rapidly changing the world we live in again breaks it down that was a slogan that won it for the prime minister boris johnson counting the cost on al-jazeera. al-jazeera. hello i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera live from london coming up on the program. we could be forgiven for leaving. our. democratic presidential hopeful joe biden condemns donald trump's handling of the nationwide police brutality protests george floyds family and friends tell of their grief at his violent death. the 1st confirmed the covert 1000 deaths is reported at
1:01 am
the world's largest refugee camp in bangladesh and we look at how the coronavirus following on from years of drought is crippling profits from a vital cash crop in zimbabwe. hello thank you for joining us the family of george florida who was killed when a police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly 9 minutes has just spoken of their grief john hendren is in st paul the capital of minnesota state john you're in simple the family we're speaking from minneapolis which of course is where george floyd was killed a very emotive speech from him i don't know how much you could hear of it but how
1:02 am
important is it to see the family man the side of george forward considering everything that's going on in the u.s. right now. i think it's been really important to help humanize him see this in other cases in the rodney king case in l.a. and others where these these people have been dehumanized by being accused of a crime by being known in video only for being the body beneath police officers and this is really an effort to say this is a family man he was driving a truck he loved his daughter he came to minneapolis for work that you know he was a man who believed in peace that he would not want the kind of violence we've seen in these protests all of this sort of put a human face on who george floyd is it's the kind of thing you see in court when a lawyer is trying to humanize someone who's been charged or something to try to explain you know who they are and why they ended up in that terrible place and
1:03 am
that's what his family is doing right now and i think they've done a pretty effective job of painting a picture of a man who really was not out to harm anybody he wasn't trying to do anything wrong and just ended up on the wrong side of police on a bad day and things just went horribly horribly wrong. for me of. justice. very
1:04 am
upsetting testimony there of course from the mother of george floyd's daughter and she ends by mentioning justice for his killing so we're where are we at now john when it comes to getting justice for george floyd. we've heard this again and again from the family terence floyd has said this and then now you have the mother of george floyd's daughter saying the same thing with a want is is for the officers involved and not just the one who has already been charged eric chauvin who's been charged with manslaughter and 3rd degree murder they want all 4 of the officers who were involved to be charged with serious charges there was an autopsy that the family commissioned that concluded that 3 of those officers directly contributed to george floyd's it as fixation which led to his death 3 of them knelt on his back one of them derek chauvin the one who knelt
1:05 am
on george floyd's neck he is the one already facing charges but the rest of them are not and that's what a lot of people in the street are looking for they want to see charges against those officers but there is a sense that there is a more systematic problem with the minneapolis police the they've got 40 percent of a minority population in that city and yet when it comes to excessive force cases by police they are 67 percent of those involved minorities about $65.00 i'm sorry it's something like 65 percent of them involve minorities and that the governor has decided that simply too much and he has launched an a human rights investigation into the minneapolis police department and while that investigation is going on he also wants them to cooperate with immediate changes systematic changes to try to make that a more racially safe police department but essentially what people are looking for is justice in this case and then systematic change that there can be justice in the

future. john hendren with the latest from same call and thank you. well the family of george floyd has accepted an offer from former boxer floyd mayweather to pay for his funeral mayweather will handle the costs of the service on june 9th and floyd's hometown of houston it will also pay for memorials in minnesota and north carolina. well tuesday's protests in washington d.c. of course followed the use of tear gas by authorities to clear the area on monday allowing donald trump to visit a local church for a photo opportunity us them across a presidential candidate joe biden has slammed donald trump's response to nationwide protests over racism and police brutality accusing the president of fanning the flames of hate by then also criticize trump's visit the same jones episcopal church when peaceful protesters. disturbed in order for a president. the pressure from the doorstep of the people's house the white house

using tear gas 'd and flash grenades learned to stage a photo all of federal one of the most historic churches in the country or at least in washington d.c. we could be forgiven for believing the president's words this is a power that in principle. we're just serving the passion it was based on. the people is clear well and the visit to our religious shrine on tuesday by the president excuse me also drew criticism trump and the 1st lady visited a shrine in the capital honoring the late roman catholic pope john paul the 2nd the catholic archbishop of washington d.c. criticize the move saying it's reprehensible that places of worship would allow themselves to be misused in such a way. meanwhile an australian news crew are the latest members of the media to be

