based to test its are needed to monitor discrimination. and chaotic scenes in kenya police fired tear gas at mourners trying to prevent the speedy burial of a popular singer. now nearly 3 weeks after george floyd's death sparked massive demonstrations across america the police killing of another black man has triggered demonstrations anger and condemnation in the past couple of hours atlanta's police chief has resigned after video of the fatal incident emerged police say racial brooks who had fallen asleep in his car at a fast food restaurant dreiser failed a breath test and resisted arrest the officers tried using a taser on him but then a fight broke out brooks is seen taking the taser before he's fatally shot. while
3:02 am
there may be debate as to whether this was an appropriate use of deadly force i firmly believe that there is a clear distinction between what you can do and what you should do i do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force and have called for the immediate term a nation of the officer. correspondent on the gallagher has moved from miami. well we know that the police were called on friday night to a fast food restaurant after reports a customer was asleep in his car causing other customers to drive around it now when those 2 police officers arrived on the scene they carried out a sobriety test on racial brooks and said that he failed the test then you can see the video there is a struggle between racial brooks and these 2 police officers punches are thrown by mr brooks he then reportedly grabs one of the officers taser weapons and runs away with it and it's alleged that he then turned on one of the officers who opened fire
3:03 am
i've watched up video now we're all seeing it i've heard at least 3 shots and racial brock's later died in hospital now the question here is what would the police have done it for a shot brooks was not an african-american what would they have done if it was any other situation in which they did not have to use deadly force now the chief of police of atlanta erica shields has offered her resignation the mayor of atlanta accepted protests are continuing they're not baiting and i think this latest incident in which you hear the mare of a major city in this country saying that was an excessive use of deadly force will just fuel what is a long burning fire the timing of this really couldn't be worse for the people arguing against police reform because that is the major call of protests around the nation well that's nothing to marry she's co-director of the new ground and also occurs founder of black lives in atlanta she joins us rising from there mary thanks
3:04 am
for being with us police chief eric was quick to add charging those 6 police officers when they used excessive force against 2 black students and their vehicle a couple of weeks ago and now she's resigned over there how do you feel about her departure. you know i think that when one carries the way oh what is being asked of them that you will see people begin to i think this is going to be a wave. of police and sheriffs and different ones and police chiefs who will begin resigning because you know we're we're asking for calm ability we're demanding and we want that accountability shown to the funding of police and so this is no surprise. mary mary. acted very rapidly but she's also potentially attracting some of her own higher political aspirations do you regard what's happened here is the success of the movement or is
3:05 am
this potentially about politics and such a highly charged climate and also an election year. yeah well i think it's a combination of both i think that we have gotten to this place in this country where we're seeing the walls of policing come out in many ways we're seeing police departments being their budgets being cut love sandals being a great example we're seeing. schools and no longer want police in there and they're in their schools and so i think this is because of you know years and years of work organizers and movement that have called for this for very long and you know kesha is not any member of this not in an electoral season right now and so you know obviously she does have aspirations but unless we see real real life. changes to the police budget then you know we're going to continue to grapple and shovel with her around where she's actually yet because you know it's it's far too
3:06 am
long and too many people have used black people black people suffering to advance their political careers and this is a moment where that's not on the line for her right now in a few years perhaps but right now she has already and she has the power to actually make those concrete changes by literally be funding the police and investing in our laws and natural we see as it would and that's what we want for bottom the everyone else who has the decision making power right now let me ask you more about that mary because we've now already seen democrats press for these wide ranging police reform laws and new ones already rolling out a new york state what do you think needs to happen specifically in atlanta where would you like to see that money go. yeah well i think that us history will show us and tell us that when we saw the ramping up the war on drugs and mass incarceration in the eighty's and ninety's that you know we saw public school
3:07 am
budgets being slashed we saw the social safety net continue to be slashed and so we need to see investments that said she want to clean up the mess that the war on drugs have made in our communities we need to see those investments be made and jobs and housing i mean in atlanta you literally walk around and see people in tents sleeping on the street and that makes no sense to me when police heartful institution is given so much money but we felt invested in the livelihoods and wellbeing of our people and we also want to see an investment and making sure that people are ok during the cold and we need cancellations we need to make sure that folks have access to medical medical care and so those are some of the the many ways in which this money can be best well we've obviously had president trump pushing back against the funding the police and he says the place must be compassionate but also dominate the streets what do you make of those comments.
3:08 am
well they've been dominating the streets for a very long time and unless that mentality that leads and outside or should be dominating our communities that change we're going to continue to see more of our people get killed and how experience police violence and state violence in our community and so with that mindset it is no surprise then that he would say something like that because that's how white supremacy thinks and operates its own nomination that you know stems from colonisation and so you know we're in a time right now where the ordinary just won't do and every day people are sick of police dominating our communities and what we don't need is dominating our communities we need community control over our communities and we need governance far on people in our own communities that have the real solution so how we address intercommunal beilenson how did that happen and that cannot happen with the outside
3:09 am
force that's coming into dominate mary a co-founder of black lives nasa and atlanta great to get your insights on out of there thanks for joining us mary thank you so much for having. well protesters have gathered near the white house for the 16th consecutive day now of demonstrations in the u.s. capitol they marched down washington d.c. is a black lives about the plaza demanding an end to racial injustice and police brutality and in seattle protesters have maintained control of a 6 block area of the city now dubbed the capitol hill autonomous zone police have pulled out of that area and demonstrations there have been largely peaceful but president obama has threatened to use troops to push the demonstrators out of that area well meanwhile a statue of confederate president jefferson davis has been removed from the state capitol building in kentucky it's historical commission agreed to remove the monument in response to waves of protest against racial injustice states including kentucky attempted to break away from the u.s.

resisted arrest but after the video surfaced a senior official made an abrupt about face earlier this week i made the statement that i did not believe there was systemic racism within the r.c.m.p. or canadian policing. i expressed my belief that racism is found in all aspects of our society in our institutions and in our police services. adam is an outspoken indigenous leader known internationally for his work against oil sands projects near his community but while his fame has focused public attention on discrimination and abuse of people of indigenous descent his experiences are all too common and bitterness people make up less than 5 percent of canada's population but they account for around a 3rd of the prison population and 30 percent of death in police custody the question is now what authorities will do about a system that many here say is racist david mercer al-jazeera in calgary canada.
