it's a pretty i don't think it can forge narratives all right through the listening post gives you the full picture on a remainder stand the differences and the similarities of cultures across the line so no matter what moves in when to the news and kind of forms that matter to you. this is al-jazeera. 1300 hours g.m.t. here on al-jazeera santa maria welcome to the news hour from afghanistan to mexico to france all over the world the challenges facing students parents and teachers as school restarts during a global pandemic. and
4:01 pm
also after a religious celebration in iraq warnings that hospitals may lose control of rising covert 19 infections. he has no sense of service. no holes in the news presidential candidate joe biden slams donald trump for comments he apparently made mocking us want to the white house says no it's all a hoax and a 3 month state of emergency for some of the worst flooding the country's seen in decades. and sport little massey's not happy back he's staying at barcelona it wants to avoid a legal battle with the club for blocking his departure with a buyout clause of more than $838000000.00. hello everyone we're focusing on education this hour something which has been
4:02 pm
defined as a human right but they stay in the middle of a pandemic has become a source of great division all over the world as a new academic year begins for millions of families and educators are trying to decide how how do you balance going to school while still protecting every one's health. 3 examples for you here france 1st of all 12000000 students returned to classes on choose day but then there was a jump of 9000 infections on friday and for some schools to close again in spain teaches students and parents have been protesting in malaka of a say measures to stop the spread of covert 19 schools across the south just aren't good enough but then you have someone like mexico as well students starting distance classes and communities rallying to fill the gaps at the a tortilla shop in mexico city which is offering amongst the food free internet free books and tutoring. well we're going to focus this hour on to other countries that is iran and afghanistan now in iran the schools have been closed since march
4:03 pm
and the government's made it clear they want to reopen in what are considered high risk districts we'll have that report shortly we're starting though with this from charlotte bellus on how afghan teachers are focusing on catching up particularly their female students on their literacy. after 5 months school is back across afghanistan with many more rules and public schools like he'd only students in the last 2 years can return they must wear masks sit apart and hand sanitizer on the table here they used to be $45.00 goes to a class now it's kept at half that what they will that. we are very hopeful after 5 months of closure we will try our best to get these classes back on track with their curriculum so their school year can be saved we have professional teachers and i are very confident they will be able to catch them up. many students have tried to learn from home most read books and watched lessons on t.v.
4:04 pm
by the ministry of education only 20 percent of afghans have access to the into news so online learning was difficult for meaning. and 17 year old shabnam says she's happy to return to school but is worried about exposing the family to the virus i think it's good if we are following the instructions that 1st both of us has given us a for not following in that it's dangerous for every student to come to school and to study i think helped us more important study. coronavirus has been widespread in afghanistan the country has officially recorded 38000 positive cases but a sample antibody test of the population found one 3rd of afghans have had coronavirus that's 10000000 people. shared names family has been vigilant staying home taking vitamins and eating move fruits and vegetables. we were
4:05 pm
a lot about shabnam as most of the students do not follow the health guidelines we advise her to wash her hands use a mask and social distance we were a lot about her getting infected coronavirus is a serious disease and the school is a big gathering place. ok the stuff we consume to feel compelled to continue my fam is also worried about me that i'm coming here to teach my students but this holy job we have to come on we have to teach our students so far they take as many notions as possible for them and their students' education must go on a shell of dallas. right so that's a case study number one afghanistan we're going to look at iran now and that tussle between the government in the provinces over how and when schools should reopen there is a bank with more. temperature checks a disinfectant tunnel. and social distancing is what met students returning to
4:06 pm
school into iran journalists were invited to this school to see iran safety measures president has and rouhani addressed the flag waving children by a video link. today the education starts it means education doesn't shut down even under the toughest conditions it is the teacher's responsibility to remove anxiety from the minds of students and their families anxiety will prevent students from beginning the educational here. some in the country have questioned the government's handling of the pandemic that wrong is still considered under iran's red zone for krone virus infections and despite measures put in place in schools like this one some parents are still reluctant to send their children back into school and nick out of the take ask i have lots of stress and i'm worried one of my son says allergies and i disagree with him attending school in this situation i think i won't let him go to school because his health is a priority over education their kids they touch everything and then they touch
4:07 pm
