an air blockade on the country increased military activity on the border between azerbaijan and armenia with casualties on both sides. and really well into the sports news and as saudi arabia tries to take over a premier league club. that announces that it's canceling the license of one of the premier league's biggest group calls parties be in sports details coming out this hour and billions reaction to. chinese telecommunications giant huawei will be banned from the u.k.'s 5 g. network the move which is a major backtrack on the british government's previous position were likely delay the rollout of the network by at least a year the ban follows sanctions imposed by the us which claims the company poses

and national security threat qua way denies this of the u.k.'s mobile provide. will not be able to buy any new huawei 5 g. equipment after the september 31st they have also been given 7 years to remove all while away 5 g. equipment presently in their systems 3 g. and 4 g. equipment can stay they ok now joins the us australia new zealand japan and taiwan in banning while waste products in their 5 g. networks canada is considering the ban while pressure is also being put on germany that reports a u. turn by the u.k. government but one it says was driven by practicalities not politics. announcing the total ban on huawei kitted britain's planned 5 g. network by 2027 the culture minister said u.s. sanctions looking quite a ways use of american lycra chips would make the company less reliable in future the best way to secure our networks is for operators to stop using new affected one

way to quit and to build the u.k.'s future 5 networks so to be clear from the end of this year telecoms operators must not buy any 5 to equipment from huawei and once the telecom security bill is passed it will be illegal for them to do so. the move against way will please washington which has been pressuring the u.k. to act become pretty had expected it its warning u.k. mobile users will lose out in a statement it says regrettably our future in the u.k. has become politicized this is about u.s. trade policy and not security over the past 20 years while way has focused on building a better connected u.k. as a responsible business we will continue to support our customers as we always have done. the british government hopes the announcement will convince other suppliers to enter the market and fill the gap meanwhile the china skeptics among boris johnson's conservative party are largely happy they say national security must

trump worries about an already damaged relationship and relations will hurt strained over hong kong where china has behaved disgracefully so. anyone thinking it would be the still in a golden era of relations with china is clearly wrong but so be it i think this is the right decision and that we should be calm we want to continue trading with continue commercial relations with the chinese but we've got to be perma the same time it's not clear how quickly or how angrily china will react to britain's decision to get rid of quote way kit but other countries will be watching carefully as they to deliberate on whether to ban the company. al-jazeera london nigel inkster is a senior advisor at the international institute for strategic studies he's also former director of operations and i 6 he joins us on skype from london sir thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera so the government says this decision
12:05 am
was about practicalities not politics what do you make of that. well i think it's actually both the fact you know the technicalities of the that you have the risks that are now imposed by the prospect of a u.s. embargo on technology sales to power are rebel by the simple fact is that you know this is an issue that's riven by politics and i think it's rather disingenuous of my way to make a statement saying that the issue has been politicized because. the whole question of china's relationship with 5 g. has become heavily politicized. if you think just the letter a that a little bit more and also address i guess the question that many people have as to whether huawei is or could in the future be a security threat if it does gain a foothold which now doesn't seem it's going to but gain a foothold in 5 g.
12:06 am
. well i think we need to understand that the united kingdom is so to speak collateral damage in what is an emerging contest in the high technology demain between the united states and china there really are no other players who can compete at that level and what china is clearly aiming to do is to become the global globally dominant. player in 5 g. mobile technology which is in a sense a gateway technology which is going to enable a lot of other capabilities like enhanced artificial intelligence like robotics like autonomous systems and any country that is in the dominant position in supplying this technology is going to derive a lot of benefits from this both economic and geopolitical so at the end of the day this is what this is about and the united states has so to speak drop the ball and
12:07 am
it's because it. has no suppliers who can provide an end to end 5 g. networks. as can so the united states obviously has an incentive to try and slow things down for the week and it can catch up so there is a kind of background to this and as to the national security threats well i think you know he's always been recognized as being there which is why the united kingdom government has had a cell operating in decor for several years now looking at all components of software that go into the u.k. mobile networks and by the way i think it's worth reminding your viewers whoa is not a monopoly supplier to the u.k. mobile networks all of them use equipment from europe variety of suppliers
12:08 am
precisely in order to avoid being overly dependent upon one. when it comes to. us when our actual threat of espionage well you know that is a real and present threat already china is doing a lot of industrial cyber espionage and they don't state espionage and it does so very effectively without having to rely on our equipment. but there are all a longer term issues here about the extent to which quite a way dominance in this sector would potentially give china access to large sophisticated data sets which taken together with other data sets and put through ai programs might so potentially reveal things about ourselves that we ourselves don't know but would certainly not want another power to find out there does seem to be if the coordination least agreement now between countries the u.k. joins the u.s. australia new zealand japan taiwan they've all banned while waste products and
12:09 am
their 5 g. network some european countries are thinking about it as well do you see it as that turning point against china now. i think the danger here is and that may be why china has reacted so strongly to the prospect that the u.k. might change its position as indeed it has done already it is not normal in trading issues between countries when a trade deal goes doesn't go in favor of one particular country that country issues pretty severe threats about the consequences for the country let's say or to award the contract to its preferred supplier so this is not this is not a normal practice and i think that tells us something about the reality of relations between whoa wait and the chinese stayed. visor the international institute for strategic studies and author of china's cyber power sir thank you so

