4:05 pm
that while this case has taken so long there should be ways to expedite such you know sensitive terrorism terrorism related cases a lot of especially families that lost their loved ones very reluctant to talk to us on camera still very traumatized arrivals as well but we did speak to one survivor benmore who said that even if this case has taken so long he just hopes that today's decision is going to help you move on. and a friend would drive you to the basement parking of the westgate mall in the heart the 1st blast then got shots for a moment he thought it was a robbery what's in it sometimes it's me lost is where i was hiding there's a security guard was right next to me was shot at the head. and i didn't realize i was injured until. i rescue team right and as i was trying to get up that's when i realized i had been looking. that security guard was among the 67 people killed

4:08 pm
our correspondent in athens so john this was a marathon legal process what 55 and a half years. it's right that a very important aspect is what you mentioned that the golden dawn party has now been convicted as being a criminal. organization and an illegal militia under the guise of a political party all 18 of its members of parliament to came into parliament and 2012 have now been convicted of membership or leadership of that criminal organization and they will spend many years in jail we don't know how many yet because sentencing is to follow in the coming days the important thing is that over this 5 and a half year long trial more than 100 different cases involving armed violence in many cases against migrants or leftists were brought to trial and in
4:09 pm
most cases golden dawn party members or supporters were found guilty that suggests to the judges that these acts were not random they were not entirely spontaneous they were part of a pattern of behavior the courts believes ordered from the top by the party leadership in a way that suggests that the party acted as an organized crime ring the event of course which sparked the investigation of the policy and these cases being brought forward is the merger of the left wing rap artist feast us on september 17th 2013 just a little more than a year after golden dawn 1st came to power after that. and an extremely violent premeditated event i think the authorities were shocked at the extent to which golden dawn was prepared to go in order to intimidate its political opponents and
4:10 pm
that led to its downfall peter john thank you very much. ok let's take a slightly closer look at the 4 crimes the court was ruling on 1st the killing of the left wing powerful lost by sas in 2013 a golden dawn supporter was found guilty along with 15 more accomplices then there was the attempted murder. an immigrant fisherman in $2125.00 golden dawn members convicted there for attacks on communist trade unionists samia for more members were found guilty of the lesser charge of causing bodily harm then there was the charge that the golden dawn party itself was a criminal organization directing paramilitary violence against opponents the court found that it was effectively banning it meant dozens of convictions including 18 former members of parliament and the party leader as well fear fanous exit back to loss is a reader in european politics at the university of surrey in the u.k. he says this ruling may be the end of golden dawn but not of the far right well.

the party the party has been outvoted in parliament anyway and this was kind of a dooming stone let's say to their fate however what it doesn't do is up to that kind of neo fascist tendencies that may exist in greece and may be expressed through different party formations right now the refugee crisis that has been happening around europe and especially in greece and the context of the islands and the refugee camps there has been an important factor in raising issues with immigration and precisely golden dawn was that being on these particular incoming incoming set of immigrants on the islands to perform some of its violent activities now these have not gone away the fact that they will not be sponsored necessarily or be initiated by officials of the golden dawn doesn't mean that the

people here say they're fed up with corruption they're concerned about crop losses and only economy they're also. opposition protests are continuing despite the resignation of the prime minister and the promise of a new election but there is growing confusion over who is actually running the country demonstrators have taken control of government buildings and the prime minister has been replaced by an opposition politician he was freed from jail the day before by protesters the uncertainty follows the end moment of sunday's parliamentary elections which many say were rigged. for joins us live now from the

capital bishkek charles if they got the promise of a new election why isn't that enough. or what's. the point of the matter is the heart of the matter is at the moment there is just too many competing voices peter. we saw a sense of unity a couple of days ago amongst the opposition parties that were protesting in the square that were cleared by security forces since then we have now a seriously frank should opposition i'm standing outside the prime minister's office here in. there are thousands of supporters of one man outside waiting for him to arrive and that man is the new prime minister. of the man as you referred to who was freed from jail by his supporters a couple of nights ago serving an 11 and a half year jail sentence for kidnapping now he had his criminal record completely
4:16 pm
wiped clean the last yesterday by the supremes cool's the supremes courts that many people here say is completely illegitimate but the meeting that he is going to be having in the prime minister's office is with a number of other opposition groups that have a serious problem with him becoming the new prime minister the issue seems to be the fact that he was voted to become the country's new prime minister last night in an emergency parliamentary session which the opposition say did not contain enough m.p.'s to legitimize him being voted into power. there have been scenes of chaos in this country now full for 3 days earlier today out on the main square other opposition groups calling for the but the resignation of the president also saying that ultimate was the only legitimate also received in
