separatists seize the main security building. and calls to boycott chinese products in india after the deadly border class but nationalist rhetoric is running up against economic reality. and on people seem to the school including concerns for the safety of football players global players union fees pro is consumed the teams are playing too many games too quickly as the school looks to make up for time lost to coronavirus. now china is rejecting accusations of hostage diplomacy after a charge 2 canadians with spying a businessman and a former diplomat were detained in late 2018 and what's being seen as retaliation for canada's arrest of a top executive of the chinese tech giant qual way at the behest of the united states alexia brian has. these are the men at the center of

a case that's left relations between china and canada at their lowest in decades. michael spader a businessman promoting links to north korea who helped set up a high profile visit to pyongyang by former basketball star dennis rodman. has something at stake and michael covert a former diplomat who works for the ngo the international crisis group a role that saw him appear on this channel's program inside story the i.c.j. says cobra is an unfortunate porn and a larger struggle because more than $550.00 days after their wrists both men have been charged with espionage. and the indictment charged michael coverage of secretively gathering state secrets and intelligence for overseas organizations with particularly serious circumstances the facts are clear and the evidence solid and sufficient. details of the evidence against either men were not revealed but
6:03 pm
they've both been called victims of hostage diplomacy because they detained shin and 2018 came just 9 days after the arrest of monk one jo in canada she's a top executive a chinese telco giant weiwei and wanted by u.s. authorities over alleged violations of sanctions against iran just last month the canadian court ruled the extradition case can proceed analysts say there's little doubt the 2 cases are connected and you're chinese was a successful in preventing a monk from being sent to the united states to face trial i think it will michael's will probably be we some ways will be found to do so but you. would to be sent to the united states to face trial and it will canadians who simply be punished for the acts over the canadian coach munger's out on bail and living under house arrest in one of her mansions in vancouver supporters of the

so-called to michael say they haven't been allowed visits by lawyers no loved ones and meetings with consular officials have been put on hold because of the corona virus pandemic canada has repeatedly appealed for the men to be freed the economies and democracies of the west are united in our condemnation of these arbitrary detentions the 2 michaels face life in prison if convicted brian al-jazeera. now a strain is intelligence agencies believe the country is facing unprecedented cyber attacks from an unnamed government prime minister scott morrison wouldn't be drawn on whether they're part of a strain is increasingly hostile dispute with china and beijing has denied being involved like it has moved from canberra. after a warning from its jolly spy agencies prime minister scott morrison addressed the nation based on advice provided to me by now cyber experts astray and organizations
6:05 pm
are currently being targeted by sophisticated state by state saw the act of sophisticated continuing and widespread targeting everything from all levels of government and political organizations to health education and critical infrastructure the government says cyber experts identified it as a state by stop because of the technique and scale of the attack you could describe it as malicious and that is why now. when its leaders need to be right but morrison reassured saying they didn't appear to be any large scale breaches of people's posts no information it's a form of ice maciek warfare. information wolf and the. scouts ran the usual declarations of hostilities and the identification of who's doing the

attack and a lot of it is about denials cyber attacks but the government says they are increasing in frequency and scale it won't say which state it believes was behind the attack but it comes at a time of heightened tensions between its trailer and beijing. since is generally a cold for an independent inquiry into the current of ours pandemic china has imposed tariffs on bali hole to debate in ports and also warns chinese students against studying in. well the government has been careful not to point the finger at beijing publicly it's the country most widely speculated by intelligence experts to be behind the cyber attack and one of the few states along with russia iran and north korea which would be capable of carrying out such an attack but whoever is to blame the government is businesses to strengthen their technical defenses as the
6:07 pm
attacks increase nicola gage 0 camera returning now to our top story the diplomatic standoff between canada and china with 2 canadians charged by china with spying let's get more from david massa he's live for us in calgary david the chinese haven't been explicit about retaliation here but it's clearly implied what are we hearing from the canadians. well that's right i mean this is the diplomatic spat is certainly costing canadians a fair amount so far just in terms of trade deals a couple $1000000000.00 worth of agricultural exports from canada have been halted because of this political and the prime minister trudeau has been very vocal has been very clear that he believes that this is political retaliation for canada's arrest of one joe we're expected to hear from him again and here to hear for their words about what canada steps the candidate is going to take now the 2 canadians
6:08 pm
