the new yorkers of course remember the case of donna back in 2014 a black man unarmed black man also killed by a white man. yeah that's right 2014 eric gardner unarmed black man who was it was tackled by some police he was taken to the ground and he was he was saying i can't brief and there's cell phone video of that that led to the black lives matter movement that was started right here in new york so a lot of people here a lot of people here. know that they remember that and police violence quite frankly is very raw here in new york city you can hear bangs behind me i don't quite know what that is. clearly this is a situation now in new york where things are probably not turning for the better or i gave it as on the life for us there in new york thank you let's bring in rosa clemente from albany new york she's a community organizer and black lives but protest rosa we're watching dramatic
5:10 am
scenes austrians here of the rest of the protests right across new york we understand you a tear gassed. at a protest tell us what happens you. you know and 1st can i please correct your correspondent blacklist founder did not start at the air arnor blacklist matters started after the acquittal of george zimmerman it was founded by 3 black women and it was found those in california i have to say that because you know we have to be correct in this history i'm in albany new york it's one i have thought was away from new york city. and i was just at a protests here albany is a very poor city a very. policed city a very violent police force unfortunately in even international news and news in the united states of america everybody sees new york city as the epicenter but upstate new york city has some of the most violent police and some of the most
5:11 am
violent killings and harassment decades so i was there covering as a as an independent journalist and there was maybe a crowd of 75 and the 1st thing the police did was not only come on horses surround us begin to go flash grenades they tear gas and pepper sprayed us right now and i know in albany new york there might be some fires started and a lot of young angry black and brown people and they're not just angry about this they're angry about everything that has been happening before george floyd but i think your audience would also understand that in a global pandemic where we're the epicenter capitalism is also being laid bare ended you know we're talking about people address and redress and in new york state governor cuomo and the mayor of new york bill de blasio have been the
5:12 am
worst when it comes to ever ever inciting a police officer rosa both of them always side with the police let me let me just stick with this issue of the feelings within the black community because clearly people are streaming on. again you know another black man has been killed by a white policeman how would you describe the underlying palpable feeding the in albany. and also in many other u.s. cities where protests are taking place. because it's not george floyd every 28 hours in the united states of america an african american native person south asian person or brown person latino are killed by the police every 28 hours george florida unfortunately was something we had to watch for 9 minutes but we could talk about the ana taylor. who was working during the global pandemic where police entered her house while her and her boyfriend were sleep they thought they were
5:13 am
being run out and her body was so riddled with bullets and this is last month in louisville kentucky that they had a hard time even putting her back together i can name you. tony make day a black tranced man that was just killed 2 days ago by the police in mentions and i could spend 5 hours a week you all and i could not even answer or we wouldn't even go through the list . multiple police killings rosa let me get a final thought from you we know that one of the police officers involved in this george curry paste been arrested but of course that hasn't stopped the violence so what is the end game here for the protest as them can protest really bring about change because as you've been showing us these police killings are still happening . they have to bring about change now this this is good not only a tipping point it's an explosion and on within against this global pandemic until all those cops are arrested until they go to trial until they get jail time and
5:14 am
then serve that jail time i think we're going to be seeing this a lot more for many many weeks here in the united states rosa coming time for a good to get your thoughts here on al-jazeera thank you very much indeed for talking to us thank you art us turn our attention now to chicago where the mayor addressed the media about how poorly president trumps one of the protests rocking the country. his goal is to polarize to destabilize local government inflames racist urges and we can absolutely not let him prevail and i will code what i really want to say to donald trump it's 2 words it begins with f. and it ends with you. i will not remain silent while this man cynically tries to turn this incredibly painful moment into one for his own
5:15 am
political gain all right natasha the name joins us live now in chicago natasha says some pretty colorful choice words there from the governor about trump but what motive she have to say. actually adair and i want to bring you up to speed on some rapidly moving developments we are now under curfew in chicago until further notice we're 15 minutes into a curfew everyone received text alerts on their phone police we were at a different location we moved it's a commercial corridor police and patrol cars were going up and down the street i spoke to a police officer who tells me that there are protests throughout the city on lake shore drive which is the main north south artery in downtown chicago in front of trump tower it's unclear at this time from the police officer if things are getting rockets as they did mid afternoon today and overnight. last night into
5:16 am
saturday but what we do know from looking at twitter is that it appears that things are ratcheting up again let's walk you back a little and tell you that overnight into early saturday morning more than 100 people were arrested a dozen police officers were injured a dozen squad cars damaged people regrouped at 2 pm this afternoon at the federal building in downtown chicago at one point there it's estimated there were 3000 people they began marching down another commercial corridor then groups wintered off and at trump tower there was another group they were kneeling down on the ground again that's a reference to the fact that a police officer who is charged with 2nd degree murder and 3rd degree manslaughter in minneapolis for kneeling on the neck of 46 year old george floyd. and him dying as a result of that but in any event there were reports earlier this afternoon of
5:17 am
