party victim of running a criminal gang. we begin with the growing differences between regional powers russia and turkey over the ongoing violence in the corner kind of are a call by moscow for the armed forces of armenia and azerbaijan to abide by a russian cease fire has been ignored smaller than $500.00 people have been killed since fighting broke out last month the region is internationally recognized as part of azerbaijan but controlled and inhabited by ethnic armenians russia's foreign minister criticized turkey over its unconditional backing of azerbaijan suggest doesn't it of course on the brutal we do not agree with the position voiced by turkey that was also expressed several times by president so it is not a secret that we cannot agree with a statement that a military solution to the conflict exists and is permissible. turkey's leader has

shot back with a defiant message in parliament richard typer do and says turkey will continue to support it says arry allies said that the region should be given back to azerbaijan because that's a lot of you 3 members of minsk the united states russia and france are still putting this off with their stalling tactics just give them the occupied lands let them go to their lands let them do what they want in their own lands but there is an invasion here if there is democracy and human rights in this world and if you have been assigned to solve this problem as 3 members of the minsk group for 30 years what you need to do is not stall what you need to do is finish your negotiations and hand over the lands to their owner about a scythe has this update from go to armenia. there is still a lot of fighting along the line of contact and the angry rhetoric between armenia and azerbaijan is ratcheting up azerbaijan is accusing armenia of targeting oil and

gas pipelines armenia says john is trying to seize control of nagorno-karabakh russia's please over the top of this for them to observe a humanitarian ceasefire don't seem to be being listened to and the big difference in the dynamic now is the involvement of turkey for many many of the 26 years since the end of the war the ceasefire in 9094 armenia and azerbaijan a face off across this line of control a lot of contact the have been incidents before the has been fighting before but never on this scale and this time the difference is the full throated support of turkey behind. miss is why russia says no we want to ceasefire we do not want we do not believe turkey should be involved in future talks over over nagorno-karabakh which turkey believes those talks are failed because of a 26 years they haven't found a resolution to what to do with nagorno-karabakh all the lands taken by armenia in

the last war play for. tens of thousands of afghans have been forced to escape days of heavy fighting between government troops and taliban fighters aid agencies say hospitals are becoming overwhelmed by the wounded from the battles which began in southern afghanistan on saturday of icing and how many provinces centered around the regional capital lashkar gah u.s. airstrikes have supported afghan security forces on the ground in major taliban offensive coincides with talks being held in qatar to end america's longest war fighting cute complicates donald trump's plans to have american soldiers home by christmas philo filio contre 40 is in the capital car rules she says health services are stretched in the area where the fighting is. the main trauma hospital in provincial capital. has been operating at full
5:05 pm
capacity cannot treat anymore people at the m.s.f. supported another m.s.f. supported hospital in the area has been serving as an overflow facility with over 20 people have been admitted there in the past 24 hours and among them are even pregnant women and children in terms of the displaced according to the u.n. and local sources $35000.00 people have been forced to flee their homes a lot of them with nothing but their clothes we've seen pictures of them trying to load as much as they can and some model bikes and try to escape the fighting now are you in assessment teams are on the air in the try to assess the situation and it's extremely difficult to get information and a lot of the infrastructure the telephone lines have been damaged so it's hard to a says what exactly what the exact needs are. serious some of binge a very it is in doha where the peace talks have been ongoing since last month.