4:17 pm
this country which is diametrically opposed to what other people think here. interestingly no visible police presence police presence at all on the streets in fact in around the crowds here we have groups of volunteers that have got together . as medics and in recent nights certainly last night we saw them operating on the streets alone trying to prevent looting there doesn't seem to be of the certainly there isn't any kind of central authority seemingly in this country at the moment we haven't heard from the president or well over 24 hours it's going to be very interesting to see what comes out of this meeting if indeed the new prime minister arrives those opposition leaders that i was referring to are already inside and everybody pretty much safe to say 90 percent of the people standing outside here are the powerful supporters no other opposition supporters here so
4:18 pm
that's the fear the fear is that we're beginning to see a standoff between the supporters of the man that has become this country's new prime minister and other opposition groups so yeah another night of tension and uncertainty in bishkek charles thanks very much chance for us live in bishkek. well there was a fierce fighting overnight as armenia and azerbaijan continue their battle over the disputed region of the go on both sides are accusing each other of targeting civilians these are pictures from the armenian side that shows damage from azeri shelling in steffen a kiev's the main city in the corner and this is recently released video showing a missile attack on the as a bush on the 2nd biggest city of gunja the as there is a armenia has launched attacks on several of its main cities resulting in more than 20 civilian deaths the rights group amnesty says there is growing evidence that
4:19 pm
cluster bombs are being used in the conflict cluster bombs are banned by more than 100 nations but not in armenia or azerbaijan the russian president vladimir putin is among those calling for a cease fire despite being a military ally of armenia he has ruled out entering the conflict on their side in the chin them on the cumbria when the us is well known as a member of the collective security treaty organization we have certain commitments with armenia within the streets military actions continue up to now much to our great but they aren't conducted on the territory of armenia concerning fulfillment of our treaty obligations we have always had filled and always will fulfill our commitments within this treaty ok let's talk live to my colleague bernard smith who's in chorus in our media so bernard has there been much fighting during these daylight hours today. peter on the side of nagorno-karabakh state panic was bombarded we're told on other towns
4:20 pm
earlier on today it's a little bit quiet and now the military authorities in a go in a car about say 40 soldiers 45 has been killed in the last. 24 hours or so the bringing the total to $320.00 dead in the last $1011.00 or so days are really high very high level of military casualties as a by john does not and has not released any figures from its side on military casualties but we know of course that fighting there also targets have been is hit in azerbaijan and towns and villages been hit and on the line of contact between the 2 sides that remains very active has been active since the start of this since the start of this fighting on there is still intensive fighting going on between the 2 sides that. the russian president as we were saying just before we came she bernard i mean his right he's reiterating his pledge to all of this security pact that exists between russia and amenia what does that mean
4:21 pm
'd 'd. or bought him a person is essentially saying and he said that the fighting that is going on at the moment is in nagorno-karabakh gone a car back into the internationally recognized as azerbaijani territory putin is reiterating his support for the country the republic of armenia that is not being touched at the moment we would say by azerbaijan putin has a security arrangement arrangement russia has a security arrangement with former some former soviet states including armenia and putin is saying if armenia is threatened we will come to its help the fighting is centered around the go or no karabakh interestingly the president of azerbaijan. he said today that he's not going to return to talks or he will return to talk with armenia only after the acute phase of military conflict is over he said that after
4:22 pm
speaking to putin so that means really there is no indication of a ceasefire again we know already both sides of 7 not looking for one of the not interested one of the moment but ali have whatever those military objectives are he's not going to sit down and talk 'd until he's achieved them and passion jaan again he's also said that our media will only talk when turkey disengage is from this fight and removes what it calls its mercenaries so both sides remain pizza and entrenched positions bennett thanks very much. iran has registered the highest number of deaths from 19 since the outbreak began and 239 people have passed away in the past 24 hours the previous high was in july and 4000 new cases have been confirmed the 2nd day in a row. patni restrictions are being tightened across the country. while coronavirus patients now make up more than 40 percent of intensive care patients in the region

