was diagnosed with conditions got slightly washed he was taken to hospital. but the dead things deteriorated for him and obviously people will be hoping that doesn't happen to president trump. but he deteriorates to the extent where he had to be put into i didn't just coma and was in intensive care for some considerable time mike pence will no be in stand by there will be senior figures from the administration and also from the military who will be taking the far steps to make sure that there is a succession in power not only will mike pence be approached but also none see. palosi who is the speaker of the house of representatives she would be 2nd in line to the presidency i'd be me also take the step of a left wing the president of the senate pro tem the most senior member of the senate who is republican chuck grassley from iowa so all of them will be aware that the president has gone to hospital and that there is a line of succession if you go back to the last time that there was
1:31 am
a high profile hospitalization of the president that would have been ronald reagan when he was shot. by john brinkley. there was he signed a bit of paper that gave power to george h.w. bush never walker bush of course was his vice president there was an issue after that when his chief of staff alexander haig appeared in the briefing room to give an update on the president's condition when asked who was in charge he said i'm in charge that caused a bit of a constitutional crisis because he has no role to play he wasn't in charge it was the vice president so the lines of demarcation will be very clearly marked that if for any reason the president has to undergo a general anesthetic or be put into any sort of. coma medicated coma and there is no suggestion that it's close to that at the moment you saw walking out to the helicopter then mike pence takes charge and if anything happens to mike pence 90. lucy would be the next one to go out and we are saying
1:32 am
and actually allan we're just seeing president trump disembarking now for medical care again he's doing this on a did and he is yes striding towards the the walter reed medical facility of course it didn't take very long did it for the helicopter to land because as you were saying it's very close to the white house just 10 minutes by helicopter but the. president says the the statement we have from the white house is saying that he has a presidential suite there that you would be able to work out of the hospital and certainly the pictures the images that we're seeing of the president right now he has been able to walk alone to the helicopter aboard the helicopter and now we see him self being able to leave the helicopter so perhaps that will be some reassurance that the coronavirus symptoms have not developed any little deteriorated but the symptoms on mild and of course you were learning that the
1:33 am
president is. it seems that he has a thing and the white house saying that this is a caution. and please bear in mind marion just because we are a month away from a presidential election the fact that the president walked to the helicopter and walked out of the helicopter to go into. the hospital it's a political statement he's saying look i may have this virus but i am strong i am well enough to make sure that i can walk under my own steam. he may well. as in a lot of hospitals once you walk through the door they put you in a wheelchair he may well that may well happen to the president here but this is also a political statement and a sign to his supporters around the country that although he is covered here is in reasonable condition and perhaps while there will be some concern and someone
1:34 am
people shouldn't overly wordy but of course his condition will be monitored over the next 4872 hours to see whether or not his condition gets much wash but we were absolutely spot on i said it would take about 10 minutes. it said he would probably arrive here about $630.00 local time and that's exactly when he landed a very short helicopter ride all the way but just just borders. the border between maryland and and d.c. just in on the middle inside and that is where he will be and where he will be treated over the next few days and members of his family. will be allowed to go to this week but the me choose not to given the they wouldn't want there to be any extra exposure either to them or busy indeed to the president himself. that's right thank you very much for now. following all those developments from the white house and then also we have is keeping
1:35 am
a close eye on the situation as well and as i was saying it's very important that we see the president being able to board off to all the reports that we've had obviously there's a great deal of concern about the deterioration of his symptoms whether it had moved from milder symptoms to perhaps a condition that is more severe very important that just weeks out from the election the public are able to see the president himself boarding the helicopter without any help and then disembarking so that very much as a political statement is that going to is that going to reassure the people. well it will for a short time because again the fact that the president is at the walter reed medical center suggests that the prognosis might be worse than we've been led on we were we've been told that the president just has some good t. and a fever those 2 sentences just didn't seem to be enough to warrant a hell of a poor ride to the walter reed medical facility so i think it's some point the
1:36 am
trump administration would be wise to give an update on the president's condition remember when we learned about this to the markets futures actually take didn't so we're talking about the president of the united states the commander in chief and there are those who will you know want to know more about his health or 'd about his condition he controls 'd. a large a vast bureaucracy the military of course there's an election there's so much happening right now and now more than never transparency and information are what the american people want and need at this time and there has been concern about whether there's been a lack of transparency and information that's been disclosed about the nature of his condition particularly as we learn of the president suffering from a mild fever just less than 24 hours of the announcement of diagnosis and in
