rename its fair and lovely line earlier this week it's dropping the word fair and on thursday u.s. cosmetics giant johnson and johnson said it discontinued 2 lines of products with the words fairness on its labels it's also planning to stop selling its skin whitening creams and asia and the middle east. well we're joined now by nina davuluri who is the 1st indian american to be crowned miss america and 2014 she also created a petition this month calling on the major players in the industry to stop making skin whitening products and she joins us now via skype from new york nina thank you for being with us today i know you've been campaigning on this issue for years so let me start by asking you for your reaction to what we're saying now yeah absolutely thank you so much for having me and this is an issue that i have been really advocating for 60 years now since the time that i won this america i remember the morning after i won and woke up to a headline in an indian newspaper that said it's miss america too dark to be miss
8:18 pm
india and that was the moment that everything had changed for me you know i grew up hearing comments like don't go out in the sun you're going to get too dark for oh you'd be so much more beautiful if you were a few sheets lighter and since that time i've actually been producing a documentary starting 2 years ago called complection that really into untacked this idea of colorism not only us that exists in south asia but many countries around the world and so to hear this news it's really the 1st step in moving forward to dismantle these are your sins of colorism globally or this particular set of reactions has clearly been in response to the black lives mass and ribbon and public sentiment around that that many of these products especially the unregulated ones can be incredibly toxic so does it frustrate you that when ousting a p.r. response here on a political issue rather than one that's really driven by health and safety. you
8:19 pm
know it is it is a response at the very least it started the conversation and it's opened the conversation to i think it's the end of it absolutely not and i think you're also right there are a lot of toxic chemicals that are in these ingredients but just eliminating the products doesn't solve the issue or changing the name doesn't solve the actual bigger issue that we're talking about here and that is this ideology that fair skin is considered elite that fair skin is considered the ideal is better than darker skin complection and that in itself is racism so unless these companies can and not only companies that of course the entertainment industries need niches really dismantle these ideology that they themselves have built that they are skin and it is the only type of were the skin and then we truly can't break the cycle of colors and as you say this is such a broad issue not just about production marketing of these products but really about these conceptions of beauty i do want to ask you
8:20 pm
a little more about your personal experience here because like you as a woman of color we've both been told where to dock how do we change that conversation. yeah i think it absolutely ringback this is the 1st time we're actually seeing change in that conversation and like i said this is a 1st step but you know just in filming a documentary i realized through the simple conversation that this is so deeply embedded this core believe lighter skin is the ideal is so deeply embedded in our culture in trickles down to socioeconomic class careers jobs education in our edge and so this is just one piece of a much larger conversation and puzzle i think bollywood has an incredible amount of responsibility to acknowledge that it also perpetuated the stereotype and it is an incredibly influential community that has really stood silent and that has been deafening i want to ask because i see here that even though it's changing its
8:21 pm
marketing is isn't necessarily halting production of their products so how do you shift an industry that's estimated now to be valued around 20 $4000000000.00 in the next decade how do you do that you yeah i think that you know levers roll out of their rebranding strategy and you know what type of people they are losing in their new campaigns they said they are going to use inclusive skin tones and in reflection of their new campaign i think it will be incredibly telling of what their true intention is behind making this announcement is actually 2 wards creating an actual change towards breaking the cycle carson or is it simply just like you said earlier in response to everything that's happening in the world right now rather than the true intention behind it so i think the world is watching i think it will be very telling and i think they're going to be held accountable nina davuluri their miss america 2014 and also someone who's been campaigning very
8:22 pm
actively on this issue thank you for joining us out of there any. thanks for having me. well the black line is about the movement is now also influence in the entertainment world following those weeks of global protests creators of the cartoon show the simpsons say they now will not use white actors to voice characters of color anymore now that show had already faced years of criticism for its portrayal of the indian convenience store clock are proof why back to hank azaria stepped down from that role this year there hasn't outlined any specific changes for other characters there and changes also coming on another major american cartoon family guy actor mike henry said he will not voice the character of cleveland brown anymore saying persons of color should play characters of color he's also voiced in the teen or made character well earlier i spoke to kevin powell he's a human rights activist and also wrote the book when we free the world he says they need to be more changes like this across the entertainment industry. i think that
8:23 pm
you know what we're looking at is the fact that hollywood is recognizing that people color but wolf we left out of the participation of these these these care these these these roles whether their voice overs for an evasion or real roles and not just about black people but also asian people let their people native american people middle eastern people the people of color theory and so there's a record a happening because of george floyd being killed on videotape in minnesota minnesota a few weeks back and it's the necessary conversation let's employ people of color in these spaces that they've never been employed in or not on a regular basis the dip your real issue for us in america right now is power sharing and being a part of the decision making process and oftentimes people of color are not even at the table as the decisions are being made that could be races or islamophobia core sexism or any of those things that are actually in the hurting people all over the world not just in america's image is put out there we know that in t.v.
8:24 pm
does is not enough depictions of people of color and again we're not just talking of lack of people were saying that t.v. film animation all of it should look like the world in the world is not just white this isn't but it's not just white people it's everyone and that should be depicted and their cultures should be valued as they're being depicted not stereotypes that are hurtful to people well now facebook says it will stop flagging up more posts that break its rules ahead of the u.s. election and i found that critics have accused that of failing to act on hate speech prompting a boycott by some of the wild biggest advertising of alexia brian. when the us president suggested protesters against racism and police brutality without and said that when the losing stops the shooting starts to as a put a warning on it saying it glorifies violence facebook did nothing its c.e.o. mark zuckerberg has often argued that the platform should take a hands off approach but now that's changing and it will tag posts that break its
8:25 pm
rules if we determine the content maybe we need to violence or deprive people of their right to vote to take their content out no matter who says. social media platforms have been under the spotlight as global outrage grows against racism and discrimination sparked by the police killing of george floyd and may but why they're not focusing on the importance of truth and evidence and verifiability the sort of contributing to a whole lot of these sorts of very underhanded a very dangerous information came. on friday 2 of the world's biggest advertisers coca-cola and unilever pulled their promotions from the platform. unilever's also removing content from twitter and instagram until the end of the year more than $100.00 companies have joined a campaign called stop hate for profit which accuses facebook of not doing enough to combat hate speech the campaign said in
8:26 pm
a statement faced with this tidal wave mark zuckerberg responded today with a small number of small changes we've been down this road before they've made apologies in the past one of those apologies was in 2018 was called to testify in congress over his company's handling of use a doctor and how it was exploited to meddle in the 2016 us election we didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility and that was a big mistake while facebook's shares dropped 8 percent on friday analysts believe this controversy won't hurt the social media giant in the long run they are the total power in the me last year even amid criticism which is very similar to what you're seeing as. their advertising revenues last year 2101 of them are 27 percent and nearly $70000000000.00 u.s. dollars so no. use the gate. with the november presidential vote just 4 months away facebook has already taken down
