6:04 am
looking to punish anyone far from it but it's long past time the wealthiest people and the biggest corporations in this country paid their fair share and for our seniors social security is a sacred obligation a sacred promise made they paid for the current president is threatening to break that promise he's proposing a lemonade a tax that pays for almost half the social security without any way of making up for that lost revenue resulting in cuts i will not let that happen if i'm your president we're going to protect social security and medicare you have my word well most powerful voices we hear in the country today is from our young people they're speaking to the inequity an injustice it has
6:05 am
grown up in america economic injustice racial injustice environmental injustice i hear their voices if you listen you can hear them too and where there are some accidental through existential threat posed by climate change the daily fear of being gunned down in school or the inability to get started your 1st job will be the work of the next president to restore the promise of america to everyone and i'm not going to have to do it alone because i have a great vice president at my side senator kamel arris she's a powerful voice for this nation her story is the american story she knows about all the obstacles thrown in the way of so many in our country women black women black americans south asian americans immigrants the left down on the left behind but she's overcome every obstacle she's ever faced no one's been tougher on the big

6:08 am
put up with foreign interference in our most sacred democratic exercise voting and else always stand for our values of human rights and dignity. a work in common purpose for more secure peaceful and prosperous world history history has thrust one more urgent task on us will we be the generation that finally waves out the stain of racism from our national character i believe are up to it i believe we're ready just a week ago yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of the vents in charlottesville close your eyes numb which is so on television i remember seeing those neo nazis in klansman a white supremacist coming out of fields with lighted torches veins bulging spewing
6:09 am
the same same and i semitic bile heard across europe in the 30s remember the violent clash that ensued between those spreading hate and those of the courage to stand against her member what the president said when asked he said there were quote very fine people on both sides it was a wake up call for us as a country and for me a call to action at that moment i knew i'd have to run as my father taught us that silence was complicity and i can never remain silent or complicit at the time i said we are in the battle for the soul of this nation and we are you know on the most important conversations i've had this entire
6:10 am
campaign it was some was a someone who was much too young to vote i met was 6 year old giana floyd the day before her daddy george floyd was laid to rest she's an incredibly brave little girl i'll never forget it when i leaned down to speak to her she looked in my eyes and she said not quote daddy changed the world daddy change the world her words burrow deep into my heart. maybe george florey murder was a breaking point maybe john lewis is passing the inspiration but however as come to be however it's happened america's ready in john's words to lay down quote the heavy burden of state at last and then the hard work of rudy now our systemic racism you know american history tells us
6:11 am
that has spent in our darkest moments that we made our greatest progress that we found the light and this dark moment i believe we're poised to make great progress again that we can find the light once more you know many people who heard me say this but i've always believed you can define american one word possibilities the defining feature america everything is possible that in america everyone and i mean everyone should be given an opportunity to go as far as their dreams and god given ability will take them we can never lose that in times as challenges these i believe there's only one way forward as united america or you 9 in america united in our pursuit of
6:12 am
a more perfect union you 9 it in our dreams of a better future for us and for our children united in our determination to make the coming years bright are you ready i believe we are this is a great nation we're good and decent people for the lord's sake this is the united states of america and there's never been anything we've been able to accomplish when we've done it together the irish poet seamus heaney once wrote. history says don't hope on this side of the grave but then once in a lifetime the longed for tidal wave of justice can rise up and hope and history rhyme this is our moment to make hope and history ron i'm with passion and
6:13 am
purpose let us begin you and i together one nation under god you not out of love for america united in our love for each other for love is more powerful than hate hope is more powerful than fear and light is more powerful and dark this is our moment this is our mission now history be able to say that the end of this chapter of american darkness began here tonight as love and hope and light joined in the battle for the soul of the nation and this is a battle we will win and we'll do it together i promise you thank you and may god bless you and may god protect our troops. are you ready says joe biden as he accepts the nomination of his party 77 year old joseph robinette biden jr former u.s.
