isolating times the listening post cuts through the noise you've been looking at another side of this story now from our information around the outbreak but. the listening post on al-jazeera. al-jazeera. and jordan this is the al-jazeera news hour live from coming up in the next 60 minutes. we want. protesters take to the streets right across the united states once again venting their anger over police brutality in the killing of an unarmed black man. fanning the flames u.s. president donald trump takes aim again at the anti for movement plans to declare it a terrorist organization. medics on the front lines mexico prepares to ease its

coronavirus lockdown even though infections are rapidly on the run. on 2 nasa astronauts safety make it to the international space station. in nearly a decade that. is the scene as we go to protest as are once again gathering in cities right across the united states over the death of an unarmed black man in minneapolis last week we have reporters standing by in 6 major cities the outpouring of anger of a police brutality is now entering its 6th day hundreds gathered again in minneapolis where this all started to denounce the death of george floyd he was killed by a white police officer were knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes last monday when the protests spread across the country from new york to. los angeles so far
2:02 am
gatherings have been fairly peaceful but past nights have seen looting and vandalism well the national guard has now been mobilized in several states to help contain the violence nightly curfews have been imposed and there's already a heavy police presence on the streets of many major cities and in washington d.c. hundreds have gathered outside the white house president trump has come under fire for his continued critical comments about the protests well 1st up john hendren is in minneapolis where this all began so john we saw those 1000 extra national guard troops being brought into the city last night tell us what's been happening there today. well president trump just tweeted in all capitals law and order with an exclamation point and that's exactly what's going on right now here this is where george floyd of course spent his last moments under that red traffic light you see across the street and and in front of that you can see 'd
2:03 am
a ring of flowers and this is a really very calm peaceful. uplifting kind of protest where people there are children and dogs and everything and that's the way it is largely being here during the day what seems to happen is that naive it changes. by the way we are told according to the mayor of houston that it is unique houston and not here in minneapolis that he will be buried in that the memorial service will be held but getting back to those protests i think they tend to get a little more raucous and we have had several nights in which fires were set and buildings were looted the protesters have told us that when that happens they targeted multinational building so. big corporations like walgreens c.v.s. and k.-mart because they say those places are insured and they say they're trying not to target those small businesses but of course police aren't going to stand for that the 1st few nights they couldn't even get fire trucks in there because the
2:04 am
demonstrators control that area but after we saw those 1000 new national guard troops last night now there are $7500.00 in total along with hundreds or thousands of police that are already deployed here the police marched in with tear gas and rubber bullets it seemed like they were firing fairly indiscriminately in order to disperse the protesters we certainly got a whiff of that tear gas and had some of those rubber pellets swish past us and the police really took over last night and after that it was quiet the governor has said he was overwhelmed in the 1st few nights and he clearly. they didn't want to be embarrassed again so because that worked for them last night it is likely we're likely to see this same kind of crackdown after all this is the 2nd night of curfew which begins at 8 this evening and that's in just a couple of hours john as they say minneapolis is now under a state of curfew aap people like you though to adhere to the stay off the streets
2:05 am
oda that's the question isn't it. i think i can say safely daryn no there are committed to demonstrators we've talked to them who said that they will be out here tonight the question is will the police allow them to remain out last night the police did a pretty effective job for the 1st time in several nights of dispersing those demonstrators when they gathered in one central place they waited until an hour after curfew i think we can expect to see something like that again the question is whether the demonstrators who have shown a real strategy they have taken over areas that the police had previously occupied the question is will they be able to hold their ground or will the police come in in force as they did last night this is of course something that's going on nationwide but right here in minneapolis in the epicenter it has been back and forth up until the police finally won the day last night and john the been allegations that activists and not just hates us from outside of minneapolis
2:06 am
a coming in to stoke the unrest so what are you seeing and hearing that. most of the people here seem to be from minneapolis and the governor had originally said most of the people they arrested were from out of town in fact police released new numbers that show about 20 percent of those who've been arrested are from out of town and that might be from the minneapolis suburbs there are certainly people here from other states you know we saw people who who were from neighboring states but most of the people seem really to be here organically from minneapolis and the surrounding area and these these protests are organic there are certainly organized groups that have come here as well but most of the people we see are people who live here and who are upset about the death of a young black man by a police officer when he was unarmed this is happening across the country and these protests are aimed at stopping that to john hendren there live for us in minneapolis john thank you. well several top officials in the trumpet ministration
2:07 am
have blamed on t.v. that's on this fascist protest movement for the violence amid the demonstrations so let's take a closer look at the movement is a collection of left wing groups which oppose nazis him white supremacists and racism some anti for groups can trace their regions to the fight against european fascists in the 1920 s. and thirty's like other protest movements from that era it was often dress all in black well the movement was dormant for years but have seen a revival since donald trump's election most new members are young voters well now president trump has announced that the united states of america will be designating as a terrorist organization he says other democrat run cities and states should look at the total shut down a radical left on a case in minneapolis last night a national guard a great job and should be used in other states the full it's too late. and some time earlier national security adviser robert o'brian echoed the u.s.
