and desperately needed change i have. to be reminded that moment of reckoning racism and police in america. this is al jazeera. hello and welcome i'm peter w. watching the news live from our global headquarters here and coming up in the next 60 minutes you warnings the coronavirus could spiral out of control in germany after a sharp jump in infections. 30 more soldiers are killed in the disputed region of not going to commit attacks from azerbaijan as international mediators prepare to meet in geneva. facing off in the u.s. vice presidential debate harrison mike pence clash over the handling of the

pandemic and america's role in the world. because of donald trump's unilateral approach to foreign policy coupled with his isolation. he pulled out and has made america less safe we stood strong with our allies but we've been demanding. also ahead living in an open prison human rights watch calls for an end to the mass detention of working a refugee in me and mom. and i'm joining. the french open semifinals after a fall set win. in paris. to begin this news with a disturbing trend developing right across europe just before winter hits coronavirus casey. are surging and in some places it is worse than it has ever been
1:02 pm
austria has just recorded its highest number of daily cases ever more than 1200 that's higher than the month of march when the initial wave of infections was at a peak it's the same story in slovakia with over $1000.00 cases a record figure there for one day the united kingdom is having to consider implementing even more cope with 19 restrictions as the 2nd wave there continues to accelerate cases there are rising by about $14000.00 per day the situation in ukraine is looking increasingly dire as a lockdown measures are extended a record $5000.00 people have been diagnosed with the virus in the past 24 hours and in germany there are warnings of the virus spreading uncontrollably with health officials concerned there soon could be 10000 cases every 24 hours over the uk to elicit what the current situation worries me a lot we don't know how things will develop over the next few weeks it's possible
1:03 pm
that we will see more than 10000 new cases a day it's possible that the virus spreads uncontrollably live now to berlin and our correspondent there dominic kane don good morning how are the numbers stacking up there in germany. for weeks the numbers of new infections in this country has been rising steadily but over the course of the past several days that rise has become a surge with on average 2 and a half 1000 new infections announced every day going back as i say several days but it's the latest number more than 40040832 be exact announced by who we just heard there the head of the robert capa institute which is really concerning people the interesting thing to point out in so far as these concerns go is that that number he says 10000 well angela merkel the chancellor of germany was saying
1:04 pm
at one point in in recent days that she feared it would be even greater than that so that gives you a sense that there is a considerable amount of concern right now here in this country that they are struggling to keep control of the corona virus so the infection rates are climbing is the death rate climbing as well. interestingly enough the death rate has not there has not been a parallel. in death rates across germany some states over the past few days have reported a rise in the number of deaths but not consistent with the pattern that was established at the beginning of the pandemic that needs to be said there is also the point to make the germany really hasn't suffered the sorts of death rates that other countries neighboring countries have been suffering as you were saying in your introduction peter the number of infections in other countries dwarfs that that's
1:05 pm
happening here in germany right now similarly with the death rates but the interesting thing is what the german government and indeed state governments remember this is a federal republic with german government is saying about what they want to do about it some people some eminent politicians look to berlin to the city states of berkeley and there is a traffic light warning system in place in this particular city state 3 different criteria which apply the number of intensive care beds and chart taken up by coronavirus patients the reproduction rate of the virus and then the number of infections there are per 100000 residents were right now that traffic light system in place in this city one of them is a green one is that one isn't red which explains why recently we've seen a introduction of harsher restrictions more social distancing mask wearing that sort of thing but not all states agree with the idea of some national traffic light
1:06 pm
system and one final thought the health minister the federal health minister a young man says right now that he does not believe that now is the time for another national lockdown but of course peace they are monitoring the developments very closely and they say they will take further measures if required and briefly briefly don pleas from east to west from slovakia to the u.k. this is being mirrored reflected across the main part of the european union. yes that's the point to make here that germany stands out almost as a place which isn't really as it were suffering the sorts of rises surges death rates infections that other countries have been but you look at the map of europe you see germany in the center and all the ones around us are reporting surges in numbers some of them going into partial lockdown some of them in enforcing kinds of curfews we've seen that in different places you mentioned in the introduction
1:07 pm
austria well the chancellor there sebastian cortes is going to have to wrestle with the fact that the largest number of new infections on any single day has come today what will he do about that because we know that the other 2 at the beginning of the pandemic straight into lockdown and the austrians were priding themselves that they don't been able to reduce the rate down to such a level they could reopen quite quickly will they close again quickly that's the question it's not just in austria as you were saying slovakia poland also poland this morning announcing more than 4000 new infections and we know also to the west that in belgium in certain parts of belgium certainly brussels there are calls for a very tight lockdowns we know also that in the netherlands there has been a surge in numbers and then in france we know that there have indeed been tens of thousands of infections over the different days where rises of infections have been reported but the most important thing from the german perspective is that the death
