through hell you're doing it you're going to have a true gentleman. kuwait's mourns the death of it's a mere 6 supper the state of the country's foreign policy for one in 15 years. the u.n. calls for an immediate end to fighting between azerbaijan and armenia. but 1st see the u.s. and it was a bad tempered and at times chaotic 1st debate between u.s. president donald trump and his democratic challenger joe biden but both men targeted see each other personally buys and called trump a liar and a climb the president some involve question his opponent's intelligence it seems and crashed on the big issues that have dominated the campaign so far including coverts the state of the u.s. economy and race relations and the us president was asked directly by the moderator of the debate to condemn white supremacists this was his response. i would say
7:02 am
almost everything i see is from the left wing not from the right so what do you what do you want what do you sign up willing to do anything i want to see what he has no answer to it say you want to call him what do you want to call him give me a name give me a why is a problem that's unlikely to can die out process on right proud of our lives stand back and stand by but i'll tell you what i'll tell you what somebody has got to do something about anti fair and the left because this is not a right. is a direct this is a left and we have got about right. now a biden said tom's policies have done severe damage to the black community this is a president who has used everything as a dog whistle to try to generate racist hatred racist division this is a man who in fact if you talk about helping african-americans one in 1000 african-americans has been killed because of the cone the coronavirus and if he
7:03 am
doesn't do something quickly by the end of the year one in 500 will have been killed one in 500 african-americans this man this man is that is a savior of african-americans this man cares that all this man's done virtually nothing. well john hendren joins us now live from cleveland ohio the city where the debate was held john many were expecting donald trump to be under pressure over coronaviruses damming personal finances ahead of this debate but he's managed to deflect attention again by refusing to condemn white supremacy. he has done what he does best he is deflected all of the accusation never really answered that question on white supremacy and then turned the tables on joe biden his strategy seemed to be to befuddle biden with constant interruptions playing into the narrative that biden is beyond his prime and biden's strategy seemed to be
7:04 am
to try to be the adult in the room with a plan on coronavirus and on returning civility to government but when trump was not befuddling biden he was making accusations that were designed seemingly to draw the ire of the former vice president such as attacking his son hunter saying he was thrown out of the military for drug use biden said that was untrue but he acknowledged that his son had a drug problem which he has joked with he said this is like many people in america it was a bitterly personal debate. hard to even call a debate a debate it was more like a brawl i've seen street brawls that were more civil than that these are 2 men who have a little love lost for each other ok at john hendren somebody will come back to you for more analysis and just a 2nd the 2nd. more of the highlights of this debate it did get very personal it signs joe biden said that donald trump has
7:05 am
a problem with the truth and told him to shut up cold in a client here's the deal the fact is that everything he said so far is simply a lie i'm not here to call out his lies everybody knows he's a liar. yes is the rational left would you she was about race and who is on your list joe there's always on your right john is i think this is a tactic or do you have to give a little you have ended this segment we're going to move on to the 2nd segment with you guys here is not going to get the final word will it's hard to get any word in with this clown excuse me the state and let me state it no no mr president running after me right i'll. trump of course no one for making personal attacks not just against his opponents but against many people around the world at one point though in this debate he attacked by its intelligence so you said you went to delaware state but you forgot the name of your college you don't go to delaware state you
7:06 am
graduated either the lowest or almost the lowest in your class don't ever use the word smart with me don't ever use that word give me your because you know what there's nothing smart about you joe 47 years you've done this to believe you would have had let me just tell you something you know if you would have had the charge of what i was put through i had closed the greatest economy in the history of our country and by the way now it's being built again to say hey we're going to the economy in the next segment sir ok it's going up fast ok we're going i want to come . back to cleveland and join john hendren and john the schoolyard stuff and the american leadership and democratic ideals and once the envy of the world do you think americans will be proud of their country after watching that debate. absolutely not i've been covering presidential debates for decades now and i have never seen a spectacle like that there have been clever quips bandied back and forth like the
7:07 am
time ronald reagan told a set of jimmy carter that he wouldn't take advantage of his opponent's age and inexperience reagan was then being criticized for being the oldest. president in decades nominated to the u.s. so there's been that kind of thing before there was a vice presidential debate in which lloyd benson said do his opponent dan quayle who keep kept invoking john f. kennedy said i've known john f. kennedy and you are no john kennedy that's about as harsh as it has gotten until tonight and this was really a spectacle americans tell pollsters time and time again that what they want is civility and they want substantive difference between the candidate this one was unlikely to change minds the monmouth poll found that 75 percent of likely voters were watching this debate and that only 3 percent expected that to change minds well i don't think that is likely to change much after the fact we'll see when the
7:08 am
the polls post-debate come out but they're going to be a lot of people who are going to be upset at the kind of antipathy that we saw in that debate and that tends historically to drive voters away from the polls interestingly that's one of donald trump's goals he has been trying through the post office through. criticizing mail in ballots and other things like that to minimize the number of people who come out to the polls because he knows that his voters are committed and they're likely to come in it's historically a fact that democrats republicans tend to be older they tend to be more likely to go to the polls well this debate might well draw people away from the polls there are 2 more debates to come and there's a vice presidential debate there's a little over 30 days $35.00 i believe until that election comes. but america is
