no man or machine has gone before launch is its most sophisticated mission yet to find life on mars. with 4 stories today including criminal proceedings in switzerland against the president a deadline for russia to avoid exclusion from. saudi arabian investors pull. united after months of premier league scrutiny. the coronavirus pandemic is crushing the world's most powerful economies and any recovery is being threatened by a new surge in cases the u.s. recorded 1400 fatalities from code 19 on wednesday around one death a minute and is now reporting its worst economic decline on record output collapsed

by 9.5 percent in the 2nd quarter of the year europe's largest economy germany saw a decade of growth all but wiped out as g.d.p. shrank by more than 10 percent in a country that's avoided the worst health problems but it's in developing nations where people are likely to suffer the most likely. mexico where the economy has shrunk by a staggering 17.3 percent in fact there's a warning that the entire economy of latin america and the caribbean could contract by more than 9 percent this year or more in latin america with daniel schorr in a moment he's in his ariz but 1st to cover and his own dough in new york and historic decline in the u.s. so not seen since the great depression what now. you know what now essentially is that it's very clear now that the u.s. economy is not going to come back in till the u.s.
12:03 am
can get to get control of the coronavirus pandemic that continues to really overtake many parts of the country right now in the us and i mean back in march the u.s. economy essentially shut down close economy and in april congress injected trillions of dollars into the economy which helped people and helped businesses basically stay alive if you will during those terrible months april may or so but the idea was from the white house and many lawmakers in washington was that trillions of dollars would go into the economy and then the expectation was is that come july coronavirus would be under control and that the u.s. economy would be roaring back to life well it turns out that that was a big miscalculation because that simply has not happened for a whole host of reasons and now you're seeing the economic decline in the u.s. continuing i mean just looking at the unemployment numbers the new numbers came out
12:04 am
that in the past week 1400000 americans filed for unemployment benefits in the last week now putting that in context that's the 19th straight week in the u.s. that the unemployment numbers have been over 1000000 people filing for and point employment claims so you can you see how staggering those numbers are clearly this is not going to get better the economy until the u.s. can get hold of coronavirus and get it under control and then just as that those warnings come that the recovery might be frightened by a new surge in cases that that appears to be what's happening what's happening now across america that with the outbreak. yeah in short there are still dozens of states where the numbers are going up as we know florida texas in the south it was going up quite a bit but the new area now that everyone is worried about is the midwest we've seen
12:05 am
numbers increasing in the last day or 2 from states like ohio illinois wisconsin the governor there calling for a mandatory mask mask to be worn in public and dr anthony fauci the head of the infectious disease department of the c.d.c. has said the midwest is now where they're seeing. the most increases of potential cases but they're also keeping a close eye of course in california texas arizona and florida as well u.s. is still has many many states that are seeing rising numbers of cases and also rising numbers of deaths a reason to thank you very much indeed and let's go now to there is that daniel sharma who joins us live from what desire is some polling numbers for latin america particularly mexico what more can you tell us about what's happening there. what will make secure as you mentioned more than the economy shrinking by more than

17 percent in. april may and june of this year this follows the economy already struggling in months previous to that and that obviously translates into businesses closing jobs being lost and some of talked about as many as $10000000.00 people joining those suffering from poverty traditionally when people have suffered from poverty in mexico and central america they've gone to the united states to look for work but there's. just told us that is unlikely to be an option in the future with the in the in the near future certainly with the united states economy suffering also right across latin america we've heard that g.d.p. is likely to shrink by over 9 percent this year that will put any progress back. in so far as development of economy is going is creating unemployment is going as much as 10 years as what economists are saying so there's
12:07 am
a lot of ground to be made up there and as we heard from the united states similar situation here the numbers of people suffering from cobbett 19 is only going up we've had record numbers on wednesday of the number of people dying in the 24 hour period in brazil where there's now been more than 90000 deaths here in argentina in bolivia so the numbers keep going up at the same time of governments because the economies are struggling or asking people to go back to work we had a president job also not all who's just gone over 3 weeks of suffering from cope with 19 back out on the trail in northeastern brazil urging people to go back to work the economy to get back on its feet so you've got these 2 pauls the economy shrinking people falling into poverty and the numbers of corporate 900 suffers going up daniel sheiner thank you very much indeed. germany managed to control its coronavirus outbreak much better than its neighbors but its economy has still been