6:14 am
senator former vice-president now the democratic candidate for president of the united states his wife jill joins him on stage there what would have been if the convention had gone ahead as usual in front of a huge crowd instead in front of a big video screen that's symbolic of our times isn't it like a giant zoom the same time a harris is running mate is there. and there is joe biden and jill biden a passionate. speech from joe biden who calls this a life changing election he says character compassion decency democracy science who we want to be very our role on the balance we can and will overcome this season of darkness in america. and as the celebrations go on there in wilmington delaware we bring in alan fischer
6:15 am
who is our correspondent outside where that is happening allan what did you make of it. might just be having a little bit of trouble with alan fischer there at the moment but maybe he can hear me now alan fischer our correspondent and i'm going to go to someone was actually. yeah go for it allan. it's an intriguing speech isn't it it's a very intriguing speech joe biden had to rise to the moment i think most people would accept that he did i got a text from someone who kept in touch with over the years who is a republican and iowa they said that joe biden looked presidential this evening and they said did you see donald trump earlier on today making their own trust i think
6:16 am
he made the point that he has a plan for the future he laid out the 4 key areas that he sees a grave concern at the moment he called it the perfect storm that is the corporate crisis the financial crisis climate change and also the battle for racial justice if you take the republicans and what they've been saying over the last few months as joe biden has carried out his campaign largely from his home here in delaware they see that he is incoherent he is close to dementia he's not good at speaking i think i was laid in the last hour or so and what is perhaps the most telling point of all of joe biden's address is that not once not one single time that he mentioned the name donald trump but it did not stop him criticizing the record of the man who is currently in the white house or you know about this president is if he's given 4 more years he'll be what he's been for the last 4
6:17 am
years president takes no responsibility refuses to lead blames others cozies up to dictators and fans the flames of hate and division he'll wake up every day believing the job is all about him never about you is that the american you want for you your family your children i see a different america when this generation strong selfless and humble it's an american we can rebuild together. as president the 1st step i will take we to get control of the virus that is ruined so many lives because i understand something this president has done from the beginning we will never get our economy back on track we will never get our kids safely back in schools we'll never have our lives back until we deal with this virus. so as alan fischer points out there joe biden
6:18 am
not mentioning donald trump's name at all and as far as i can see on twitter no reaction from donald trump unlike yesterday when he was shouts tweeting in all caps when president obama gave his speech let's go into a bit more of the speech we heard a little bit there joe biden focusing on issues such as the coronavirus and how he will deal with that and then a large section of the speech about race. yeah let me just talk about. your piece here because we're not having a fireworks display which is kind of traditional at the end of a convention we weren't sure we would get one should. i think he laid out what he described his agenda on those 4 key areas i think there was a really telling line look right at the start whoever wrote or helped write the speech did an incredible job. and i think most independent of sadness would except
6:19 am
that. he essentially said look i'll run as a democrat and that i will be an american president that was ever holding on to republican voters who want to walk across the aisle and join with democrats in this election that was absolutely that moment he talked about how do we get people to watch this criticism on twitter i see it from a piece in miller very close to the trump campaign saying that his plan would stop fracking in places like pennsylvania and that means there will be millions of jobs lost in the energy sector and this is going to be an argument particularly in swing states like pennsylvania that the trump. but biden has got to come in he says look climate change is a crisis but it's also know we can create an industry that makes america the world leader in green technology and he's also talked about infrastructure now let me tell you about covering the white house every week we're told what they're doing is
6:20 am
going to be what donald trump is concentrating on this whether it's immigration or whether it's structured drugs and a number of times at least on. that problem president saying hold it with infrastructure and this week donald trump was going to talk about his plans for infrastructure and it never seems to happen but something always seemed to be a one off message with this tweet. here you go biden saying. we concentrate on infrastructure will get broadband to rural areas will to think about building new bridges and building new roads and building. making sure that there are more to an airport something that donald trump has talked about but hasn't done oh yes there have been road projects in many states if you drive across and you run into the poll the time but there doesn't seem to be you know why this
6:21 am
is what joe biden is talking about and he believes that that will create. and he's talking about his wealth taxing millionaires billionaires but also these the likes of amazon owned by the exhaust which mans billions of dollars here but still pays very little in taxes and relative and so these things will get people's attention he didn't spend a great deal about foreign policy we didn't expect him to do that but when he talked about russian influence he said that we will stand up to dictators we call low rate them being and interfering in action and in a really pointed remarks something that has been bouncing around in the political bubble for the last 3 poor weeks with a story about the russians paying the taliban to kill american soldiers putting a bounty on american heads. well biden says he will confront russia about. the
6:22 am
white house donald trump is that a number. and we're told that he has never raised that because he wasn't sure of the intelligence however. 3 of state has raised it with his opposite number he's quite secure in the intelligence and that then leaves the question why we. know about this so this was a message. to biden essentially said that. in. american leadership in the world. that they will stand by the allies and stand up to. the feline which. resonate with through the election so if you've got another question you do a lot of one well i'll give you a little break just now alan from that because you've been doing a terrific job there we'll just take in some of these pictures of the fireworks that we're seeing if you're joining us on al-jazeera around 320 g.m.t.