1:08 pm
rate is not rising in a parallel manner to the rates of new infections don thank you very much tom and kim there reporting live from berlin. at least 30 more soldiers have been killed in fighting over the defense ministry in the disputed region says 358 servicemen have died since fighting with various forces broke out 12 days ago this is the worst violence between armenia and azerbaijan in decades there was more shelling over night. the region's main cities stepanek yet it's forced many to take refuge in underground shelters a local rights group says half the population there has been displaced because of constant attacks from azerbaijan they have been similar accusations from the area side they accuse armenia of targeting population centers civilian deaths have been reported across several regions where hundreds of homes have been destroyed by artillery fire international mediators

a stepping up efforts to stop the conflict with the french the russians and the u.s. representatives all meeting in geneva simcoe sort of joins us live from azerbaijan what's the latest from the situation on the ground. preterists use that as their bridge and has similar accusations for instance this morning we woke up with the news that as several tons of us are bridge on was hit by artilleries and rockets by the iranian forces i mean go down by district by city at the home of a 63 year old. who who was killed this morning when a rocket hits her garden as you can see out of the window the rocket hits her garden and the glass is all over for broken the fragments to the hit the walls and it's everywhere. i was living alone as an old lady she lost her husband 5
1:10 pm
years ago and they have no children and when we arrived here we learned from their relatives that she was hit by the fragments and broken glass particles with which hits her chest then they found her her relatives found her lying on the ground you can see the blood actually her sisters put some artificial roses just to to honor her memory she was hit in the early morning she had to be seized and all those fragments had her neck and chest and she was found that on the floor they say that she has been living by herself for the last 5 years after her husband was killed and she she was sending everything alone but there were so there were 2 rockets that hit this area and after the 1st rocket probably she was trying to get oh that's why if she had the socks her relatives say she was trying to get out but
1:11 pm
she couldn't manage it and this is how her relatives family members found her and her other relatives are having a mourning in her sister's house so then thank you very much. lots more still to come for you here on the news hour including a warning about the possible spread a coronavirus across water form syria the u.n. says the numbers are much higher than those being reported. tens of thousands running across indonesia against all they say will workers and the environment. and it's a record breaking night on the track in spain joe will be here with that plus all the other international sports news in about 30 minutes. the u.s. vice president mike pence and his democratic challenger call a heroes of squared off over the challenges facing the nation including the

coronavirus pandemic economy and global warming but it was much less raucous an affair than last week's presidential debate between donald trump and joe biden is rob reynolds senator harrison vice president pence thank you for being here a sharp exchange over the trumpet ministrations handling of the coronavirus pandemic started the debate whatever the vice president is claiming the administration has done clearly it hasn't worked when you're looking at over 210000 dead bodies in our country american lives that have been lost families that are grieving that loss and you know the vice president is the head of the task force but when you see what the american people have done over these last 8 months hasn't worked. that's a great disservice to the sacrifices the american people of maine so let's talk about caring about the american people the american people have to sacrifice far too much because of the incompetence of this administration pince dodged
1:13 pm
a question about the rose garden ceremony that became a super spreader event it was an outdoor event which all of our scientists regularly and routinely advise the difference here is president trump and i trust the american people to make choices in the best interest of their health care is fired back let's talk about respecting the american people to respect the american people when you tell them the truth but look senator harris you're trying to do your own opinion but the candidates clashed over the economy taxes and sharply over global warming which harris called an existential threat we have seen a pattern with this administration which is they don't believe in science and joe's plan is about saying we're going to deal with it but we're also going to create jobs donald trump when asked about the wildfires in california and the question was you know the science is telling us this you know what donald trump said that science doesn't know we don't need a massive 2 trillion dollar green new deal that would impose all new mandates on
1:14 pm
american businesses and american families there were flashes reminiscent of the chaotic troubled biden debate as parents repeatedly interrupted and talked over harris but she remained calm mr vice president speaking if you don't mind letting me finish we can have a conversation ok ok senator harris other issues discussed included racial justice policing reform and the rise of white supremacists i want everyone to know who puts on the uniform of law enforcement every day president trump and i stand with you and the reality of this is that we are talking about an election in 27 days where last week the president of the united states took it to. bait stage in front of 70000000 americans and refused to condemn white supremacists whether any of the exchanges in this debate will change many voters' minds remains to be seen meanwhile both pants and harris as well as biden will be campaigning on thursday in
