peaceful but tense at times it follows 5 nights of violence in those cities and others across the country with protesters clashing with police and the thousands of national guard members drafted in cars have been burnt out and shops have been looted. while saturday night's violence the 5th in a row the left yet more streets scarred and fires burning in at least 30 cities across the united states including in minneapolis where the protests began as well as in new york and los angeles around 20 have now imposed curfews in an effort to east tensions but the police presence has led to cautious at least $1700.00 people were arrested as tens of thousands of members of the national guard were brought in to backup officers in several states and more are said to be deployed in the coming hours well emotions have been running high in the daylight pause after a night of violence and before the possibility of more unrest. is george floyd as
1:03 am
i've been saying we lost his generation's he was on that day his great grand children his great great grandchildren we lost humanity on that day and what we're doing right now if these protests in these moments as we risk ourselves in this period to me is fighting for humanity this is not the america that i dreamed of growing up in this is not. i don't even feel safe in my own home perry. better be for what happened in georgia by saying you know i don't believe that my land destroyed property you did it should it go i'm going to build a business partners down in this could be the team. the minnesota governor tim walz has acknowledged that the protests show life in his state is different depending on whether you're black or white. we don't just right near the top on educational attainment we rank near the top on personal incomes on homeownership on life expectancies things that make this and one that came out
1:04 am
a while back we we rank 2nd in a survey of the 50 states 2nd in happiness behind hawaii but if you take a deeper look and peel it back which this week has peeled back all of those statistics are true if you're white if you're not we rank near the bottom and what this week is showing all of us is those 2 things can't operate at the same place. well john hendren is live for us in minneapolis at a memorial in the place where george floyd was arrested so what's the message being sent out by people who are at that memorial. i'm having a little trouble hearing you so i'm i'm just going to go ahead and answer that question i think you're asking me. right now i meant the memorial for george floyd you can see his circle of flowers and on the other side of the street under that stoplight that is the spot where george floyd spent some of his last moments under

the knees of 3 police officers and it's a peaceful day if you look around you can see people with dogs and children and there's a kind of. somber but festive mood there are people selling food. it's a dramatic contrast from what you see in the evening that crowd seems to morph in it's been the 1st few days there was looting and fires set and we asked someone here what it is that that property damage accomplishes and i got a very honest answer from him he said those are multinational companies that we have targeted they're insured nobody is really hurt when those buildings are burned but we make a statement and the belief flies at least according to this protestor that they have gotten action by raising attention to what's going on here 1st of all they got to get there with the charges against the 1st of the 4 officers and now they're seeking charges against all 4 officers and so they've had these protests in which
1:06 am
they've overwhelmed this city. and they've really won the night every night until the governor called in a 1000 extra national guard troops last night on saturday overnight and those troops were very aggressive they shot tear gas and rubber bullets and they dispersed that crowd within about 15 minutes and that night was very quiet after that it was at. aaron if the governor who had had to apologize and before did not want to be embarrassed again so that's a little what's going on in the streets we're still waiting to see if tonight will be another night where the police dominate the streets or whether the protesters will all right john thank you very much for that it's. police have been criticized for their response in some cities as you've been hearing including in new york where a police vehicle was seen in a video ramming protesters behind a barricades footage shared online shows demonstrators blocking the path of 2 cars
1:07 am
in the street before one lurches forward into the crowds new york police say 345 people were arrested off 33 officers were injured and 27 police vehicles damaged and the mayor of new york bill de blasio says a full investigation will take place that is not the way things are supposed to be there will be a full investigation into discipline as necessary there will be but do not present only one side of the picture i looked at those videos i saw people converging on the police vehicle i saw people throwing things at the police vehicle that is not peaceful protests so let's not kid ourselves if you or anyone else was inside that police vehicle surrounded by people you would have had a really tough decision to make you can't stay there you can't get out of the vehicle you have to get yourself and the vehicle out of the situation safely for all the mayor of washington d.c. has warned that the massive protests across the country could lead to a rebound in the number of coronavirus cases are also had

a message for president. the president has a role to play nationally and calming. the the i rest that we see in cities across america and i think at that at least he has to not incite violence and that's what we would expect. that's a mayor of washington let's bring in mike hanna who's joining us from washington to 1st to give us an update on the protests that have been taking place place around the white house. but in the wake of last night's protests which are occasionally erupted in some violence today has gone peacefully and nothing much to the relief of the law enforcement personnel the park which is right in front of the white house is still close to the public the demonstrators being kept beyond the park so quite