water bottles and firecrackers being thrown at police officers of spray painted profanity laced spray painted created comments on police vehicles. people rocking police vehicles and at that time there were reports that were 3 officers were injured so dear and we had spoken spoken earlier and i had told you that i thought once the sun set that it was very likely that things would ratchet up again and people would protest this moment is eerily reminiscent of other moment that the city of chicago had and it won't fade from its memory soon that was in 2014 when the police shot and killed a 17 year old look kwan make donald at the time nischelle a the police had said that he was carrying a gun and he lunged at the police 13 months later dash cam on a police squad car revealed that police
5:18 am
a police officer shot him multiple times as he was walking away from the police there were massive protests the illinois state attorney general and the department of civil rights initiated. investigation and the report concluded at that time that the chicago police department had quote a violent culture of excessive violence aimed at particularly minority groups and since then derren the police department has implemented a plan and worked toward to better train police officers and build a better relationship with communities of color all right to natasha the name there in chicago natasha will no doubt come back to you a little bit later during your nighttime when as we mentioned thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in los angeles as well as rob reynolds joins us live from their robes that is bring us up to date with what's happening there. well the latest aaron is that the mayor eric garcetti has imposed
5:19 am
a curfew beginning 145 minutes from now on the entire city of los angeles a vast area previously ghar city had said that it would be limited to the downtown area but now a guard said he said this is no longer a protest this is destruction so he's extended the area of. of curfew as you can see there are some cars which have been set alight police vehicles we understand that 56 excuse me policemen have been injured in today's events. together with last night's violence in downtown los angeles $533.00 people have all together have been arrested and as night falls the standoffs continue there was also
5:20 am
a fire set at a police kiosk in a very upscale shopping area it's called the grove and it's very popular with tourists but that that was torched and and left to burn and the situation now is as night begins to fall as our other correspondents around the country has said things tend to to get even more highly charged intense at night and i just wanted to also. amplify a little bit of what natasha and some of your other guests were saying about the the history of the. deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of police officers in the case of trayvon martin mike brown in missouri tamir rice a 12 year old in ohio eric garner the list goes on. all in all of those cases
5:21 am
the police officers involved in the deaths of those individuals were not prosecuted or if they were prosecuted they were set free and not convicted this is another factor i think that is uppermost in the minds of people who are protesting and people who are outraged but maybe not taking to the streets they know that although derek shall than is better has been arrested and it's possible that his fellow police officers involved in the george floyd killing may face some charges people know that it's very very difficult and very rare for a police officer to be punished in any way. after any of these incidents we have a lot of evidence of that so i think that's another factor. that lends itself to this palpable sense of anger that we've been talking about all right to rob
5:22 am
reynolds there live for us in los angeles rob thank you for the update well as we mentioned there's even been violence outside the white house where hundreds of protesters have been squaring off against the police and the u.s. president donald trump denounced the violence in minneapolis blaming it on newt has an accused my administration has opened a civil rights investigation and i have asked the attorney general and the justice department to expedite it. i understand the pain that people are feeling we support the right of peaceful protesters and we hear their police but what we are now seeing on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or with peace. the memory of george floyd is being dishonored by rioters looters and anarchists when in the last few minutes the president has taken to twitter criticizing local authorities in minneapolis he said the national
5:23 am
guard has been released in minneapolis to do the job the democratic mayor couldn't do should have been used 2 days ago and there would not have been damage to the police headquarters would not have been taken over and ruined a great job by the national guard no games well democratic presidential hopeful joe biden has also weighed in on the protests tweeting that if we're complacent if we are silent we are complicit in perpetrating these cycles of violence none of us can turn away we all have an obligation to speak out let's cross over to washington d.c. and talk to mike hanna mike so not surprisingly president trump has taken to twitter and that's cause a serious rift with the man tell us what's been happening. indeed yes well even in this crisis the president is still making political points as you mentioned in that tweet some 8 hours ago blaming the democratic mayor of minneapolis for not coping with the situation so certainly president trump singling
5:24 am
out democrats he got into a furious specter in the course of the day with the mayor of the d.c. meriel but she was absolutely incensed when he tweeted what she regarded as full swords that d.c. police did not aid the secret service in dealing with the demonstrations friday the secret service came out with a statement shortly afterwards confirming that they have a joint command with the metropolitan police that the police in fact had given them some protective equipment so the mayor absolutely incensed about that incense to about president trump's tweets that those demonstrators who got into the area of the white house would be greeted with ominous weapons that vicious dogs the mayor saying that this harken back to 960 civil rights for. this when dogs were released on african american demonstrators so certainly the president in the midst of all of this having his personal spats with democratic mayors of various cities dealing
5:25 am
with this ongoing violence in various parts within the last few minutes as well the national guard has been mobilized here in the district columbia the reason by why it is not done by the mayor because d.c. has no governor so the request by the parks police went to the secretary of defense who said prove the mobilization of the national guard to assist the parks police and the other federal police along with the metropolitan police in dealing with the ongoing demonstrations that are happening in and around the white house and other parts of the city the demonstrations have been largely peaceful through the course of the day and indeed in the course of the evening there had been some scuffles at one stage demonstrators being pushed back across the fired part which is in front of the white house but generally the demonstrations have been relatively peaceful but not helped by president trump also tweeting up much to the mayor's tweet that
