i really really not getting anywhere near it you. think. we want to thank you very much we watch the protests remained hands over the death of an unarmed black man in police custody. and we shall carry this is our jazeera live from doha with continuing coverage of the killing of george floyd including it is heating up in the capital protests are set fire outside the white house as curfews come into effect. immediately and fired for using excessive force atlanta's police chief takes action

a series of drawings of defense secret service on the in a perimeter then u.s. park police metropolitan d.c. police keeping the demonstrators distance of about 200 meters away from the white house but about an hour ago there were some bangs throat that sounded near the white house it appeared that police were throwing flash bangs at the demonstrators near the park attempting to get them to disperse then the situation appeared to escalate all of a sudden there were fires breaking out in various areas and what police now describe as acts of vandalism the fire engine has been on the scene but for a while the situation was really tense with police and some elements of the demonstrators in an ongoing standoff some tear gas was fired as i said the flames continuing to lick within view of the white house so certainly the day that had been largely peaceful rather mobbed by the events of the last few hours place in

minnesota how began making arrests as night falls in minneapolis the city's curfew came into effect a short while ago and the nationwide an arrest started there and george floyd was killed by a member of the local police force john hendren is there so john is as has been the pattern there protests are overwhelmingly peaceful throughout the day that as things turned dark and it gets night sometimes it starts to pivot that's what we've been seeing what is the pattern bentonite. well that was the pattern for the 1st 4 days the the protesters really ruled the night took over this city there was burning and looting of numerous buildings and then you got a 1000 extra national guard troops to come in last night on saturday overnight and what happened then is the police really shut the protest down at a certain point and enforced the curfew once again that curfew was largely holding
7:04 am
you can see there are cars here and there a few people on the road and we saw hundreds of protesters violating the curfew early in the evening but let me just show you something michel at the end of that road is a line of police as we drove up toward that line they raised their rifles at us and waved for us to turn and we've had that experience all through the night you can see over here again empty streets on this side but look at the end there that's a bridge in on that bridge is another line of officers and all those lights are a warning if you drive up toward them the 1st thing they do is they shoot rubber bullets and then they're tear grass grenades so we've seen really aggressive action by the police and i must say it's been pretty effective we've gone from thousands of protesters and some burning and looting at the end of the night early on to far fewer but those protesters day they will stay here in the day until those all 4 of
7:05 am
the officers who were involved in the arrest of mr floyd are charged with murder and who knows how long that could be or whether that could happen so yeah let's remind people what what started all this it was the fact that george floyd album was on the ground with derek to find the officers on his neck for 9 minutes he ended up dying and it wasn't us just derrick's of on these things to not happen in a vacuum there were other police officers right there as this was happening what do we know about what is happening with those other officers on. well you're right you're absolutely right there were 4 officers one of them basically did crowd control 3 of them knelt on the back of mr floyd george floyd with his face on the ground bloodied up and one of those officers derek show over who you mentioned was the one with his knee on the neck now mr floyd eventually passed out and we were told that he died at the hospital but he looked pretty lifeless in the video and
7:06 am
this probably would not have come to life had a bystander not taken video of this we found that in the case of look on mcdonald in chicago where it took a year for the video to come out and then that is when the protests began that ended in a murder conviction but in this case there for those 4 officers involved 3 of them faced no charges but they are still subject of a massive investigation and the investigators local hennepin county investigators here say they are aggressively working on that case but so far only one has been charged and people here say they will stay in the streets but as you can see that might be limited to daytime because in the evening for the past 2 nights at least the police have ruled the night ok. john hunter live in minneapolis thank you john . 7 atlanta police officers happened fire for using excessive force on protesters riot police surrounded the car and arrested the couple and side so you can see this
7:07 am
footage shared the police slashed tires broke the window used a taser it did not appear that they were in any way resisting there were still pulled from their car put on the ground and hand cut the city's police she said members of her force cannot be allowed to act with impunity. i think as law enforcement if we are ever going to get out of this space that we are in today we have to recognize that our behaviors cannot consistently be pardoned because we are law enforcement. these these are good guys i know them as individuals i've worked with the one for over 20 years but they made that level of mistake that cannot be rolled back and that he has emerged of a police car being driven into protesters in los angeles so you can see the vehicle it actually makes contact with the protesters then it reverses and they place officer inside drives away rob reynolds is live in los angeles with more for us so
7:08 am
so that is happening in los angeles rob in addition to largely peaceful protests and now a state of emergency so what is the latest and in the greater los angeles area well 1st the result i want to mention that the the church people who were struck by that police vehicle did not appear to be seriously injured so that's a good thing at the moment in downtown los angeles there are groups of people running through the streets unclear exactly what is going on with those groups of people earlier today there were more peaceful protests in santa monica and long beach these were marred unfortunately by looting incidents. even in broad daylight and continuing into the night now just a few moments ago mayor eric garcetti issued a new statement i'll just read it for you off my phone. the our city says to those
7:09 am
who are hurting we here you to those who are smashing and vandalizing business buildings we see you and we will arrest you so there is certainly a very tense situation in the streets of los angeles and its surrounding cities and rachelle i did some google searching earlier and found that there have been. protests in cities all over just my sort of area of this country in the west from from laramie wyoming to el paso texas and anchorage alaska you know i could spend the entire event time like say obs who my my live report just listing those those places yes big and small cities all over the united states and even internationally we saw london earlier vancouver canada thousands of people
7:10 am
gathered there to protest the george floyd killing so this is a national and international phenomenon and i think your point the point you're also leading to is this. this seems different i mean we're seeing protests in cities where you normally don't see protests the crowds look different than what we normally see this seems different would you say that from your experience as a journalist watching these things and reporting on them as well. yeah richelle i would say that this is different it's different in its scope it's nation wide. spread and in the diverse crowd watching all day today the people in santa monica white people black people people of all ancestries latin and asian and you name it. and so there is 0 a more widespread outrage than perhaps in more. in earlier
7:11 am
rioting incidents and of course this comes with the in the context of the covert 19 epidemic and i'm just wondering you know how this could and because in past instances of civil unrest eventually people have to return to their jobs they don't want to get fired so they they stop you know demonstrating during the day or in college students don't want to flunk so they they go back to class well right now millions and millions of people don't have jobs millions and millions of college and high school students don't have class so they may feel that this is a better use of their time and their passion than anything else that they could possibly do in this period of of corn theme lockdown and pandemic so that that doesn't auger well for an early end to all of this i think and that frustration
7:12 am
that you just described also certainly does appear to be a component of all of this rob runnels live for us in los angeles rob thank you there's also been criticism of the police response after a car was seen ramming demonstrators in york city on saturday the patrol car the driver and their drove and 2 protesters behind a barricade the city's mayor bill de blasio says an investigation will take place. that is not the way things are supposed to be there will be a full investigation and a discipline is necessary there will be but do not present only one side of the picture i looked at those videos i saw people converging on the police vehicle i saw people throwing things at the police vehicle that is not peaceful protests so let's not kid ourselves if you or anyone else was inside that police vehicle surrounded by people you would have had a really tough decision to make you can't stay there you can't get out of the vehicle you have to get yourself and the vehicle out of the situation safely for