7:09 am
divided as it has been in decades and this certainly did very little to help and dean's well let's see if we can try and find some of the substance in the debates and stay with us joe in the rivals i mean they did try to stay on topic president tom defended his handling of the pans i mean a pandemic of course that's killed over 200000 americans trump said his actions saved millions of american lives if we would have listened to you the country would have been left wide open millions of people would have died not 200001 person is too much it's china's fault it should have never happened they stopped it from going in but it was china's fault and by the way when you talk about numbers you don't know how many people died in china you don't know how many people died in russia you don't know how many people died in india didn't exactly give you a straight count just so you understand but if you look at what we've done i closed it and you said he sent a phobic he's a racist and he's in a phobic because you don't relate it closed our country not just letterman says you
7:10 am
didn't think we should have closed country because you thought it was too it was terrible you wouldn't close it for another 2 months by my doing it early in fact dr felt she said president trump saved thousands of lives well the response from donald trump joe biden that since the camera asked people at home about the effects of covert 19 on their families research shut down is because look you folks at home how many of you are up the small and had an empty chair at the kitchen table because someone died a covert how many of you were in a situation where you lost your mom or dad and you couldn't even speak to me had a nurse holding a phone up so you could in fact say goodbye little us far too many people far more people and you would have been by the way slayer own his own his own c.d.c. director says we could lose as many as another 200000 people between now and the end of the year. ok john you listen to the whole debate the whole 90 minutes the
7:11 am
moderates who did try. he did try and introduce different different topics and different themes coronavirus is certainly arguably one of the main driving facts behind the american people's decision that they'll take in the. what do you think viewers will take away from the the coronavirus section of this debates the real kitchen table issues do you think there was anything in that sense it's a sway any undecided field says. well that was where joe biden was at its strongest and was the topic that he wanted to talk about most in this debate and there are reasons for that whole show that voters trust joe biden more in handling the coronavirus they trust trump more in handling the economy that's largely due to the fact that wall street has been remarkably resilient despite all the job losses biden kept coming back to coronavirus whether it was on the economy or something else at one point he said
7:12 am
under this president we've become sicker weaker poorer more divided and more violent that was one of his stronger wrap up comments but when it comes to grown a virus he's trying to sell the message of donald trump simply hasn't done the job and though trump responded to that talking about all of the things his administration does he repeatedly talks about cutting off air travel from china even though tens of thousands of chinese came to the united states after that. and biden's strongest fact in this entire debate was a simple statement that the united states has 4 percent of the world's population in 20 percent of its coronavirus deaths so he was making his strongest argument on coronavirus if there were undecided voters in the middle and i suspect there are a few but not many that might help persuade that trump scold seemed to be to play into this narrative that joe biden is
7:13 am
a man well beyond his prime and so the constant interruptions seem designed to throw by the off his game and it seemed to sometimes what biden was often struggling to come back to the point that he was trying to make and biden has said before this debate that he wanted to make sure he didn't get drawn out by trump in some angry tirade so trump repeatedly seemed to try to do that by bringing up biden's son hunter and ultimately it's a bit of a brawl but there were the moments of substance and coronavirus was definitely one of them the economy was another and there were some exchanges on the law enforcement and race in the kinds of protests that we had here in the united states that drew out substantive remarks in between what was otherwise a street brawl ok john hendren that live from cleveland ohio thank you very much indeed stay with us here on al-jazeera we'll bring you much more on the debates
7:14 am
after so a break we are going to look at it's the contenders have to say about the pandemic and on whether or not they would accept the election results. and that sense of clear skies across much of the middle east how does the polls this time of the beginning to come. dan suddenly feeling much better through the eastern end of the med and nice on shore breeze wanted to basin pieces a cloud further to the north and has some showers within it but as you can see a clear skies across the biggest on we've got the beautiful mountains as the backdrop of cool snow to the mountain top but there is some rain on the way as we go through wednesday it will move out of northern areas of ghana stan and also northern sections of pakistan but in the south really fine enjoy want to scattered showers across into iran and again those shows really working their way across more
7:15 am
northern sections of turkey heavy on thursday to the south temperatures a feeling pretty good $28.00 in beirut and $27.00 in jerusalem still warm them assim of 40 celsius down into doha now central africa thunderstorms and typically this time of year those rains beginning to push again further towards the south very widespread across the maysan big zimbabwe but swan a and also more eastern and central areas of south africa really for the next couple of days but also on thursday well into shows along the south coast he needs temperatures a little bit low 14 in cape town the same in portland both and a what then johannesburg with a hive 19. to he not global community we are i think this conversation elbow but i will tell chris is the worst possible looks like the part of the debate you can jump into the conversation right away when no topic is off the table you're not afraid of anyone
7:16 am