1:37 am
suggesting it isn't actually him lying have contracted the virus and about that the timing of this information being released is not in line with the reality of the condition itself erica do you not also think that precisely because he is a wealthy to because he's the president that the threshold for admitting him into hospital might be lower than it would be for your average person so you know it could still mean that it is just a precaution and that his symptoms are still very mild. well that could be true but again we need to be saying it harry regular updates from someone within the minute and ministration to the the president's prognosis and where things stand. i mean a very we're a nation a nation right now that has lots of questions questions about who was in charge who will be in charge how will the president continue to guide his reelection efforts
1:38 am
will he be able to stand in effect for reelection and so there needs to be someone that's the point of a white house press secretary or your communications director to assuage and to calm a weary nation so at the american people no. one at home that there that there is no reason to be concerned that there are people in charge that things are being handled but right now we're not getting that we're not saying that we're learning piecemeal and again we're talking about and administration who has played fast and loose with the truth and so that of course is going to play in some and to some of the reasons why there is a bit of skepticism behind what we're seeing in more importantly what we're hearing . how could this potentially and back the election and the off to month and the election all that you know it's a few weeks away obviously a great deal can still happen. no that's right but we know that president donald
1:39 am
trump has made a he's made an issue out of the health of his opponent joe biden he has questioned his physical and his mental acuity and now we're seeing a president who is being held ported to the walter reed medical facility because he is contracted a deadly virus we have to remember in this nation more than 200000 people are dead from this virus more than 7000000 people have contracted it it has brought down and in an entire economy and so this is going to be an issue if the president has made this an issue about the fitness of his opponent and his ability to serve surely that's a question that the electorate can turn back on him. is he able to serve and so now this is a question that he will have to in effect answer for himself how relevant is that question to the election in the sense that. you think well in swing states but that
1:40 am
gen when he's speaking as that would be voting for biden all those votes is that would be moving away from trump wouldn't necessarily take that factor into account and his hardcore support is perhaps i wouldn't particularly care. no you're right trumps a base of support is perhaps the most durable we have seen of any president over the last 30 to 40 years there is no president that has enjoyed the base of support that president donald trump does however it simply is not a nuff to actually get him over the finish line. and at a at a time when millions of americans are voting early but also at a time when the president himself is far has found himself behind in the polls both nationally and take a number of battleground states these last 30 days the president was desperately needed to change the narrative change the scope of this election and for
1:41 am
a president who for 6 months has downplayed this virus has talked to the american people as if the virus is of no consequence and now for himself to have contract that this virus this puts this issue front and center and one of donald trump's biggest major strengths has been his ability to change and shape the narrative to his benefit and now we see that narrative has been completely lost and now the president and his team are going to have to confront this issue head on all right eric thank you very much appreciate your appreciate your thoughts on the story and actually a president trump has just wrists released this video message on twitter thanking people for their support. thank you everybody for the tremendous support i'm going to walter reed hospital are he going to hook up but we're going to make sure the
1:42 am
things we're the 1st ladies do or who have so who are thank you very much appreciate it i will do for you thank you. as to chew is in legends the physician professor oregon health and science university joins us from portland by skype as for i'm not sure if you had a chance to look at that footage of president very brief statement thanking everybody. for the support he's obviously able to you know made a point of being able to you know he's standing he's standing up in that video he's not sitting down so it's just as much a political statement is anything else he's trying to project strength i'm just trying to show that he's still in charge of the business of government and is able to work through the virus but also look perhaps yes somewhat pale and fatigued but the fact that he can put out a video like this new one is that suggest to you about the nature of his condition yeah i didn't see it yet i could hear it from where i'm sitting and i mean right
1:43 am
away made some quick clinical observations one is that he doesn't that seem winded at all or out of breath he was speaking both of you yeah he was kind of. the usual tone and tempo that you know that donald trump and so didn't seem to have compromised or what he sounds like. yeah definitely seems to be a message of reassurance that doesn't he's explaining that he's off to walter reed he's thanking everyone for their support also says that the 1st lady is doing very well in that video but i guess it suggests that the the symptoms are still mild. as far as i can tell it also is very short and sometimes you can pull it together for a short period of time you know and then kind of relax and collapse afterwards but just you know from what we can read from that ted bit he certainly sounds. like his
1:44 am