attacked by police during the us protests against racism and police brutality. that would. think oh oh. fairly in prime minister scott morrison is asked for an investigation after a cameraman was punched by an officer during a live broadcast police across the united states have been criticized for pepper spraying attacking and the arresting accredited members of the press. while it's just after 6 pm in washington d.c. that means there's less than an hour before the curfew in the u.s. capitol comes into effect this is the scene now take a look as crowds have been building in the area around the white house and the capitol precinct for some hours and yet the protests have been without incident their share of protests and seeing who joins us now. ship everyone is quite people
1:09 am
are just as standing up now tell us what's going on. it's amazing because he's on finals and thousands of appearance on the streets of washington today to commemorate and protest following the death of the murder of george floyd it's fascinating as you say where i am from the kathy are those so many more people here today than there were yesterday thousands as i said i'm just here we keep seeing other groups of protesters who stayed here for a little while but never go off marching we think we saw thousands of them who want towards the capitol we know there are other protests up in wisconsin i would you like 3 miles away up in bethesda which is sort of you know the really kind of the very affluent area on the outskirts of washington with the several protests going on around d.c. thousands of files the thousands are fleeing if they if they remove yesterday's show of force trying to storage for temporary just well as the entirely predictable
1:10 am
would have to have the opposite effect because one sounds not just for thousands of people but come out and show their solidarity and show you the idea but to stay be a few thoughts were explicitly said only on the clues on twitter and social media come out where a mosque stay off the curfew. what could only imagine what they might be planning if they got to clear the streets around this time for the curfew this would be college because we now have. 8 foot fence which is which is not sprung up between us and the police the weird thing about that is everything feels a lot calmer and safe and i've everything we think it's as if they're that the police are kind of in that cage little bit yesterday this time it was rather terrifying because the police line was just that and this is they really as a rule is that this strategy was clearly they were open to it i've seen it so many demonstrations now i just lay in wait they just stay there probably calm without
1:11 am
water you know suddenly move forward for a few flashbacks pepper spray a few people and i'm to back it off a little while just keeping everyone no edge it was a cave stop it over that but it's it's it's a get out that fence because a real focal point clearly with a lot of value of the fence a lot of shaking of the fence and you do wonder what would happen if that fence went down but just the just the concept of a curfew and circumstances like this when you have. multiple multiple thousands of people the streets right now in washington d.c. i just don't you just wonder what's going to happen in the coming hours if they all determined to have another show forces they did yesterday at the urging of president trump who is now in control we have federal authority federal control now off the national guard we already know that federal authorities are reached out to see whether they can take over washington the washington police force and the mare's unhappy about that and i said that they will go to the courts of this any
1:12 am
attempt at this but even their insurrection act has not been in the books we have we have u.s. military units national guard overseas the d.c. national guard troops are also units of the military that we've seen anyway basically deployed around washington d.c. we understand. we set the scene to hardware around d.c. . repoint donald trump all this is going to stray should who now have control apparently even without invoking the insurrection act the site of a deed to be used if the thousands of thousands on the streets right now despite. despite the curfew. it's a rather interesting situation as you can imagine well the curfew should start in about 45 minutes from now although in the past few days police started moving in before the actual curfew so we will be crossing live to you again soon and she have just to see what is going on you'll be monitoring developments for us until then she had returned seat in washington d.c. for the moment thank you. and now let's go to new york and gabrielle joins us now
1:13 am
from new york city with a curfew has been brought forward for me 11 pm local to 8 pm so what reaction has there been that there in new york to that bringing forth of the curfew . will show you what the reaction has been right now we are in the middle of a huge protest right now in bryant park in the heart of midtown manhattan i think it's going to pivot around a kind of show you just a little bit of to crowd just a huge huge crowd of people here all calling for justice a calling for an end to police brutality and primarily calling for justice for george ploy this has been a more steady stream. this is normally just. have pork and they are going to be. demonstrating through the streets here of manhattan i want to bring in one of my guests here one of our new this is
1:14 am
a grown chorus how are you today thank you for joining us why are you here today here in light of the recent racist events happening in our country i think it's time for us as a community to take a stand when you see this here right now these huge number of people it makes me proud to know that our citizens are having their voices heard it's time to stand up for what's right what do you want out there. i want justice but i also want peace and i want this. so magically people to realize that black lives matter i mean this is not something new i think it's something that's been vacuumed my eyes because of technology and now i think the pot has over boiled is this just about your war of words if we come about more than that it's it's about george sly but it's also more than that it's about racism that's been going on for hundreds of years in our country. we're in the middle of
1:15 am
a pandemic and you know. how do you feel about that coming up the phone kind of going after students and kind of going to the front of fire here i think it's important that we all remember that there are people out there who are putting themselves on the front lines my mother was a nurse and i have friends and family who are doctors or hospitals but it's also important simultaneously to you remember that we have to fight for justice so both are very important issues for just a quick last question there has been some to have somebody from hoboken for whom the governor is talking about maybe preparing the national guard to the streets from france called for that what do you say about this what are your thoughts on some of these difficult things that we've seen i know different people react differently to what's been going on in our country and you're going to do what you know do necessary but i think i think it's important for us to maintain the peace and i am not a fan of the looting and rioting because that can ruin lives i'm a business owner myself but you're going to protest in the way that you deem
1:16 am