1:15 pm
arizona a swing state where polls show biden is leading robert also al jazeera salt lake city. well the u.s. approach to foreign policy also received plenty of attention comedy harris criticized donald trump's relationships with foreign powers well this depends that they've worked in america's favor donald trump the commander in chief of the united states of america prefers to take the word of lattimer putin over the word of the american intelligence community you look at our friends at nato he has walked away from agreements you can talk look at the iran nuclear deal and because of donald trump's unilateral approach to foreign policy coupled with his isolationism he pulled us out and has made america less safe will present from kept his word when we move the american embassy to jerusalem the capital of the state of israel
1:16 pm
when joe biden is vice president and they promise to do that they never did we stood strong with our allies but we've been demanding nato is now contributing more to our common defense than ever before thanks to president trump's leadership we strengthen our alliances across the as your pacific and we've stood strong. against those who would do us harm. let's bring in mo on bashara he's our chief political analyst who joins us on skype from doha welcome back to the news on ma one at one point mr pence said we've won the trade war against china factually and financially that's not actually true not 100 percent true for sure so why is a v.p. candidate the sitting vice president why is he kind of indulging in half truths at a time of such a crucial change and why is he viewing it as an inaccurate interpretation of foreign policy through the prism of trade policy. well look the question of
1:17 pm
china is probably the most important foreign policy challenge for the united states not just for the front and the decision for any administration we're going forward that's why a road map a vision a strategy of how to deal with china is probably the most indispensable. issue facing any administration moving forward because as we all know from history from if you surveyed people today there is nothing more establishing to the international system than a global power competing with a rising world power and now china rising what power wants to be and power to be an agent power it's probably going to have to confront the united states and egypt. that is a huge issue to be reduced to a simple question of trade surplus really is a huge disservice to anyone who understands american interest and american standing
1:18 pm
in the world and yet it wasn't used the question of trade under the trump administration and clearly as couple of hours has demonstrated with figures that a lot of farmers a lot of blue labor americans have lost their jobs lost their livelihoods because of this random confrontational. approach to china not really realizing that china is not some medium sized country with no ambition but shina is there head to head with the united states they also class directly over this specific issue ma and take a listen then vice president earlier referred to it as part of what he thinks is an accomplishment. that the president's trade war with china you lost that trade won you lost it what ended up happening is because of
1:19 pm
a so-called trade war with china america lost 300000 manufacturing jobs farmers have experienced bankruptcy because of it we are in a manufacturing recession because if it is why is it ma and right now over the past week or so we're also hearing those republican voices those g.o.p. supporter voices who may not actually like or support donald trump they're kind of saying mr trump isn't foreign policy but mr trump is foreign policy because he has personally reset so many points of engagement around the world be it china or the middle east his attitude towards countries in africa his attitude towards his personal interpersonal working relationship with nato leaders as well he has changed those a lot. this is one of the shortcomings of businessman a c.e.o. if you will come statesman. president trump has been boasting for decades now about
1:20 pm
his capacity to negotiate even with books course helped by others about how to negotiate the whole bit for him is that i can sit with president xi of china and i conclude in some of various things the chinese don't work that way they are statesman they are probably the longest duration and the history of humankind they understand systems and they understand how to work in terms of a huge bureaucracy so the idea that soup to convince person cheated was of course a nonstarter not only that there's something even more important personal relations don't or such huge competitions as i was saying between the rising. president obama did a number of things they're not perfect they're not probably not enough but he did a number of pretend agreements with a number of countries surrounding china he did visit to asia in the sense of
1:21 pm
sending more navy power to the asian pacific and he engaged china number of issues including human rights chinese responsibility around the world train. this was a system. that was a question system i think approach or pretty nations with china. allies on the question of china strong on the other hand engage china on trade and you need to the europeans who are america's most important ally for any strategic move with china any in it to america's asia and. south korea and others that america needs in order to contain china so what we ended up with. but isn't trump wants to cancel everything obama is keeping up with some random person
1:22 pm
relationship what you want to get best friend this is another thing and of course it all fall apart and now america doesn't share of much with which to confront case b. or. ok final point mo and please why is it as we get closer to the election of ember the 3rd this white house seems to want to live in an alternate reality be it covert 19 donald trump putting up a video last thing last night on twitter where he just looked and sounded peculiar but whether it's coded 19 in america whether it's black lives matter whether it's relationships between different countries across this region in the middle east that spawn as being something completely different to what it actually is when the u.a.e. and bahrain normalize relations with israel that spawn is peace in our time so trump wants to live in this parallel pocket universe of something else.