hammered dominic kane is in berlin he says the future is dependent on keeping a lid on infection. this is the worst quarterly performance for 50 years for the the german economy because that refers back to the west german economy rather than to the east german economy but nonetheless it is very bad news but as was alluded to this is needed this needs to be seeing through the prism of what had already been predicted for the quarter and several months ago once the 2nd quarter was underway once the pandemic was really here taking hold of the economy of the country the predictions had been that they would be expected that the economy would shrink by almost 10 percent in the event it's a bit more than 10 percent but not much more than that and so there's very much the sense coming from ministerial circles that they feel that they've kept a lid on it that they've prevented it from being much worse than they possibly imagined and indeed there are elements certain sectors in the economy that are
12:09 am
rebounding already from the worst. problems caused by the pandemic and the economy minister several weeks ago was talking about his hope that the economy would rebound in 2021 but obviously all of that optimism is predicated on there being no 2nd wave of corona in this country that's why over the course of the past few days and indeed over the course of the past few weeks we've seen a succession of state prime ministers of federal ministers trying to urge caution trying to urge people around the country for not doing things that might cause corona to come back. world's biggest plane maker has posted a net loss of $2200000000.00 in the 1st half of this year losses in the face of the coronavirus pandemic a larger than expected its revenue has fallen by almost 40 percent as the travel

open a criminal case against the head of world football president jenny in frontino. donald trump has ignited another political firestorm by suggesting november's presidential election be delayed just to avoid fraud u.s. states want to make postal voting easier due to public health concerns over coronavirus a white house course from can really help it says many are concerned by trump suggestion including senior republicans. the president for his part is masterful kind of redirecting the news cycle and almost as soon as these gloomy economic numbers came out the u.s. president sent out this tweet that really redirected the news cycle but what is concerning to so many in the united states is the fact that we're really about 95 days from voting day and what the president has done essentially is set up least
12:12 am
for his supporters the possibility of rejecting the results of the november presidential poll many are pretty concerned about it and have had some rather sharp words that includes members of the president's own republican party i capitol hill you know you have top ally lindsey graham in the u.s. senate has said look this isn't a good idea nother top congressman saying that this might be about trying to get press attention but isn't likely to get any traction but the strongest words came from the top republican in the u.s. senate mitch mcconnell here's what he had to say well never in the history of the country through wars depressions and the civil war if we ever have to really. look you know and then we'll find a way to do that again this november 3rd we will cope with whatever the situation is and the look and all over but there are already scheduled now we should point out that the president himself has also said he may not accept the results of the
12:13 am
november poll of minister in a speech to lawrence douglas who's a constitutional law expert he's also the author of will he go to president trump and the looming election meltdown in 2020 he joins us on skype from sunderland in massachusetts thanks so much indeed for being with us so there is some pushback on all sides against this idea of president trump but just to go back to the original twitter mention what was he trying to achieve anything with this. well 1st of all i mean i have a pair of viewers realize that he can't do what he claims to want to do that is to delay the election itself and that's what they did his authority as president election day said by federal law so only congress would be able to actually change the day of election and in terms of the politics behind this kind of claim i suppose there are 2 things one is it's kind of an unusual. usual feature of donald trump style that he often diverts attention from one horrible thing by doing
12:14 am
something else that's also pretty bad and so it's possible that he was trying to divert attention from the economic news by tweeting out this kind of remarkably destabilizing statement on the other hand they do think it's part of this larger politics that he really has kind of laid out in advance of the election in which he could arguably challenge the result so on that to that in the last few minutes he then he then treated it must know the actual results on the night election not days months or even years later and that's something that you've needed to in iraq explain to us why why that could be an issue. right so it's a little bit granular but you have to bear in mind it's going to be tens of millions of americans who in order to avoid the health risks associated with in person voting are going to be selling batman ballots and that tend to be people in densely populated urban areas and we know that people in densely populated urban areas but overwhelmingly democratic and we also know that those votes are not going
12:15 am
to be counted until days or even weeks after the election that's not a sign that the electoral system is not functioning properly that just the reality caused by a large influx of mail and ballots so it's certainly possible that trump could have a lead on november 3rd but only because of the 10s of these hundreds of thousands or millions of mail in ballots in swing states not having been counted and so i think again it's part of kind of a preemptive strike and his part to insist that whatever lead he might enjoy on november 3rd actually represents the final result of the election rather than just a tentative result pending the count of these mail in ballots that are on the cell phone and he hasn't had any support really from from leading republicans and on the contrary what messenger to think that will send him to president trump. of the cure
12:16 am
for really sense much of the message at all you know even with the lindsey graham coming back and saying well the idea of delaying the election is not such a great idea i mean that's a pretty weak pushback relatively speaking i mean one would hope that even republican lawmakers would say a this is a heinous idea and b. mr president you don't have the authority to do it but i do think that many republican lawmakers if in november election turns on a relatively narrow margins in a handful of swing states and those margins only become clear with the count of mail in ballots you could find many republican lawmakers actually accepting trump's claim that you should be the new to reelect the president based on a narrow lead under the reserve and just before you mention the fact that he's going to have distracting him and that the fact that we're talking about this as
12:17 am
just a in in effect he kind of he wins that game more often than not by and by moving me on to something else other than the coronavirus biggest sale or the economy yeah i mean he is a genius of distraction and the fact that we're discussing this really is a testament to that genius on the other hand i do think it is part of a consistent politics of trying to prepare at least his base to discount any electoral results in which he loses as a result of the large influx of mail in ballots and that's a very dangerous thing it has been emerged as a kind of consistent pattern of his electoral strategy and arthritis thank you very much indeed for taking the time to talk to us not just here my pleasure. india has reported more than $50000.00 new cases of corona virus in a single day for the 1st time a surge of infections is mostly in rural areas where the government has been easing