their faces the children however seemed less concerned. i think it's good to come to school with stayed at home for nearly half the year and studied online yes there are concerns about the virus at school but we should just observe the health protocols class time to have been reduced to 35 minutes students attend on alternate days and an online learning occasion has been introduced. the education minister to try to reassure parents. the health of students is our most important concern we don't want to put students' health at risk we trust the health ministry has had great experience fighting the virus we hope families also trust us and will be sure that the education sector is following health protocols. more than 100 people a day a dying from the coronavirus in iran and about 2000 are becoming infected the government may want to return to normality but it still looks it has a grip of the spread of the virus said big al jazeera to her on what we're off to
4:08 pm
carefully in wales now to speak to deb barrie child development specialist and a senior advisor for emergency response that save the children nice to have you with a step. emergency response it actually is an emergency in many ways isn't it the way that children have to adapt to this it all happened very quickly when the schools initially shut down and now all this uncertainty about whether they'll reopen what's your take on how children have been affected already leading up to this point where we're trying to reopen. right and as we look around the world at the synopsis we're actually in just over $100.00 countries around the world and talking to our staff on the ground we're seeing these really common things happening to children you know they've had lots of different experiences over the last few months where they have been taken out of school they quickly haven't had a chance to say goodbye to friends they've lost out on many of those things the real life moments that children will never forget things like their problems their
4:09 pm
exam results in being able to do their final concepts all of those things which have milestones many important milestones children have now been taken away from them and now expected to go back to school and we're seeing around the world children saying to their parents saying to their friend here's my concerns here's what i'm really worried about and those concerns really very quite considerably for some children it's about catching up with schoolwork some of them is well my friends we know me now will we be able to share those same experiences and other children it is the real the at of you know will i bring this home to family member it's you know something to interrupt you i generally take your point that you were saying about events which children are missing out on a particularly older children they could be actually an academic knock on that we see in a few years of kids who missed their final exams and that younger children though i
4:10 pm
can be pretty resilient and i certainly seem anecdotally a lot of kids have dealt with the idea of online learning and not being at school pretty well kids it's a quite robust sometimes. absolutely and i think you know one of the things that we've definitely seen around the world is that you know in some countries we actually have more children now being able to access some of the educational kits that are out there because up to this point they have been working on the streets they have had to go work out in the fields and now as we've been preparing some of our. facilities we're actually able to reach more children who are out of school but children in developing countries like the u.k. the rest of europe you know they are being really resilient and i think we have to give credit to these children and to the parents who have worked so hard trying to build an environment for them but i love the creativity that some of the children have done during lockdown you know these younger children who have really embraced it and so much what i think we all see in the news you know young children who have decided to go out and find what is a little boy
4:11 pm
a few months ago given who raised thousands and thousands for the n.h.s. as a 5 year old just being an inspiration to so many other children and i know firsthand i've got nice nephews you know who have gone out of their way to do soon gets into link into the communities during this time you're thinking you know we want to be in care we do more that we can learn a lot from that can't wait so our focus today there deb is about the reopening of schools now there is no one size fits all solution here for any country for any part of the world for any type of so many variations that said i want your take on the idea of children going back to school in these conditions wearing masks having to socially distance some kids in some days some kids not in the other days is it a lot for them to take in is it damaging the school experience. it is an opportunistic in but i think you're going back to what you said earlier on children are really was the most important part of all of this is having these conversations openly with your children really early on find out from them what is it that you're
4:12 pm
most concerned about right now and then try and think it really practical ways for those solutions to be so what is it a you need to have in place so talking to friends who got their children who are preparing in different parts of the world you know for some of them it's still about getting your child excited to have the right kind of backpack and the stationery to go back to school so they have that sense of well see the other children's about you know what is you know practice at home wearing the mask what does it mean for you to wear the mask how are you going to be able to wash your hands if there's not much water around how do you go away or how do you nicely tell your friends to also keep socially distancing and you've got a whole play this really early on with young children about you know how am i going to interact my friends how my if i have a concern when i come home at the end of the day how can i talk to my child more about it and that is going to be crucial that every day feeling and then just changing some of the language that we use as well you know even as adults if we're
4:13 pm