2:08 am
president's stance against on t.v.'s we stand with the protesters it's the violent and tea for the radical militants that are coming out under cover of night traveling across state lines using military style tactics to burn down our cities and they're especially targeting the most vulnerable parts of our cities george that the minority sections african-american sections and hispanic areas and burning down businesses of people who are trying to get a leg up and and the presence outraged by that and we all are and and that has to stop and we're calling on the f.b.i. to investigate and to fund and get to the bottom of these violent rioters so mike hanna joins us live now from washington d.c. mixer president trump there tweeting earlier about designating on t.v. that's that far left radical group as a terrorist organization but the question is can he do that because there's no domestic statute that allows for this. well indeed yes there is no domestic statute that would allow the president to designate
2:09 am
a terrorist organization basically it is against u.s. law the american civil liberties union has already responded very sharply to president saying that even doing so or attempting to do so would be an abrogation of the 1st amendment so certainly president trump maybe not that clear about the law of the country making a tweet like that his attorney general bill barr subsequently tried to walk it back a bit saying that there would be among the organizations that are investigated by the joint terrorism task force making clear that there is no intention of declaring the organization a terrorist one but here is another issue it is not really an organization one expert pointed out that birdwatching an anteater can be compared to our organizations that are bird watchers and organizations that fall under the umbrella but neither bird watching nor. is an organization so the many problems involved
2:10 am
here and not least the assumption that auntie for all those allied to it are behind the violence that we've seen the mayor of minneapolis for example is insistent that it's right wing white supremacists who are infiltrating the crowds and causing violence so there's going to be ongoing discussion ongoing argument about there's none the less the joint terrorism task force will not be involved in the investigation into how this violence happened yet mike and meanwhile yet more protests near the white house and we understand a heavy police presence is there what more can you tell us. well there's been a very heavy police presence there and of course has been bolstered by the arrival of the national guard they were called in by the secretary of defense in the course of the night the reason being is that there is no governor in washington so it's up to the secretary of defense to approve the deployment of the national guard but
2:11 am
there is a very heavy police presence there are layers of security around the white house on the inner ring obviously the secret service then you have the outer ring the u.s. park police along with the washington metropolitan police so there's a very heavy presence the police helicopters for the 2nd day now have been up in the air for much of the afternoon although everything has been very peaceful in the course of the day in force for the visual so obviously very much aware of that are very much pleased by that and the mayor of washington had some more words to say about the president's tweets this is what miriam says but i think that the president has a role to play nationally in calming. the the i'm wrath that we see in cities across america and i think at that least he has to not incite violence and that's what we would expect and my just very quickly how is
2:12 am
all of this playing out politically for the president i mean he's an odds with many state governors over the protests he's facing heavy criticism over his coded 1000 response and now this. well indeed yes and there has been intense criticism of the president for the nature of his tweets in the past few days and although he's publicly commiserated with the family of the slain man he is in the now the breasts then put the protesters down at one stage it would appear calling for his supporters to come and conduct a counter protest so certainly there's been intense criticism of this and what's be noticeable is not necessarily at a governor level but some of the mayors of the cities the mayor of washington d.c. the mayor of chicago have been shop about the president trump in an unprecedented way pointed criticism of the president and this is something that is likely to evolve in the days and weeks ahead or into my kind of their life for us in
2:13 am
washington d.c. mike thank you for that well let's go to new york now and protests there are underway but there's been criticism of the police response after a car was seen running demonstrators on saturday the city's mayor bill de blasio says an investigation will now take place. that is not the way things are supposed to be there will be a full investigation into discipline is necessary there will be but do not present only one side of the picture i looked at those videos i saw people converging on the police vehicle i saw people throwing things at the police vehicle that is not peaceful protests so let's not kid ourselves if you or anyone else was inside that police vehicle surrounded by people you would have had a really tough decision to make you can't stay there you can't get out of the vehicle you have to get yourself and the vehicle out of the situation safely for all well gabriel is on the joins us live now he's out amongst demonstrates ins in new york gabe so some allegations of police have you had to do in the city earlier
2:14 am