a distance from the white house fence itself obviously secret service agents on the inside perimeter metropolitan police on the outskirts of the perimeter but generally the protesters gone ahead completely peacefully numbers a little bit down on the yesterday but that may change as evening falls so too it is feared could the propensity towards further unrest but at present everything quiet massive security underway here in d.c. as it was hoping for the past few days police helicopters continuing to circle overhead very heavily armed park police and secret service agents and metropolitan police but at the moment the demonstrations here in d.c. at least remain peaceful and what the president what has the president tweeted about or what is he said. well the president's been tweeting as he is one to do there were some reports earlier that some of his staff were advising him to cut down on the tweeting during this period of crisis it doesn't
1:10 am
appear that he listened if that was in fact the case he's been tweeting about it and saying it's going to be declared a terrorist organization let me just walk that back and is short for antitheft had its origins in europe in the twenty's and thirty's but then saw a rise here in the united states with the rise of donald trump and the so-called all right movement it's basically a left wing alliance opposed to fess ism as the name implies a but it is not possible for the president to designate and a terrorist organization despite his speech this is because there is no law in the u.s. that deals with domestic terrorism there is no law that would allow for any domestic organization to be labeled a terrorist the american civil liberties union has already responded sharply to president trump's statement pointing out that it would be an abrogation of any 1st amendment right should the trump administration continue to explore this the
1:11 am
attorney general bill barr held a news conference to try and walk back to president come statement making clear that it is not being designated a terrorist organization however it will be among those organizations investigated by the joint terrorism task force so that's a very different thing under way but the trumpet ministration holding these left wing alliance is responsible for the violence despite claims from others like the mayor of minneapolis who's in insists that white white supremacists are forming part of the crowds have meant particular violence so a very confused philosophical message coming out from the administration saying that it is going to investigate an organization that is not really an organization of if i can just explain that very quickly one expert comp. birdwatching he points out that they are organizations of birdwatchers the organizations that fall
1:12 am
under the umbrella of but neither more bird watching is an organization but the investigation will continue according to the attorney general into the groups that may have infiltrated the protesters and the sparking off this violence that we've seen around the nation all right to mike thank you very much for that clarity an update from washington. well solidarity protests have also been held in london hundreds of people gathered in trafalgar square before marching past the prime minister's official residence in downing street and on to the u.s. embassy some held signs saying the u.k. is not innocent it was organized by a local black lives matter groups other events are planned elsewhere in the u.k. 5 people were arrested 3 for breaching coronavirus distancing rules. china has used the ongoing violence in the u.s. to accuse it of hypocrisy in its complaints over hong kong politicians and state media use that to infer that police in hong kong were restrained as they clamp down on the anti-government movement that's gripped the city for the last year
1:13 am
a chinese editor said that instead of chiding hong kong u.s. politicians can enjoy the site from their own windows president trump the white house address on friday to say china had smothered the city's freedom the bigger problem is that hong kong and says china is keen to point out that the military was never involved in hong kong. chinese state media has been giving blanket coverage to the events unfolding in the united states telling its viewers that this is what democracy looks like the global times seen as a mouthpiece for the communist government it prints in both english and in chinese and is a major source of news within the country and outside the country has been publishing some very pointed at a tory also attacking the politicians which had supported the hong kong protests now a lot of articles have also been drawing parallels between what's happening in the united states and the hong kong pro-democracy protests which unfolded last year where there were many scenes of violent confrontations between the police and
1:14 am
protesters and the editorials are asking the u.s. politicians like microamp a nancy pelosi and even donald trump whether they stand with the violent protesters and writers of minneapolis as they stood with the protesters of hong kong using it . very popular chant during the hong kong protest now they're also asking whether you know pointing out that china did not send in any army or any threat of the army coming into hong kong while there were almost daily protests but you know within days of protests in the united states the president had said that they would be calling in the national guard and even possibly the army so they're trying to draw parallels between what's happening in the u.s. and what was happening in hong kong and pointing fingers saying that asking what kind of support there is and calling them hypocritical still to come on al-jazeera

clashes but shops have been looted in philadelphia. but violent confrontations were seen in at least 30 cities on saturday night around $1700.00 people or arrested with tens of thousands of national guard troops to avoid in several states president trump is blaming much of the violence on anti fascist protesters and says he intends to jessica make them a terrorist organization. their mosque in occupied east jerusalem has reopened it had been closed for 2 months to help contain the coronavirus worshippers are being asked to wear face masks and bring their own prayer mats as harry fawcett reports. of the after more than 2 months of closure muslim worshippers are once again allowed inside the mosque compound. not the where often is our life and it is the beat of our heart now we are breathing again.

