a call to reports from beirut. it's been almost a month since most the for a deal was designated prime minister his job was to form a government independent of party loyalists after the previous cabinet resigned following the devastating explosion at the port of beirut last month it's not easy in lebanon where the same political elite accused of pushing the country to near bankruptcy have been in power for decades i realize that the agreement on the basis i accepted this national mission during this difficult time of lebanon's history no longer exists as well as there the government line up with the specific ations that i put failed. mission was supported by france which has been leading international efforts to resolve lebanon's multiple crises by bringing change to the leadership president in mind where macross said during his 2nd visit after the port blast that lebanese politicians agreed to form a cabinet by mid september see an already. fragile skepticism with this class

and was very much a final so i would be surprised if the french choose to give that same strategy another shot the armor movement and hezbollah backed by iran have been blamed for standing in the way of a deal by insisting on naming she are muslim representation in government a 1000000 hezbollah are part of the so-called march 8th alliance that currently control political power in the sectarian based system of government here the shia parties feel the other camp the march 14th alliance is carrying else a political coup against the results of the last election. but others say their loyalty to iran brings lebanon into the heart of the us iranian rivalry there are squeezed cornered instead of being them through his will on the border. throwers near the borders of iran so basically yes that is in the core of the.

iranian conflict much is in. doubt for a country where more than 50 percent of its 5000000 people are officially poor the reforms that mounted by the international community to unlock financial assistance among them fighting corruption and it's likely to hurt to implicate the political class that is why leaders resisted for years micron's that road map however doesn't just set deadlines it warns a possible consequences this is a broken and broken nation not even the threat of western sanctions pushed politicians who are stronger than the state to give up power and agree to change some say the french initiative to save lebanon has died others say it can still be revived but the lebanese president did warn the country was going to hell if a government is not formed center for their beirut investigators have issued arrest warrants for members of the mexican military who could be linked to the

disappearance of dozens of students in 2014 the mexican president has been meeting the families of the 43 students the group who were abducted by local police in the town of wallace 6 years ago they were then reportedly turned over to a gang that's believed to have killed them and burned their bodies on the raw polo joins us live from mexico city the fact that this meeting was happening the toll was pretty important but give us the context around this latest announcement. this is now the 3rd time the mexican president under this model up is what other meets with the families of the 43 missing students from evil in mexico and there was an expectation that we would hear an update today a significant update the ongoing investigation launched by the presidential administration and mexico what we're learning is of 3 sorry 34 new arrest warrants that have been issued against state and federal officials in mexico in the state of
9:06 pm
ghetto specifically members of the security forces and also something that is unprecedented is the issue of an arrest warrant for at least one federal police officer in connection to the disappearance of these $43.00 students making a total of 70 arrest warrants that have been issued since the start of this new investigation and really the this meeting this now 3rd meeting between the president and the family members of the missing students carries a lot of significance behind because it does symbolize a new path being forged in the relationship that families of missing persons have with the federal government here in here in mexico the family members of the 43 missing students not only met with the mexican president they met with the attorney general of the country they met with the head of mexico's human rights commission so it is significant every new piece of evidence every new discovery that's announced every new arrest warrant that is issued helps to up end and discredit this official government narrative that existed within the past presidential
9:07 pm
administration there's also significance to this meeting given that today precisely is the 6th anniversary of the disappearance of these students so apart from this this this meeting that took place with a high level government officials there will also be events this afternoon here in mexico city commemorating that that anniversary. this case has always been shining a light to focus on the level of force disappearances that there are in mexico give us an indication of what the situation is now and whether or not it's actually changed over the last 6 years and so. the case of the 43 missing students is very emblematic of mexico's problem with forced disappearances unfortunately and this is something that that you that we've heard here in mexico since the start of the corona virus outbreak but the one thing that hasn't changed since the start of the pandemic is the level of violence there's a sex spectator that mexico is going to once again shatter historical records for
9:08 pm
homicides at the end of 200-2020 but the the issue of kidnappings force disappearances child trafficking these are these are problems that are not unique to mexico but they are massive problems very large scale problems in this country and by all accounts there is an expectation that this is that these are problems that are only going to continue to get worse we should note however that yesterday when we were at a vigil with one of the mothers of the missing $43.00 students she told us that while it is an excruciating pain to have to wait 6 years for the government to to start a new investigation into the disappearance of her son she says that the fact that the government the federal government is taking the time to meet with the families of missing persons is a huge step forward and it creates a lot of hope for a lot of people that this issue of forced disappearances nationwide in mexico is something that's at least beginning to get better thanks very much indeed does

