thousands are still imprisoned after protests against sunday's disputed election. hones in schools damaged beyond repair and a severe shortage of hospital beds one week on from beirut last cleanup efforts revealed the extent of the devastation. and a rise in child labor in syria as the war forces more children to earn money for their families. and i'm fond of how much and i have all the support the european champions league return to action with an all new format 8 teams are in portugal of 4 knockout time and that will decide this season's witness. at the start moment in american politics will play out in just a few hours from now the presumptive democratic presidential nominee joe biden will make. first joined to parents with his pick for vice president said it had come to

her as she is the 1st black woman to be included on a major party's presidential ticket the 2 are expected to deliver remarks and wilmington delaware biden's hometown just ahead of the event the biden harris campaign released its 1st ad since the announcement. i was raised to take action my mother knew that she was raising 2 black to others who would be treated differently because of how they learned growing up whenever i got upset about something my mother would look me in the eye and ask so what are you going to do about it we are in a battle for the soul of this nation but together it's a battle we can win we just have to take action. where us president donald trump took aim at harris and a tweet he said started strong in the democrat primaries could not hold onto support went on to say that makes her the kind of opponent everyone dreams uls. she
6:03 pm
joins us now live from washington d.c. so allen as we've been saying it a few hours time biden harris will take the stage together for the 1st time since this announcement what should we expect. i suspect it will be a look not like the previous v.p. unveilings that we've seen in the past quite simply because become crisis means that there can't be a huge rally there would be a lot of supporters there would be the usual lot but joe biden morsi is convinced that can help him win the white house and that he will win the election on november the thought i can express her loyalty to joe biden no republicans are already framing. someone that no one in the democratic party like they go back to the primary where she pulled out before they even cast the 1st vote in iowa. that when she was a prosecutor in california she didn't appeal. the left wing of the democratic party
6:04 pm
and she didn't appeal to the right wing of the democratic party trying to frame her in a way that the one turned north from people of color and to make sure that independent voters door move to the biden campaign the difficulty they've got is if you look at all the polls at the moment joe biden is ahead and ahead in most of the swing states he will get a bounce from his v.p. pick that always happens hillary clinton got it from tim kaine even know a great deal of the country didn't know who tim kaine wards and so there will be a bump in the pause but they now have the republicans now have from august to november to try and frame camelot hard as in a way that voters and for the next couple of days they'll be struggling because obviously the coverage is all about camelot and what she brings to the ticket with a few words of criticism about her past and there are things there that the
6:05 pm
republicans can exploit so what does she bring to the ticket then aren't. well you've got to remember that she's 55 joe biden is 77 if you wins the election you'll be 78 that's the oldest anyone has ever been sworn in as president of the united states so she marks the next generation there are people who will look at joe biden at the age of 77 and see what happens if something happens to you over the next 4 years they want to look at the vice president and think can you step into the job that was certainly one of the prerequisites that joe biden was looking for someone who would be able to do the job immediately if there was anything wrong with him and so she brings with her experience in the senate not a huge amount of spirits in the senate but experience in the senate she said on the intelligence committee she knows the threats that are facing america that was important to joe biden as well she is a fundraiser someone who's already. raised $5000000.00 for the campaign and she's
6:06 pm
very popular because when she goes out she. relates to people on the campaign trail and she's very good at summarizing very complex issues so all of them will add to joe biden strength she doesn't want to overshadow the top of the ticket she doesn't want to immediately placed herself as someone who's seen as a natural successor to joe biden but she's obviously someone and the republicans are worried about because the fact more than a month to prepare for joe biden making his announcement they all knew all the people who were in the running the way that we did and they still haven't been able to frame camelot in the way that will resonate with supporters and in a way that is consistent with all of the people who are appearing on t.v. and radio over the last 24 hours ok i think if that helen fisher there live from washington d.c. . carla harris his record will be scrutinized like never before in california she worked as a prosecutor district attorney and state attorney before moving on to become a u.s.
6:07 pm
senator she's been accused of being reluctant to intervene in cases involving police killings during a democratic debate hawaii senator tell thinking about accused her of putting more than 1500 people in jail for marijuana violations heiresses decision on prison reform have also been questioned when the supremes court ordered california to reduce crowding in jails the attorney general's office that was sued accused of keeping inmates in jail to bolster the state's prison labor force lawyers for her says all this deny the accusations that harris has been a strong advocate for justice reform in her role as a senator and has spoken out strongly against for these brutality in the wake of the george floyd killing. joining us now from washington d.c. is ashley bryant adviser to high heights for america the only political action committee dedicated exclusively to electing more progressive black women she's also
6:08 pm
a principal that a.b. partners a communications firm thank you for your time what was your reaction what is your reaction to this pick of color the house is running mate well thank you for having me and quite frankly i am thrilled i mean joe biden has made an outstanding choice in kaamelott harris to lead this country forward she had the band a champion for the voice of the people she has been a champion in criminal justice reform and she quite frankly has been you know one of the few senators that have stood up in the time of this uprising in the united states you know as george lord was being memorialized she stood on the senate floor to really push for it anti-lynching bill which is a landmark legislation for the black community and people of color as a whole and so it's just it's exciting to know that we're going to have someone in washington that has lived the experiences of the black community and the disenfranchised and will be a voice for us as we look towards the next 4 or 8 years ok as we said earlier i
6:09 pm
mean her record as senator has been compared to her record and lord foresman some of criticized to be reluctant to intervene in cases of police brutality that she had the opportunity to do more and she chose not to what do you make of that. you know i think many folks that have been either district attorneys or attorney generals are often having to defend their records i think where we're not seeing is that folks are really speaking out she actually has one of the most progressive records as a d.a. in the country she put forward landmark less legislation to really hold folks accountable rather from big corporations but also ensuring that acknowledging that there are broken systems and practices in our criminal justice system and she has put forth real reform especially around legislation and acts hard especially
6:10 pm
for children and families and the education. bill reform and so i think you know putting all of that together i am confident that is certainly still a person that we want on the front lines dismantling but also pushing for a much much deeper reform in this country and just finally. as a woman of color what needs to meet for the country at this particular point in time. think you can and you know come a lot has been a champion for women and black women specifically just last month she put a bill to really push forward research for even uterine fibroids which is disproportionately affected by black women the health disparities in the black community especially in black women is really dangerous in our community and to know that camila has been a champion will continue to be a champion i mean these are really the issues that are critical not just to our