treat or you can use it to create model organisms so that we can specifically test out medicines much more easily more effectively and that kind of thing ok let's pause for the weather here is evidence. oh it's very much a case of the calm before the storm across north america then largely dry and fine for the u.s. but we do have our condell sand notching up across the gulf of mexico and that's what we're going to keep an eye on over the next couple of days then over towards the west rather welcome rainfall making its way towards the west coast we're seeing creasing cloud and rain just spilling in here we could see some useful rainfall as far as the wildfires are concerned back down towards the deep south though this is friday's picture delta making landfall late friday going on into saturday eating tarantula amounts of rainfall up across louisiana into arkansas across the

as a whole mike hanna al-jazeera washington. well as we've mentioned already here in the news of the u.s. president donald trump is facing condemnation for calling off negotiations over a new coronavirus stimulus package talks had been under way with the democrats but the president took to twitter to say he will only pass the bill after he wins the election u.s. stock markets fell by about 2 percent following the news house democrats have passed a $2.00 trillion dollar relief bill on thursday but senator the public hands have rejected it when it counts which in at the concierge abandon our children we had such great provisions in the deal not that they preach at all and went on a path out in january workers need to do for me at this working families in band in our fight to trash the virus which they have ignored and that we. and 8 who are going to hear us ok let's delve into both the big issues to do with coated and
4:33 pm
american politics right now kimberly helka tracking everything for us as usual of course on the news our let's talk about him calling off these negotiations for the the i guess you could call it the relief fund kimberly what's the logic here for him. yeah the logic is that republicans don't see any sort of upside in all of this and that's why they've halted the negotiations when you think about the trillions of dollars that have been spent there is some concern some fiscal conservatism that's taking place here what's really happening is that both sides are counting on winning the election and being able to push through their agenda and so they're digging in their heels you saw nancy pelosi the house speaker she was talking they're kind of lobbying the ball towards republicans blaming them for the breakdown in discussions and republicans are doing the same really i can tell you after covering congress for more than 20 years that they're both guilty a little bit of this that this is not about the american people at this point what
4:34 pm
this is about is political point scoring and winning votes so it's very clear that that is what is happening with respect to the negotiations both sides are taking a gamble hope we know when the u.s. election now in the midst of all of this we should talk about the president's condition very briefly he still continues to tweet. quite vigorously in fact probably the most i've ever seen since covering donald trump and that that's a pretty high bar now in terms of his prognosis we still don't have a clear understanding as risto getting mixed messages from the white house but we do know this is a white house that is in chaos even by trump administration standards we've got the number of infections continuing to rise approaching towards 2 dozen there are people working in full p.p. ear pretty personal protective equipment if they are at work many working at home and still we don't know what how the president is going to do experts say he could
4:35 pm
have a relapse even as he appears somewhat euphoric but many suggest that might be as a result of the therapies that he's taking to treat his infection very quickly looking ahead the president says peter that he's still going to be at that next press. eventually debate that happens on the 15th but his challenger joe biden the democratic presidential nominee says there shouldn't be a debate if the president is still fighting this disease that has claimed so many lives ok let's stay with coronavirus for a 2nd kimberly we will talk of course about the v.p. debate because that's just a couple of days away now i mean coronavirus is successfully stalking the marbled corridors of the white house all the ancillary offices off that campus and now as well the pentagon i noticed this morning 1st thing though hard time that the head of pentagon cyber security is self isolating as well you know cyber war is the next big thing we're always told by the military analysts because that will be how the
4:36 pm
attack quotes the attack happens is this beginning to turn into a national security crisis in the united states because all these people who have access to the launch codes and the buttons they're either sick or they call untying . it's not beginning to be a crisis it is a crisis obviously the military is going to downplay this this is not the message that they want to project to and the official word from the department of defense is that military readiness and operational readiness not affected but i can tell you privately in washington many are even starting to suggest that this may have been somewhat deliberate to try and increase instability in advance of the u.s. election look at we have no proof of that but certainly there is that argument being made given the fact that we have the 2 most powerful symbols of american might. only be in trouble at the moment we've got the pentagon we've got the white
4:37 pm
house the optics of this are disastrous no i can tell you i do have pretty good sources with respect to the cyber concerns and also about election security and the message that continues to be projected is we are ok we're ready but the fact of the matter is is that there are still vulnerabilities and they're not going to broadcast that but at the same time yes this is a crisis ok kimberly very briefly because the v.p. debate what do you think the optics of that will be the 10 when mr pence squares off against. very quickly we know the democrats are going to hammer mike pence with regard to the handling of covert 19 democratic memo is that kamel harris is going to be all pandemic all the time now we know that mike pence is a pretty good debater he should be able to hold his own but very quickly i can tell
