the or math class without being afraid of getting shot he wants all our kids to grow up with leaders who won't just serve themselves and their wealthy peers but will provide a safety net for people facing hard times and if we want to chance to pursue any of these goals any of these most basic requirements for a functioning society we have to vote for joe biden in numbers that cannot be ignored because right now folks who know they cannot win fair and square at the ballot box are doing everything they can to stop us from voting they're closing down polling places in minority neighborhoods they're purging voter rolls they're sending people out to intimidate voters and they're lying about the security of our ballots these tactics are not new but this is not the

time to withhold our votes in protest or play games with candidates who have no chance of winning we have got to vote like we did in 20082012 we've got to show up with the same level of passion and hope for joe biden we've got to vote early in person if we can we've got to request our mail in ballots right now tonight and send them back immediately and follow up to make sure they're received and then make sure our friends and families do the same we have got to grab our comfortable shoes put on our masks pack a brown bag dinner and maybe breakfast too because we've got to be willing to stand in line all night if we have to look we have already sacrificed so much this year so many of you are already going the extra mile.

even when you're exhausted you're mustering up on imaginable courage to put on those scrubs and give our loved ones a fighting chance even when you're anxious you're delivering those packages stocking those shelves and doing all that essential work so that all of us can keep moving forward even when it all feels so all overwhelming working parents are somehow piecing it all together without shout care teachers or getting creative so that our kids can still learn and grow our young people are desperately fighting to pursue their dreams and when the horrors of systemic racism shook our country and our consciences millions of americans of every age every background were always up to march for each other crying out for justice and progress

as well as the brother of george ford were among some of the people to speak as well as a precaution q. and a with joe biden will also be hearing from him later this week the month senator bernie sanders as well as former 1st lady michelle obama both headlined this 1st night of speeches let's take a listen to some of what they've had to say if you think things cannot possibly get worse trust me they can and they will if we don't make a change in this election if we have any hope of ending this chaos we have got to vote for joe biden like our lives depended on it i know joe he is a profoundly decent man guided by faith he was a terrific vice president he knows what it takes to rescue an economy beat back a pandemic and lead our country. this election is the most important in the modern

