being reimposed bars on beaches have been closed and fireworks and parades canceled the u.s. reported another record rise in corona virus cases on thursday with more than 55000 new infections that's the largest daily number any country has reported since the outbreak began california texas and florida all posted record new. cases this week arizona says it's running out of intensive care beds in texas says its hospitalizations have risen to a record high well despite this the u.s. presidents will celebrate 4th of july with a trip to mt rushmore defying health experts recommendations to avoid large crowds donald trump is about to set off for south dakota that's where he'll watch a fireworks display with thousands of people at the landmark mosques will be available but they're not required the site has not had fireworks in 2009 because of environmental concerns and tribes visit is expected to be met by protests as well let's bring in jordan she's joining us from just outside washington d.c.

in virginia and as we're reporting rosen americans are told to really scale back the celebrations this year but the president seems to be sending out a very different message. well that's really been the case a sense of the pandemic really took off here in the united states daryn the president just this week has been insisting that states and localities do have the pandemic under control even though public health experts say that is not the case the president is also trying to was send a message that it is safe for people to go about their daily lives including observing the u.s. independence day holiday and certainly any other year having a 3 day weekend with 2 days of celebrations in far woods would be something that many people would look forward to but as you noted the president is getting ready
12:04 am
to head to melt rushmore in the state of south dakota where not only will about 7500 people be able to sit right next to each other and watch him deliver remarks before a 40 minute long fireworks display but they also will not be required to wear any face coverings during the event that has public health experts very concerned that because these people largely are coming from across the united states that they could be transmitting the virus to each other and then returning to their home communities and setting off a new spread of code that 19 year old and you know the facts speak for themselves in the latest numbers we're getting from many states across the united states is they're just simply not good. not good in the state of texas another 7500 cases and the day's not over yet to another 7 hours before a new date starts here on the u.s. east coast in the state of arizona not only do you have another $14.00 to $1500.00

cases but the country of mexico which is on the border with arizona has stopped all cross border crossings in order to try to stem the spread of the disease the caseload is also rising in california in florida in north and south carolina and in georgia the disease is far from being under control and assume that in many local governments have basically banned people from going to restaurants and bars or going to the beach which is the lake shore in their communities again to try to keep people away from each other and try to stop the spread of covert 19 all right don thank you for that update from just outside washington d.c. and let's talk about this with dr richard lamm from the texas tech physicians he's joining us from the city of lubbock thanks for your time with us on the al-jazeera news hour sara so states are breaking their own records including in texas where
12:06 am
you are how concerned are you at the trajectory of the virus thank you doreen and i'm concerned because we are averaging about $8000.00 cases per day in texas and as a physician i just checked the numbers and there have been 7362 people currently hospitalized that's 4 times more than there were at the beginning at the end of may right so what are you hearing about hospitals in particular because some reports seem to suggest that some hospitals and cities like houston are now nearing capacity. you are correct where i'm at in lubbock we have capacity for more patients but the bigger cities like dallas houston san antonio austin are approaching their capacity and it is said it i believe in houston at least above 90 percent that's very concerning for such a large important city and the governor of texas has now reversed course and he's
12:07 am
mandating the wearing a mask so if people do so and if people avoid crowds and they don't go out on this 4th of july holiday weekend could that curve be flattened and how long would it take yes i don't know the perfect answer to that but i'll use as an example this mess i've been wearing it ever since march and you're right the governor has said you know all public places all texans should wear that they should listen to that. law or that guidance that is very important my best guess is that if they don't 2 weeks later there will be more cases and 2 weeks after that there will be more hospitalizations but right now we're going to fast the messaging of course as we are saying is that americans should stay home and that is the message from health experts but then the u.s. president seems to be sending out a very different message he is on his way to mount rushmore to celebrate the 4th of
12:08 am
july weekend if the president himself wore a mask and if you avoided crowds and if you didn't attend these events would that make a difference. i believe that it may i'm a physician and not a politician but i think our leaders should set good examples are right and one final thought to see you on the president himself and this is not a political question at all but rather it's about testing because the u.s. president maintains that the reason the cases are going up in the u.s. is because of increased testing is that some thing you agree with. i think we are recognizing more people who have it and we need the capacity for more testing recently all the tests being done in. dallas houston austin have made it very difficult for us to get. the proper materials to do the test here testing is key to the tracy most important quite honestly are these masks all right

so we thank you very much richard lamb for us speaking to us from texas thanks for your time. thank you and now health workers in ecuador is capital say hospitals are on the verge of collapse that's because of new coronavirus cases there more than 50 now and 59000 people are infected and over 4600 others have died the government has now begun collecting personal data to ensure people are following quarantine rules and it says the information is crucial to identify anyone who may have the virus or come into contact with an infected person let's bring in terrorism joining us from argentina's capital want to cyrus how concerning is the situation in ecuador. well it is extremely concerning over 60000 people have been confirmed to be infected almost 5000 of them have died and have been confirmed to die of cold 1000 but the thousands of others that were not tested and have the symptoms we can all remember the images from the

city of watch that's right at the ports of the sea shore is old for a while though it's the economic engine of the country where the health care system completely collapsed with bodies piling up on the streets of that city well the epicenter right now it's in the capital keep the worry cases have increased in the past weeks from the very beginning the mayor of key don't post a very strict lockdown in the city to prevent the spread of covert 19 but in the past month they have started to open up the city mostly because of the economic consequences that this has in the country well in that month the amount of infections in the country have increased around 70 percent we just spoke to the mayor of keep the he told us the city's health care system is about to collapse we were just also talking to a doctor in that city who told us that people are dying on a wait while they're waiting to be accepted inside a hospital so subtly there is lots of fear about what's coming next in the city of

quito of the virus is spreading fast the government is trying to control it there was lots of pressure to open up the economy because of the economic situation in the country but certainly opening up has its consequences and tourism over in brazil the country there is approaching one and a half 1000000 cases and we know that the president has signed but he also watered down a lot of people to wear masks in public what's that about. well over 1500000 people infected in brazil over 60000 people have already died the virus spreading to the country's most remote areas and just no precedent so no pass to lower demand and making it mandatory for people to wear face masks that he. vetoed a close off that a new law where he says that in churches schools factorise people are not obliged to wear face masks and this is happening just as some cities in brazil are starting to open up in sao paulo restaurants bars malls are opening up in the city of rio
12:12 am
they've done a deal for example people are allowed to go to the beach to do some exercise they're not out to some bait or remain on the street but restaurants and malls are opening up there was not of tension between governors of those cities and also not initially because they did impose a lockdown in spite that the president was opposing it well they opened up but cases continue to increase we were listening to some experts who are saying that probably they don't. too soon that the cities should remain in lockdown because of the situation in brazil on thursday there were 48000 people infected in the country 1200 people died and that's why the criticism. for his handling of the crisis has been enormous right to terrorism reporting from want to thank you colombians are enjoying their a 2nd of 3 tax free shopping days as the government there tries to stimulate the economy following virus restrictions citizens are being encouraged to venture out