much for sharing your expertise with us kids take you straight now to the white house u.s. president donald trump will make a statement shortly on his administration's policies on china of course we were just talking about that now we will bring you that news conference from the white house as it happens. first though let's cross to our white house correspondent kimberly halkett as we wait to hear from president trump so how is the white house framing the huawei decision which one presumes they are incredibly happy about. yes in fact we got a statement from the u.s. secretary of state peo who says the united states welcomes the u.k.'s battle while way and now the united kingdom joins a list of countries standing up for national security prohibiting what the united states calls untrusted and high risk vendors referring to while away indirectly now this is sort of

a campaign that this administration has been waging for some time in fact we know that right now the national security adviser robert o'bryant is in europe meeting with some of the u.s. partners there to discuss concerns not just about walk away but broader concerns with respect to china and what has been the aren't going allegation here in the united states about its technology is the reason that they are not available here and that is that the united states accuses china of conducting backdoor as been through these technologies and so we've seen the united states taking you know very strong stand against while way we know that the department of justice as far back as february accused it of racketeering but we've also seen more recently in terms of china rather actions taken by this administration and the u.s. congress and in a very divided america what we've noted is that some of this legislation has had bipartisan approval considering the hong kong national security law that passed unanimously and we are expecting that the president may sign that legislation in

the rose garden also as of yesterday monday here in the united states the u.s. president his administration rejecting china's claims territorial claims in the south china sea and also we've seen the united states sanctioning chinese leaders over the treatment of chinese muslims so we're watching carefully to see what next steps might come about we have been told repeatedly that there would be more actions against china we don't know if this will involve the tit for tat trade relationship that has really consumed much of the administration's time in the early years or whether. it will take the form of banning particular apps that the united states is concerned about specifically tick-tock and we chat so we're watching carefully for the president's message in the rose garden absolutely and i will chat after he's spoken for the moment kimberly halkett at the white house thank you. now as we've just heard china is accusing the united states of trying to stir up trouble in the south china sea and that's after secretary of state micro

a catch to remember for this baseball player. the international court of justice in the hague has ruled in favor of qatar in a dispute with 4 arab countries that imposed a blockade on the gulf state and prevented cathy aircraft from flying over their air space the courtroom the u.n. civil aviation agency has jurisdiction in this case that this feud began in 2017 when saudi arabia the u.a.e. and egypt severed ties with catherine and impose the land the sea and air blockade the accused catherine the government of supporting terrorism allegations that doha has strongly denied qatar called on the international civil aviation organization to declare the air blockade illegal but the blockade in countries a said the u.n.
12:17 am
agency didn't have jurisdiction to handle the dispute in 2018 the agency rejected that claim insisting it did have jurisdiction a move in katherine's favor the blockading countries then asked the international court of justice to re-examine the issue of jurisdiction it has now ruled in katherine's favor once again it paves the way for doha to possibly sue for compensation or find other ways to end the air blockade steadfast and reports now from the hague. it was a complicated case and covert 19 restrictions did not make it any easier only a few representatives of each country were allowed inside the court building known as the peace palace but the ruling read by the president of the international court of justice did not leave any doubt because. one. you know any more project is the other deal brought by the kingdom of bahrain.