community but to our to our families and ensuring that our children can grow up in a healthy and unbiased health care system and you know that alone is worth my vote 10 times over thanks so much for your time ashley brian there advised the to hire hunts for america. thank you. i do more ahead on the news are including. in all my curfew 3 days of violence in eastern sudan leads to heavy restrictions. and the deepest economic slump on record the u.k. plunges into recession as a result of the global pandemic. in sports back with a win the serena williams place of 1st competitive match in 6 months. but the way the u.s. president says he and the leaders of latvia and poland already to mediation the

bellows crisis that e.u. sanctions may be imposed if it refuses the offer hundreds of women in the capital minsk have marched to protest against police brutality anti-government demonstrations show no sign of easing around 6000 people are still detained they were arrested during violence with security forces of the past 3 nights began after president alexander lukashenko was declared the winner of a vote his opponents say was rigged stepped out and has more from minsk. what we saw in the last couple of nights when the people came out at night protesting not knowing really what to do so there were different parts of the city now this is one group of women as you can see they're all waving flowers they are also saying stop beating us and they get an enormous response from people around this area who see them there honking their horns as a sign of opposition and also they always think people are crying people are really emotional to see this act of defiance because these women are very brave if we
6:13 pm
consider what violence has been happening in the last couple of nights around 6000 people have been detained already of course they are now also risking arrest but so far police has left them alone i think the government is completely confused what to do with this out poor of anger and this opposition force that has reached unprecedented heights he has never seen such a thing during his 26 years rule and the only answer he has found so far is to crack down on the ferry badly and he's been hitting a whole families women children men everyone has been hit by this so this has created even more anger and we see these women they may not want to accept this so you will need to find another solution there have been talks about negotiations with the with the opposition but the last comment we got from our present location
6:14 pm
to was that he wants to create jobs because he says all these protests protesters are criminals and they simply have nothing else to do the u.s. secretary of state my pompei or describe the vote is neither free nor fair and said america was wanting developments closely. we watched the election and we are we were very concerned about it wasn't the way it was free and fair we care about that because we care deeply about the ballot people this is i talked about the czech republic we want what people della reese to have the freedoms that they're demanding that they think are in their best interests. vasantha is an assistant professor of political science at the massachusetts institute of technology she says the government's crackdown manned up backfiring the main developments as i see are the unprecedented mobilization of the population valerie's has seen some electoral process before but this is by far the largest response so there is

