anger among help workers in peru about a mark of protective gear as the nation records the 7 highest number of covert 90 cases in the world. there are reports china's top decision making body has passed a draft of a security bill for hong kong the controversial legislation was announced in may and sponsor weeks of protests in hong kong it's been widely criticized amid fears it will curb freedoms in hong kong something that authorizes have dismissed. and we have correspondents in beijing and hong kong on the story adrian brown will be with us in just a moment but 1st let's go to try to you who is in the chinese capital catrina run us through china's motions here and what the next steps are. hi kim well it seems that they doing is essentially taking matters into its own hands chinese government leaders have been increasingly frustrated and embarrassed

by these protests which have rocked hong kong since last june these anti-government pro-democracy protests but according to beijing they believe that these protests have been fueled by people intent on splitting hong kong from mainland china and they also say that these protests are a threat to hong kong stability and prosperity but critics would say that beijing is simply trying to silence voices that are increasingly glowered in terms of their criticism against the chinese government so today on china's national people's congress its standing committee reviewed this draft registration legislation of this national security law and basically what they're doing is that they're passing this law in order to make a change to the hong kong's mini constitution its basic war passing it in a way that bypasses hong kong's usual legislative voices legislative process and bypassing those usual critical voices as well now according to state media the

standing committee here in beijing diff discussed and defined for different crimes under that national security law all those crimes were suppressed active separatist activity state subversion terrorist activity and collusion with foreign forces they also reportedly defined punishments for those 4 crimes don't we yet to hear any details of this but once this is what this comes to light more critics expect that really what it means is hong kong is one step closer to looking and feeling more like just any chinese mainland province where any criticism of the government is censored or severely punished now we know that china that g 7 leaders came out with a statement criticizing this move asking beijing to step back from this because it will road hong kong's fundamental rights but they do as foreign minister hit back at that statement saying that they oppose and poor's this move saying that this is a national security and internal affairs issue then that they will go forward with

this and certainly it looks like beijing is not going to pull back from the store anytime soon. thank you for that katrina you're live from beijing let's get the other side now and go to adrian brown who joins us from hong kong adrian the tabling and reported in the passing of this draft law does it clear up any of the uncertainties in hong kong around what exactly this will mean. well kim i think people here in hong kong feel that the devil really years in the detail and we just don't have enough details about this new security law for instance we don't know what china's definition for sedition. foreign interference these things haven't been explained because of that lack of detail we've had plenty of speculation here about what the law is going to mean of chinese officials continue to put out soothing messages that this law will only really target a narrow group of crimes but people here really are beginning to fear the worst

particularly journalists there is a survey out today by the main association representing journalists in hong kong overwhelmingly 87 percent of them said they now felt that the press freedom was endangered some saying they were preparing to in fact quick to perfect their profession altogether because they were so worried about what the weeks months and years ahead would now involve as katrina mentioned the g. 7 foreign ministers have come out and called on china to rethink their security law pointing out that this is a breach not just of hong kong's basic law the law of hong kong but also of the agreement that china signed with britain before the handover in 1970 a legally binding document that is now lodged with the united nations but china is intended seems on asserting its authority in hong kong and it has defied the growing calls of the international community to drop this law as i've been finding

out it's not just journalists who are worried about what about what now lies ahead . you find it of a busy street up a narrow staircase where walls are 1st student with stickers advocating hong kong separatism and mocking china's leaders the building is home to a bookstore specializing in literature sympathetic to hong kong's protest movement and that the only concedes makes him a potential target for china's new security law something pops especially the us are there were folks there were tight toes on safra to some on the whole kit and ins that we sell so these might be things that got us in trouble some time later he has reason to worry in 2015 another hong kong bookseller disappeared into chinese custody for 6 months following a visit to the mainland the clock is ticking for the imposition of a law that journalists say could severely restrict freedom of speech in shrines in

the deal that britain and china did before the handover in 1997 so we're concerned over many questions as to whether we can interview a parent advocate you know film people calling for an end to one part party rule or criticising the government but beyond that we're concerned that we won't get on to the top of these questions and this law is going to be vaguely worded broadly applied in the same way that it is in the mainland to stifle dissent. not so say china's leaders they insist the new law will only target a minority of what are termed troublemakers who threaten china's national security . but in a sign of what may be to come 15 veteran pro-democracy figures have gone on trial accused of taking part in an illegal assembly they include albert ho who says he's prepared for jail we have to risk my safety. liberty that is something i'm prepared

for but i won't give it up the new security law could be in place by july the 1st the 23rd anniversary of hong kong's return to chinese rule the timing of this new law comes ahead of elections which are due in september critics say it creates the conditions for china's leaders to disqualify candidates who they consider disloyal or a threat to national security adrian brown al jazeera hong kong. for accusations u.s. president donald trump told china's leader that he approved of beijing's repression of muslim weak is and other minorities excerpts from a yet to be released book by the former national security advisor john bolton so trump agreed with china while publicly condemning the mass detentions those allegations come as trump signed into law an ax that calls for sanctions against chinese officials who are involved united nations says up to a 1000000

washington strategy group he says it's yet another example of the president using his office for personal gain. well these revelations are damning and it clearly shows the president trump sold us out for his own personal political gain he made requests of china for example about their requesting that they interfere in our democratic elections to help him win in order for him to to safely stay in the presidency asking for a foreign power to help one be the american president is deeply problematic and that is why he got impeached so these are damning revelations they're not surprising for those of us who have been arguing for years that donald trump is corrupting the presidency and it is disappointing that john bolton is only putting these on the book now president having taken a principled stand when he could have done something about it and that's what the president's men do and that's what we've seen them do throughout its presidency
12:15 pm
when they leave suddenly they find courage like general mattis finding courage to speak out about donald trump's failure to address racism in this country and worse so it's a real problem to see this administration continually deny that the president is engaged in illegal behavior with foreign governments to help him win politically and where there's smoke there's fire so lighthouses argument really doesn't stand much chance and john bolton's got the records i think to prove it. still ahead here on al-jazeera why there are concerns that lebanon's economic crisis could be made worse by u.s. move targeting syria's government. on a back seat to the black people and america. and the father of george floyd makes a plea to the u.n. human rights council as a police officer is charged another african american death in custody.
