5:02 am
12 votes in favor no votes against and 3 abstentions but this was not what 13 out of 15 council members wanted only one border crossing bubble how one can now be used to deliver aid after china and russia use their veto power in recent days to block other options so this resolution is not what the united states and a majority of the council fought for and it is certainly far short of what the syrian people need and discern russia's deputy ambassador was competent that the hypocrisy and double standards of our western colleagues at the unprecedented tice you were in negotiations they were ready to jeopardise growth by the mechanism but to delete messages on unilateral sanctions and increasing growth

500000 children if they are ready to look into the mirror tomorrow in nearly a decade of conflict in syria repeatedly starvation has been used as a weapon of war and increasingly humanitarian aid has been politicized what we've seen here in the last week may well be another episode in the international community's response to the syrian crisis that history will judge badly james plays out just syria at the united nations joining us now is vanessa jackson u.n. representative and head of office for care international she joins us from new york for us jackson one crossing point not to what does that mean to the people of syria . you know it's good to be with you and i think it's a very dark day for the security council and perhaps an even darker day for many syrians. we've seen this gradual erosion of humanitarian access become quite
5:05 am
a pattern in the security council but i think it's incredibly worrisome at this time when we have covert cases confirmed in this area this is the snow western region of syria and in the north east so in the space of about 9 months we've gone to having 4 u.n. border crossings to now only having one and this latest closure of one of the major crossings or in into the area around northern aleppo leaves $1300000.00 people without the support of the united nations and as the u.n. has warned the council this will cost syrian lives as far as the cost of syrian lives is concerned does it also mean that that northern aleppo region is more vulnerable not less vulnerable despite what the russians have been saying especially when they kind of play into that agenda on the part of the regime in
5:06 am
damascus who've been saying that all the aid should go through the syrian capital as a 1st stop. in a perfect world it would all be coming from damascus that is the responsibility of the syrian government is to meet the humanitarian needs of its people but we have not seen damascus willing to do that throughout the 9 years of this conflict and the people that are in this area in northern aleppo it's one of the highest concentrations of displaced people it's over 60 percent so these are people that have been displaced multiple times over the course of the last 9 years and they are overwhelmingly women and children so these are the very people that the u.n. was set up to. and we at this stage we do not have any aid convoys coming from damascus to this region there is a negotiation underway to start there. but the closure by the council affective
5:07 am
today manes that we could be looking at least 6 months before any of these combo is actually make it up into this region because of all the bureaucracy and red tape that's required to get all the commissions for the n.g.o.s to make those deliveries and i think that is is the worrying part that we cannot expect the other crossing the one that remains open to be a substitute because in order to get from that crossing into northern aleppo you have to cross a front line and although we have a fragile cease fire in effect now we don't know what the situation will be a in awake in a month in 6 months so for the people in northern aleppo it must be incredibly anxiety provoking particularly for the mothers of those 500000 children

because most of them simply don't know where their next meal is coming from and my . so them don't have access to the most basic hygiene services over 90 percent of the people in these camps and temporary shelters don't have access to so and most of them don't have access to the trains even so we're talking about extremely difficult circumstances that people are living in and they really were depending on the aid that comes across the border from the u.n. and whilst there will still be some that organizations like care of save the children or world vision are able to bring across the border we cannot scale up to the level that the u.n. was able to where we're just not able to operate at that scale and to do so would take up months and months and months if it were even possible ok we must leave it

there vanessa jackson there in new york thank you very much thank you. molly's president abraham is promising to form a national unity government by next week and kate has dissolved the constitutional court as a 1st step towards pacifying the opposition molly has seen its worst civil unrest in years with several people killed during protests calling for the president's resignation people angry at his failure to stop the long running conflict economic problems and perceived government corruption let's talk now to susanna wing associate professor at haverford college and a money specialist author of constructing democracy in africa she joins us from portland maine susanna wing will these concessions be enough. i'm not sure there would be enough but they're certainly a 1st step they're an important 1st step. and i think the idea is that the president is going to join we have the opposition and have hopefully a real dialogue. and and hopefully this will take place under the eyes of

eco wasse the regional group that i think can actually help make sure that this moves forward smoothly. and like i said it's a 1st step that these problems it's not just the security situation in the north it's the sense on the part of many people that in fact the population in general feels quite ignored and the grievances of the population people don't feel they've been met and and that's led to this crisis a sort of blindness on the part of the government to the needs of the people as far as the needs of the people are concerned what is it that the president is missing when it comes to turning around the economy. well you know these are tough times these are tough times in part because of coded but really there's an insecurity. it's exists throughout the entire country so the

destabilization in the north that's moved to the central part of the country means enormously hit on the economy the lack of tourism the lack of of aid to be able to get to certain regions and if you look at these pictures there's a lot of youth out there that are really frustrated that there are simply no jobs there feel like they've reached a dead end there are the schools are closed there are you know there's also there are strikes with respect to the schools and the universities and therefore what is there for the youth in this in this country and and that's part of why these folks are out there demanding some real change and i think part of it with the economy is that it's it's the contrast between a quite wealthy political elite and the mass. of the country the greater

that history in which the protests such as these in fact lead to a complete upheaval and then a more democratic system but we really don't know at this time where this is going to go ok listen suzanna thank you so much for coming on and talking to us here on al-jazeera says i know when they're talking to us from portland in maine thank you . the united states has reported another all time daily high for new infections of the corona virus more than 66 and a half 1000 cases were confirmed on saturday meanwhile president trump has been to a hospital where he publicly wore a mosque for the 1st time since the start of the outbreak particle hayne is in maryland. this is the image then many health experts have been hoping and waiting for the u.s. president sending the message to his supporters that it's ok to wear a mask for many not doing so is a kind of political statement but before leaving for visit to this military

hospital he sent a different message with his words when you're a hospital especially at that particular setting where you're going through a lot of soldiers people that in some cases just got off the operating table i think it's a great degree where they got to have a pretty good bet but i do believe they have a kind of. far from the universal endorsement that might make and supporters change their habits in many of the states hardest hit masks are not mandatory and the numbers of people being tested for and dying from the corona virus are climbing quickly in florida another day of record cases but despite the figures disney world reopened there with restrictions on smaller crowds masks are mandated inside the park but not in this state and the republican governor is not promising any changes soon we really believe that you know those in that 65 enough age group are at the

south korea and it does mean on sunday we will see some showers across areas of japan but nothing like we have seen in the last week so a brief respite there for those french but it is a trail back into the central areas of china but even here it's not just slightly northward so we have actually got a dry couple of days further to the south but the rain where it is will again be particularly heavy pushing through or will hand on to or shanghai and that system working fairly rapidly across the korean peninsula again the rains will be heavy and eventually course as you can see pushing again towards key issue and home she said that won't help of course with the situation on the ground meanwhile across into n.d.'s entrenched pools have been across the areas of the northeast but in particular nepal there is more to come there we've also seen some good monsoon rains across the final question see the storm clouds leaving there more of that in the forecast on sunday across into pakistan as well and then really this monsoon rains very extensive throughout much of the country but again the heavy rains particularly on monday there will be across nepal bhutan and again into.