widespread feeling in belarus of disillusionment with the regime anger and finally a willingness to act on it so the situation is still developing it's very difficult to predict how it will go by you know the important things are people going in the streets massive response by the state widespread internet shutdown which are meant to stop for the nation i'm on the part or stars. and even in small regions in villages all around those people are going in the street and some of the state owned factories have organized strikes in response my sense is that eventually the correct down will reduce the number of people in the streets but in the long run it probably will backfire because the people are increasingly
6:16 pm
angry so. you know it's short round solution that just abolitionists the situation in the long run. the world health organization says more than home for the hospitals and by not functional there is a launch humanitarian effort on the way just over a week since the port explosion that killed more than 200 people and the scale of the devastation is increasing pressure on lebanon's leader is talks at the moment to form a new government that horrid joins us now live from beirut all the week now since the blasts wants happening there where you are. where are at martyrs square which really has been the epicenter of a protest movement that began in october to demand a new leadership what people here want is a new government that's independent a new government with new faces new parties they don't want those who have been governing this country for decades back in power but it seems that their demand is
6:17 pm
not on the table at least for the time being what is on the table is some sort of a deal between the different political factions from across the political spectrum the former government was controlled by the hezbollah led alliance they control parliament they have the majority in parliament but they realize that they can't govern alone they have been isolated 1st of all hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by the united states and gulf arab allies so it had little friends and 2nd it failed it failed to prevent the disaster that blasts that tore the lives of so many people apart so it's reaching out to the former prime minister sato how do you know who has friends in the international community but saddle had has his own conditions he may be willing to accept hezbollah retaining some sort of political influence in the next government but he wants a free hand to be able to manage the crisis to be able to carry out much needed
6:18 pm
reforms the previous government failed to do that then the international community was very very clear before the blast they said the billions of dollars that this country needs in order to. isn't it to solve the economic crisis that will not be made available until the state fights corruption so the different political factions are now negotiating behind closed doors there is a political crisis a caretaker administration means that decisions cannot be taken and all the while as my colleague bernard smith reports the people are struggling to rebuild. rich or poor the beirut explosion didn't discriminate 10 people died in the luxury seaview apartments that overlook the port and alice assad's house. she and her 2 children had left home half an hour before the blast they raced back to find this. alice pays a rent fixed in the 1960 s. the common practice here if the landlord can't afford the repairs or release the

funds home will probably stay like this i now must learn to most important thing is for the kids to have a place to sleep comfortably with food we will not starve but we need our home back . businesses too must find the money to rebuild if they think it's worth it. this country was already enjoying an economic crisis after a shortage of foreign currency last year sent its currency into freefall of the i.p.o. through if you will be able to put more money into it i don't know we need help not only also. everybody. needs some 70000 homes and a so far uncalculated number of businesses were destroyed or damaged when 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded at beirut port last tuesday. a dozen schools also need rebuilding this is the city's oldest the school of the 3 doctors
6:20 pm
in the challenge is huge an explosion of the scale is exceptional before rebuilding you have to appraise the struck. sure see if everything can hold up sometimes you have to consolidate sometimes you have to destroy to rebuild so it will take real building expertise. every homeowner every business every institution needs glass and building materials and nearly all of that is imported. so they need dollars. but their money is locked in inaccessible bank accounts for many here it's effectively stolen by a political elite that's been running the country for decades. so the pressure is on parliament to appoint a new prime minister and a new cabinet and it's been made clear to them that they'll be no international funds for the city's reconstruction until the parliament ends the dominance of iran backed hezbollah and its allies french president emanuel says he wants to see progress by september the 1st. bernard smith al-jazeera has.
6:21 pm
many challenges ahead you mentioned the world health organization talking about the health care system the health care system was already close to collapse before the blast the thousands of people who were injured putting further strain on hospitals which lack medical supplies and now coronavirus cases on the rise so the needs are great but the international community making it very very clear the new government needs to fight corruption needs to carry out much needed reforms in order to be eligible for billions of dollars of aid yes they're providing the emergency assistance food water and medical supplies but to fix the economy that is going to take a government willing to fight corruption indeed thank you for that said huldah there live from beirut. the german health minister says he's skeptical of russia's corona virus vaccine on tuesday russia became the 1st country in the world to give