today with the mayor bill de blasio weighing in what more can you tell us. yeah that's right there's a lot of criticism of police actions here in new york city from saturday night you saw that video there that you just showed there's also other video out of police heavy handedness if you will using strong tactics against what appeared to be peaceful protesters so that's was the response you got there from the mayor and it has not satisfied a lot of protesters here they say that's just simply not right they say that he's just simply defending the police where he shouldn't be according to a lot of the protesters here on sunday there are protests happening right now and they are completely peaceful so far i'm in times square of course here and it's quiet right now but that's not how it was just a few minutes ago when thousands of protesters walked right through these streets when i was here here's a video take a look. in one of the most famous spots in all of america time square and
2:15 am
protesters are out in force thousands of them out here making their voices heard you can see them it's young people it's old it's white brown you getting a whole cross-section of new york city here they are angry and they are calling for justice and they are taking their message out to all parts of new york city including here right by times square on saturday you saw protests in all the 5 major boroughs the new york city we're seeing protests on sunday as well it is mostly very very peaceful here but the crowds as you can see are absolutely huge some of the largest crowds we have seen. for protests ever in new york city i gave meanwhile hundreds of protesters were arrested last night in the city what level of policing and security are we likely to see in the coming hours
2:16 am
though. where there's lots of police in new york city there's always lots of police in new york city but they're in a delicate position right now because they have to patrol the city they have to try to keep order they have to. pray for fried order even for the peaceful protests of those protests you just saw a few minutes ago they walked down here in the police were following them to help block or roads to help keep them safe as well so it's a delicate situation for the police trying to protect public order protect the protesters from traffic in this very important big city of course but yet also protect order when things go out of hand as we saw late saturday night when there was. 47 new york p.d. police vehicles that were burned or damaged 33 police officers were injured and 345 protesters arrested so but they certainly on sunday night and every night there are the the presence of police is very high in the city right now as tensions are very high as well try to get to those on the for us in new york thank you for now. well
2:17 am
emotions have been running high as people come out to assess the situation after a night of. floyd as he lost his generation's we lost. we lost. and you're doing great no. risk ourselves. is fighting for humanity this is not america. this is not. i don't even feel safe in my own home. i don't believe. we did if it suited. the business parlance down in this new team. let's head over to rob reynolds he's live for us in los angeles rob so we know the california governor has declared
2:18 am
a state of emergency not today to the national guard in los angeles where you also talk us through what's been happening today. well deron today the focus of protests have been in the beachside community of santa monica rather upscale area to the west of downtown los angeles several 100 peaceful protesters gathered along they confront boulevard in santa monica they they knelt and sat in the street they marched back and forth along the boulevard it was entirely peaceful but the city of santa monica declared a curfew for 4 pm local time which is $2300.00 g.m.t. which is basically a few minutes ago so police have been trying to move those demonstrators off the streets. despite the fact that they were behaving nonviolently now i have to say
2:19 am
that there were another group of people who looted and rob several stores in santa monica they seem to be. completely unrelated to this group has showed no interest in demonstrating against the killing of george floyd or police brutality or systemic racism they seem to be interested in robbing shoe stores and we saw lots of people with armloads of shoe boxes getting into cars and driving away police were kind of overextended in santa monica so that they were not able to stop a lot of that ransacking now overnight there was considerably more violence in los angeles there were some buildings that were burned there were clashes between demonstrators and police and more ransacking 398 people were arrested from saturday night into sunday morning 5 police officers were injured
2:20 am
one seriously with a fractured skull the mayor of los angeles eric garces. he defended his decision to ask for several 100 national guard troops to be brought in to back up the police saying that. in these times strong measures ok are called for in order to restore peace rob just briefly you talk about considerable looting and violence yesterday are protests as likely then to abide by the curfew tonight. i think some will some won't there and it's clear that you know there is a group of people who are trying to take advantage of the situation in order to do illegal things there are other protesters who perhaps want to be arrested as a statement of protest and there are other protesters who i'm sure will feel that they have made that statement and will go home so we we shall have to we will have
2:21 am