that have now had the charges read against them and they have not been allowed any kind of consular assistance either and so you know canadian officials haven't been able to get in to talk to them just to find out exactly what the conditions are like and to find out ways in which they can they can help these gentlemen personally we're expecting that that's going to change as the virus restrictions in china are to be lifted so you know this is a really difficult situation for the family members of these 2 men and for canadian diplomats trying to see how they can find a way out of this this issue right now we do expect to be hearing from just entered a very very shortly will be across that and speaking to david again soon but for now thank you very much. now a legal battle over a former national security adviser john bolton's damning account of donald trump is now in a federal court the justice department has asked for a temporary restraining order to block its release bolton is asking the court to
6:09 pm
dismiss the case the top democrat and congress nancy pelosi says allegations in the book prove that donald trump is unfit to stat out and special reports from washington d.c. . from the white house a mixed reaction to the impending release of the john bolton book from the president a tweet bolton's book which is getting terrible reviews is a compilation of lies and made up stories all intended to make me look but from his press secretary a different approach the book is full of classified information. a misguided hawk on foreign policy and a weak government author this is despicable that he chose to publish this book without fully going through the review process chromos top treated visor a personal attack by the it's the washington swamps equivalent of revenge he got fired because he did not obey the chain of command because his views were totally out of sync with the president down jay trump with respect to how to how to handle
6:10 pm
international fairs john bolton's been working on the book for months the president's long serving handpicked national security adviser was present during key moments of the trump presidency the summit with north korea and singapore the meeting with russian president vladimir putin in finland g 7 g 20 and nato gatherings around the world bolton says trump is easily flattered by authoritarian leaders who try to manipulate him and america's strategic interests are less important than winning reelection in a longer interview to iran american t.v. this weekend he says donald trump isn't fit to be president i don't think he's fit for office i don't think he has the competence to carry out the job there really isn't any guiding principle that i was able to discern other than what's good for donald trump's reelection bolton was called to give evidence from congress held impeachment hearings but donald trump he took legal steps to avoid doing that the democratic leader of the house of representatives says he's no hero telling his
6:11 pm
stories no president trump is clearly ethically unfit and to lecture unprepared to be the president of the united states that doesn't seem to matter to the republicans and the united states senate didn't seem to matter to john bolton he chose royalty over lot over patriotism. the trump administration is taking legal action to stop publication of the book which is due to hit the shelves on tuesday but there are many copies already in circulation and it's rare for the court to issue such injunctions in the next few weeks another book on trump is expected to be published it's written by his niece who is also a psychologist and it's expected also to be highly critical of the president's. well let's now speak to allen who is at the white house for us and bolton's book a time in front of plenty of cheerful stories so no surprise then that the trumpet
6:12 pm
ministration is fighting back. exactly and you hear it from people like my pompeo who is the secretary of state and the series of tweets this morning calling john bolton someone who publishes lies and even goes as far as to call him a traitor this is pretty strong stuff but it's a pattern that we've seen before when people leave the trump administration under a cloud they tend to be attacked on twitter by the president and those around him the only senior person i can think of who has left and there hasn't been a significant problem was nikki haley who is the u.n. ambassador sheehan fight left with a handshake in the oval office and donald trump's grateful thanks something i'm sure she'll put in the bank when it comes to considering running for president in 4 years time yes the trumpet ministration is going to go to court that hearing is due to take place in about 2 hours time the trumpet ministration through the department of justice is going to argue that the book has
6:13 pm
a number of classified paragraphs which contain information which should not be out in the public at the problem that they have got is that the president didn't say that what he said is the book is full of lies the other problem they've got is the book is out there the media have it extracts have been published people have copies of i have a digital copy of copies circulating here and many many many thousands of copies have hit the bookstores in the u.s. and beyond ready for the publication date on tuesday so it is very difficult for the court to argue to the they've ministration to argue to the court that this needs to be stopped john bolton well he is opposing it obviously it's the actions against him rather than against the publisher john. he says donald trump doesn't want to stop sword and governments reading his books the problem he's got such is the american people reading sultans book alan as you've been saying says that time
6:14 pm