usual self and not somebody who's distressed or having significant respiratory symptoms so those things are researching clinically. what's interesting about the virus is still learning so much about it and even if people and this includes a lot of young people even if they're able to make a full recovery they can be a corner illness that can be long term long lasting effects from the virus that can weaken you in some ways. it can and as i was listening to you speak to the. previous guest about what the impact this has on the the coming campaign and election i was thinking wow this could go in so many different ways because of course we get very focused in on this 10 day isolation or the 14 day quarantine we really think about that 10 to 14 days you need to hold think you know just put everything to a halt and then you can move forward but of course if you move on to get serious disease. worst case scenario you end up in the intensive care unit or on
1:45 am
a ventilator machine or you end up being one of these patients who we call long collars who have unexpected symptoms for many months on end who are extremely fatigued experience a multitude of symptoms it could be that is another route where you become very sick and require among the lessons or you became one of these long hollers there are a lot of different clinical perhaps he could go some of them clearly could go deep into the campaign season and well into the election and beyond speaking of campaign season este we've seen images of president trump and in recent weeks well races the outbreak began of many many months of very little if no social distancing shaking hands and just recently mocking his his rival for the white house for wearing a mosque and what is really striking about the images that we've been seeing from the white house today many people more people than ever wearing moss and of course
1:46 am
president trump himself as he was walking to and from the helicopter wearing a mosque. now you wonder if that's a little bit of a turning point but it's been very disturbing and of course all these images have been a nonstop repeat today on t.v. but these white house events as you know on saturday where there are hugs given. barely a mask in any direction that you can see and and you have to wonder again what was the time course and of course we know that people can be extremely and they can be transmitting disease even well before they develop symptoms or maybe they'll never develop symptoms but are still able to shed viral particles and that's where you know we've talked before about in some ways the president is a special v.i.p. and he's going to get different treatment than ever everyone but in other ways he needs to get the same evidence based treatment as everyone else and where that applies in the context raising i mean i heard that by the campaign heard very late when they were positive tests from the trump campaign we need to go through this as rigorously as we know that contact tracing needs to happen and then hopefully this
1:47 am
investigative process is not stopped while people you know rally around president trouble of course we're worried about him and we want all these pieces of medical information and we're missing him well but at the same time we need to know that that contact tracing effort is starting it's rigorous and we need updates about it because this could be a huge you know he was at a number of events that could be a super spreader event absolutely it really important to keep in mind that while a president trump is one of several world leaders that is contracted the virus there are many hundreds of thousands of people that have been affected and sadly many many lives lost from this virus and it is very important to keep that perspective thank you s. to chew cliche being with us mike hanna is outside walter reed hospital and beth's a maryland do we. not sure if we have well mike hanna or we well ok well we hope to
1:48 am
speak to mike hanna in a bit of course this after president trump arrived at the walter reed medical center information that we have that moment suggests that he has been moved that as a precaution and it is very important that we really the president and his team making a point that you can see him thumbs up at the cameras waving at the cameras walking to the helicopter on a did so clearly a political statement just weeks before the election to show that he is strong and healthy and far and trying to really diminish the possibility of being possibly a temporarily transfer of power to the vice president which is what would happen should the president be incapacitated under the 25th amendment of the u.s. constitution but these are just the images we had a little bit earlier of president trump boarding that a culture and take about 10 minutes to land at walter reed because it is very close it would be a 20 minute drive but perhaps it would be this is
1:49 am
a suggestion is that because of traffic or perhaps just for efficiency he used a helicopter to transport him to the hospital and mike hanna we have him now mike what can you walk me tell us about the situation there was you hearing. well i'm outside the walter reed hospital at present about 15 minutes ago marine one landed right inside the hospital gates president comes emerged from marine one walked down the steps and got into a black car which is driven in towards the hospital complex now that is a blast conflicts within the. a massive hospital indeed media obviously now gathering outside one of the gates of the hospital that the president can't now it is believed is in his specially equipped this week we've heard from his office that he will continue working from this hospital for the next 4 days that is what his
1:50 am
spokespeople are saying president trump now in the walter reed hospital wheeled waiting to hear where the any announcements are coming from his drama about his fate at the moment but as you mentioned we saw that video of him which he tweeted out sure people all getting aboard marine one thanking everybody saying that the 1st lady is fine once again we heard from him but this move will to read hospital is what they describe as out of an abundance of caution but certainly president trump tweeting out that message looking rather tired but actually made a point of walking out of the white house walking onto marine one and then when he got here to walter reed hospital he got marine one and walking into the waiting car and he's now in the hospital itself. and mike what do we know about
1:51 am