6:23 am
which is around 20 past 11 on the u.s. east coast wilmington delaware the fireworks in the night sky as joe biden has just accepted the democratic party's nomination for president of the united states. seems out there support. with their lights flashing the fireworks going. and it's quite a sight and it's a moment for joe biden and let's not forget that alan and i did get our math a little wrong earlier but we cleared it up 32 years after he 1st ran for the office of president of the united states and joe biden is now at 77 years old the standard bearer of the democratic party he will go up against donald trump in november and speaking of donald trump he has tweeted i think we've got it here to show you he said this a few minutes ago in 47 years joe did none of the things of which he now speaks he
6:24 am
will never change just words that's all we've heard from the president as i said earlier in contrast to yesterday when president obama spoke and donald trump was shots tweeting during the speech so that's the reaction from the white house this is the picture in wilmington delaware where the fireworks have stopped and so hopefully alan fischer can hear me now alan fischer our correspondent who's been covering the whole convention for the last 4 days i'm just going to go back to my notes and have a little look at some of the things we heard. from joe biden charlottesville i thought that was interesting referring to the far right rally unite the far right that happens there when joe when president called me a nazi is very fine people and joe biden said it was after that that i knew i had to run. it's interesting that that seems to be the tipping point for him because of course as we've been saying barack obama
6:25 am
and others thought this was the time for a new generation of democratic leaders to step up and as you rightly point out joe biden is 77 he tuns 78 in november and deflected he will become america's oldest ever president the past that holds that record at the moment as of course the current incumbent in 600 pennsylvania avenue which is donald trump i thought the whole build up to the biden speech was interesting to watch as well what we got war is the campaign essentially emphasizing 3. i suppose aspects of joe biden's character which is compassion faith and empathy and there were many stories about when he reached out to someone who had a problem and i think perhaps the most emotional video of the evening was from the 11 year old boy who stutters and joe biden also has
6:26 am
a stutter and how he helped him trying calm but this and i saw some people saying on twitter i'm not crying you're crying it was one of those emotional moments but it's clear that joe biden seems to be one of these people who can reach out and connect with people and so when donald trump says in 47 years joe biden did nothing that's not entirely true and we had a lot of the record that joe biden guided through the program to restart the american economy which. barack obama inherited after the great recession when he won election he coauthored and pushed through the senate the violence against women act he was slightly ahead of his party when it came to the question of gay marriage i remember the day it happened he was doing a television interview and said that he would certainly support the idea of gay marriage before the supreme court had even said yes this is something that could go ahead and not only was he ahead of his party he was ahead of his president that's
6:27 am
not something that normally happens and certainly not something that we've seen in the current administration so that was a telling moment so joe biden has a record of 47 years there is always the the question and people campaign of yes i've been in washington but i'm not part of washington there is a feeling that the rest of the country wants to put washington away they're fed up of washington politicians but i think in the speech joe biden essentially established himself as someone who is caring and compassionate and someone who has faith and can connect with people and that. is what the republican convention and now donald trump has to work against when he has his time in front of the cameras next week alan fischer is a correspondent in wilmington delaware the democratic national convention allan we will back be back with you a little bit later on right now the light to introduce you to a couple of people on the left hand side of your screen is michael phone tree in
6:28 am
washington acting director of the ronald w. walters leadership and public policy center that's at howard university and we've also got back with us to take 80 in texas a political strategist with full circle strategies and someone who was part of the 2008 obama campaign thanks to both the future taker will come to you 1st just seeing as we did speak to you earlier about your expectations of the speech did it live up to your expectations it absolutely did i think that was an incredible speech tonight vice president biden at least spoke to the soul of america i could literally could feel him in my heart and soul tonight i think that he did exactly what he needed to he spoke to we are americans are he gave was not contrast between himself and president and he also laid out a plan for how he's going to get america back on track i think it was an excellent job