really worried about them going back trying to hold back some of that the air so that we're not putting it on to them right and i think you know really looking to us but guidance so you know those traditions that you happen to go to the 1st day of school you know try and keep those traditions because those are going to be so important for the child to have that sense of normalcy great advice there from barry with save the children joining us from wales today thank you deb thank you some other coronavirus news for you infections which are now past 4000000 in india rafter registering another record on saturday was 86000 this time the 3rd country to pass the 4000000 mark after the u.s. and brazil the indian government's pushing to reopen businesses to revive a shrinking economy. and authorities in iraq are warning hospitals may lose control of the outbreak within days more than 5000 new infections were announced on saturday which is the highest rise yet their iraq's hospitals have suffered those
4:14 pm
well from years of conflict and inadequate funding and neglect baris in baghdad for us this saturday spoke to a little while ago you've got some new figures apparently from the iraqis. yes the health ministry has announced the latest figures and in the past 24 hours across the country more than 4644 cases were reported and 63 people have died as a result of covert 1000 these numbers are just so the latest increases that we've seen after the commemoration of the shore and that is the holy day that show muslims get themselves to karbala in southern iraq to commemorate the death of a man who say it was the prophet of the is the grandson of the late prophet this is a very important day and authorities in iraq did not choose to close the shrine of imam hussein in karbala and as a result we're seeing an increase in cases across the country this something that's
4:15 pm
very significant because the numbers that we're seeing are actually not accurate in a completely completely because we're hearing that many people are just not getting tested they're not going into hospitals and that with hospitals themselves of one of the main areas where people are becoming infected just over the past 48 hours over 300 people in baghdad alone were infected with cobra 19 in hospitals or medical facilities so there is a lot of concern that in the days ahead the numbers will actually continue to go up so the iraqis talking about a potential loss of control over the coronavirus pretty serious and what are they actually doing to try to prevent it. well there are a number of measures in place that have been in place for a while there is a partial curfew in baghdad from 10 pm to 5 am only 25 percent of government employees are going into the office there is a rule of we have to wear masks in public but it's not enforced very strictly i
4:16 pm
have to say just driving around coming into work i could see about maybe 40 percent of the population wearing masks in public commenee of the street vendors and. street shops are open across the city there is a concern that the authorities haven't been able to enforce the rules that they put into place so the economy as a result of a complete lockdown that was in place for 3 months has suffered drastically unemployment has nearly doubled as a result of the pandemic and the lockdown and the people that we see that take to the streets on a daily basis in baghdad to protest unemployment say that they are out of money and they just can't afford to stay home even if there are restrictions so the government is in a very very difficult position but the world health organization warns even for sure that iraq was in a very very precarious position that they had to try and control of the spread of this pandemic at any cost. with the update from baghdad thank you here's what's
4:17 pm
coming up for you on this news hour. violence and arrests in the u.s. city of portland by protests against racism and police brutality and nearing their 100th night. also rescues in beirut still holding out hope of finding survivors are often last month's explosion and sport without action from a record breaking night about that it's a belgian that is with fire and i fire as well at about 10 to the out. for us presidential candidate joe biden is strongly criticize donald donald trump after reports the president mocked america's war dead this came from the atlantic magazine which quotes unnamed sources who say trump has made several offensive comments including the fallen soldiers were quote losers and sockets the associated
4:18 pm
press says it is independently confirmed many of those remarks when my son volunteered enjoy the united states military as the attorney general went to iraq 3 year won the bronze star and other commendations he wasn't a sucker the service men and women he served with particularly those did not come home we're not losers if these statements are true the president should humbly apologize 7 no it was a fake story written by a magazine that was probably not going to be around much longer but it was a totally fake story and that was confirmed by many people who were actually there it was a terrible thing that somebody could say that kind of things and especially to make those that don't work for the military then almost anybody else. reza jordan with
4:19 pm
us now from alexandria virginia to talk about this roseland the the president's controversial comments and whether he said them or not. they can be they can be so many of them and they can pass quite quickly in this case they're not is that just because of the election or is it the nature of these particular comments. i think it's a bit of both come all and that's because what the president has said in essence has been said before during the 2016 presidential campaign donald trump angered a lot of people when he basically dismissed the experience of the former senator and presidential candidate john mccain who was a prisoner of war during the vietnam war the basically said that he didn't like people who were captured on the battlefield and he thought that was more about their lacking character than about how the reality of conflict and certainly
4:20 pm
he also had insulted the family of a soldier who had been killed during the war in iraq so it's not as if donald trump hasn't said these things before but when you talk about going to a place where people have been revering the sacrifice of u.s. forces to help and world war one really for decades the it really does shock the conscience not just of top military leaders and enlisted troops here in the united states but it is also shocking people in europe who have looked to the united states to help them bolster their security and so that's part of the reason why this has taken all the other factor of course is that we're now within 2 months of the presidential election on november 3rd and certainly any mistake that could be made by a presidential candidate certainly the opposition candidate is going to seize on it
