we understand the differences and similarities of cultures across the wound so no matter when you. encounter for that matter i care about how the u.s. engages with the rest of the world we're willing to fit in taking you into a place you might not visit otherwise and feel that you were there. al-jazeera. and iraq matheson this is the news our live from doha coming up the next 60 minutes voting is underway in the u.s. presidential election after a long and divisive campaign handed by the pandemic. in one final push for votes joe biden's been out in philadelphia while donald trump is expected in virginia
9:01 pm
shortly. increase security in vienna after 4 people were killed in a shooting the government is calling a terrorist attack ugandan politician bobby wine is arrested and then released after being nominated for next year's presidential election. and in sports the argentine football legend diego maradona has been admitted to hospital although his doctor says it's not related to covert 19. voting is underway across the united states in what's expected to be a record turnout in the elections it's already the most controversial and highly anticipated poll in recent years and it comes in the midst of a deadly pandemic which continues to get worse donald trump and joe biden have campaigned for months now it's up to the american public that hasn't stopped the men battling for every. vote with biden out in pennsylvania and trump expected soon
9:02 pm
in virginia well let's begin our coverage by speaking to alan fischer in washington d.c. so we're getting ever closer to that deadline and the message is still being drowned out by both campaigns. both of them desperately trying to wring out every last vote particularly when it comes to some of the key states so we're seeing a lot of t.v. ads in key markets like or heigho like pennsylvania like north carolina texas georgia as well 2 florida of course and we have joe biden who's doing a lot in pennsylvania this state where he was born he's hoping that he can turn from a republican state and to a democratic one and give him an easier path to the white house donald trump what he's decided to spend the day talking to talk show hosts across america started the day speaking to his favorite t.v. channel his favorite t.v. show seeing that he would only did clear a victory if there was
9:03 pm
a victory he said there was no time for nonsense which is a change in the position he's held over the last few weeks he's going to go and speak to some of the workers for the republican party over to arlington in virginia before heading back to the white house interestingly enough we were told that the b. nor events at the trump hotel just a short distance away from the white house instead because of corporate restrictions he was going for a big gathering at the east room of the white house with no being told so that gathering is being scaled down from 402250 how do you read that is that the possibility that the trump campaign things that there is not good news coming rather than holding what many have described as another super spreader event i guess that's one way to think about it donald trump himself has been campaigning vigorously 17 events in the last 3 days gotta give him credit remember it's not that long ago he was in the hospital with corbett decided to come back and hit the campaign trail and he's been. hammering his message that he's good for the united
9:04 pm
states he's built up a great economy that was interrupted by corporate and he deserves another 4 years to show exactly what he can do saying that joe biden incoming the hottest put all that at risk he's also very comfortable but with the years in the polls most of the polls showing that he's behind joe biden particularly in those key states that we were talking about but he will point to the fact 4 years ago at this time he was behind in all those states then and he feels comfortable with that because we know that the polls got it wrong in 2016 and they think he thinks they might have got it wrong again which would mean of course 4 more years of donald trump in the white house and we can't forget of course that this isn't just a race for the presidency this is a race also possibly for control of the senate as well. exactly right and people tend to forget that it gets subsumed by the all encompassing battle for the white house joe biden has gone out on the stump and many of his
9:05 pm
surrogates have as well to talk up their potential candidates for the senate donald trump has done a better of that but not quite as much and the senate really is in the balance because the democrats need to flip just 3 states and they would take control of the senate remember at the moment 100 people in the senate the republicans have a 5347 majority so if they flip 3 states they become the majority and they think that they can do that in fact if you look at the polls it would suggest that there are 5 seats that they could potentially went which would be a big victory if joe biden won the white house as well to have the white house the senate and the house all pointing in the same direction all democrats who let me just interrupt you there and i apologize for doing that here we are seeing live pictures of donald trump in virginia let's just quickly listen in to what he's saying i know you'll be here all night and i think you're going to see some
9:06 pm