1:23 pm
well. to think of the matter is it's regrettable is that this alternate didn't work for some 3 years from 2016 when he 1st entered the presidential elections and through last year it worked for a whole lot. you know. in 2000 meant personal relationships every day allegedly lying about something or the other deceiving in one way or another it tends to work for him and he actually was for some time relatively popular starting out with his mates however something happened earlier in the year and that's that. you just cannot simply lie your way through that and that's already there you can manage it you can work with. you can work with science you can work with the scientific community you know how to. i
1:24 pm
think. just confidence that's not just bushnell your next election but also in terms of implementing policies among americans whether it is testing this about the unfortunately the pandemic test for this administration was a major fiasco and since then said to me since march to my mind the circus no longer works independent no longer work that deception and hence and that's what i called it recently in one of the piece well just iraq i think 'd and here it has to be things if you will and ministrations has lost. lost in a sense it lost its world joe if you will but also lost a. commanding of popular support for 4 more years. contracted coronavirus i think now and knowing good to talk to you as
1:25 pm
a pleasure stay in touch we'll talk to you soon. moving on to another big story for you on the news our human rights watch is urging me in mass government to immediately end the detention of 130000 range of muslims in a report released on thursday the rakhine state refugee camps are described as squalid and abusive and says there are severe limitations on movement education health care and shelter that's led to higher rates of malnutrition water borne illnesses and the risk of dying young some 750000 rainbow fled to neighboring bangladesh after a military crackdown in 2017 meanwhile says is ready to bring them back but that's undermined by its own ongoing detention issues during the refugees in bangladesh of outline conditions for their return they include guarantees of safety and freedom for the detained muslims the ones we're talking about up there in that northern state the state of rakhine let's bring in phil robertson is the deputy asia director for human rights watch she joins us from bangkok phil welcome back to the
1:26 pm
news out if the government listens to you and they set these 130000 people free what happens to them after that. well these people would be able to return to their homes they would be able to restart their lives that have freedom of movement they'd have access to livelihoods they'd have the ability to send their children to school they'd be having access to health care that they're currently denied being locked down in these detention camps you know really we would be returning ideally to a previous 2012 reality in rakhine state where rohingya in rakhine lived side by side it wasn't perfect but they got a lot and that is the challenge now is how do we get them out of these camps and then move towards reconciliation that would allow for people to reside side by side again have you had any reaction yet from the government in myanmar and if you have
1:27 pm
do you trust what they say we've not heard from the government of myanmar about our findings we wrote a letter to aung san suu kyi and her government requesting their opinions on the issues that we are raising and we received no response would be people who are being detained it's an astonishing number 130000 would they feel safe if they all set free. well i believe that they would want guarantees about their safety you know the government would have to play a role in ensuring safety for them so far neither the state government nor the police nor the military have been willing to do that they just said that it's not safe for you to go back but then they don't take it any further like what are they going to do to restrain people who might try to attack them across problems or you know they're not serious about lousing these people out of these detention camps
1:28 pm
that's the reality of it here and this report really calls their bluff. would they be better off if they could safely be moved across the border into bangladesh but that in itself i guess would be a bad situation because whilst bangladesh has done the right thing by altering the refugees in the camps there near cox's bazaar i think it is those camps are overloaded anyway. right and we don't want to create more refugees here i mean in fact the endgame here is to have everybody be able to return to me on mar to retire in state to the places where they had their homes with citizenship freedom of movement and other rights guaranteed ideally we would have the refugees in bangladesh able to return in safety in dignity with adequate protection and guarantees for the various rights that they need and this group that is currently detained in these detention camps. is really the sort of bellwether for
1:29 pm
a decision about rohingya whether to return from bangladesh or not. running and bangladesh in the road go are stuck in these camps they're communicating with each other certainly you know on various different online messenger systems and things like that so they know what's going on and how myanmar treats the current group of 130000 who are locked down will really influence the decision of the rohingya who are in the camps in bangladesh still good to talk to you thanks for coming on phil robertson there with human rights watch out of bangkok ok time to pause for the weather has had some. telfair is now restrained thing as it's moving out into the warm waters of the gulf of mexico pulling away from the land. in the waters around $31.00 celsius so plenty warm enough for it to gather more strength winds picking up to around $190.00 columbus's per hour sustained winds gusting significantly