all. and there have been more protests in new york city on sunday carols andro was among them. and one of the most famous spots in all of america time square and protesters are out in force thousands of them out here making their voices heard you can see them it's young people it's old rich white brown you getting up all cross-section of new york city here they are angry and they are calling for justice and they are taking their message out to all parts of new york city including here right by times square on saturday you saw protests in all the 5 major boroughs or new york city we're seeing protests on sunday as well it is mostly very very peaceful here but the crowds as you can see are absolutely huge some of the largest crowds we have seen in years for protests over in new york city. still

and atlanta to police officers have been fired for using excessive force on protesters on saturday riot police swarmed a car slashed the 1st tires and use a taser on 2 people before dragging them to the ground and handcuffed in. a video has emerged of a police car being driven into protesters in los angeles vehicle say making contact with the protesters the police officer inside then reverses that speed and drives away. from mark tyler is a pastor at the mother bethel african methodist episcopal church he was at the latest protests and philadelphia. well we were actually out there last night and we were out this evening as well and in both cases what you witnessed really are 2 crowds one group is there intent on raising the message that we want justice for george floyd briana taylor in kentucky and a mob are barry in georgia then there are others who were just there really

kind of just in the moment themselves maybe not necessarily part of the protest there was considerable looting but i've got ideas about that as well and so heavy police presence on 52nd street in west philadelphia today. even saw a tank driving down and it's strange that we can afford a tank until adelphia we can't get why for our school children so dr king famously said that people have been quoting it a lot the riots are it's the voice of the unheard but he also had a very powerful piece on the looting that many people don't realize is out there just saw this morning for the 1st time and for me it really made sense he talks about the catharsis of the act of looting for young people in poor people who have been deprived of all of the things that they see around them philadelphia is the poorest big city in america i cannot speak for any other place i can only speak for this place 26 percent poverty rate been in the area almost 20 years and i've

george floyd campaign has gone global with people in london also showing their support thousands of protesters gathered outside the u.s. embassy some health signs reading the u.k. is not an innocent their ally was organized by the local chapter of black lives matter and other events are planned elsewhere in the u.k. and in baba reports from outside the u.s. embassy in london. before sunday's protest here in london the city's mayor city can put out a tweet reminding people that coronavirus was still around or that they should stay home if possible that wasn't a direct reference to the demonstration but what happened was people weren't deterred by any perceived risk they turned out in the many many hundreds. of the square in the center of london. chanting things like no justice no peace like lives matter say my name george floyd all things which we've heard in the us some of them kneeling down they were eventually moved on by police and made their way through westminster past downing street the official residence of prime minister boris
7:21 am
johnson a small group there chanted against him accusing him of being racist them for his perceived use of racist language in the past they then made their way here to the us embassy for a while at least and there's a lot of anger but by and large the protest was peaceful i've seen a few arrests throughout the day but generally people were commenting on how the protest was good natured this is all against the backdrop of what people say is a misunderstanding here that there's only police brutality against black people in the us where as people here point out that there have been incidents of deaths of black men in power in police custody over the last few decades with very little numbers of them convictions or prosecutions against police officers so that was behind the passion that you saw on the streets of london and other cities in the u.k. on sunday. gather some of the other news around the world for you right now on

a rethink about how cities and towns are built on a takes a look at how health priorities have got governments thinking critically about urban design. as more people emerge from the coronavirus hibernation the finding their communities a changing in many cities and towns around the world footpads of being widened to allow for more space between pedestrians or as it's known now social distancing more cycle lanes are being created so there's less reliance on public transport in new zealand so called technical urban ism the process of making quick interim low cost changes that over time become permanent was being trial before the pandemic now the government is investing in modifying city streets momentum has been built and certainly a lot of people that we work with the local council around the country on their bar already thinking about the why of operating on work and and so i think the crown of our us kind of artists personalized some of the kind of effect of tolls labor has