necessary and i'm here for peace so peace and justice hearing last quick thought from you people around the world are watching this and one or 2 sentences what is your message to people right now watching what's happening here right the message to people around the world is that racism is unacceptable whether here in the united states or throughout the throughout the world thank you very much thank you and a good luck that that was wrong or one of the thousands of people out here to. part in these protests the curfew kicks in here in new york city in about 2 hours or so but as you can see from these images images do not lie and this is an absolutely huge protest calling for justice. for. handling its own that was the main suspect in that case the new york 16 thank you. let's go to the side of the country now the west coast a curfew remains in place in los angeles which has seen some of the biggest unrest
1:17 am
and looting let's go live now to brian also los angeles a seen its share of violence what is it looking like now. well it's gotten much more tense here in just the last 30 minutes or so there. were marchers going up and down hollywood boulevard here several 1000 of them the police then arrived set up a kind of skirmish line and began firing these these phone projectiles out from there there are. weapons and now we've got a situation where there are demonstrators on all sides of this intersection and police are forming a line here to keep the demonstrators in place. i did not see any aggression by any of the demonstrators towards the police or any of the attacks on
1:18 am
them and the objects thrown at them but i can't be sure that there wasn't anything like that but i witnesses told me there was a police helicopters overhead. it's of the chaotic scene here and you can see here the demonstrators are just facing off with this line of the los angeles police officers. and there are several 1000 people over there this is quite a a well known intersection hollywood and vine it's kind of synonymous with show business now it's becoming more identified with the chaos and intention the protesters of course are denouncing police brutality the death of george boyd and the others in the answer. it's involving the police there are also many of them carrying signs saying the phone the police
1:19 am
a large share of the budget of the city of los angeles goes to wards the police department soldiers are kind of growing movement among the protesters who say let us. start funding social programs instead of all of those. police activities so. it's that's about the situation here barbara again as you mentioned right there is you are you know or i'm busy right now right no media network you work because we've been seeing a lot of strange stuff on the media stuff like. people are just. as interested they're making the point that the on t.v. a military occupation. always worth reminding that of course the vast majority of the protests have been peaceful even though we have seen violence in the we're seeing it in many cities across the u.s. said rob thank you for that obviously
1:20 am
a difficult place to report from for the moment from reynolds in los angeles thank you rob. coming up this news hour a string of landslides strikes india killing at least 20 people. and police brutality and research in brazil problem the protesters say president jalal so i know is only making it worse. plus petrol is flowing again in venezuela but in $0.50 a liter it's never been so expensive. voters in 8 u.s. states and the district of columbia are taking part in primary elections to choose their pick for the race for the white house president donald trump is likely to face the presumptive democratic nominee former vice president joe biden but many states have postponed their vote until now because of the pandemic patty cohen has
1:21 am
more now from bill in maryland. nobody thought that the election would look like this just a few months ago everybody wearing masks and they have all this. these procedures in place to make sure people are socially distance only so many can go into one time to vote but in maryland they do something different normally you have to show up to vote or you can in some cases ask for an absentee ballot but the republican governor of the state he sent out ballots to pretty much everyone in maryland average voter so what we're seeing is a lot of people still goes out in advance and you can mail them in or they were dropping them in that box behind me so it might be that there are fewer polling places but i can't remember a time recent memory where there was this much traffic at the u.s. primary vote so it'll be interesting to see when the numbers come out and i've been speaking to voters both democrats and republicans and democrats say this handling of these police crackdowns and these peaceful protesters for the most part that they are just fired up even more because they see the president is really stoking
1:22 am
racial tensions to make his base happy the same time i talked to republican voter and he said for him it's all about immigration he thinks the president did just as much as he could when it comes to the coronavirus and the economic fallout and then he claimed the protesters for the police actions so you're seeing people really dig into their political identity that said the president's approval numbers are falling quite a bit there they're really quite down quite a bit in just last couple of weeks so this election will definitely be a referendum on u.s. president donald trump and how he's handled all of the different crises. a bomb has exploded in a mosque in the afghan capital kabul at least 2 people including a well known cleric were killed and 2 others wounded people where there was the attack that car in moscow for evening prayers it's unclear who was behind the attack. landslides have killed at least 20 people in india's northeastern state
1:23 am
over asama homes and residents were buried in mud and children are among the dead as how the u.n. has war. an entire village rallies to save a neighbor among those who survived the landslides along indians bark valley for other families a loss of hope or you know need to rush to an ambulance as this man carries a lifeless body. don't let the families were still sleeping when the landslides washed over their homes there was no warning and no time to scape. amir's says he lost his father mother and 3 siblings he desperately tried to save them but it was too late mr this is just it was early in the morning and it was raining hard and then the landslide hit all the houses drowned under the mud. before rescue teams arrived neighbors trying to find survivors i only managed to save his 2 children
1:24 am
but lost his teenage sister i mean they are going to come not come home oh yeah i was in the middle of my morning routine i walked towards the street and then i heard the noise and saw the landslide i didn't know what to do i realized that my son and daughter were both under the mud 1st i dragged my younger child out and then i started shouting asking people for help i didn't give my son to my father and tried to drag my daughter out i managed to rescue her but i couldn't find my young sister. heavy rains hit districts along indians' border with bangladesh in recent days thousands of people took shelter in awesome state last month when heavy floods threatened entire villages. even more concerning the region is expecting the monsoon season in the coming days now as an entire community mourns its also bracing for more rain. the civilian al-jazeera.