1:30 pm
higher than that over $200.00 promises presage damaging winds this it is moving quite quickly that some saving grace but there is life threatening storm. warnings for those so watch out for flash flooding certainly a possibility and we could also see some mudslides some very heavy rain coming in as a system continues to pick up more moisture as it not just further northwards grassi pushing up towards louisiana catchcry sri storm by the time it does make landfall some when they cameron louisiana was to go on through friday and we are looking at the very heavy rain and the vicious winds as well come saturday it'll pull its way across arkansas all easing over a towards say the tennessee valley and then gradually made by which was the higher valley eventually pushing its way out towards the eastern seaboard so lots of very heavy rain coming in across that southeastern corner as we go on into sunday but dry skies do come in behind peter everton thanks very much talk to you soon still to come here on al-jazeera we have the sports. and i'm nicholas hall in senegal as

1:33 pm
infections are higher than they've been ever been in places such as austria slovakia and ukraine in germany their warnings coming from the they could soon be seeing 10000 new cases every day. at least 30 more soldiers have been killed in fighting over the going to the defense ministry in the disputed region says $350.00 servicemen and dice interfacing with the syrian forces broke out 12 days ago it's the worst violence between armenia and azerbaijan in decades president runs handling of the covert outbreak has dominated the u.s. b.p. debate in salt lake city mike pence defended the u.s. response and he blamed china democratic candidate comma harris describe the administration's record as quote the greatest failure in u.s. history. scott lucas runs america unfiltered he's a professor at the university of birmingham in the u.k. scott welcome back who one is too shallow a question who got through to the people they wanted to get through to ear. well i
1:34 pm
think each side got through in a way that didn't happen in the 1st presidential debate because it was such a nightmare with donald trump's interruptions i think mike pence got through to that so-called trump base in a more measured way than the president i think can let her go to very sure performance got through to those who are already going to vote for the biden harris ticket and probably reach a lot of undecided voters especially in the moments when she politely but firmly push back comments as he tried to interrupt or i think the key thing peter is this 2 key things one is that because the biden heris camp is in the lead in their lead is expanding all how malarious had to do is make sure she didn't fall over last night and that was accomplished secondly the coronavirus issue is now number one for the rest of this campaign truckin pence didn't want that they wanted to be the supreme court and supposed fight against extremists and anarchist they've got a mountain to climb if the pandemic continues to dominate the headlines so i think
1:35 pm
simply because of that. biden has come out better our last night's change ok as to come out heresies performance i mean donald trump the u.s. president is in isolation you know tweeting every couple of minutes on twitter mike pence is the head of the coronavirus task force he's sitting there separated by 2 sheets a plexiglas so the the danger from covert is real and present and in the debates in the chamber and kamel harris didn't go after him on that alone on that that's literally physical structure of the debate in relation to the government's handling of coronavirus how come. we should mention the plus a glass but in that very 1st answer that she gave peter on the open question she went down the camera to the american people and said this is the greatest failure in american history and when push tried to push back she came back with if your
1:36 pm
measure is had worked we wouldn't have 212000 americans who are dead she then a debt of 5 the fact that the president has called that fear coronavirus a hoax and that might pence does carry responsibility it's how the task force so i think in that opening section she positions herself and joe biden in terms of responsibility and leadership which is the key thing i think as voters consider their final choices before november 3rd ok don't from 74 joe biden 7777 plus 74 that's 151100 51 years of decay old age god forbid simas coronavirus why did both of them completely and utterly dodge the question what do you do a year or 2 from now if you will president falls off his perch and you have to become president well because i don't think any of us presidential candidate says they expect the presidential candidate to be in the situation where they leave office earlier and it shows weakness and you don't invent weakness with
1:37 pm
