6:00 pm
says are protecting a high risk populations like the elderly and those in nursing homes while allowing younger and healthier americans to get back to work immediately and open up our schools open them up. we understand this disease now we don't understand it nobody's ever seen it before it's very tough very contagious very mean to certain people we've learned a lot we didn't know nobody knew anything about it but we learned a lot and i have to thank everybody for working so hard jared and my and the task force and all of the people the admiral the general who was saying oh you should use that bull's eye said i didn't you should use general so i said i did use them both we had some incredible people on the task force the job they did in getting ventilators built by the 1000s we're giving to nigeria to france to spain to italy went to many many countries to u.k. they're having a hard time we're giving them ventilators it's great thing i mean very hard to make
6:01 pm
their long term items we mobilize nobody's ever seen anything like it just like the 2nd world war there hasn't been a mobilization like this since the 2nd world war especially ventless because it's hard it's big it's complex very complex machinery computerized all over the place and very expensive and we're building thousands a week right now we're building thousands a week we have all we can use no governor you hear the calls you listen in on those corps frankly you're invited to if you want but you do anyway even if you're not invited. and you see what's going on every governor has not been one patient. in this entire massive country and we didn't have ventilators where we started the coverage were empty the previous administration left us empty cupboards there isn't one patient not one that needed a ventilator that didn't get one think of that and we talking about millions of people big country millions of people not one person needed
6:02 pm
a ventilator that didn't get it so we want the continued blanket lockdown to end for these states we may have some members or some ashes or we may have some flames coming but we'll put them out we'll stop them out we understand this now will stop them out or we'll stop them out very very powerfully so we made a big step in our comeback this was always going to be 3 months ago i said to you and this is a very important period this june period because we're going to learn whether or not this is a very big powerful r word recession or whether this is a hurricane that we recover from very quickly we recover from in a matter of weeks or days and we've learned we've learned again as good as these numbers are the best numbers are yet to come because so many areas are still closed
6:03 pm
or very partially closed very few actually are fully open these numbers are with states 50 states and very few are fully open even the ones that are very out there are not fully fully opened. so we're going have some tremendous numbers coming in when you look at the ridership in the airlines what they've done they went from 2 percent to a number that if it's correct that be surprised actually but it's a very high number it's great people are traveling and you know what they're traveling in the united states and they're also driving and they're building the trailers they build a lot of things they're driving people or people are driving i may have to buy one of those things drive around town maybe i'll drive back to new york with our 1st lady in a trailer what do they call that. an r.v. an r.v. well you should know indiana is the capital of r.v. i think i'm going to buy an r.v. and travel for now on an r.v. with our 1st lady i don't think anybody would mind that so we've come together
6:04 pm
we're coming together we've never had a thing happen like this we were all including the media we're all in uncharted territory we're on charge it never happened before nobody knew i couldn't be sure i felt it i felt i felt we're very powerful to come back hardest decision i ever made was when they all walked in a big group of people professionals very professional people good people they said sir the best thing we could do is close it down i said what are you talking about we have this incredible unbelievable country that's never done better and you want to close it down i can't do that what are you talking about and after listening for 10 minutes in take long i said i think we have to close it down because of the contagion and because of the power it had with especially certain people that we didn't know the 2nd part we knew was highly contagious because it spread like fire but we didn't know that it hit certain groups of people that helps us so much in testing and other things so we're going to protect our. elderly we're going to
6:05 pm
protect especially our elderly with problems whether it's heart or diabetes or any problem it's like a magnet i mean you're elderly and you have diabetes or you have a bad heart it's it's like a magnet they say if you are if you're heavy so i say thank goodness i'm in perfect shape thank goodness but if you're if you're heavy it's not good it's it's a brutal brutal thing and again i started by saying we're going to have a vaccine soon i said it a long time ago based on knowledge based on knowledge as a meeting with these geniuses based on knowledge i said a long time ago i said by the end of the i think it's going to be a lot sooner than that and you know just in finishing about vaccines we have mobilized the logistics arm of our military we could move hundreds of thousands of men and women in a very short time the vaccine is easy by comparing but we can move hundreds of
6:06 pm