tremendous results and you know we had rallies there was love at those rallies and there's never been rallies like this has never been and i say it in front of the media and they can check it they can fact check it if they want but there's never been anything like we just had and i think a combination of the debate maybe the debates but the debate certainly the 2nd debate and the rallies were it was a good combination and we really i think we took off so it's been really good i want to just thank everybody in the room you see these people we travel with these people are extremely nice and they respect very much what we've done and actually i think they do if you want to as i think they do you have a place. i feel very good after doing that many. rally's the voice gets a little bit choppy i think. god did not design designed it for that much but it we you know we did
9:07 pm
a lot of and we did it actually 6 the last day because one finished at 2 in the morning so i put it on so we did 5 plus sort of one but we did a live and i feel great the only one. everybody should come together and i think success brings us together we have a tremendous success we had 33 point one percent in growth g.d.p. and nobody's ever seen a number like that the last time the number was less than half and i think it was in 1952 so we doubled up the number more than doubled up the number i think we're set for a tremendous success and. success is going to bring unity it was bring it before and then we had hit with the china virus and that certainly you have to go back and i think we've done an incredible job with respect to that other than public relations because and i'm not sure that it's possible to convince you of it is you know you people were not really convinced it will no matter what we did but we've
9:08 pm
done an incredible job not only in handling it we get we were expecting and people were projecting 2200000 people we closed up the greatest economy in the history of the world for any country not just for our country and we are now opening it up we saved more than 2000000 lives and did an incredible job with their appeaser therapeutics and with i think maybe cures because frankly some of the stuff is so good but if you look at the ventilator situation we had a ventilator problem and now with all the work that everybody's done including jerry people coming in from silicon valley and now we're we're sending the ventilators all over i mean all over the world now all over the world. we're producing for other countries but it's been it's been an incredible period of time and i think that. if you look at britain and i say they say proudly we are rounding
9:09 pm
the corner but the vaccines are coming out very soon they're having tremendous success johnson and johnson moderna pfizer and. we're going to have something we're going have a very special year next year i think is going to be more successful than it was last year we had the best year we've ever had last year and i think we're going to be right in that category for next year so that's very succinct very you. know i'm not thinking of a concession speech or acceptance speech it. hopefully will be only fueling one of those 2 and you know. winning is easy losing is never easy now for me it's not. but i think we have when we when you see rallies the likes of which in the history of this country probably in the history of the world nobody's ever seen before. there's a tremendous love going on in this country and there's really a tremendous unity there's a tremendous unity nobody's ever seen that where you take an airport and the
9:10 pm
airports not big enough to hold the crowds nobody's ever seen a thing like that and our opposition as you know would have a few people sitting in circles and that's ok that's not abnormal that's not abnormal actually i miss the way it is but we would get crowds of 50000 people 45000 people more nobody's ever seen anything like that sort of it was an otter they're great people these are people that. hey prescience what we did and they also remember before i got there and before we all got there this group has been with me a lot of my very young but they've been with me many of them for a long time right a long time and i just want i really came here to thank you all and then i'm going to say and get immediately back to work. that's us president donald trump talking to the press there in on a visit to virginia he was saying that everybody should come together
9:11 pm
a success he says brings everyone together he was predominantly talking about. his belief that he has handled the u.s. economy well he says that he was talking about the successful economy of the united states success is going to bring unity and said he also spoke about his handling of the covert 19 of the corona virus spread throughout the united states he said he was doing a great job he's talking again let's listen again to what he's saying. a lot of people talked about texas and texas is we we will have a tremendous victory there based on you know everything that you say this is no longer polls this is now we're looking at what's happening he's ever tremendous it'll be a tremendous victory in texas i'm hearing we're doing tremendously well in arizona i think we're doing well all over you know. your book. well i think you know possibly tonight depending on the extent of
9:12 pm