of egypt the kingdom of saudi arabia and the united. the court also ruled that the international civil aviation organization the kerio has jurisdiction in the case filed a complaint at the council in 2017 say in saudi arabia bahrain egypt and the u.a.e. violated in 1944 cheap cargo convention dealing with free passage of passenger planes through foreign airspace parties now have to go back to the council now that the council's decision has been affirmed the go back to the council and continue the case and that's when we get to the real heart of the matter the real issues about. their services been interrupted. not only did the 4 countries impose an air blockade on 3 years ago but they also stopped all traffic over sea and over land this left qatari aircraft having to make detours to fly in and out of
12:19 am
the last year the i.c.j. also ruled in favor of qatar saying the u.s. was killed 3 of racial discrimination by expelling qatari citizens and separating families there are certain sanctions that the council me grant the state of qatar for example not allowing the member states to vote in the general council or even to certain extent participate in certain important meetings and that will have its own. harsh side effect on those states a clear decision by the international court of justice and a clear victory for qatar but despite this win in the long legal battle this still no reason to celebrate just yet this is another step in the 3 year long dispute with blockading nations although a significant one representatives of the 4 blockading nations left court without making any statements with the backing of the unanimous i.c.j. ruling gattaca now asked their governments to compensate it for the financial

hello there i'm afraid is still not feeling very much like summer across central and northern areas if you're this kind of a cloud as well giving is a little bit dull and we've also got one to rain showers meanwhile we've also got some pretty good weather though some places. can take you straight to the white house with the president trump let's listen in good about. therapeutics and possible vaccines but we're going to go over quite a bit maybe at the end we'll take some questions if we have time it's not too hot. today aside legislation and an executive order to hold china accountable
12:31 am
for its oppressive actions against the people of hong kong hong kong or tanami act which i signed this afternoon passed unanimously through congress this law gives my administration powerful new tools to hold responsible the individuals and the entities involved in extinguishing hong kong's freedom we've all watch what happened not a good situation. their freedoms been taken away their rights have been taken away and with it goes hong kong in my opinion because it will no longer be able to compete with free markets a lot of people will be leaving hong kong i suspect and we're going to do a lot more business because of it because we just lost one competitor so way it is we lost a very very serious competitor competitor that we incentivized to take a lot of business and do well and we gave them a lot of business by doing what we did we gave them things that nobody else had the
12:32 am
right to do and that gave them a big it edge over other markets and because of that edge they've done really historic business tremendous business far bigger than anybody would have thought years ago when we did this. gift we it was really a gift to freedom today also signed an executive order ending u.s. preferential treatment for hong kong hong kong will now be treated the same as mainland china no special privileges no special economic treatment and no export of sensitive technologies in addition to that as you know we're placing massive tariffs and have placed very large tariffs on china 1st time that's ever happened to china and billions of dollars have been paid to the united states which have given quite a bit to the farmers and ranchers for country because they would target it and that's been going on for 3 years the 1st time anybody's ever done anything like
12:33 am
that and prior to the plague pouring in from china they were having the worst years you know in 67 years and i don't want them to have a bad year want them to have a good year but they were taking advantage of the united states for many many years and that's stopping. but then the then the virus came in and now the world is a different place but we're now getting back and one of the reasons the market's doing so it's almost at the point that it was that prior to the plague almost we're getting very close it's a great thing it's an amazing thing what our people have done and what they've endured no administration has been tougher in china than this administration we imposed historic tariffs we stood up to china's intellectual property theft at a level that nobody's ever come close we confronted untrustworthy chinese technology and telecom providers we convinced many countries many countries and i
12:34 am
did this myself for the most part not to use while away because we think it's an unsafe security risk it's a big security risk and i took many countries out of using it they want to do business with us they can't use it just today i believe that u.k. announced that they're not going to be using it and that was up in the air for a long time but they decided and you look at it early you look at many other countries we withdrew from the chinese dominated w.h.o. and we fully. rebuilt the united states military the w.h.o. world health organisation. we were paying close to $500000000.00 a year china is paying $39000000.00 a year and china had too much say they worked very hard which is
12:35 am
a. bad thing done by our past administrations but we were tough and were saying i was asking us why are we paying so much more than china china has 1400000000 people we have 325. probably 325000000 approximately nobody can give the exact count we're trying to get an exact count but you have over the years many illegals who have come into the country so it depends on how you want to count it but you could say 325-2350 1000000 people as opposed to 1400000000 people and the world trade world trade is terrible that deal is terrible of the world health is terrible deal we've been very tough on the world trade organization and we've been. i guess this stuff as you can get on world health we withdrew our money we told them we're getting out doesn't mean that someday we won't go back in maybe we will when it's correctly run but they made a lot of bad predictions and they said
12:36 am