thousands it's meant for war it's not meant for this but we have our war with the invisible enemy it's meant for war but we could move hundreds of thousands hunt think of their hundreds of thousands in a very short time the same people are doing the vaccine and they're fully mobilized so now i'm going to sign legislation to make important changes to the p.p.p. that will especially help restaurants hotels and other businesses that have been very hard hit by the virus this is going to make it 24 months and i think you know the legislation as well as i do i want to thank the democrats we had essentially a unanimous vote so i think in the senate of the house right. whether it's unanimous or very close lot of people but i want to thank the democrats who are together on a great and i hope we can get along with the democrats it's been a disaster in terms of relationship but i hope we get a loan because it's a great thing for a country we did all of these numbers and all of this great just we have the
6:07 pm
greatest economy we've ever had it will soon be greater than it was even before we did this with this court we did this with a senate and house that we're not dealing with us and we were dealing with them either the level of of. let's just say the war like part posture is ridiculous because. we have a great country it would make a difference if we could get along and maybe we can and maybe we can i mean there are a lot of differences we want low taxes we want closed borders we want people to come in but they have to come in through america they want open borders you can have open borders especially now when you have a pandemic we set a record by the way on our southern border the wall which you never hear about is up to 210 miles long and one of the reasons we're setting a record is we have so much wall built and we'll have it up to almost 500 miles very early next year by the end of this year will be over 400 miles we're up to 210
6:08 pm
miles of serious wall this is a wall that people aren't penetrating this is a very very powerful wall going to be up there a long time and it's saved us a lot of anguish and grief but you don't hear about that one of the hardest things i've ever had to do is get. the money necessary which is billions of dollars from a party that was totally opposed that they gave me other things the military we could rebuild was uneasy in terms of that that's not their natural instinct but for the wall no you can't have a can't have a can't have it we had 9 court cases on the wall but we won and we got it and now nobody talks about it nobody even talks about it but it's great for a country we have to have borders and i've said often i said long before i won i won on that great november day seems like a long time ago 2016 i said if you don't have borders you don't have a country so we have
6:09 pm
a lot of things to work with the democrats if we could work along with them it would be great if we don't we're going to do great as a country anyway going to do great anyway but if we could work along with the democrats and i'm open to it people say i would be open why would i be open they did things that they should have never done and you know what i'm talking about should have never done but i'm totally open to it but we could go even steps further but it's already been historic nobody has done more in 3 and a half years than this administration has done nobody has come close to doing the things we've done we've rebuilt our military we've cut regulations at a level that nobody's even come close to and that's whether it's 4 years 8 years or in one case even more than that nobody's done anything close regulations low taxes rebuilt military take care of our vets we got a choice approved for the vets so instead of waiting in line for 4 weeks to see a doctor they can go immediately out get a private doctor we pay for the bill and the vet is in great shape and we actually
6:10 pm
save money but more importantly we save their lives and we save the quality of their life. they were dying they would come onto a line that have to wait for 5 weeks they wouldn't be very sick by the time they see the doctor they'd be terminally ill we don't have that anymore you don't hear any bad stories about the vets anymore that doesn't mean go out and find them as tonight you'll be traveling all over the world looking for an unhappy vet and we got accountability because we had a lot of bad people in the v.a. v.a. accountability where we can now fire people that don't treat our vets good we have sadists we have the we have a lot of bad people and we can now which called v.a. care and ability almost 50 years they've been trying to get it choice almost 50 years they've been trying to get it for many many years i've been hearing about it for years they've been trying to get v.a. choice choice be to could have a choice of a doctor you don't have to wait in line if you have
6:11 pm
a long line i have to say the v.a. has great doctors can't get on very quickly now they go outside and they take care of themselves so we had a great morning this is just the beginning it's going to be incredible i'm going to sign our very important piece of legislation again thank you very much to the democrats and then we're going to have a couple of words by a few of the people standing alongside of me i want to thank them so much and we'll talk to you soon. you want to hold as their english live from the rose garden here in washington d.c. where president trump is signing more legislation to protect workers he's been speaking for at least 45 minutes it's just past few minutes past 15 g.m.t. let's bring in our white house correspondent kelly hellcats who's been listening in also kimberly to what the president had to say this was supposed to be a press conference about the rather surprising news coming on the jobs front but he sort of also went out on a bit of
6:12 pm