5:06 pm
there have been some headway in the talks and to discuss that further we have a there's a senior advisor to president musharraf going in with another another he was also a member of the peace negotiation team thank you very much for taking the time i've heard you describe this as this ongoing violence as an impediment to peace in afghanistan is the afghan negotiation team willing to leave the table if the violence doesn't stop well our brief from the national defense and security forces or doing the job of protecting our people or our constitution. that this level of violence that we have seen in the past 3 weeks is a clear indicator of less care about peace by the other side more about the violence it's acceptable to our people to see civilians dying to see public properties and public infrastructure be destroyed and that's not injecting a good sense of confidence in the peace process that we are so willingly
5:07 pm
ungentlemanly and faithfully engaged and the other side doesn't inject that with the same level of genuine mr stop the violence we need to get this violence level down or stop it completely or people demand cease so that they can build a level of trust and confidence that a peace process will lead to a shared future for all of our friends that's what we are. engaged looking forward to to work with the taleban. together that you. well a part of a theater on the swami is the acting humanitarian coordinator for the u.n. in afghanistan and joins us now from kabul good to have you with us on al-jazeera what impacts would you say this latest fighting is having on the people who live in helmand province. but unfortunately it what it has resulted in is displacement of the other hearing from our field teams on the ground is that close
5:08 pm
to 5000 families which is about 35000 people out importantly being displaced and this displacement will lead to additional leads from that site for shelter for work and sanitation trued event and also not knowing when they will be able to return back so this is one of the concern we have because it is going to be a humanitarian action that we all need to converge together and and promote support what we have teams on the ground in the needs at this point of time what we're quite to our aid workers are medical workers able to get into the region to provides that assistance yes they are in fact as i speak to you we have joint assessment teams already on the ground we have our units the our colleagues they're getting assistance in terms of dance and non-food items. is providing facilities as well on the ground we do have partners stationed in the
5:09 pm
province so we are galvanizing assessments to ensure that we are able to understand what the emerging needs such and be able to provision what those needs on the ground and what sort of thing is needed there we understand you need the tents the food and water but this war in afghanistan has been going on for quite some time though we have peace talks ongoing that don't seem to be results of you anything other than an escalation of fighting what message would you like to send to both sides in this conflict to draw attention back to the people of afghanistan who are the ones who are trapped in the middle of all of this. the main message from my side will be to ensure that people who are displaced who get affected are the ones who are in the center of all the assistance that we need to plan and provide because while the rest of the process i don't know why our immediate concern is
5:10 pm
that there are no more duration the conditions of people that it is in terms of food insecurity village in terms of basic services access to them then these kind of displacements happen they also happen because services are not being met at the location where these people are currently living so we need to make sure that services to people continue to be made trained and when such displaced and happen agencies come together and provide assistance our main reason for being there is to ensure that people are not suffering and they are being assisted in an emergency mode and also looking at what else do they need and and help them go back to the place of origin so humanitarian action is something that we really really want to focus on the despondent time while at the same time ensuring that they are also what the back of their locations if if the fighting stops ok.
5:11 pm
joining us there from kabul thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with al-jazeera. israel has approved the construction of thousands of new illegal settlements in the occupied west bank it's the 1st time israel has approved the building of settler homes since a normalization deal was struck with the united arab emirates. the settlements are considered illegal under international law. is near ramallah in the occupied west bank with reaction from palestinian officials. we've just heard from the spokesperson of the palestinian president not beat up again and he says that he condemns this move any condemns the general situation which israel's getting to expand its illegal settlements on the ground while at the same time getting what he called free normalization deals with israel of course this advancement of these new units that resembles the highest number of units being advanced in one
5:12 pm
year if compared to the decade we know that the issue of settlements has been the reason for rift between the israeli government and the previous u.s. administration under president obama just writes before the end of obama's 2nd term the us did not. vote or veto a u.s. . story a u.n. security council draft resolution that condemned settlements and considered them illegal under international law so it was a message from the obama administration against the israeli illegal israeli settlements and many boston ians here are hoping that at term or that if the democratic nominee joe biden is going to be elected in november that they think that this would curb israeli plans of expanding settlements.