to see and we shall see soon by the way the curfew has been extended from 6 pm to hours 'd from now until dawn in all of the los angeles county area to rob reynolds there live in los angeles rob thank you for that let's cross over now to chicago and talk to natasha going to aim she joins us live from band now natasha so chicago is one of the many cities now under curfew just bring us up to date with what's been happening today. well the city of chicago is implementing as many measures as possible to ensure there will not be a repeat of the destruction the looting and the violence here on saturday evening pockets of unrest in the city that prompted the police superintendent to say it broke his heart 6 people were shot in the downtown area one of them died more than
2:22 am
$240.00 people were arrested more than 20 officers were injured so what is happening tonight the illinois and national guard has been activated in just a few minutes also ca go transit authority trains and buses will be suspended until tomorrow morning we have a curfew for a 2nd night in a row that begins at 9 pm and that central business district which was the focal point of destruction graffiti and looting there has been a boundary placed around it which means if you cannot prove that you either work or live in that area you will be not be permitted to enter all days off for police officers have also been cancelled mayor lori lightfoot spoke to the public twice today she urged people and she actually spoke directly to the people that had been wreaking havoc she urged them to quote use that energy and passion to do something
2:23 am
different to think about tomorrow so right now we're beginning hours of the evening it's far as i know there has been no signs of clashes between people protesters and police but again only time will tell all into the talks are going to end the line for us in chicago natasha thank you for now. in atlanta meanwhile 2 police officers have been fired for using excessive force on protesters the city's police chief said members of her force can't be allowed to act with impunity i think is law enforcement if we are ever going to get out of this space that we are in today we have to recognize that our behaviors cannot consistently be pardoned because we are law enforcement. these these are good guys i know them as individuals i've worked with the one for over 20 years. but they made that level of mistake that cannot be rolled back. well let's go south now and talk to andy
2:24 am
gallagher who joins us live from miami andy so what's the latest regarding the arrest of 5 policemen in atlanta over police brutality video from last night. you know i don't know if we've got the video to show our viewers but it's pretty horrific from the point of view of the person that recorded it there were 2 what appeared to be young women in a car when the atlanta police descended on that car one of them slashing a tire with a big knife and then tasing at least one of the people inside that car and dragging them out you heard the chief of police there in atlanta saying look i work with these people they are trying to keep the peace it's a difficult job but ultimately they fired 2 of those officers the other 3 are now on desk duty is as an investigation goes forward not think that's the kind of action that people are calling for they're now looking to their leaders particularly the chiefs of police in various cities across the country to simply
2:25 am
say look the police officers have a difficult job but if they use excessive force which it looks like in this case then they have to face consequences of course the people of atlanta looking to the leaders for far more than just taking on police brutality if you like they want to address economic issues wider issues but certainly that anger is still resonating in the important african-american city of atlanta but we saw there both the mayor and the chief of police taking pretty swift action here now and as you were talking to us we did in fact show those live pictures and those pictures to our viewers of that incident in atlanta let's talk about miami we saw violence and unrest on the streets yesterday so what's been happening there today. well once again there have been peaceful demonstrations put together all across this state but as i speak to you now there is some problems in fort lauderdale which is about 50 kilometers to my north there is tear gas being fired at protesters who seem to be playing. cat
2:26 am
and mouse game with the police rushing forward getting fired upon and then rushing back again here in downtown miami there is a small amount of protesters that would just about 54 or 56 arrests here last night most of the people arrested were arrested for breaking the curfew which is still in place tonight that comes into effect at about 8 pm there's another one at 9 pm county wide so i guess the big question is tonight whether people will abide by those curfews will actually go back to their homes or we will see scenes like we saw last night but i have to say the protests here in florida tend to be on the smaller side that the ones we see in places like atlanta l.a. and of course minneapolis but this is the state where 8 years ago trayvon martin was gunned down by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain and then was consequently george zimmerman who carried out that attack was consequently found innocent so those kinds of events really resonate with the african-american community here there is
2:27 am
still a great deal of anger over the trayvon martin case which of course led to the formation of the black lives matter movement so the pain is felt very deeply here in florida there has been sporadic looting the beaches here in miami were supposed to open on monday morning the mayor of miami is now saying that will not happen because of the violence we've seen particularly here in the south of florida or into under gallica in miami andy thank you for that update well for more on this let's speak to activist and social commentator april rain in baltimore maryland april thank you for talking to us the death of george floyd has galvanized many protests as we've seen across dozens of u.s. cities is a palpable sense is there not of anger and frustration with the police with law enforcement politicians but what's so different about these protests this time around do you think. well i think what's different is that there was an actual video so that we can all see for ourselves from several different angles exactly