a tangent. yeah this was a freewheeling press conference that was about the surprise job numbers the gains that were made in the creation of jobs last month in the united states but the u.s. president used it much like a campaign rally to essentially give his opinions on the news of the day and a number of topics unscripted there was no teleprompter there so it's very clear the u.s. president had a lot on his mind and he used the opportunity we'll start with the economy where the u.s. president is celebrating the fact that it was predicted that there would be an unemployed at great rate now somewhere in the 20 percent mark one in 5 americans that the job losses would have been added as of last month but instead what we saw are the creation of 2 and a half 1000000 jobs and that is something that u.s. president is making the headlines calling it the great american comeback he says
6:13 pm
that this is exactly what he had been telling 7 americans that are out of work and feeling despair that the bones of the economy are strong that coronaviruses the reason the economy was turned off but once these states reopen those jobs will come back it's called to be shaped recovery versus the l. shape where the jobs disappear for a long period of time so he is touting this vs shaped recovery and saying that he did every decision correctly of course his opponent in the upcoming presidential election former vice president joe biden says that every decision was wrong and this is have a number of deaths as a result of not closing the country sooner and also that the economic recovery really will be much longer some experts have predicted it could take 10 years for the jobs to come back and that is why you heard the u.s. president already countering that narrative because we know that joe biden is set to speak today as well saying that if the wrong people win the white house essentially predicted economic gloom and doom so this is
6:14 pm
a president celebrating what he's. sees as a success but make no mistake about it what this was was somewhat of a campaign rally where the u.s. president was speaking directly to voters trying to say vote for me in november if you want your jobs and you can be didn't miss an opportunity to talk about the security services in terms of the national guard and i quote i hope you'll use them just call me if you want the national guard of course talking about governors and about the social unrest that america has experience over what the past 12 days. this has really been pushing the narrative that whether it's militarizing the streets of washington d.c. whether we saw that heavy presence of the national guard in minneapolis that this has been the turning point in quelling some of the violence that are robs once the sun goes down for the most part of the protests of course in the united states have been peaceful but there have been those that the administration says have hijacked
6:15 pm
this have been riding looting stealing the even murdering in some cases so his argument is that he has said he's a large order president is to as you said just now dominate the streets he says he wants equal and fair treatment for all americans and while he was talking about this economic message he was also you could tell in a time of i'm rest looking to americans of color saying i can bring your jobs back to that your unemployment numbers and communities of color were apt historic lows that is correct but what we know is that the president's poll numbers i'm out among this key demographic are pitifully low and the u.s. president is trying to reach out to them even saying that he is the one that has created opportunities so he in fact said he's done more for the black community than any other president of course that is a fact that we be disputed but this is how the president speaks these sort of broad strokes he speaks in superlatives and this was no exception whether or not this is going to help a lot of the tensions in the country i suspect not but certainly this is the
6:16 pm
argument that the u.s. president has been making in fact at one point and this may inflame much of the african-american community he said i hope george floyd and of course that is the victim the man in minnesota who had his head on the ground as a as a police officer kneeled on his neck ultimately dying he said i hope that he is looking down this is a great day for equality there's no question there's still a lot that needs to be done in the united states for you equality and perhaps the u.s. president make it some blowback for those statements. intakes of breath i think were taken gladly will not one not completely but of course to be taken as rallying cry about what he can do for the economy what he can do for the american people outside of washington if you i was telling him what was. yeah he's headed to may where he will be visiting a suave manufacturer this is part of the crowd of virus testing but it's also important to know we're in full campaign mode now what you just saw was
6:17 pm
a campaign rally now he is going for the photo opportunity to tout the successes of the tast in the united states of course a friction point because there was a shortage of testing early on and many would argue it's still not where it needs to be for this economy to reopen for a phase 2 in phase 3 we're only in the early stages and you heard the president acknowledging there are some states that are heavily populated like california new jersey new york have not yet reopened even in the extensive 1st phase so testing is critical this is why he's going to maine to talk about this to push that testing and again we expect the president to make the argument that we're in the midst of what he calls the great american comeback and well there are finger job numbers today his argument is elect me and those numbers will continue to improve things won't stop well the day is still young i'm sure we'll get more analysis from you can be through the day committee how it is that all white house correspondents think you.