regulatory approval to a covert 19 vaccine president vladimir putin even said his daughter was inaugurated germany's sponsors the vaccine has not been sufficiently tested and could be dangerous for mccain has more from berlin. mr spann saying that the problem with rushing a vaccine out which hasn't been shown openly to be safe and to be effective against the corona virus is something which he fears he fears could kill off the efficacy of vaccines generally going forward the point they're making therefore is that they need to be able to see the data upon which the russian government has based its assertions that this vaccine is good to go as it were contrast what the german government is saying with what certain other governments are saying a suggestion that the governor of a large state in brazil is going to be in meetings on wednesday with the ambassador

the russian ambassador in brazil about what might be able to be done there but even in brazil there are certain senior officials who have expressed grave reservations as i say about the haste with which the russian government is proceeding to marketing this vaccine as something that large chunks of society will be able to use anytime soon as i say the most important thing here is the germans are being very cautious they themselves have their own research into vaccines they've put a lot of money in in towards it but they are saying what needs to be done here is proper peer research and open research where other scientists are able to analyze what the germans have done what anything to victim has done that says it's found a vaccine so that it can be verified and falsified and because they say they haven't been able to do that that explains the the caution with which they are viewing what's going on in moscow. 3 people have died in the indian city of they go

alone and go it alone essentially to give them a 2 thirds majority a controlling stake in parliament so how that impacts on the way the mechanism of government takes place in terms of the actual cabinet that's been named there are 8 relatively few minority representatives very much their supporters being included so as to how inclusive it's going to be or they feel ness is it dated to be something that we'll have to wait and see at least $127.00 people have been killed in south sudan turned fighting between government troops and civilians the army was carrying out an operation to disarm civilians in the state when the violence began reports. in the greater tonge area attacked security forces investigation is underway. sudarsan all much curfew has been imposed in the eastern city of port sudan after 3 days of violence medical sources say at least 25 people have been

killed since fighting broke out between members of rival ethnic groups the state of emergency was imposed last year after fighting between the 2 sides over morgan is in how to with the details. first of all let's look at how this has been unfolding this is not the 1st time we see travel clashes between the beni armor and the nuba tribes it's been going on for years now and has escalated over the past 12 months for the last year we've seen fighting resulting in the deaths of dozens and injuries of hundreds we've seen a state of emergency imposed their will that was eventually lifted but it kind of gives you an idea of the wider context of not just the eastern part of sudan but really the whole country tribal identities and ethnic identities do play a role in how things unfold on the ground now in port sudan between 2 individuals from opposing tribes from the billionaire and the move the tribes that eventually pulled in members of the same tribe so we've seen the government responding by

sending more troops yesterday the prime minister is due to brief the security and defense committee to morrow to try to figure out a solution on they've called for calm the newly appointed civilian governor has imposed. a curfew in the eastern city so they are trying to mitigate the tribal clashes between the 2 sides but this needs to be addressed at the root the root causes of this conflict needs to be addressed now those 2 sides as i said have been clashing for several years now which has escalated over the past few months no solution no deep rooted solution has been found yet and for many they think that it's an idea an issue of who actually deserves to be imports down who deserves to be identified as part of the east and who is actually somebody who is overstepping on a territory that is not there is so a lot of issues right now at stake mostly the issue of ethnic identity and tribal identity and who belongs and who doesn't and it looks like every government does

well you know there is a do a show we will rate then die a country that has all their problems obviously facing food shortage years we are already station mainly of emergencies what i see in beirut in the area i am which is providing relief for the people in but by these blasts i see things are ok but we understand that in the next weeks and in the next month lebanon the city hall is going to be having a problem i see already that when you go to the supermarket things go as 3 and 4 times more that what they used to cut when people don't have enough money to buy food that keeps increasing on price is when the crisis began so let's hope that the people of lebanon the government of lebanon these able to control the cost of food that these abilities simple solution to make sure that people have enough money to
6:37 pm
afford to feed themselves well that leads into my next question when food is so expensive and you know there are so many people who are in need people who are homeless who don't have access to food how long do you foresee being there in beirut for how do you pull out of that situation. so we're going to send out $100.00 gets in right now we're in 7 countries where it's small and you know about we rely on the partnerships with studies with many chefs and restaurants around the wall in america long we've done already over 25000000 meals we've been in business while in colombia. indonesia here we're going to be for the next few weeks to make sure that this response this crisis is we are able to handle it what is the next phase we are going to stay here longer to try to help. areas where hunger can be bigger for dad