inside the gates hundreds prayed spaced apart in the courtyards. and inside the mosque itself. i was counting every minute to come back to pray i hope all muslims feel good and hope for luxor to stay safe. the preparations have been underway for days but despite a recent increase in cases of coded 19 reported by the israeli health ministry islamic walk that manages the site put no limits on numbers allowed in we have the personal hygiene as a tradition in our religion and it's half of the belief we depend on the awareness and the commitment of the people and also the committees of the guards and the walk a fork or is to organize the people and protect them. also making preparations for a palestinian activist getting ready to hand out gifts to children but that's about it jim. i missed the friday prayers this prayer was holy for me and i ignore everything for it's friday for me is the day i get for alexa i meet my friends and we discuss our plans and projects that had been concerns that the reopening could

become a flashpoint after israeli security forces shot dead an unarmed palestinian man with special needs on saturday i had how locke was hiding in this refuse storage room when he was killed investigation is begun. as well as muslim worshippers hundreds of jews were also allowed to access the site known to them as the temple mount on the preexisting agreements several palestinians were arrested israeli police said so we are. break out of that report to take you live to atlanta that is the mayor of atlantic bottoms giving a statement on the protests going on in any department i want to begin again but thinking chief shiels. chief slaughter in his absence chief bryant and all of the men and women. of our public safety department who have literally been working around the clock over the past few days to make sure that our city is safe and secure we know the reason that our country is in upheaval and it
1:21 am
is been because of the killing of african-americans across this country at the hands of law enforcement that is not lost on us today so i want to acknowledge all of the families who are still experiencing the pain of those losses as well i also want to acknowledge an officer who we had who was injured last night investigator maximus brewer he was injured during the collision with a.t.v. last night he remains in i.c.u. and we ask for to ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers he has a long road to recur recovery. this evening i have once again signed an executive order that there will be a curfew at 9 pm tonight we want it to assess where we were coming out of yesterday
1:22 am
evening which by the way there were 157 arrests made on yesterday evening. various validations but we wanted to assess where we were before making a determination as to whether or not we would have a curfew again for today that curfew again is for 9 pm today we will assess again on tomorrow. sometime during the night i saw a very disturbing video of 2 young college students who were in downtown atlanta yesterday evening. and it was disturbing on many levels. the least of not which was that there clearly was an excessive use of force. we understand that our officers are working very long hours under and norma's amount of stress. but we also understand that the use of excessive
1:23 am
force is never acceptable so the reason that we postponed the press conference earlier today. was to give chief shills and not an opportunity to review the body cam video there were 5 officers involved in this incident so it took quite a while. many of you all know in my former life i'm still a lawyer i still have my law license and i was a judge so i had to ask a lot of questions and review the footage again and again and again and we had extensive discussions based on what we saw on that footage after review of that footage chief shields and i have made the determination that 2 of the officers involved in the and student last night will be terminated
1:24 am
immediately. the other 3 officers are right now on decks duty. pinching for their determination of what if any appropriate action disciplinary action should be taken against them the release of that body cam footage and the corresponding police report should be available to the media immediately. and with that i will turn it over to chief shills. for comment and also to chief bryant for comment and then walford up for questions . so good evening i echo the mayor's comments in on both fronts the 1st is i i could not be prouder of the work of the atlanta police department along with our other law enforcement agencies we have
1:25 am
been handed and an enormous obstacle and have by and large done it as well as we could in the space that we have being afforded. these folks are going out every day they're getting pelted with rocks knives thrown at them and going gunshots. it's it's really it's an unpleasant space to be in. but that does not. relieve us of our responsibilities and we have a responsibility when we handle any incident. not to escalate the incident and not to further cause harm or injury. last night was. a broad array of emotions for me i have an officer who was directing traffic and was slammed into by somebody who was driving an a.t.v. recklessly down peachtree street the officers in i.c.u.