6:18 pm
know hold on to another major story that we're following lots from libya and scientists linked to the u.n. recognized government to celebrating the sudden collapse of the warlord khalifa have to still says 14 months after taking old trying to take over the company they have retaken the city of to whom the strategically important base for have to schools is in western libya it's about 65 kilometers from the comfort of tripoli dosage of all responsible. celebrating another important game. forces for the un backed government of national accord in control of tohu now the city was the last major stronghold of world war khalifa haftar in western libya in the mosul after we were all keen to achieve the victory without hesitation who is a big difference between a solid fighter who fights for his cause and another one who does what goes without
6:19 pm
a cause will be defeated if you don't have a cause to fight for we have a cause for the air of the thousands here the turkeys military support has helped the internationally recognized governments of national accord to a series of territorial gains in recent weeks. as well as ending have 2 hours 14 month attempt to capture tripoli that led to battles in the capital southern suburbs and rocket attacks on the city center. after our self declared libyan national army which is backed by russia the u.a.e. and egypt said its troops were being withdrawn from tripoli in order to give the ceasefire talks a chance to who know was the main launch pad for the offensive against the capital that have to use force as finally abandoned this week. g.n.a.t. commander said forces had reached the center of town huna after entering from 4 sides. but the l.n.h. continues to control in eastern libya where there is
6:20 pm
a parallel administration into broke as well as large parts of the south where the main oil fields are located the united nations has warned the recent flood of weapons and fighters to both sides in libya risks in a major new escalation has those offensive on no tripoli had 2 key strongholds it was launched from 2 key strongholds the 1st was a what the or the airbase that was taken not too long ago and the 2nd was. after the fall of the what the other half those forces knew that they could not hold on to. tripoli offensive so they began to withdraw some of their troops and don't want to or the news from total of comes after the d.n.a. went to moscow and after the meeting between and again and several hours the president of the g n a where it's believed that turkey and russia are now negotiating a framework of cooperation so today it's unclear whether it fell because of the military attack by the d.n.a. forces or whether this is part of a negotiated exchange between the russians and between the turks with regards to
6:21 pm
libya but in terms of its significance it means the end complete end of half that as a tripoli offensive a new diplomatic effort is underway to try to restart talks on a lasting cease fire and ending 9 years of civil war since the overthrow and killing of longtime ruler muammar gadhafi. dorsetshire pari al jazeera. he said this report. as you can see here and here behind me the government forces out and now in control of the city also who are absolutely killing the victory the defeat of happiness forces in the city of huna now all by losing. the major the last assumed hold in western libya as you know that. switched over of the secure for whom the swift seizure of the city off the huna is
6:22 pm
mainly a tribute to the turkish military support for the government forces and also the risk through all of this 'd russian medicine raise from the bagnall group who have been fighting alongside after forces now. this city the city afternoon at about 75 kilometers south of the capital tripoli is very strategic very significant from here. after his forces had a central command over the past year and from here russian military experts are armed with him arace and egyptian military experts who have been supporting have to they run the battles on the battles in southern tripoli from the sets in central command and the city of to whom from ted who now have to his forces received
6:23 pm
ministry enforcement reinforcements and also military supplies over the past year. concini is a senior libyan analyst at the international crisis group joins me now live from rome good to have you with us on the program swift capture of to who knows are we seeing sort of a route or a calculated withdrawal from have to sort of giving the illusion that d.n.a. forces a stronger and better equipped for this battle well certainly after is mouthpieces continue to portray this as a tactical withdrawal but there's no doubt that various factors have contributed to this withdrawal the hole that withdrawal of russian troops and their private mercenaries that have been helping out over the past weeks we saw them pull out of tripoli and other areas about 10 days ago so this was already a setback perhaps their forces recent imports of weaponry brought in by terry key to help with the d.n.a. and actually it doesn't seem that the battle is terrible and that was
6:24 pm
a battle there was no real fighting so we assume that it was a withdrawal not so tactical but actually a retreat because they couldn't sustain the potential offensive threat that could have ensued had they tried to keep up resistance there's also the possible variable of an under the table deal between the foreign sponsors of the 2 sides they will jump into all of those issues in a moment let's just talk about have to us forces now because of the you just mentioned the the wagner organization backed up by by russia now some confusion as to whether they were airlifted out of the country or they were airlifted perhaps a few days ago a week or so ago to other parts of libya in your analysis and from your contacts and your knowledge where do you think those fighters of those fighters left the country and therefore have to really is on his own. it's hard to know the truth my working assumption on where they are on the whereabouts of the button our forces at the moment is that they might have been brought. east either to their job for