5:13 pm

continue to violate a russian cease fire that came into effect on saturday. tens of thousands of afghans have been forced to escape 4 days of fighting between taliban and government forces aid agencies say hospitals are becoming overwhelmed by the wounded in helmand province. the israeli government has approved the construction of thousands of new illegal settlements homes in the occupied west bank it's the 1st to go ahead since the united arab emirates and better a normalized relations with israel. delegates from israel and lebanon which are technically still at war have met for the 1st time in decades what are being called in direct talks about their maritime border disputes are under way in southern lebanon both sites claim parts of the mediterranean sea were oil and gas has been discovered sinha reports from nakoula. away from the media israeli and lebanese negotiators talk about
5:17 pm
a decades old maritime border dispute for the 1st time the hostile neighbors are sitting in the same room but are speaking through their un hosts and u.s. mediators they insist this is not about making peace but it's about extending the exploration of potentially gaz a rich waters in the mediterranean the timing appears to be political it's quite peculiar that is happening exactly. when us. toward some of them used. to simply mean that. the deal was announced after u.s. sanctions were imposed on politicians including a close ally to speaker of parliament nabih berri for corruption and financially enabling hezbollah berry is an ally of the iranian backed group which has fought wars with israel in the past and previously opposed the us mediating role in the dispute hezbollah says its attitude toward israel hasn't changed and given that
5:18 pm
it's the strongest force in lebanon its approval is needed for talks to go ahead both israel and lebanon and says the negotiations are not about normalization or reconciliation but this is the 1st time the 2 sides discuss a civilian issue since middle east peace talks in 1990 israel and lebanon claim about 860 square kilometers in the mediterranean sea where significant gas fields have been discovered the problem is that. i don't. mean what you want at them. best. but amid a reelection campaign the trumpet ministration has politically invested in these talks coming after the u.s. brokered deals between israel and the u.a.e. and. they were aware of pressure further pressure and the u.s. having some sort of agreement moving forward but obviously didn't really. have been
5:19 pm
more direct engagement with the mother or. even it's limited at this point that's not the full organisation but but i think at this point it's a win win what's not to get into that we haven't the especially a quick one there is no deadline but in the words of a u.s. diplomat the talks can bring about stability and security along the volatile border deal or not for now these negotiations are serving the interests of all the parties involved. now could a southern lebanon. a member of the far right golden dawn party has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a rap artist and the head of the party 19 to criminal organization was jailed for 13 years old and all members answered parliament's at the peak of the greek financial crisis and 2012 its absence of anger against the stairs he measures and had a fiercely anti immigrant agenda johnson office reports live from athens. i think
5:20 pm
this is thought to be the 1st time in europe this a nazi party or a fascist party has been convicted in its entirety the 18th golden dawn members of parliament who entered the legislature in 2012 with 7 percent of the popular vote had all now been given a severe prison sentence since each of the 6 most senior including the party leader 13 years plus 6 months to a year for weapons possession a 7th leading m.p. gets 10 years and the remaining 11 which includes the wife of the party leader get between. 5 and 7 years for membership in golden dawn that's because golden dawn was deemed by the court to be a criminal organization masquerading as a political party because all of the acts of violence committed by golden dawn
quote
5:21 pm
members were deemed to be part of a systemic agenda for violence by the party directed by the leadership that's why the leadership has twice the sentences of the other m.p.'s who weren't part of the political committee of the percy so for directing or being a member of a criminal organization all of those m.p.'s now face those jail times when i went to the 3rd day of u.s. confirmation hearings for trumped supreme court's justice pick any clearly barrus is again facing tough questions from senate committee members so far she's the impressed by several democrats on key issues like health care abortion and election disputes my there is alan fischer on capitol hill allan take us through what's been happening on this 3rd day so far. well she's currently being interviewed by john cornyn who is
5:22 pm
a senator from texas also served on the state bench for a while while he was down in texas so has some judicial experience but perhaps the most interesting exchange has come just in the last 20 minutes or so with patrick leahy who is a democratic senator from vermont now he asked whether or not anyone was above the law in the eyes of the judge she said no obviously that was the case and then he asked can a president self pardon no this is all about donald trump and what he might do should he lose the election given that there are a number of cases that could be pending against him some of them criminal that could mean the former president if he loses the election appearing in court. refused to answer that by saying simply that this needs a lot of legal analysis is not something she could answer it's not something to be legislated has been talked about around the time of next month nixon's impeachment and resignation but it never gone through the legal process so she couldn't answer that that's something that's going to get
5:23 pm
a lot of plea in the next few hours here in the united states what is also going to get a lot of play not just over the next few hours but the next few days is her approach to the affordable care act you know in the past she's written some opinions and also done some interviews where she has criticized the constitutionality of it all of course this is important because the a c. is going to be in front of the supreme court a week after the election and the decision there could possibly put in jeopardy the insurance companies recognizing preexisting conditions for 23000000 americans so this is a very big deal and she was asked whether she actually ever defended the affordable health care act. did you ever say. in defense of the. weather. academic or. the judiciary as pretty certain. yes or no now i never had. been.
5:24 pm
way to use of the laws are constitutional you know so i think we don't. she is always argued that when she was talking before she was doing so as an academic and it's different when you're a judge because you have to go through the whole process it's something that she has been saying for the 2 days of these hearings remember she was in front of the committee for more than 11 hours on tuesday she's expected somewhere in the region of feet in front of senators today and then there's another part of the hearing come thursday but it's going to be another long day for him and you can be guaranteed that more democratic senators are going to drill down in her to enter position for the affordable care act not just because they see is important but they know it's good politics it's something that they can use in the upcoming presidential race and in many cases in the senate races the senate seats that are