a lot of bad things about what to do and how to do it and they turned out to be wrong. and they were really a puppet of china and make no mistake we hold china fully responsible for concealing the virus and unleashing it upon the world could have stopped it they should have stopped it would have been very easy to do at the source when it happened in contrast joe biden's entire career has been a gift to the chinese communist party and to the calamity of of errors that they have made they made so many errors and it's been devastating for the american worker china has taken out hundreds of billions of dollars a year from our country and we rebuilt china give them all the credit in the world i don't give the credit for the people that used to stand here because they allowed this to happen where hundreds of billions of dollars were take it out of the united
12:37 am
states treasury in order to rebuild china it's no company and no country in the world no country in the world has ever ripped off the united states like the incredible. job that they did on this country and the people that ran it possibly it's one of the reasons certainly it's one of the very big reasons trade and things related to trade that i got elected in the 1st place i've been talking about it for a long time along with many of the subjects frankly joe biden supported china's entry into the world trade organization one of the greatest geo political and economic disasters in world history. if you look at china you look at that moment they joined the world trade they were flat lining for years and years and years and decades and then all of a sudden they joined the world trade organization and they went like
12:38 am
a rocket ship. they were given all sorts of advantages they were considered a developing country as a developing country they got tremendous advantages over the united states and other countries and they took advantage of those advantages and and then some biden personally led the effort to give china permanent most favored nation status which is a tremendous advantage for a country to have few countries have it but the united states doesn't have it never did probably never even asked for because they didn't know what they were doing as vice president biden was a leading advocate of the paris climate accord which was unbelievably expensive to our country would have crushed american manufacturers while allowing china to pollute pollute the atmosphere with impunity yet one more gift from
12:39 am
biden to the chinese communist party. they took all of the advantage away from us they took everything away they don't have oil we would have had a close up tremendous amounts of our energy to qualify eventually not too far into the future we would have had it done to do things that would have been unbelievably destructive to our country including the possible closing of 25 percent of our businesses think of that and it was going to cost us hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars for the privilege of being involved in the paris climate accord and you just have to look at what took place this year in paris and france where money was being sent to countries all over the world and the people of france didn't want to take it and they didn't and they did a lot of rioting had their taxes raised we would have had to raise our taxes
12:40 am
and it was a disaster i've been given a lot of credit for what i did there took a certain amount of courage i guess because it sounds so nice the paris climate accord but it wasn't good for us at all america lost nearly 10000 factories while joe biden was vice president think of that 10000 factories he wrote something today and he made a statement today that i wrote down pretty accurate so biden was here for 47 years 8 years the last 8 years not long ago as vice president he said one in 5 miles of our highways are still in poor condition what we're doing a good job and highways but why didn't he fix them 3 years ago why didn't he fix them tens of thousands of bridges are in disrepair. and on the verge of collapse
12:41 am
it's probably not a right number but we have bridges that should have been fixed why didn't he fix them he was in for 8 years with president obama why didn't they fix him tens of thousands of bridges this is what he wrote high speed broadband we want high speed were low why didn't he get it 3 years ago is not a long time. and he didn't do any of the things but now he says he's going to be president as president he's going to do all the things that he didn't do and never did never did anything except make very bad decisions especially on foreign policy so joe biden president obama freely allowed china to pillage our factories plunder our communities and steal our most precious secrets and i've stopped it largely but i've stopped it and it wasn't easy because you talk about a certain power of the telephone in the calls where they would call and say no we
12:42 am
don't want to do that or the countries would call in behalf of china but i did it i did what has to be done and you just take a look at what's going on and take a look at the kind of at the numbers where they devalue the currency in order to pay the tariffs now the democrat party is calling for de-funding of our military think of that the funding they wanted to fund our military when china is building a massive military and building a massive military and biden wants to de-fund our military and the world needs american strength right now more than ever and we've got it we've we've got now soon as it all this equipment comes in or made in the usa we've got the newest most incredible weapons anywhere in the world with the best tanks the best ships the best missiles rockets. we have the best of everything we have the best fighter jets
12:43 am
the f. 35 the f. 18 all of these assets of being built tankers credible tankers bombers hope we don't have to use them but we have the most incredible military when i came in the military was totally depleted it was it was at a level that was just absolutely incredible you know the statements i made the statements before i told you what generals told me about our military and i'll make him again if somebody needs him we'll give him to be very well documented as vice president biden opposed tariffs and he was standing up for china didn't want to do anything to disrupt their relationship with china even though china was taking us to the cleaners he opposed my very strict travel ban on chinese nationals to stop the spread of the china virus he was totally against it xenophobic he