6:25 pm
a airbase or to benghazi which is the stronghold of whether they've been airlifted out or not i'm not aware of them being pulled out of the country i'm assuming there is still in there in the strongholds and in other parts of libya i'm sure turkey no obviously has played a crucial role you've touched a lot as well in helping really g.n.a.t. forces in the un backed government in tripoli get where they are getting we can expect a counter offensive from herft where would it come from would it come from the east or would it come from the south. again i think we there's a lot of uncertainty on what will happen next. week what we've registered over the past months increasing dissatisfaction by have kerry's foreign backers about the conduct of the war and about his own personal conduct you know morality that also
6:26 pm
egyptian diplomats have been voicing this in in private conversations so i think that what they're trying to achieve is avoid a counter offensive if possible but that also depends on what the g.n.a.t. the trip that he based for instance and allied with with the g.n.a.t. do meaning if they start their hearts of success and their military victories at tara who now and do not venture further east then we could see a freezing of the conflict or at least you know cease fire talks proceeding but if g.m.a. forces and politicians call for a continued offensive towards syria it jus for or even further east on the oil terminals then at that point i think there is foreign backers might recalculate once again and go for a good counter offensive we'll see what happens certainly in the coming days we are getting news actually from the u.n. that supposedly ceasefire talks are underway i was under the luci there and certain
6:27 pm
questions in geneva for the moment though to you claudia get seanie thanks very much for your time from rome thank you. the health ministry has confirmed almost 3619 infections in the last 24 hours it's the highest long day totals seen since the outbreak began and president hassan rouhani has warned strict control measures will have to be reimposed if social distancing isn't respected. in the capital. it's been a worrying week for many iranians the number of daily coronavirus infections is back at record levels not seen since march doctors say the threat of a 2nd wave of covert 19 is very real but yes dead will be a 2nd if personal hygiene is not opposite he may again face sharp care people are careful to some extent but it's better if they care more with smaller crowds and more caution wheeling. globally the corona virus is spreading faster than ever
6:28 pm
last week johns hopkins university recorded the highest infection rates so far in iran work over 1000 infections were waning after the lockdown there again increasing in at least 10 out of 31 provinces control measures on public life last month something health ministry officials warned might make people complacent infection fears seem to have become less of a concern for some and intercity travel during holidays and weekends is on the rise again iran's president says that people should learn to adapt and live with the virus not bend or ignore social distancing rules. people and businesses must seriously take into consideration warnings and precautionary measures by officials about the resurgence of the disease the noble people of iran should know if these measures are not taken seriously anywhere in the country or god forbid the disease rises again or thorough will be forced to bring back some restrictions and that
6:29 pm
would affect the normal life of citizens and badly harm the economy for people running shops that opened only a few weeks ago and are still recovering losses from the 1st lock down the prospect of a 2nd one is unthinkable. some say threatening another lock down shows the government is out of touch with the people. president rouhani is living on easy street he is not thinking about us the young the iranians i'm 32 and i have nothing of my own no car no flat not even a simple motorbike some money to start a small business they live on easy street they give orders and we have to say ok others say if the government wants people to stay at home they should compensate them as has been done in other countries. and so the money if they pay the expenses of people like me returned to us and even these traders for 2 to 3 months then they can say shut down your businesses is not difficult it's easy but when people find
6:30 pm
money to be. talking to iranians about a 2nd wave of the virus the response is always the same god forbid but even as they carry on with their lives health experts say it's not if a 2nd wave is coming but when. as are all deals with a possible 2nd wave thailand is touting its cells as the trusted destination for tourists with 40000000 visitors tourism is often referred to as the engine driving the country's economy but with the state of global travel in the time of the pandemic that engine is running on empty as well. thailand's natural beauty and luxury resorts draw visitors from all over the world and from all walks of life at least it did before covert 19 its hotels and beaches now sit empty the global shutdown has exposed the country's huge economic reliance on the travel industry one that will never be the same after the pandemic and wooing back foreign tourists
6:31 pm