4:21 pm
the white house reaction is interesting as well the amount of pushback there has been not just from donald trump but from his surrogates i guess you'd say in the white house even spokeswoman teddi mcinerney who gave a statement i think it was yesterday and then just walked out while the reporters are asking can we ask a question can we ask their defiant with this one. well certainly you have seen this sort of behavior from press officials across the trumpet ministration essentially ignoring reporters in trays that they do their job and stand there and try to answer the questions instead just walking out without so much as a thanks so much you know i'll see you tomorrow but more important than that is who has not been speaking out on behalf of the president it's notable that a number of sitting and former military leaders have not said anything in
4:22 pm
defense of the president if anything what you have been saying in the past 48 hours is a growing number of former military leaders speaking out against what donald trump has said calling him unfit for service among the people who have criticized the president it's only sullenberger you'll remember him as the airline pilot who saved everyone on his own white from drowning in the hudson river a few years ago he went on twitter late night on friday and basically said that the president has shown that he doesn't have the character to be the commander in chief of the u.s. armed forces and that it is important that people vote him out in november this is a comment from someone who has not only described himself as a republican but who has also made a point of not wading into national politics but as a veteran sully sullenberger said he didn't have a choice but to speak out about what he called egregious comments about the
4:23 pm
sacrifice of his fellow troops rosalynn i think we're probably going to be talking more about this in the future and a look fortunately roselyn jordan in alexandria. let's say in the u.s. police in poland of broken up protests as the city mounts almost 100 consecutive nights of demonstrations over this weekend there have been arrests as well of this going on since the death of george floyd in police custody back in may president donald trump dispatched federal agents to portland in july and saying local authorities weren't capable of stopping young risks they were later withdrawn. and in rochester in new york state protests against police brutality of continued into the night dozens of people are seeking justice after the death of black man daniel crude in march he suffocated after being arrested by police officers put a mesh hood over his head and held him down for 2 minutes while he was handcuffed since then 7 officers have been suspended. sudan's government declared
4:24 pm
a 3 month state of emergency because of weeks of floods that have now killed nearly 100 people or ivanov's risen to levels not seen in a century and overall rates of flooding and rain exceed record set in both the 940 s. and 1980 s. 100000 homes have been badly damaged or collapsed entirely and half a 1000000 people are affected and i had a little brother got all our power operated equipment is not a fodder and there's a high possibility they won't operate again needless to say residents are all gripped with fear and panic we have not slept for days that flies and mosquitoes are multiplying in huge numbers cholera may break out at any moment god forbid that's why we've planned an insecticide spring campaign more from him or going in how to know he says the authorities are still trying to figure out exactly why the river nile is rising so much. government officials in sudan are attributing the reasons behind the level of the nile river to multiple factors they say one of them
4:25 pm
is climate change which has resulted in heavy rainfall in the if you can highlands and that was eventually comes down stream in the blue nile through the blue nile which contributes to 80 percent of the nile river now we've seen the banks of the nile flooding with homes destroyed neighborhoods completely submerged in water and we've seen people getting displaced as a result so down the government after declaring a 3 month state of emergency has called an aid organizations to to try to help those affected and those displaced by the floods now the other reasons that meteorologists has resulted in the level in the rise of the 911 the number of bands that have been build on the nile river over the past few years we've got 3 in dams here in sudan we've got one on the sudanese egyptian border the aswan high dam and there is the ground if you can are not on them that is still being built on the if you can high lands. on the top of the if you can highlands the source of the blue

nile river. from floods in sudan to a heat wave in parts of the u.s. evidence here yeah that's right it's the labor day weekend of course c'mon we got this exceptionally dangerous heat wave across the western side of the u.s. terms of california i think of that of california steaming actually it's that nasty take a look at the satellite picture a very little cloud showing up we've got a few storms just around the deep south but elsewhere it is dr we've got high pressure in charge that is a lid on the atmosphere it prevents the clouds from developing so we are going to see largely clear skies most authority of the the clear skies are going to be across central and eastern parts for the time being a high pressure over towards the west that's not a bad thing actually in terms of the wildfires because at least here it means that the winds are not going to be fanning those flames 43 celsius in l.a. on saturday afternoon looking the similar temperatures you go on into sunday the temperatures should be about 2829 at this time of year so we are well above the