a presidential candidate especially with a lot of dissent promotion being thrown about falsely about joe biden's mental and physical health but i think a broader question on this peter is. which candidate came off better in terms of responsibility and leadership if they have to succeed i think both did well to a certain extent but i think mike pence well i think he gave a hostage to fortune at the very end of the debate when he not only refused refused to call out donald trump for threatening not to accept the election result but in effect backed donald trump were if they lose on november the 3rd then they might not accept the result in claimants raj what does that mean scott that we have to define you know when they come to write the history books of what is normally a kind of a side show to the main the main circus ring of a u.s. election cycle when they come to write the history books of this might people be saying oh nobody said at the time harris can never be president because she's not up to it so we have to define it as a say as
1:38 pm
a negative well i think the definition of this is going to be that in light of. the presidential debate in light of the extraordinary circumstances the pandemic with a president who is not only suffering from it but possibly is on medication that's making the condition worse this vice presidential debate will be marked perhaps is the moment when american the most critical election since 860 had to make a decision on what we're going to go over the spectacle which is caught us out for the last 4 years or are we going to try to be responsible adults in the room including the people who may 1 day be in the white house please go super quickly super fast 15 seconds how does this change the optics surrounding the next presidential debate because in theory were a few days away from that. i think it reinforces that joe biden just speaks to the american public on health care and corona virus and donald trump has to decide whether he's going to behave like an adult or continue to throw everything into disarray scott great to talk to again thank you so much scott lucas the professor
1:39 pm
at the university of birmingham thank you. well donald trump the man himself is assuring americans of his administration's response to covert the us president released the video that we've talked about filmed at the white house recalls his coronavirus infection a blessing from god he also touted the experimental cocktail he's using saying he will make it free for everyone mr trump was back in the oval office for the 1st time since he was released from hospital on monday i went in i wasn't feeling so hot and within a very short period of time they gave me regeneration it's called regeneration and other things too but i think this was the key but they gave me regeneration and it was like unbelievable i felt good immediately i felt as good 3 days ago as i do now so i think this was a blessing from god that i caught it this was a blessing in disguise i caught it i heard about this drug i said let me take it it
1:40 pm
was my suggestion i said let me take it and it was incredible the word work i want to get for you what i got and i'm going to make it free you're not going to pay for it it wasn't your fault that this happened it was china's fault and china is going to pay a big price what they've done to this country china is going to pay a big price what they've done to the world. that video was watched by our correspondent in washington mike hanna. he's talking about the monoclonal antibody cocktail called regeneration which was given to president trump while he was in hospital now there's a huge amount of problems associated with this. trial studies for this particular cocktail were only released at the end of september it is still in development it is nowhere near final trials or nowhere near f.d.a. approval now president trump got a. certain exception that he was allowed to use the compassionate use it is termed
1:41 pm
now we understand as well wolf from one of the co-founders of the company itself that president trump is one of only 10 people outside clinical trials who's actually received a dose of regeneration saying it's going to be free to all americans well that means the federal government is going to pay for it president trump says as well that the military will distribute it and we understand from regeneration officials that the 1st contract for the 1st 300000 doses has been signed to the department of defense so the 1st body that will get doses of this drug is the department of defense which goes in accord with president trump's claims that the military will actually distribute the cocktail but it's a long way away from that just to produce this volume of cocktails before final clinical trials of even being concluded is very difficult situation to see. we move

on aid agencies are warning of a sharp increase in coronavirus cases in syria they're worried that the lack of infrastructure in opposition and kurdish held areas means doctors won't be able to deal with a significant outbreak and despite the relatively low number of cases confirmed by the government the u.n. says there is widespread transmission going on in a hoarder. then reports from inside syria continue to point to much or to spread of covert 90 and the number of confirmed cases the united nations has been reporting rising infection rates in syria for some time now given the limited testing across the country and challenges in contact tracing it is likely that the actual number of cases far exceeds official figures. the syrian government reports nearly 4500 cases and 200 deaths and portrays the situation as under control but multiple sources questioned that narrative they say infections have been in the 10s of thousands and at least 65 doctors died as they struggled in ill equipped hospitals