anti-racism demonstrations have been ongoing in brazil a country were around 50 percent of the population is black or mixed race protesters say abuse against them has the terry rate of even more since presidential power cut i support reports. dozens of protesters chanted stop killing us on the streets of rio. even the spread of coalwood 19 in the country did not prevent them from demanding an end to police brutality in south america's largest nation why did you bet we are here today because we want to leave we're here today because we are tired of this genocidal state we're here to say no more here in the names of those killed in police operations were read out loud most of them have one thing in common they're black and poor was police said the protesters were throwing stones so they confronted

them with tear gas and non-lethal force. 2 weeks ago a 14 year old teenager was killed by police during a radio. the autopsy report shows that the boy was shot in the back by a rifle while playing with his cousins in his room was in 2019 over 800 people were killed in police related incidents a surge of hundreds in a state with a long history of police brutality and the political leadership including president jalal son out of himself who vowed to dig graves to stop crime this year already over $600.00 people have been killed the increase in recent had it because there is an increase in crime or because now there isn't this force from president kerry was the narrow and way authorize. we had a problem controlling the police profitable sonora but at least there was a discourse at least they were trying to address
1:27 am
a problem before the military police try to reduce the amount of people killed but when he came to power along with the current governor of rio de janeiro that changed they say there is no problem and they dare tell the police to kill more as if that's going to solve rio's crime problem human rights groups also say that the pace of killings is astounding. if the us police were killing people at the same rate as those killed in rio you would have in the us at least $36000.00 deaths per year for it people have not only been protesting in the religion aid office but in other cities as well. they say racism is already part of brazil's reality and president jalal also natto is making the situation even worse was there is a war. drivers of venezuela are facing a hike in petrol prices after the government scrapped that subsidy system feel is