6:29 am
a home run michael michael fauntroy in washington your early take on what you heard from joe biden. well i thought it was what a presidential nomination speech should be it gave a really broad overview of some of the things that he would like to do as president but as we've learned over the course at lest 8 to 10 presidential elections really being able to communicate certain characteristics like integrity decency empathy that kind of thing is is really important in the eyes of most voters and throughout the entire week resawing people speaking on joe biden's behalf that emphasize that and he drove that point home and so today just sort of discussing how he was raised and some of the trials and tribulations that he's overcome throughout his own life i thought he did a really good job connecting with that and i also think he did a really good job and not going to deeply into policy because i don't think that
6:30 am
voters actually want that in this kind of speech what did you think of him not mentioning donald trump by name is very pointed yeah well it was a bit of a surprise quite frankly given what reseller yesterday with former president obama but in the end i don't think it matters very much people understood who he was talking about and who is running against and so you know president trying is who we all know him to be and it didn't really matter to me one way or the other people actually knew they'd be actually used present terms name i think we all understand it was talking about yeah ok to take a come back to you in texas you and i had a discussion earlier about the issue of rights and how it might play and how important it might be in the campaign i mentioned this to alan fischer before it was interesting that he invoked charlottesville the you not the right rally and he said that was that was my moment that's when i had to run. yes you know i
6:31 am
think that what it was you know quite a few poignant moments in vice president biden's speech he started an opening speech with a quote by elevator of a very famous and or and black woman civil rights activists he said if you give people the light to paraphrase they will find a way he opened it speech that's what started it speech i think also the moment where he spoke about his conversation in this very private personal moment with george floyd's daughter is and what that minutes and then also reminded us of what has been happening in our country under the leadership of donald trump it's been hatred and divide and racism and he wanted us to he asked us to close our eyes and and to just take ourselves back to that horrific night in charlottesville i think all of america was probably just sitting there remembering those images of hate and he reminded us of what what donald trump said about those people that they were
6:32 am
fine very funny people that he said i what vice president biden get is that he showed america that we have a choice now we have a choice in which direction we want to take this country and he reminded us that he is going to be a president for all of america i don't think that you know we can all agree on to say that the current president is one that heals that he represents all of america and so tonight you know vice president biden in my opinion he outlined a great plan and he touched hearts and souls and minds and he actually gave us hope he gave us inspiration i think that americans across the country are feeling the speech they feel heard they feel seen and i think that night a lot of americans saw who you know who this man is who he is as a father he is as a servant leader who he is as an imperative and i think that he connected with many americans and i just quickly to take
6:33 am
a before i go back to michael did he miss anything i know it's only one speech we counted everything in one speech but was there any glaring omission along the way. i think he hit on the major points he needed to hear not he showed but start crying tracks between he and ice he and the current president i think also he spoke to all of the issues that americans are grappling with right now he spoke to his plan to get us out of this global pandemic that has just taking our country just to the right he talked about how he's going to invest in our country to get us back on our the economically he also talked about our standing in the rest of the world and and talked about his ability to to you know make america better standing with our citizens and our fellow countries in the world and i think he hit on a policy point but he also talked about the issues that americans are grappling