5:26 am
said. the smite could be back at night outside the white house this in reference to the make america great again movement which is the bedrock of president support interpreted by the mayor and many others as the president calling on counter-demonstrators to come out and oppose the protesters which would of course be a major conflict no signs of any supporters or back their supporters in the course of the day when the course of the evening great relief to the law enforcement officials but certainly the city's leaders making very clear that president transaction is making their no terrible job they are doing even more difficult mike just quickly president trump as we heard there just tweeted that the national guard is to be deployed in minneapolis but of course the question is raised does the president have the constitutional power to deploy the army at a local level. well he does not to that's very clear in terms of various acts that have been possible dating back to the 19th
5:27 am
century the president cannot do so without express the clarity of congress in many cases in the late to act the insurrection act it makes very clear that the military can only be deployed and a very tight conditions firstly they would have to be invited by the governor of a state or by the state legislative secondly they would only be in a supportive role they would not be allowed to arrest anybody we do understand that the pentagon has put some military units on standby in case they received a request from any of the governors they are now on 4 hour standby rather than the normal 4 days these we believe are military police units but the governors generally have shied away from such a move which would drastically escalate the situation in terms of moving troops in it is something that is seldom done in the united states and as i said only done under very very regulated conditions and certainly never done at the autonomous
5:28 am
room of the president at thing alone or it's a life in washington d.c. mike thank you let's cross over now to miami florida and talk to andy gallagher there and we've been talking to you for most of the night it seems to be a palpable sense of anger and frustration across many u.s. cities what's the underlying feeling in florida because they've seen this all before haven't they with the trayvon martin case people are still very angry about that. you know there is a great deal of pain in the african-american community over that case trayvon martin was a teenager an unarmed teenager making his way to his father's house when he was challenged and gunned down by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain george zimmerman who consequently was found not guilty by a jury that was a case still resonates in this community. just started buzzing in saying there's an emergency and there is a curfew now in place as in many other cities across the country here from 10 pm
5:29 am
this evening till 6 am tomorrow. as he was saying a lot of cases here of course joe's was another case just a couple of years ago he was someone who broke down on the side of the road was shot dead by a police officer that police officer went to trial was also found innocent then of course more recently you've got a model the young black man that was jogging through a neighborhood in georgia that was corralled by 2 white men who were on themselves he was then shot and killed as well so you can understand perhaps the anger within the community when they see time and time again these cases in which more often than not a young black man that end up dead at the hands of police officers who are then found not guilty or not even charged or told now the situation here in florida seems to be quieting down somewhat earlier there were crowds outside the main police station in downtown miami tear gas was fired there were
5:30 am
a few cars on fire the i 95 the main highway that runs all the length of this state along the east coast was closed down in places people went from downtown miami on to the highway walking in between cause there and there have been other process in other parts of the states as well although north as far as jacksonville and there have been protests is gathering outside at the police officers house he apparently has a 2nd home in orlando that spent 9 minutes. with this knee on the neck of george floyd leading to. that man's death think the gathering outside his house as well but things do seem to be quieting down but i think it's a reflection of. things replicated from other parts of the country that a curfew is now in place in this state but certainly i think the crowd was large as we've seen in some other places but certainly the anger the vocal anger at the feeling of frustration the feeling of injustice is just as powerful as it is
5:31 am
anywhere else in the country and you just briefly you talk about the curfew coming in 10 pm tonight something being replicated across many u.s. states are people going to listen to those orders do you think. well if i look over my shoulder to downtown miami i can still see one helicopter hovering over that area there were 2 or 3 earlier so the indications here are that the crowds are dispersing there were never more than a few 100 in the 1st place we're certainly not seeing the thousands that we're seeing in minneapolis tonight so the situation does seem to be under control here in this state what happens in the coming days in hours i just can't say this point but that sense of anger i think is spreading rapidly the sense that justice is not done for people of color the people of color continually are set upon by police officers who then don't face any consequences for their actions people of federal you've heard this from my colleagues in all of the country saying the same thing
5:32 am
over and over again we've all covered these cases over the years they are horrendous to see but what's most horrendous i think for these communities in particular is that you know justice is done hence you hear that chant over and over again no justice no peace all right. you got to go live in miami florida those pictures you're seeing in your screen of the live situation in new york where there's been an arrest in parts throughout the night let's look at minneapolis there it is that was where this all started live pictures of the police on the roads there my colleague richelle carey is up next to the top of the special coverage of the protests across america up next it's the listening. to scarcity has become a major. demand is going. straight down turning an essential natural resource into a commodity trading profit. what about the