called me xenophobic a month later he admitted i was right we would have had thousands of people additionally die if we let people come in from heavily infected china but we stopped it we did a travel ban in january nancy pelosi was dancing in the streets of chinatown in san francisco a month later and even later than that. and others too they all thought what i did was a terrible mistake we would have lost track dr fouts he said he would have us thousands of additional people if president trump had to do that and i was a crowd of one because even experts didn't want to do it they thought it was a mistake and then i did europe when i started seeing what was going on in italy and spain and france and other countries in europe i did a ban on people coming in from europe that would have been disastrous for our
12:45 am
country also. and we saved tens of thousands of lives but we actually saved millions of lives by closing it closing up we've saved millions potentially millions of lives could be a number that we're actually working on but it could be 2 to 3000000 lives so we're 135000 which is terrible one is too much but we would have had millions of people dead from this curse that came at us but we did what we had to do and now we'll put out the flames as it as it happens we have to get the schools open we have to get everything open a lot of people don't want to do that for political reasons not for other reasons but if we had listened to joe biden hundreds of thousands of additional lives would have been lost and if you look at the job he did on swine flu i looked at a poll that polls on everything nowadays and they got very bad marks on the job
12:46 am
they did on the swine flu. h one n one he calls it in one h one h one n one. listening to president on all trump they are speaking at the white house one of the things he said was that you signed legislation and an executive order to hold the china accountable for the national security lord imposed in hong kong you also said he's ending hong kong's preferential treatment as a punishment against china for what he called its oppressive actions against the people of hong kong all right let's cross live to kimberly halkett who is at the white house and was also listening to the news conference so he mentioned a lot of things that the hong kong line i think one of the most important ones what else stuck out for you. what stuck out for me is that this
12:47 am
was really supposed to be a press conference about china but with each line from the prepared speech the president seems to dye grass and use this as an opportunity to rail against his opponent in the upcoming presidential election in november the presumptive democratic presidential nominee joe biden and the fact that he was previously the vice president in the administration of barack obama with each foreign policy decision that donald trump talks about that he has done to take action against china he then as an aside points out that he thinks either that joe biden didn't do a good enough job in the past with respect to what done trump is done or wouldn't do a good job in the future so the concern i think many americans will have with this speech before we touch a quickly couple of points is that the president is using the rose garden the people's house if you will as a location for what appears to be a campaign rally given the fact that they cannot be held due to cope with 19 in the
12:48 am
attempts to do so such as we saw in tulsa ended with many more people being infected so that's sort of the over arching message that i draw from this having said that there are a couple of important points you really hit the headlines and i think those are the announcements that the press office was hoping the president would focus on but he is once again taking action or at least voicing his strong displeasure against china for the fact that he doesn't have a strong economy to win reelection blaming him for what he calls the china virus to you 1st that is covert 19 talking about how he believes thousands more americans would have died pointed the fact that there are more than 130000 but he believes it be even higher if he had not closed the u.s. borders to chinese travelers early something he did back in january saying that he was a crowd of one that many people mocked him including joe biden for doing so and then . he goes through sort of a laundry list of other actions that he believes he's done to take strong action
12:49 am
against china i should point out many of them he has been successful on and have been applauded by both democrats and republicans but that very strong message that might have been successful for the president pushed forward seems to be getting diluted by the fact that he keeps trying to use this as a campaign tool instead of a policy speech you know he really did touch on a lot of issues there kimberly how with the latest analysis on that news conference by the president can really thank you. now the world health organization's latin america branch says there's been a significant increase in corona virus cases in haiti they also say the number of infections are expected to continue to rise over the coming days restrictions are continuing to be eased there with worshipers now allowed to gather at churches more than 140 people have been killed by cope with 1000 in haiti with the number of