taking power we just call it what. you see is the reach of the richer and the poor getting poorer it's not kill the story the system it's just a look at the system and a modern world this dream on out is there. this is could mind over headlines this hour a bad tempered and at times celtic 1st debate between us president don't trump and his democratic challenger chill. that's taking place in ohio biden called trump a liar and a client the us president question disputes intelligence. in
7:17 am
a discussion on race relations trump fail to condemn point supremacy as some target said what he called the radical left. well as we've been mentioning that debates plays rights and chaotic fashion here's moment to give you a sense of just how much we're moving on you didn't take that well as president x. now to be honest it's a very a portrait of you how i see it up that is the answer the question has no you betray you know with a 1000000000 dollars of yeah that really is you have to you know when you're not just through take arguing if you're going to have a true gentleman is i hate to raise my voice but i do you say to me why should i be different than the 2 of you. well donald trump he's the occasion again to question the supports the ballots in the members election which he maintains will result in widespread votes difference this is going to be a fraud like you've never seen the other thing it's nice on november 3rd you're watching and you see who won the election and i think we're going to do well because people are really happy with the job we've done but you know what we won't
7:18 am
know we might not know for months because these ballots are going to be all over joe biden said he'll accept the results of the votes in the vendor he has no idea what he's talking about here's the deal the fact is i will accept it and he will to you know why because once the winner is declared after all the all the ballots are counted all the votes are counted that would be the end of it that would be the end of it and if it's me in fact for it was it was not me i'll support the outcome and i'll be a president not just for the democrats i'll be a president for democrats and republicans let's get more analysis on this and bring in barbara perry she's director of presidential studies university of virginia virginia sorry joins us now live from charlottesville you're the director of presidential studies presidential would you say that debate was. the scale of 0 to 10 with 10 most presidential i'd give but it was not very
7:19 am
presidential. but i have to say that the incumbent was a little more ferocious and a little bit less presidential perhaps than the former vice president but it was it was not. it was not the best hour for the united states and its democracy do you think it will change anything because the electorate in the united states is very very polarized at the moment everybody is hunkered down and there supporters of donald trump are saying on social media he did an amazing job supporters of joe biden are saying that he does in the maze and job i mean will this change minds or is there anybody left to to convince. well one does wonder polarization aside after our elongated system. mazing primaries for the democratic side and almost 4 years of donald trump how
7:20 am
a voter could not have made up his or her mind but having said that the polls are showing somewhere between 6 and 10 percent of the electorate say they are still undecided or at least they were going into tonight's debate so if that's true the question will be will this have swayed people to one side or the other what let's wait people to pick a 3rd party or a minor party candidate or a write in a candidate or will they just stay home well will they be so turned off by this process that they throw up their hands and say i'm not going to vote and how likely do you think that is that people will stay away from the polls because that can have an impact on the eventually come of this race. well it certainly can especially in those crucial states 6 to 10 states that will swing the electoral college to one side or the other so it will have an impact i'm sad to report that the united states rarely gets over 60 percent of those eligible to vote to come out
7:21 am
and vote and it has been more in the 50 percent range so people have not taken advantage of the freedoms that we have had here it remains to be seen again it may be that people are so turned off by the system and so turned off by 247 media and social media that it's in addition to the fact that we have a president who is criticizing the very system that brought him to power and says that he won't believe the next election and you know it is rigged and that it's going to be illegitimate that does not help give people faith and in the system and call them to to to the polls and terms of how the candidates performs certainly expectations of joe biden's abilities were done played to the extent that we had people accusing him of having out simers he basically just needed to stand upright for 90 minutes to exceed expectations of president trump he needed a distraction coming into this debate because he has record was coming under fire
7:22 am
from all sides not just on covert but also his personal finances from that devastating investigation by the new york times do you think trump managed to get the distraction and the boost that he needs to move on from what's been a fairly torrid week of bad coverage for him. well yes i was surprised that biden didn't attempt to make more of that story he didn't try to get in the president only paid $750.00 a for it is national taxes federal taxes to the i.r.s. and chris matthews or to me chris wallace was asking that question as well as well as the fact that the president had not paid any federal taxes according to the reports 10 out of the last 15 years so i was surprised that biden didn't go after him more on that but i think you're right that the goal of the president tonight
7:23 am
was to create distraction both distraction on stage for biden to throw him off his game and to create a distraction from this as you say horrid week that he has had particularly about not only that he has paid virtually no taxes when most americans do pay taxes who make a lot less money than he does but also to counter the the narrative that he has created that he's a brilliant businessman and then he has made millions and millions of dollars that is also countered by the new york times report and again i'm surprised that biden didn't go after him on that. barbara part of we're out of time to thank you so much for bringing us your thoughts and analysis barbara perry the director of presidential studies at the university of virginia thank you so let's bring you some other news now and kuwait begun 40 days of mourning to honor the death of that samir 91 year old. group the gulf arab states since 2006 before that he steered kuwait's foreign policy from 150 years as foreign