has been saying this book is pure fiction but then at the same time and this thing it's full of these national security secrets i believe that john bolton did go through some kind of error of the year process what happened with that. he is well this is been ongoing since january he submitted is transcripts to go through the normal process when it is vetted by several agencies in the government he was told to remove a number of its passages there's one part in the book when he's talking about the meeting in singapore with kim jong un he said i would like to tell you what the president said here but the government's process says that i must remove that the magazine vanity fair said they have a copy of what was said in the sense that says that donald trump is pleading with the chinese to help him win reelection in 2020 which of course would be an offense in the suggestion is that the government wanted that removed not because it
6:15 pm
betrayed any secrets but because it was politically embarrassing to donald trump and so this process has been ongoing clearly the book was due to be published back in march john bolton is obviously fed up with the process he says it has been completed the government says it hasn't that is the argument that will be bashed out in court but the books out there all of them in the i mean i've been through the book almost all of it and all the main details are the things that we have been talking about or here in al-jazeera for the last 24 hours and also you may have read in some of the newspaper extracts that have been published over the last 2436 hours alan fischer that for us at the white house will obviously be across that court reading when it happens thanks very much our. now the u.s. is marking the end of slavery today on a day known as juneteenth and it's taken on added significance this year with the recent protests against racism and police brutality there on june 19th 865 an order
6:16 pm
was issued to free thousands of slaves in the state of texas now slavery had already been abolished for more than 2 years but there weren't enough soldiers to enforce the new law and many whites in the confederate south kept the news from their slaves and now there are growing calls in the u.s. to make juneteenth a national holiday well let's bring in gabriel is under now he's at a protest in new york this is a day usually marked by african-americans but this year it seems it's being observed by an unprecedented number of americans is this a turning point. it certainly is this is one of the 1st. in new york right now there are more than $41.00 here in the city and the surrounding areas of metropolitan new york and we can you step up to the strike per 2nd it looks like the people power suit and you can get a sense of the crowd these protests. want to go 1st to
6:17 pm
protests in new york city today and you'll notice a lot of the crowd similar faces you'll notice white pieces as well and that's what's really been so on 1st a bit about so many of these protests that we have seen in new york and throughout the u.s. for the last several weeks of course you're seeing lots of. parking americans. but this is really. great community as well and see this protest right here so really really. this is one of. dozens of protests that are planned for here in new york city as the day goes on and what's really become an unprecedented and historic time in the u.s. gave the protests that we've been seeing over the. last few weeks they began about police reform but have become much more about systemic racism the conversation about reparations has been going for years now in the u.s. but is it now gaining more traction around events and observances such as that.
6:18 pm
it really years i mean there is a lot of this story of these protests in the us in new york more than 3 weeks ago it was about justice a new show week for george noory but as this one or the longer that it went on it became much more than that as we see it's about black lives matter it's about a restricted form which we've seen it used to work of her out of police forces wrote a very good state say that they are going to reform including here in new york city and that it's also become all about education housing right so it's really taken on a life of its own if you ask anybody and they always tell you this story about george noory but it's become so her child we're going to now it's really about the whole history things now and that's what really is very. sort of stricken so many
6:19 pm
well. ok but i was on the line for us on the streets of new york will be bringing you all the latest from there throughout the day thanks very much gary. well president donald trump was planning to have his 1st campaign rally in months on june 18th today but then postponed it to saturday after a backlash and he's now tweeted a warning ahead of the rallies saying any protesters or in his words lowlifes who are going to oklahoma should understand they'll be treated differently to those in new york seattle and minneapolis. well the un's human rights council is now launching an inquiry into systemic racism against black people following the police killing of george floyd last month the member states unanimously adopted the resolution put forward by a group of african countries the un's rights chief michel bashfully has one year to report back on her findings an initial draft of the writ of the resolution called for an investigation specifically in the u.s. but that's now been taken out following closed door negotiations. well
6:20 pm
let's now take you live to also at the canadian capital where prime minister justin trudeau speaking that's where you're going to want to be thought out what's going on because. for the very beginning we have highlighted that there is an independent judicial system in the case of another man underway in canada and that we will not and must not and cannot interfere in the independence of our judiciary in this country the chinese authorities have directly linked the case of the 2 michaels to the judicial proceedings against ms money which is extremely disappointing because for us it is not there obviously are no links except in politics on those who continue to.