where precisely the president will be located in the hospital because of course there is a presidential suite and that would enable him to continue his work. well that is what is stop say that there is a return in for to him at the hospital obviously something of a larger accommodation he starts saying as well but the president will continue to work while he's on the observation now which must be noted that the white house has confirmed as well that the president is on an antibody cocktail regenerate on which is an untested cocktail at this particular point it doesn't know if the approval is still in trials but it has been given to him on what is described as compassionate grounds now the ways in which and i'm said the drugs can be administered to a patient with them being compassionate grounds but the point about this and why mentioning it is because it's an untested drug we were required extra good vision
1:52 am
because obviously the effect of the drug has got to be monitored as early as a virus which is occupying his body at present that's right and that's the whole point of moving him perhaps to this medical facility that even though he has specialist care and he has access to a treatment at the white house that there will be greater resources available to him at walter reed. well in p.d.s. obviously there is medical facilities at the white house but not of the capacity that they would have in a massive military hospital like walter reed all the facilities that you would possibly need are here along with absolutely expert staff who would be present as well but once again to keep on repeating what the white house say they say this is out of an abundance of caution they say that he needs to be monitored closely for
1:53 am
that takes the next 4 days that is a period of time that they are getting for his state here but once again the fact that he's come to a hospital is clearly pointed out that he needs to be monitored more closely even that he could be monitored at the white house and obviously as well the capacity of the hospital to take any further measures should treat conditions deteriorate it's far greater than that would be in the conservatives at the white house so here we are the president now ensconced in the will 3 hospital we are waiting to hear the information from his job about his state at this particular time and what his plans are for the coming days the 4 days they say that he will be spending under observation in the hospital. all right thank you very much mike hanna with the latest there from the walter reed hospital and of course alan fisher has been following developments from the white house where we had seen this video allan of the president trying explaining that he is heading to the hospital really giving
1:54 am
a message of reassurance to people also saying that the 1st lady is doing is doing very well i suppose trying to project an image of strength and to show that this is just a precautionary move. exactly maybe just to to send a message of calm particularly to supporters he did look slightly pill but you would expect that if he's running a fever and not been feeling terribly well all day i don't believe for a minute that while he was self isolating in his residence behind me that he was wearing a suit and tie he probably did that just for the the walk to the helicopter and then his arrival at the white house. walter reed. and so it's really about projecting strength you'll want to sure that. i've got covered not well but not as bad as some people might have you believe and so that is why he
1:55 am
put out the message and then walked to the helicopter with his body man is they call him his personal assistant mark meadows who's this chief of staff he'll arrive at walter reed as he has done and you'll be able to work is if he was sitting in one of the rooms in the white house it is a high tech presidential suite to use access to but it has all reflection been a remarkable 24 hours from being told that the president being told that he's been exposed to any who had covered who tested positive to flying to his. fundraiser in new jersey coming back here saying that he was getting a test finding out that that test was positive to being told this morning that he was in contact with people and was was in good spirits then being told he'd been given a cocktail of drugs that hadn't gone through regulatory approval but had been approved by his doctors that he was running a mild temperature but was again in good spirits and then out of abundance of
1:56 am
caution was being moved to walter reed things often moved fast here in washington they certainly have done over the last 4 years things certainly move fast in the white house but that has been an unusual 24 hours just to make one point it's not unusual for a president to go to walter reed by helicopter he's done it a couple of times by car so in a day that has been very unusual that is perhaps not the most unusual thing but it was unusual that they moved him quite so quickly given that an hour or so before we were told that he was running a mild fever but was in good spirits clearly his condition gave doctors and also himself such concern that they thought it was best that they got him to the hospital as soon as possible. indeed and of course the president's prognosis i mean there could be all possible outcomes because he might be having mild symptoms right now but as we know is the days progress while the symptoms can give way.
1:57 am
more and more severe condition. and here's 74 and if you look at the mortality rates here in the united states for anyone over the age of 75 who contracts covered it's one in 25 know the president might be one of the 24 and i suspect that many people across america no matter what your political affiliation will be seeing a word of prayer to donald trump whether you like him or not he's still the president of the united states so they will want him to recover from this and get back to his family even if they do want to beat him politicly come november and just a quick mention of his son so sorry alan i would just reaching coming out of this but in the program we're going to get much more of you i'm sure the top of the next hour thank you very much allan fisher at the white house one of course this all comes at a crucial time just weeks before the election in the u.s. president trying moving through the walter reed hospital as