1:26 am
and we hope that he can walk again and we went from there to 3 in the morning and it's being put before me that we have this video that was really shocking to watch you know how we were man handling a couple of young people in their car. and. to be fair. i knew it was bad but i really wanted to believe that the body more camera footage would provide some larger view that could better rationalize why we got to the space and having spent most of the afternoon with the mayor reviewing the footage exhaustively. i knew that i had only one option and that is to terminate the employees. when the minnesota incident unfolded i was appalled by the incident but i was also appalled by the da and their
1:27 am
inability to see what all of us saw on the video and their need to have to process it and investigate it further and what i realized this afternoon is i was wanting to be afforded that same level of time and i think as law enforcement if we are ever going to get out of this base that we're in today we have to recognize that our behaviors cannot consistently be part and because we are law enforcement. these these are good guys i know them as individuals i've worked with the one for over 20 years but they made that level of mistake that cannot be rolled back. and if i stand before you in the community day in and day out. reassuring you that this department is different that we do things differently their expectations are different and i love all of it others have to rise and meet
1:28 am
that standard so. i apologize i apologize to both of the individuals i believe once a spelman student was a morehouse student. how we behaved as an agency as individuals was unacceptable and i know that we've. cause further fear. to you in a space that's already so fearful for so many african-americans and i'm genuinely sorry this is not who we are this is not where we're about. and sometimes the the best thing the only thing we do is a police chief is come in and. and clean up the mess that's before you but i am truly sorry to those individuals and. we're still working to get it right thank you . good evening ronnie bryant. doing the court nation a public safety for throughout the events less night we had
1:29 am
a challenging night. for the most part. for the incident that chief sears spoke of in the incident of the office of been injured. most people cooperated the people we had a number of arrests those arrests were generally due to people who refused to abide by the curfews but overall we think that we working with our federal state and local partners as well as a number of people from the community we were able to overcome last night with not a lot of damage to our city. we will continue to have that same positioning today the curfew remains the mayor has extended to care for you again tonight to 9 o'clock we x. that everyone at here today curfew and that we get those great those good people
1:30 am
out of the street and safely at home how position as i stated early opposition will be the remain the same that people go home. get off the streets so that we can make sure that we can protect the city and the residents of the and the businesses of this city appropriately. our partners from the national guard have played a pivotal role in helping us maintain the issue the maintain the standards of this city and so with that being said we encourage everyone to. go ahead and clear to streets that. just a little bit more information on the college students i've been in touch with. dr schmidt campbell from spelman college and also dr thomas from morehouse college obviously there is
1:31 am
a lot of care and concern amongst all of our residents but it specially our partners at the atlanta birth to be sent i've also been in constant contact day with representatives a fan of of the students i have not spoken directly with the students but i have spoken with their representatives and. as chief shills mentioned this this is one that kept me up all night as well i saw the video late into the night and i think what it really highlights for me and for all of us there would have been a time probably even last week even that we would have been able to take our time and we would have been able to toss some things around. and very likely would not have taken the measure of terminating these officers. but again as we watch the video today it became abundantly clear immediately
1:32 am
with the young woman that this force was excessive. and it took. really we had to look at several angles for the young man again there were 5 officers involved and we want to make sure so that is the mayor of atlanta. standing alongside members of the police force and atlanta what they've announced is that a curfew will begin once again tonight she signed an executive order for a curfew to start at 9 pm for one more night and she said that 157 arrests have been made overnight on saturday in atlanta the mayor also pointing out that the use of excessive force is never acceptable during demonstrations just a reminder demonstrations did turn violent in atlanta as well as other cities in the u.s. over the death off george floyd thanks for watching. us coronavirus maintains its stranglehold on the u.s. campaigning on the election trail has been forced to take
1:33 am
a back seat but with so much at stake when will the presidential candidates get the opportunity to hit the road and so their brand of american politics follow the u.s. election on a. goes to the when they came out when i was. young i was still in the dallas years we use my school. you know it's over to. the.