6:21 pm
ask the chinese and put pressure on the chinese government to cease the arbitrary detention of these 2 canadian citizens who are being held for no other reason than they are the chinese government is disappointed with the independent proceedings of the additionally we will continue to stand strong and firmly the return of the to myself or mr tom heard c.d.c. on his or her i want to be clear so are you saying that you knew prior to the last election about the allegations against him and if you did why did you all are trying to explain whenever there are allegations against members of the liberal party part of the process is for the leader 'd to be informed of the same time process that a case in is he really well we've just been listening there to canadian prime minister justin trudeau addressing the ongoing the tension of 2 canadian men in
6:22 pm
china who have now been charged with espionage insisting that the proceedings against tall executive men longto in canada are part of an independent judicial system i will be staying across that story for you here on out of there. has plenty more ahead for you this news hour including ramping up the pressure on the president demonstrators in mali gather for the 2nd time now in a month. mass testing and rapid action china says it's learned the lessons from to stamp out a new coronavirus outbreak in beijing. and as brazil tackles the 2nd west outbreak coronavirus football returns to the pitch just meters away from a field hospital for patients that's coming up with pizza. now the nigerian military says it's killed several high ranking boko haram lead as in a series of s. strikes on
6:23 pm
a village in the northeast the settlements was reportedly being used as a training ground for feiss dress has more from a breach or. the strikes were carried out over the course of 2 days after days of surveillance according to the military and then they were sure that several leaders of boko haram fighters who were there at the compound when it was struck as well as several fighters were also using the surrounding training ground in the community or the villages on the fringes of the somebody so for us to know what's interesting by the way this information was released by the nigerian military on the day the nigerian president met with all heads of security agencies from the army navy air force the police and the intelligence agencies where he was quoted as saying he was not happy with the way the security operations in the country were going to remember the not only the book on fight in the northeast of the country but also
6:24 pm
the banditry attacks in the northwest of the country where in the last 2 months hundreds of people have been killed now the military said they were sure that they have gotten very value very high value target as they put it in that compound and that the information they got after the attacks were completely completed was that several of such leaders have been killed now former allies and yemen's war battling to control an island off the horn of africa for the separatists have stormed the security department building in the city of how people on the island of. the southern transitional council is backed by the u.a.e. and is fighting government forces supported by saudi arabia now the s.t.c. had originally supported the saudi u.a.e. coalition against truth you rebels but now wants to break away from more than yemen yemeni minister has called on the coalition to end the fighting and to restore order on the island. and the last of 3 aid shipments has arrived in yemen as the
6:25 pm
u.n. suffers a funding crisis there more than 40 tons of medical equipment including ventilators and testing kits have been flown in to help the country battle the coronavirus earlier this month a u.n. appeal fell $1000000000.00 short of what was needed forcing 75 percent of its programs to be cut in yemen well let's now bring in catherine schachter from london she's the director of the yemen unit at the next century foundation that's a think tank that operates in conflict zones catherine we're now seeing this resurgence of fighting and i recall there was a deescalation agreement psion about 6 weeks ago that why is that for on a part that. i think one of the main reason and i'm is that number one we have a new client that vacuum i want you to. and i think that it led to a lot of. anxiety political exile in particular in the u.a.e.