seasonal average just to your attention to denver 37 celsius here that could be record breaking as well along with the late sort of temperature 31 celsius in denver as we go on into monday we flip in the numbers around for l.a. by this date 34 degrees but notice in colder red just pushing in across the mountain states sinking a little further southwards and by the time we come to choose day well then we go from 31 to around 5 degrees celsius so it's very much a case of going from shorts and t. shirt so hat scarf and woody gloves couple seasons one day thank you have it in folks with your international weather now a gas pipeline has exploded in bangladesh killing at least 16 people this was near a mosque just outside the capital dhaka while worshippers were finishing their prayers dozens were injured with critical burns and firefighters are now investigating the chords. and so now because navy is towed an oil supertanker this is the one that was on fire off its eastern coast that toted

a reeses been gripped by the anti-government protests ever since last month's disputed presidential election because it denies opposition accusations that he rigged the polls to stay in office he in turn accuses western governments of conspiring against him. in lebanon the search continues for a possible survivor beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in beirut's highly sensitive equipment detected signs of breathing rescuers have so far dug 3 tunnels to the spot where the signs of life were picked up but nothing's been found so far search going on live pictures from beirut and our correspondent. who's been near that search area. day 3 of the search operation a body has not been found neither has a survivor there was hope but what we understand from engineers is that. the possibility of finding someone alive is really unlikely it's been 32 days and it's not just that this is the machines that the teams from chile used to detect signs
4:35 pm
of life they detected it in the 1st group the 2nd group as well as the stairwell they didn't find anybody there there's only one place left and that is the 3rd roof but there is no sign of life there there is a possibility that there could be a dead body but no sign of life according to this engineer he said the dog because it was a dog really that alerted the teams to starts the search off operations gave people hope but at the same time what the dog did really was expose a dysfunctional system really in reference to how the lebanese authorities the state didn't even search this building in this neighborhood which was badly damaged during that massive explosion on august the force the no there's not. the machine the dogs the machine and the. ball is in the get it 1st or 2nd group so there was we had nothing there nevertheless will go to the. forward

capability and remove the 3rd and this dog gave us hope but it also made fun of all the system. an agreement between serbia and kosovo to work on their economic times left movement on political normalization on hold the deal was brokered by the u.s. still being hailed as a major breakthrough by donald trump cost of also said it will build relations with israel while serbia will move its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem kosova declared its independence in 2008 that though is not recognized by serbia. resolve for problems there are still a lot of differences between us but this is a huge step forward we didn't speak about many items that we signed to do for us it's very important if we are going to be unified economical and tell us from balkans which will bring us to the real economic result for the benefit and for the sake of all of people. absolutely this is
4:37 pm
a great moment for kosovo and for the region i think we need a huge step forward for normalization of relations that should lead eventually to mutually beneficial between the 2 countries we are fully committed to work together to improve people's lives to treat new jobs in the region correspondence from al-jazeera balkans on both sides costs of owning a moment with. the 1st in belgrade and while the president is happy with the deal opponents at home a skeptical position here said that this document is not in the interest of serbia and it won't benefit serbia but it also just benefits president tran puring his political campaign elections because it was mentioned that serbia will move its embassy from jerusalem to israel in kosovo we'll have some political ties with israel palestinian ambassador here in belgrade said that if serbia do saw that it
4:38 pm
will be violation not just a violation of international law but elation of friendship that between syria and palestine. the agreement reached yesterday at the white house is considered by a course of officials as historical and a huge step towards mutual recognition between kosovo and serbia however many in kosovo do not share that has them kosovo and serbia have been talking about normalizing their relations for close to a decade now for 4 european union has been mediating most talks and during all those years some 30 agreements were reached however many were not fully implemented some of those on phil commitments were transferred into the agreement signed yesterday at the white house in the hope that they will be implemented before the meeting of all prime minister had the negotiations at the white house are all about
4:39 pm
mutual recognition between course of all and serbia now that hasn't happened so there is criticism from opposition for knock the live ring for the main achievement from these talks here in kosovo is considered mutual recognition of course of all with israel because of always recognized by more than 100 countries including european including united states and most of european countries and every new recognition is considered as accomplishment now people living in north carolina in the us will become the 1st to vote in november election by mail at least $600000.00 ballots are being sent out to those who requested them because postal voting is itself become an electoral battleground with donald trump claiming without evidence that it's vulnerable to fraud earlier this week even urged people to try voting twice to test security measures that would be very much illegal. the u.s. has announced sanctions against venezuelan election officials ahead of