4:38 pm
you the polls suggest that kamel harris is going to come out on top in fact 43 percent of americans believe she's going to win this one in salt lake city utah whereas only 37 percent of americans believe that the vice president is going to win this debate can really talk to you soon thank you so much can you help out there in washington now saying with all things us political former 1st lady michelle obama has attacked donald trump in a new video she's accusing him of racism and mishandling with 1000 and she's urging people not to waste the vote if you are a parent like me you're feeling the consequences of this president's failure to take this pandemic seriously from his constant downplaying of the importance of mask and social distancing today more americans have died from this virus than died in the wars in iraq afghanistan vietnam and korea combined take all those lives bravely sacrificed and double it that is
4:39 pm
roughly the scale of this tragedy and our commander in chief sadly has been missing in action ok we'll get more on that we're going to talk now to save his job as do we in woodbridge virginia she is a political commentator and the founder of max black media avis welcome back to the news is it a measure and i'm not editorializing here ok is it a measure of how messy u.s. politics is right now that at this point in the election cycle in your country the former 1st lady decides to go out and put herself out there with the central message. well i think it is factual not editorial to favorite things are messy in the united states right now when it comes to our politics but i also think that the reflection quite frankly of the brilliance of a michelle obama she is not the typical 1st lady she brought to that office level of professional preparedness and brilliance that was pacific
4:40 pm
she herself is an ivy league attorney so she knows how to make a closing argument and though she has not shown a great deal of interest in running for office herself she does very sincerely care for this country and she sees the deterioration that has happened under this administration and i think she just feels a civic responsibility to do everything in her power and order to save this nation from itself in terms of the potential of giving 4 more years to what is quite frankly an unmitigated vaster in the white house right now she did at one point in the televised address speech call it what you will it is she seemed also to implicitly be saying people of color in america are still asking for their
4:41 pm
freedom you know she was a couple of words or a couple of district descriptive terms away from that take a listen one thing this president is really really good at is using fear and confusion and spreading lies to win look i get it but i also feel it as a black woman who has like the overwhelming majority of people of color in this nation done everything in my power to live a life of dignity and service and honesty. the knowledge that any of my fellow americans is more afraid of me then the chaos we are living through right now all that hurts who is she trying to appeal to with this this seems to me that america is so divided you couldn't find any swing voters because
4:42 pm
everyone's been signaling very clearly for months and months now i'm a republican i'm voting for trump i'm a democrat i'm voting for biden in the knowledge i may get camila harris at some point after 234 years you know both both the main candidates they're not young men so this kind of the idea of voting for you know buy one get one free you vote for biden you might get president comma harris in 2 or 3 years time but who she appealing to here. you know we do have very polarized opinions that is absolutely clear but there is a sliver of americans who if not are completely under sided they are not the traditional democratic voter either on the far left or the right so for example you do have those republican voters on the right suburbanites who voted for trump last time and also quote unquote working class who voted for trump
4:43 pm
last time who she's appealing to on the contrary entrance level and she's also signaling to those on the left who last time may have stayed at home because they were frustrated with the options and who are still frustrated today with the level of a press and a heightened level of oppression that people of color and parts black people and other people of color have been feeling in this nation that literally have put our lives in danger and what she's saying is to those on the left don't stay at home this time your vote does indeed have power and you need to come out and vote and to those on the right she's appealing to their conscience and saying is this really the behavior that you want to ratify with your vote i think not so to me she's trying to kill 2 birds with one stone is there perhaps one tiny good saying going on here and could it perhaps be democracies alive and well every opinion poll now
4:44 pm
is saying they are predicting a record turnout perhaps bigger than we've seen since the 2nd world war people they intend to exercise their democratic rights and maybe those people but those are the people that michelle obama is talking to as well. absolutely well i will say this democracy is doing well if we do have a free and fair democratic election and i know that might be shocking to people around the world to hear america going through a moment in which we actually have to question if we will have a free and fair election we know right now that the trumpet ministration has literally hired thousands of lawyers to as we speak already they are challenging in court different provisions that have been put in place to make sure that people can vote by mail which is a safer thing to do during the time of a pandemic we do know that this administration specifically put in place cronies in