is not going to be easy but the government has a plan. it's growing the marketing message beyond amazing thailand it's now focused on driving home the idea that the country is one of the safest and cleanest places to visit and launched a health and safety certification program for travel companies or tourists want to know now yes how beautiful the destination is but also is it safe to go there i think safety will be the main concern and if we can give them confidence and have a good stand it it won't be hard to win back the tourists the certification program covers a wide range of cleaning procedures and regulations on how to protect staff and the public the thai hotel group on tara has already received certification for one of its bangkok properties at its beach resort in who when they see the certificate as an important credential to have but it's what happens after that's critical. execution of the standards is key. in terms of the manuals and the
6:32 pm
process and the standards that's all very well but it's the day to day interaction and delivery from the people that will make the difference. despite having the 1st case of covert $900.00 outside of china thailand has maintained low infection rates and quickly flattened its curve community cooperation and containment measures worked the government now wants to capitalize on that as it calculates reopening bangkok superdome airport here is the country's biggest and busiest over 80 percent of the $65000000.00 passengers last year were international but now it's been reduced to just a trickle of domestic and repatriation flights it's going to stay that way at least until the end of june when the international arrivals ban is lifted it was put in place back in early april with millions of jobs on the line thailand needs to see it airports busy again but it will be a slow and steady opening if there is any increase in covert $1000.00 cases any progress in building travelers confidence could come crashing down scott harder
6:33 pm
al-jazeera banks are not thailand is among a number of asian countries looking to open its doors for tourists again another part of the world including europe are also keen to entice visitors for the summer holidays in a stroll the own battered economies but it's country's a down to living with the virus to restart their economies the virus is still taking a toll it's infected well over 6 and a half 1000000 people and contributed to the deaths of more than 390008 report by the new york times certainly number of cases worldwide has multiplying at its fastest pace yet hitting its peak on may the 30th when more than 134000 cases were recorded in a single day. dr mohammad mini it is of their all a just and health policy specialist at lancaster university in england and joins me now from lancaster kentucky with us on the program i mean it's a fine and delicate balancing act to sort of ease restrictions keep quiet while
6:34 pm
exposure to a minimum as well as sort of keeping the medical community and the public on side depending on which country you're in it's absolutely i think this is really crucial stuff at this moment especially because when we know that more 'd than 80 to 90 percent of people are still an infected and they don't have and the like and so any change in the sort of the new year we're certainly going to build them and the chances for the virus doing are to it's probably really high and so at the moment i know that the level of frustration and really we can do that no but really we are not yet at that stage at the school we all the work at the moment is opinion that many medics have i mean the w.h.o. is warning of a 2nd wave some like yourself are suggesting that some nations haven't even passed the 1st wave if we take a look at maybe brazil even the u.s. and parts of africa yes absolutely i mean especially talking about the united states they are very different than other more lachlan but a longer duration that it's more than concerned that if they are starting to open
6:35 pm
for 'd it we'll be looking to the point where they will be in that situation. it would just for longer be ration and that's why we have the why people why this assistance from all the time in the population we have to live with this one's for we in the long talk how problematic is it then to take the decision for politicians certainly to sort of ease the restrictions and get businesses moving again in countries as diverse as thailand turkey and germany when spikes in 19 i'm not only happened but there's a real worry they will happen again and we have seen that in china and in south korea as well. absolutely i know that it is not an easy decision for any government fake news to stop because this isn't something you're going to actually looking across i mean on the public health and the mountainous of the livelihoods but at the same time important thing is that everything that should for emphasis on the but i think the infrastructure while the 1st wave is going down and that is what
6:36 pm
has been lacking in many things it's for example if we take example nothing. they may have been very good in the beginning to really put it down but they didn't really no infrastructure so that they will be policing the law that they would be able to reach and we're going to fight for years and i saw the little of those caves and so we leave the importance of those that have enough of this for sure that once the evening of the lockdown is done we are in the position to really take the fall off or you can put as many precautions in place have as much infrastructure as you want but it is the stark reality that really we can't avoid getting the virus in some shape or form until a vaccine is found if it'll it is it totally practical sort of to live in fear self isolate and social distance full the rest of our lives it's impractical surely. yes it is certainly impractical to record a 4th when so for all the hype will 'd effectively make them the vassals but until the last seems but i think it's not become available i think the important and
6:37 pm