now being imported from iran the spy there as well having the world's. just oil reserves are latin america editor of a senior when explaining. in venezuela a story of raising petrol prices has been a kin to the fable of the little boy who cried wolf and just like the little boy in the story that government had been vowing to raise prices at the pump for so long that many couldn't believe that when this week it actually happened. half a dollar per liter only had $3.00 which was 6 liters of petrol according to the new rate but it's still bad and very poorly organized because we're in a super oil rich country. for most bin is whalen's it's a shock petrol has always been cheap but in the last few years it became virtually free with hyperinflation running at nearly 2000000 percent there were no bills or coins small enough to pay for a full tank now they have to pay at international prices just slightly less than in

the united states. we should have a minimum salary like people in the us like in colombia the minimum wage in columbia's fast superior to ours which is $4.00 you can charge a national prices but such a low income but while raising fuel prices after more than 2 decades is a sensitive issue continuing to give it away was unsustainable with a near collapse of bitter fire the opec member had been suffering acute petrol shortages now thanks to shipments from iran petrol is flowing again. there is the 1st time i've come to fill up and i really didn't have to wait in line as long as i'm used to doing here i just put in 4 liters 2 dollars and it was actually fast. still long the lines are very different from the time when people used to have to line up for 3 days to fill up. many are paying in dollars because cash in believe that it's the local currency is

a scarce as petrol used to be and the debit card machines don't often work. public transport will continue to be completely subsidized by the government despite threats from the united states iran says it will continue sending venezuela supplies if it requests it. and venezuelans will have to pay for it at a premium something that's never happened before and yet comes at a time when people have never had so little to see in human al-jazeera. fair gas has been fired at hundreds of demonstrators rallying against police brutality in the french capital paris the protests began peacefully outside a courthouse for police later moved to clear large crowds in other parts of the city protesters want to draw attention to the case of a dam a try their 24 year old black man who died in police custody 4 years ago the rally also drew supporters of the black lives matter movement in the united states that

hash of out there has more from paris. where these protesters have come to denounce racism and police violence thousands have gathered at the foot of one of my arses high courts a symbol of justice justice something the same many people here say that they are so often denied many people here say that they are often the victims over police harassment and they have come to support the family of adam archer or a young man akin to a 24 years old back in 2016 died in police custody his family have always said that it was the police who course is their police have denied those claims for many people you can see why the death of george floyd in the united states resonates with them. also their rhetoric it's time that people wake up and realize it's not normal that people continue to die during police checks as it is today we are fed up we are tired we are scared for our children brothers and sisters it must stop.
1:32 am
all street is absolutely packed with protesters you can see even more standing out on that wall 1st far as i can see anyway more they have been saying is that they are simply fed up with what they cool police harassment being unfairly treated by priests particularly young people of african in north african descent who live in the suburbs who say that the police treat them differently to other french citizens they say they are fed up they say they're fed up of being treated as 2nd class citizens they're watching what is going on in the united states and many. still to come on this hour of medical waste in bangladesh a growing problem made all the more hazardous by the coronavirus.

however got a lot of fine and dry weather across much of australia having said that as this area cloud made its way through it's a cold front so we've seen some much cooler air just talking into parts of new south wales and over the high ground and a little dusting of snow for good measure it will stay all the blustery side into the southeast will see the showers just pulling away across the tasman then making the way to new zealand where we need the rainfall and boy you're going to see some as we go on through the next couple of days whether will sweep its way through will tell a little colder as well temperatures in crush struggling to get to around 12 celsius as we go through thursday around 19 in oakland back across australia as you can see it is set fair over the next couple of days have plenty of pleasant sunshine. sunshine so into northern parts of china but it's a decent different story for the satellites a cloud into those central areas some heavy rain here flooding rains a seasonal front making its way through his the my you front so little bit of wet weather also making.
