prime minister. was sworn into office iraq has seen months of unrest as it deals with an economic crisis and ongoing political instability simona fulton joins us live from baghdad simona just explain to us the circumstances surrounding these 2 people who have lost their lives. well these anti-government protests started in october last year and there were the largest demonstrations that we have seen in iraq since 2003 but then over the months as the security forces used violence to crack down on the demonstrators and also because of the coronavirus endemic and disillusions we have seen that the that the demonstrations have largely died down since the beginning of this year with only a few dozen demonstrators remaining in tahrir square now what we have seen over the past 2 or 3 weeks is once again a rise in demonstrations not just here in baghdad but also in the southern provinces and these demonstrations have been very much driven by the lack of

services including electricity it is at the moment over 50 degrees in iraq but many people have only access to a few hours of electricity per day so these years of grievances have once again boiled over they've once again driven the people to the streets and we are now seeing larger numbers again gathering and this is what happened last night where there was a group of demonstrators that marched from tahrir square in the direction of the square and this is when security forces opened fire using a live i mention killing at least 2 demonstrators and injuring dozens more it's also important because these are the 1st fatalities related to the protests that have happened since prime minister most of the me took office in may and he's somebody who has promised has made a plan to try to 1st of all make a long list of all of the over 600 demonstrators have lost their lives in these protests and to try to bring about some sort of accountability but also

compensation for their families so while this process is ongoing and the prime minister tweeted about it just last night we also now seem to have once again a surge in violence so it remains to be seen how the prime minister will react his spokesperson did condemn the events and promised investigation. he said that security forces have been ordered to only use force as a last resort so we'll have to see how the prime minister will react whether there will be some kind of strong stance against what happened last night and whether also we will see a further escalation in demonstration in response to this latest violence does the prime minister when we talk about the security services engaging with the protesters does mr carter me have total control of his people on the ground. this is a very good question peter because there have been since the beginning of the protests many accusations that part of the security forces who are cracking down on
1:05 pm
demonstrators are actually acting outside of the chain of command that some of them are wearing civilian clothing that some of them have been longing to armed groups that are not actually part of the anti riot police so those accusations have existed since the beginning but until now we have never really had a conclusive investigations that has really determined who those people are so this question remains very difficult to answer and there is there is a possibility that on the one hand it could be that the prime minister has limited ability to control what happens on the ground but we also don't know the exact circumstances of what happened last night there have been attempts by several parties political parties as well as i'm groups to infiltrate the protests and to provoke the security forces so until we actually know what exactly transpired how exactly exactly the situation escalated it is difficult to say but what is what is certain though that prime minister mr park calamy has moved against certain armed

a time where we've seen several states across the region and across the country with people demanding better security especially in daraa for of course the history of darfur is well known it is a conflict ridden region a conflict that's out in 2003 and that it displacement of millions hundreds of thousands who are still in camps and say they cannot access their farms they say when they do go out armed people attack them and therefore they're demanding better security but we've seen a spike in the number of incidents of violence now the security and defense committee held an emergency meeting yesterday and they've promised that they will be able to that they will send troops and that they will be ready to use force to ensure the lives of civilians especially in the western region of darfur so the government said that it will send troops it will do what it can to make sure that the lives of the civilians are protected but so far you know this is just civilians are asking who is involved they want the government to be able to identify the perpetrators of these violence and hold them to account they say that impunity is