6:26 pm
in the sound of the relief valve that once again they were going to be. in the stands. always supported more or less the mushroom out approach and i think that it was that it was a real fear there that you would try to increase the excitement to the south in problem since of yemen and try to open not you know and use one i've been through and if you will and i think that the u.a.e. reacted to that and this is what is happening now in secret trouble and we need to remember about as far as the u.a.e. is concerned the whole intervention in yemen anyway i was always about having control of the which you raise in yemen so in the south and making sure that for example so quick how would not fool we've been someone else's jurisdiction or spies they are concerned that it was a matter of. national security so i think that the fact now is that we see around not in your hands it's a very tall tale sign to me that there is
6:27 pm
a lot of anxiety like that and you must see t 2 which is tricky and that potentially we seeing new cracks appearing in terms of the question and mary kind of. chanda's that underpins the very very tentative lines and the thing is we going now i mean the the years are passing by nothing is being results so everything that you going to see you're going to see a lot of cracks out of people we have very different times as and this is what is happening on the ground. it's quite sad to see that the yemenis you sure are paying the price because because they're not really being not what it is that the wants and i think that's the main issue here is that the yemeni are not included in the process of conflict resolution and what the what is happening is that the suffering the brunt of international intervention and we've got much consultation and catherine you speak about these cracks i mean as we see these escalating tensions between these various factions and the foreign backers here where does this leave
6:28 pm
the broader conflict mean both of those previously on the same side now fighting each other does that make resolution of the conflict with the whose these friends stance more likely. not necessarily i think we need to be very careful here so even though it appears that in the style of the helium the saudis for example have that doesn't mean that the enemy it just means they have very different views in how we should go about appeasing the south and having control of south yemen. it is i would not equate the 2 you know it's possible the lines fit the difference you possibly. make resolution that you say i think that the iraqis in this i would feel very much on the same side as far as their position towards there is and it's not going to change they are likely to change anytime soon i think that we need to to look you know she had been in south yemen very differently i think that we need to have 2 types of conflict resolution before we could even think about bringing the 2 together and trying to find a great series addition to the whole of yemen i think you would be foolish to think
6:29 pm
that we could go back into time where yemen was a whole and i think that the factor we are facing to yemen and so we need to you know we need to deal with the situation on the ground there's no much point grandstanding on sufferance you when you factor in the country has been to fight it and it's all creating. these divide and so i think that what we need to see is really take south yemen and try to solve these problems out 1st because it is a lot it's these greatest ability in the south and in the west and then we need to approach north very differently and again because of geopolitics the arabs often have the same attention towards the north and it. worries about the north and saudi arabia for example is how do you share a border with. their interests that. is more important for example so we need to look at all these different things to try to find a way forward but again in my mind until we actually did find a way the yemenis want it's real pretty cool representation and that it's going to
6:30 pm
be very difficult to find a viable solution that would work. 10 years down the line and i think ultimately it's well being snatched from the international community is looking for is complete preservation but as opposed to you crashing things out per year it's you're inventing new mini shells you know. and again you know fighting with. catherine there from the next century foundation great to get your insights here on al-jazeera catherine thank you. well still ahead on al-jazeera. but i think that we are in the middle of the band season as corona virus infections in brazil approach one many and a former health minister towns out of there in the peak of a pandemic is still a long way off. and we'll tell you why one of manchester city's stop play is maybe that's coming up with more.
6:31 pm
but. how i was saying some rather lively showers pushing out the southeastern parts of a year a brace needed to still see a fair amount of cloud just in to the northwest of turkey where these dramatic scenes came from women falling into the water that is swept away by the very heavy rain in the northwest of turkey thankfully she was rescued and we are now looking at the showers coming in across northern parts of turkey that was a weather sliding into central and eastern i was as we go on through sas day south of that across the middle east it's generally dry with plenty of sunshine temperatures here and die hard around 43 celsius some places say winds have dropped lotsa lifted dust in the sand around in recent days as we go through the next couple days the winds not too bad 40 celsius here as we go through sunday similar
6:32 pm
temperatures but across the region the lower 47 still on the cards for kuwait you might cast around the southern end of the red sea chance of some showers there too just around the holidays pushing right across into the heart of africa some very very heavy rain just around cameroon pushing into southern areas of night sheria those showers they stretch right across central parts of the continent but lousy dry around the whole. international trade would you have supported having free trade with nazi germany or the japanese or china or germany controversial immigration policies that anyone who has a well founded fear of persecution should be able to comment. close to. the buffalo goes head to head with senior trump advisor stephen moore this year the trump deficit crossed a trillion dollars. not to reelect little from not about how to go on al-jazeera.