2:28 am
what happened to george floyd you know that police officer officer show been kneeled on his neck for over 8 minutes while we heard mr floyd saying i can't breathe please let me out and in fact even screaming for his mother near the end who is deceased you know and not just show been but we saw 3 other police officers surrounding him not doing anything at all literally turning their backs on someone who the police are supposed to be protecting and serving that's their moral code right and yet we saw that he dan died at the hands of the police approach let me ask you do these protests though actually achieve anything because unarmed african-american men are still being killed by white police officers and nothing seems to change. well i think what thing i attempt to achieve is accountability you know justice in this case or in the case of any black or brown person who is killed
2:29 am
at the hands of law enforcement officials cannot happen because that person is dead but what we are looking for in part is accountability and schemes and i think that across the country at this time what we're seeing is a law enforcement officials executives governors mayors even other police officers saying that the actions taken by officers show ben and the other officers with respect to george floyd were inappropriate i think that's something new you know that people are actually thin blue line is they saying appears to have been broken at least a little bit but you are right that what we truly need is systemic change from the inside out we need to talk about how police officers are chain trained whether they are using deescalation tactics because all too often we see white people who are allegedly committing crimes white people who are resisting arrest and yet they are
2:30 am
taken into custody and harmed i'm sure you don't have to remind you of dylan ruth who literally sat in a search and prayed with 9 black parishioners and then gun them down he was taken into custody there was no question whether he could there be one of the one that i've done it but he was taken into custody after the police took him to mcdonald's ok so george so i put a bit of a jump in here because we're short for time so what is it then about the national debate that's failing because no matter how many times this happens there never seems to be a proper debate meaningful change which is the point you're making so are we being failed by our political leaders and the president. yes absolutely and that's what needs to change change has to come from that's hot damn so yes people are on the streets throughout the united states and throughout the world in fact protesting and demanding accountability and transparency from their government local state and federal but there will be no change until those government and federal officials
2:31 am
decide that there needs to be a change and lack and act and prosecute and enforce new laws to protect american citizens just a final thought here april so where does the black community go from here then i mean how do you engage with the police with law enforcement to build bridges and bring about real trust off to all this i'm gonna list mistrust well i'm not sure it's on the black community to cross that rapes we've attempted to time and time again and that literally got our hands shot off in some cases and so truly it is the police community law enforcement officials chiefs of police who need to attempt to heal those wounds black people time and time again have turned and said you know we are literally just trying to exist you know but when you see people like brianna teel are shot to death in her own home while sleeping to me a rice
2:32 am
a 12 year old child shot to death in a park trayvon martin and the names go on and on when people are committing committing crimes but just being black can get you killed it's not the black community that needs to extend a helping hand a parade very good to get your thoughts thanks for talking to al jazeera thank you thank you. time for a short break here al-jazeera when we come back who is more restrained china hits back at hong kong criticism with its own view on police tactics and the u.s. plans. were supposed to islam's holiest sites reopens more than statements. and there are plenty of fat is being steaming in across western regions of the
2:33 am
united states in the last year as it really is it just that is a fairly calm picture generally me want to cross the 3 months of trying to care well monday maybe just want to shout pushing up towards new york and then the next batch of rain works its way towards the midwest and across the great lakes also we could be saying on monday some storms developing into the south of texas and i've got one or 2 shots a kid away from the pacific northwest but temperatures of course have really come down quite steadily and quite nasty across much of the desert southwest if you will just pushing in later in the day as we go through chews day still some good sunny skies down into california and still. threatening the southern areas of it texas but not a bad day elsewhen time which is really on the high side typically in the mid to high twenty's even the low thirty's quite a different story across the caribbean and central america it's this that we're watching within this massive cloud you can see here we have of course go tropical storm amanda now as we get.