me my family and all of society. nasa has sent what it's calling the most sophisticated mars rover ever launched to seek out life on the red planet perseverance will take rock samples that will one day make their way back to earth comes at a point of intense interest with similar missions from china and the u.a.e. also on route and got to reports from florida. we're. launching on a mission to mars this is the start as nasa has most ambitious project to answer the question point are we alone. it will take the perseverance rover almost 7 months to reach the red planet and if all goes well place the car sized robot safely in the $20.00 crater once they're the rover will spend almost 2 years exploring an ancient martian lake a location scientists say may hold the building blocks to life so one of the key
12:21 am
steps that perseverance is taking is collecting samples that can be brought back to earth in the future and then analyzed with all the trust real laboratories we have which should actually provide us a definitive answer to our question. in a 1st in space exploration the rover is equipped with an experimental helicopter called ingenuity it plans to make several hops above the planet's surface something nasa say will be a wright brothers moment in space ingenuity helicopter on the perseverance rover is one of the most exciting aspects of the mission because this will be the 1st time we demonstrate flight on another planet and that's really important as an exploration tool if all goes as planned this would be nasa's 9th rover to land on mars and so far the most sophisticated perseverance will carry out an experiment to try and generate oxygen down through the martian atmosphere drill for rock samples and most importantly look for signs of frozen microbial life if you keep adding
12:22 am
more rovers you get incremental increases and. but bring the samples back murdering thousands of scientists and hundreds of laboratories look at them that's where the big increase of biology is going to come once the samples are collected nasa plans to retrieve them by launching another mission to the red planet before hopefully returning with them safely to earth what the mission delivers may answer the question did mars ever have life before any of that happens perseverance will have to land on mars a window of time nasa calls 7 minutes of terror that's how long it takes the rover to send a radio signal back to earth the curiosity rover managed in 2012 and if perseverance does the same it will begin a whole new era in the search for life on the gallacher of his era miami florida well the race to the red planet has been heating up in the united arab emirates nourse its 1st ever mars mission 11 days ago the craft called alemao meaning hope
12:23 am
won't land on the planet but will orbit for a whole martian year that's $687.00 earth days china followed suit sending the young when one rover to mars exactly a week ago reaching the planet in february it will circle for a time before landing to analyze rocks and search for water but nasa says its perseverance rover is the most sophisticated of the 3 loaded with cameras drills and lasers it will collect specimens of the martian landscape which will then send back to earth arriving in 11 years time. it was a fearsome is an astrophysicist she joins us from bristol via skype thank you very much for being with us so that the 3rd mission to mars in 11 days what would you think stands out particular about this one. with the perseverance rover and mars 2020 as a whole it's the beginning steps of something that planetary scientists have been trying to do for decades since we 1st trying to get try to get going to mars
12:24 am
back in the seventy's which is to bring samples back to earth where we can study them on earth and i think that's the bit that makes this particular mission really exciting the fact that we're finally beginning that process of bringing these samples back to earth so to the collective it is that which bit of it is more difficult the collecting of it all the bringing them back it's putting them back is probably going to be the trickiest bit that's actually going to probably require at least 2 missions maybe more but i think the current plan is to have 2 separate spacecraft go out there so what perseverance is going to do is it's going to go around and scoop up rocks and dust put them into these the old test tube sized containers and create little treasure troves another mission is going to come along another rover pick up that will then put it into a rocket which will send it to all bit where all get caught by yet another
12:25 am
spacecraft that will then bring it back to earth so it's a very long process and each bit of it has its own complications and its own problems but nasa and the european space agency who've been are going to help out with that but for that mission i've been working on this stuff for years they know what they're doing so hopefully it should all go to plan and in the search for signs of life what sort of things are they are they aiming for. the big thing that's really governed the search for life on mars is is following the water it's called for the last 2 decades of research on mars it's always been about going where the water used to be and following it that's why perseverance is going to touch down on a form a lake bed. and that's because where on earth you find water you find life so we think it's one of the fundamental things for at least earth kind of life that said
12:26 am
that a lot of those things like organic chemicals which are things that contain hydrogen and carbon and so we'll be looking for those as well and you mention the kind of complicated to arrangements for trying to bring back the samples once they've collected them it does all that prepare for future human missions to mars. one of those things that people are building towards if you can land something big and heavy like the curiosity rover and person before perseverance and perseverance itself then you can start laying down the infrastructure and there's actually be a really interesting experiment on perseverance called moxy and what that's going to be doing is it's going to try and it's going to suck in the carbon dioxide atmosphere of mars and strip out the carbon and try and create oxygen which will be useful as a because people can breathe that b. you can also use it as rocket fuel so that was going to be an interesting experiment that might be actively building towards putting people down on mars elizabeth thank you very much indeed for taking time to just thank you. still to