money joining us live from mexico city. protesters and brother who's on to giving up their demands for the resignation of president alexander lukashenko police have arrested dozens of people in the capital minsk weekend demonstrations have been held since the cold won last month's election which the opposition say was rigged he held a surprise inauguration ceremony a few days ago several countries have said they won't recognize his presidency malaysia's prime minister has had a significant boost to his position enough to risk ruling alliance with a majority in this state election the election in sabah is the 1st since most seen took power in a political coup in february his party and its allies have held a thin majority in parliament since then you have seen had been facing pressure to hold snap elections to secure a stronger mandate the president says he'll name his pick to be the new u.s. supreme court justice on saturday afternoon american media reporting it's likely to
9:10 pm
be a meek only ballots a chicago judge considered a conservative shall fill the spot left vacant by roof later ginsburg who died last week and he gallacher is joining us live from miami what more do we know about the choices that are on the list for donald trump. well really it comes down to 2 candidates one being judged the other one being barbara let go who is a judge in miami but it looks like judge about it will be the pick within the last hour we've seen pictures of her leaving home with her husband and 7 children presumably to go meet with the president and the rose garden in less than 3 hours time until that is confirmed we can't say that she will be the next supremes justice but we know that she is a devout catholic a solid conservative someone that worked for justice antonin scalia who was for many decades a staunch conservative and a catholic as well on the supremes court so if she is nominated it's
9:11 pm
a very contentious issue this close to the presidential election it will sway the power of the supremes called the most powerful courtly united states to a $6.00 to $3.00 majority in favor of conservative judges so for president donald trump this is a huge victory if you can get it through any seems to have the votes of the moments the democratic party are extremely worried about this because it is a job for life and at the age of $48.00 judge barrett would presumably sit on the supremes court for decades to come and just talk us through what the impact of having a conservative dominated supreme court would be particularly of course when it comes to the election but also for us society as a whole. i mean this is the most powerful court and a lot of this is the court that for instance voted in favor of gay marriage they are extremely powerful very important cases go before the supreme court judges are you talking about things like health care particularly the affordable care act
9:12 pm
which could get removed if she is appointed to the supremes you're also talking about 2nd amendment rights gun control and the ever thorny issue of abortion roe v wade was established in 1973 giving women the lead. all right to get a safe abortion i but as a staunch catholic judge if she is nominated if she is confirmed i could possibly overturn that so there is a lot at stake for the entire country a divided country of course but the democratic party essentially can't do much about this because they don't control the house or congress president on trial seems to have the support of the republican party and for them this is a huge win it changes the supremes court for decades to come and ultimately and the upcoming election in november if it is contentious and chomps already said he may not leave office because he doesn't trust mailing back ballots the supremes court is the ultimate decider on who the winner of the next presidential election will be
9:13 pm
if it comes down to that so if she is confirmed before the election in november or even between the election in november and the swearing in of the next president it's a huge win for conservatives in this country and i thank you very much indeed that's in miami. but i want to head in the news including families of factory workers prosecutor joining brazil's dictatorship celebrate a landmark victory against both fire and. they doing everything they can. to force us to say ok just give me the injection this crowd of misinformation conspiracy theories on pandemic deniers in the u.k. . and in sports will hear from the defending french open champion who sounding strangely unhappy the head of this year's event.