history of this country in response to the unprecedented crisis we face we need an unprecedented response a movement like never before of people who are prepared to stand up and fight for democracy and decency and against greed oligarchy and bigotry and we need joe biden as our next president. that's now cross over to the white house where our correspondent allen fish as live for us now allan a call to action by democrats mostly though through attacks on trump. i think for michelle obama obviously quite emotional towards the end of her keynote speech. for someone who famously does not like politics and even mentioned that during her speech this is perhaps one of the most searing indictments of the trump presidency that we've heard she talked about how there not been just
6:07 am
a failure of policy but a failure of character and she said that doesn't just make me upset it's infuriating and then the point that she was making is that donald trump. had not met the moment and was not fit to be president and therefore that is why in her opinion the country should vote for joe biden she made the point and it's a very good point that people will listen to her because michelle obama what will still popular in the country and particularly popular with democrats she does divide opinion and a lot of republicans simply do not like her so they are not going to listen to what she has to say but clearly what the democrats are hoping is that she can reach it to some republicans and we've heard from plenty over the last 2 hours who are changing their vote from 2016 when they back donald trump to support joe biden this time around and perhaps even independents and again making the point. that people
6:08 am
stayed away from the polls and 2016 for a number of reasons because they didn't like hillary because the democratic party didn't vote in joe biden bernie sanders is the nominee for a variety of reasons she's saying essentially this time you've got to put those divisions behind you get behind the democratic nominee joe biden and vote him into office getting rid of donald trump it was. a searing indictment of donald trump and i suspect if it been played in a hall in a normal convention there would have been a lot of applause lines but that was quite a damning assessment of the last 4 years from the former 1st lady a damning assessment of the last 4 years to a friend battle some days he was a little some real stinging criticism from him how do you think that's likely to pass. well the fact that barry sanders is criticizing donald trump isn't new
6:09 am
but the fact that he was there and he delivered the speech in support of joe biden was significant because this is him saying essentially to all his supporters you have got to get behind the democratic nominee this time and he made a very interesting point in his speech he said joe biden from day one will deliver this and this and this and a lot of those items were really items on bending sunders wish list things he would have done if he'd become president and that was reaching out to sunder supporters to saying look we may not have got the nomination but we are going to get a lot of what my campaign wanted to see they're going to talk about how to deliver universal health care they're going to talk about student loans they're going to talk about the climate and how they can make it build a green economy all of these things important to what would be described perhaps as the more progressive wing of the democratic party which is represented by bernie
6:10 am
sanders so it was an important speech from him but what's what was more important is the fact that he was here if you cast your mind back to 4 years ago to the opening night of the democratic convention barely supporters stood there with tape over their most this a that they were being gagged they went being allowed to speak this was all being done for hillary clinton and they felt that their voices weren't being here this was bernie sanders saying to all of those people yes your voices are being had and there is action being taken we are moving in a progressive manner what will happen on the back of that speech though is that the republicans will try to tie joe biden directly to bernie sanders saying look if you vote for him you're going to get a socialist government in the united states so they will tie the 2 together very closely which is exactly what the democrats have done tonight as well and for that analysis for us from the last house thank you very. well now let's speak to joel
6:11 am
rubin former u.s. deputy assistant secretary of state and he joins us live via skype from chevy chase maryland joe thanks for being with us still i do want to start with michelle who chorused top billing tonight that was as alan was saying a very empathetic emotional speech really speaking to this moment and it really was about hope it sounded also like it was aimed at undecideds at really getting out the vote will that work you know list. michelle obama's speech was incredibly powerful and she is very very popular in fact if you've been watching some of the the back and forth on talk shows about who would be vice president many republicans said if she were vice president joe biden would win in terms of his pick so there's a real concern among republicans that michelle obama could be devastating to their chances to win and she speaks to to america across the board so her lines are
6:12 am
cutting into donald trump's character or are you mad that he basically has failed to deliver and should not return for a 2nd term that is a powerful indictment from a woman who has major credibility across the country at a very high level well let's spend 10 to bernie 6 sanders who was the other headline and tonight he took a very different approach in terms of tone much more of a series of direct attacks on thompson at one point saying that he gulfs while running burns a selection is about preserving democracy alan there was saying that tying him to joe biden could potentially actually backfire couldn't. well allan is right in that that's how the republicans and donald trump are going to try to portray this but the mission for bernie sanders tonight was to really ensure that the base of the party is mobilized and going out to vote in november that was something that was weak last last election cycle 4 years ago and democrats we
6:13 am
believe that if we had had the kind of turnout in 2016 that we did in 2012 we would have won it would have been close but we would have won so we want to get back to that in critical and that is ensuring that the base voters the sanders voters do come out so the republicans don't want that they're going to try to tie us in knots try to separate us i think what bernie sanders said snape is to say no my voters come out support joe biden and we can deal with those attacks well more more more unified and he really did a fantastic job on that front oh don't tell we heard from a number of notable republicans tonight and we are going to be hearing from another number of them over the course of the next 4 days do you think that could be a strategic error in bringing move as across the line will that be affected. you know if you were an alien coming into the country the world for the 1st time come to united states watches would see a diverse set of speakers u.s. you bernie sanders you would see john kerry's dick the former governor of ohio
6:14 am
who's a very conservative republican you would get the sense of the broad swath of america supports joe biden and i think that's the message and that's going to continue to be the message that this is an inclusive party a big tent and that joe biden is welcoming those diverse communities diverse thought and republicans included yes and liberal democrats included as well though all of a seat at the table if he can get that message across every night it's going to be very welcome welcoming argument for voters in particular independent voters in swing states as we get closer to the election. even though a former u.s. deputy assistant assistant secretary of state thanks so much for joining us again here on out is there a talk you as me continue with our coverage of what's a very different day and say this. coming up tear gas and stun grenades fired at demonstrators in sudan demanding fast a change a year off to a power sharing deal assign. an event expected and former lebanese prime minister

agreement between military and civilian leaders is flawed several year anybody that the political parties did not have a long term vision they were in a rush to reach a deal they lacked a national spirit and went into negotiations based on the interests of their own respective parties and leaders now it's difficult for them to lead in the interest of the people at heart the deal known as the constitutional declaration came after months of negotiations following the overthrow of president obama and the forces of freedom and change which led anti-government protests demanded as the government and ended up with a plan for the military to lead for the 1st 21 months and a civilian for the remaining 18 months until elections also included were more freedoms and ending conflicts such as in dar for was made a priority the transitional government admits that changes the low but says it takes time and there are challenges. there's still time to 7 months to go in the transitional period before elections are due but many of the provisions of the power sharing agreement are yet to be implemented