photo again i missed on the let's remind you of our top stories this hour china has filed charges of espionage against 2 canadians michael coverage and michael spot for have been held since 2018 it's seen as a retaliatory move by beijing off to canada to stay and while away executive men long go. astray as prime minister says the country is being targeted by a sophisticated cyber attack scott morrison stopped short of saying who is behind it the attack is hitting on all levels of government and essential services. u.a.e. backed separatist vises have taken control of the main security building on yemen so-called trial and fighting between government forces and the s.t.c. continues despite calls for calm. demonstrators are gathering in mali as capital bamako for the 2nd time this month ramping up pressure on president abraham to back a case to resign the protests being encouraged by opposition leader mahmoud dicko those who oppose caves accuse him of corruption and of failing to contain violent
6:35 pm
groups the president has promised to hold talks to establish a unity government when our correspondent is following developments from senegal as capital dhaka nic pressure has been mounting on the president for some time now and the opposition is looking remarkably energized just how significant is today's protest. when i said. that the west african body was sent a high delegation. to the capital bamako to try to mediate what seems to be an intensifying conflict part of this delegation we have the foreign minister of nigeria i ricos any share and the head of the commission head of echo was to try to find some sort of agreement between the 2 parties because the protest the protestors are gaining momentum now there's less people than last week partly because perhaps people couldn't afford to come to the capital bamako from the countryside and because of the security situation but still we have thousands of
6:36 pm
people on the streets of moscow protesting asking for president. to once again resign so it seems that the concessions that the president had made on tuesday raising the salaries of teachers i'm. suggesting that he would dissolve the newly elected national assembly in the constitutional court calling for a national unity government while all of that was not enough to stand now to quell the crowd of protesters and in the absence of. who is the main opposition leader currently. has been abducted a few months ago during the parliamentary elections in the absence of stimulus he said well it's the influential leader mahmoud who's leading the charge against kate and so following this high level mediation by the west african body he's conceded that he's willing to hold talks with kate as long as he fulfills his promise

necklace hack that for us following all this developments from dot com thanks very much. now turning to the corona virus pandemic and brazil is approaching 1000000 cases as infections across latin america it's now the 2nd west had country in the wild the virus has spread to every nation in the region 80000 people have died and there are fears that the real toll is actually much higher latin america editor lucy in yuma now joins us from the 2 land capital santiago you see as the cases in brazil escalate both scenarios now into his 3rd health minister you spoke to his 1st a man that he fired how is he assessing the situation now from the sidelines. well and he's clearly a sounding the alarm you say that by the end of today there will or brazil rather will have surpassed the 1000000 benchmark of infections which is the kind of
6:38 pm
a record that no country wants and i spoke to the former health minister who was dismissed by president bull so narrow precisely because the president did not agree with his calls for more stringent confinement his name is luis and we get money that the u.a.e. have heard of him and he says that the worst part of all this is course that the that the endemic it is far from envy that there is still at least 3 more months to go before they reach the peak. i think that we are in the middle of the pandemic season we have a country though it's a really a continent and we have some cities there are really went through the problems one is in the middle tide and other ones that didn't start yet so i think that we will till september. so i wonder you've worked with him so closely how much of his decisions do you think are influenced by his friend president donald trump of the
6:39 pm
united states they're very close and they're trying to to follow one too but some are followers trump. any was automatic writing next week that group said there he started saying the same thing here i don't think that he really thinks on doing the media trump thinks i'm doing that because you know. you get i'll be and i'm there won't have to discuss this new tools for the war health organization remodeler modernizing but the countries there. if the countries are not sitting on the same table to make this discussion there was there or not said there will not be able to are you so you don't think that they're going to go through with it they were not dropped has an election and the 2nd semester both sides are hesitant to go 22 so as soon as trump passes for his election no matter the result if he loses
6:40 pm
a lot of states want to do it if he wins the united states won't do it so well so now it's probably going to change his position also but right now hydroxide chloroquine is on the protocol for all brazilians who go to public hospitals with cold and 19 in a country as large as brazil how concerned how much of a concern is that i think it's a big concern because we don't know 1st we don't know if it works and the 2nd is that we don't know if it harms people. i think that. let's say the world health organization made a mess we've that big but they deal with these the people and when we leave them they do the paper because they didn't take the right measures to publish it so now we're going to have to wait but as soon as you got to a paper there would be shows that has no benefit and what i'm worried is if it shows that hearts that it breeds more problems than solutions
6:41 pm
a few. people died from a stroke or heart attack i think we're going to have maybe people suing the government for doing that. new say your currently until a when the situation just seems to be getting worse even as the government there is imposing stricter measures. yes that's right in fact of this morning it was announced that the more than 6000 new infections have been confirmed that the death toll continues to be extremely high and the government has asked the president rather has sent a bill to congress on fast track asking them to impose penalties of up to 5 years in prison for anybody who violates the quarantine and now people are already going to be allowed to go out twice a week rather than 5 times a week to do shopping or any other essential businesses that they will have to do and the problem with this is that the opposition is very unlikely to approve this
6:42 pm