a month after he was given the task of forming a government the previous administration resigned following protest about his handling of the beirut port explosion. malaysia's prime minister has had a significant boost to his position after his ruling alliance one a majority in a state election poll in sabah is the 1st since he took power in a political coup in february. investigators in mexico have ordered the arrests of members of state and federal police could be linked to the disappearance of dozens of students and 2014 the president's been missing the relatives of the victims who were abducted and reportedly killed. el salvador's president is very into published documents relating to a massacre by soldiers 39 years ago but says most of the documents have been destroyed since then soldiers backed by the u.s. killed nearly a 1000 people in 1901 it took 31 years for el salvador's government to acknowledge

latin america well germany but who is a professor at george mason university school of policy and government is joining me now by skype from washington thank you very much indeed for giving us your time ma'am is it fair to speculate that the president is prepared to make this offer because there's a good chance that many of those documents have been destroyed by previous governments and the might not be many left well i think it's important to clarify that the president about some of our sort of last year that he would open up the military are right and he has until the states are made up to that promise the judge went on monday in the entry arrange meeting to receive the documents and he was. rejected his entrance into the archives and so today the president has refused to apply what is essentially an international mandate back in 2012 the interim there for a human rights issue

a judgment any he. disappeared or the. earth since the state of the door and found the government was out there responsible for the massacre and or among other things in investigation and prosecution and punishment of those responsible and in order the declassification of government and military archives and that to date has not happened. why is there any indication that just because as you say the president has made this statement that this same thing isn't going to happen again and the military will close its doors and the documents will not be released is there any likelihood do you think that anybody that's related to the people that were caught up in that massacre might get any sort of closure at any point. well i mean it is important to know that the case is on trial. or as you mentioned in your report a moment ago this is the 1st and only. atrocities committed by this savage army
9:34 pm
journey and. to me that meant 80 in 1992 that has climbed to try 18 senior military officials are on trial he's including the former minister of defense who was in fact the head of state 7983. general their son who was extradited parted from the united states 15 after trying to seek asylum here was rejected sent back to initially nothing happened to him because there was an amnesty that was right after the truth commission issued its report in 1002. which shielded any military or police official from. however in the 16th the constitutional court and the door struck down that amnesty paving the way for criminal trials like the animals whatever i mean it is important to note that though this is a really important piece there are dozens of other cases that are being
9:35 pm
investigated but have not yet. so the political when the chief accountability for terrible atrocities committed in the congress of south salvador and someone who are you know remains very lacking and. i know of course playing a key role in this was a as we've talked about the u.s. government because it was training special forces are the least there was a special forces battalion that had been trained by the u.s. it would be fascinated to find out what the u.s. is involvement in all of this was is there any likelihood that we're ever going to get that kind of information. so i mean absolute that is critical so the u.s. not only trained the at the top of what's happening in that carried out this massacre. it also provided and i'm not mistaken and the number is $5000000000.00 over the course of this 12 year civil war in support of
9:36 pm
a brutal military dictatorship would seem then lied to the american people about the nature of that military government. and general plans in training in only one week into our in support. and violent military operation such as you know mostly in that support so i think it's important not only for salvadoran citizens to access u.s. records as well as the samovar military strikes it's also important for american citizens that was taxpayer money that went to fly and that's why we have a right to know who sent that money why did that money and who's responsible just very briefly how to solve the dorrans know adays view this given the fight that happened in 1901 we are a generation or so pos that what is the what has been the policy of the government and salvadorans i'm fully cognizant of just how important this was. that's
9:37 pm
a really good question i mean. when that weren't true when the peace process occurred 91921 of the things both parties the government about salvador and the ethanol and guerilla movement agree she was a truth commission and the truth commission producer or about the human rights abuses that took place in her car and found that that now it's like 85 percent of all human rights abuses that they documented some $75000.00 killings were the responsibility of you know for some smaller number the responsibility of the land and there are a smaller number and it's our. that report has actually been very quiet as our government savage our government since that. day for several decades had a policy of official for getting. deny our government responsibility for human rights abuses and of policy of turning the page let's not look backwards let's focus on
9:38 pm
our and it's true there has many problems persistent poverty stream inequality game violence criminal violence official corruption so there are many problems but that does not mean that you are can simply turn a page and not care who is responsible for he's a toss of it's it's a wrecked and there are lies in the human rights movement locally and internationally have done a lot of work to preserve memory in el salvador and to push for full truth telling and for full accountability it had limited successes so far but the overturning of the atmosphere amnesty law the opening of the envelope there massacre this senior military officials on trial in this case and more recently the conviction in many. a kernel or of the murder of the 6 jesuits their house speaker and his daughter and i 89 i ain't. these are