a victory i think you could go tonight i think the ruling on pennsylvania was an unfortunate one by the supreme court because i think we should know what happens on the night when people put their ballots in earlier. but you have to have you have to have numbers you can't have these things to lay for many days and maybe weeks you can't do that the whole world is where 'd this country is waiting but the whole world is waiting and a lot of shenanigans a lot of bad things happen with ballots when you say oh let's devote days and days and all of a sudden the ballot count changes and you take a look at philadelphia the history of philadelphia politics no i don't put people on their honor code i don't think it's right and i think it's a very dangerous thing that they've done with that decision and maybe their wisdom will change at decision or maybe we'll go back and give them a right to change it but that's a terrible it's a very dangerous decision for this country but they did with pennsylvania and some others also you have to have
9:13 pm
a date and the date happens to be november 3rd and we should be entitled to know who won on november 3rd and if somebody comes along and puts a ballot in way late they shouldn't be they should put the ballot in early there's no reason why they can't put the ballot in 2 weeks earlier or one week earlier i think it's a very dangerous decision for a country in many ways dangerous in many ways. here. on our primary i mean we're going to have to see we have a big night play and we're going to have a very big night i just think we're going to have a tremendous. i think we're going to have a look i'm looking at right now i'm looking at different locations and we're seeing lines of people. and they're wearing a lot of red material on their hats but now i was saying in certain areas that would be trump areas we're seeing lines of people that are extended for miles is saying it to i mean you don't have to say it but you're seeing it to so i think
9:14 pm
we're going to have a great night but it's politics and it's elections and you never know i can say that. texas arizona a few of them are looking really very very strong florida looking very very strong they spent hundreds of millions of dollars in florida but the people of florida they know i love them and they love me you know we just have a automatic up list. here but. no i don't think we're going to have any slippage i think we're going to have look by relationship to seniors i happen to be a senior i don't want to say that too loud and there's. people that are averaging about 20 years old but but i don't think we're going to have anything i think of anything we're going to do very well and i have seen and we have seen african-americans way up and hispanic americans way off and people have seen that and. you know i've said with regard to african-american the black community i've
9:15 pm
done more than any other president with the exception of abraham lincoln. and sometimes i say with the possible exception of abraham lincoln but let's give him a lot of credit right but i've done more than any other president in the history of this country for african-americans the black community and they understand a criminal justice reform prison reform is sturrock lee black colleges and universities you look at what we've done opportunity zones with tim scott of south carolina who's great. nobody has done what i've done in terms of the african-american community so and they see it and they're tired of being used by the democrats for 100 years i mean it's like been 100 years. so i think we're doing very well there and i've heard we're doing very well with the hispanic the hispanic community and. what's. well
9:16 pm
you'll see that in the filings but we had we had plenty of money i will tell you we have plenty of money and what i didn't do is call up wall street and say send me 25000000 to the head of every firm i could have done that i would have been the all time king of fundraising event at that but once you do that you can no longer deal properly with them you just can't so i didn't do that we could have done that i could have raised much more money i mean hillary clinton spent much more money than i did and in this case when they raised that much money that means to me they're making deals and that can happen so thank you very much will maybe see you later have an exciting day every year i just appreciate everything you're all done it will see you soon ok. you're president of focus thank you very the republican national convention headquarters in virginia covering up a riot photo. that's we have covered on several occasions of course because we've
9:17 pm
been covering his his work he says towards the african american community as well as his control of the debate let's bring in alan fischer in washington d.c. alan interesting one of the things that he was talking about was his criticism of the supreme court's ruling with regard to mail in ballots in pennsylvania because the supreme court has allowed the states to count mail in ballots up to 3 days after the election and that is going to be a key issue in this election isn't it. well of course the supreme court took the view that if people cast their vote and the rules are set then you can't really change the rules in the middle of the game particularly if there's nothing in there they goes against the constitution so many people would see that the supreme court reached the right decision and that of course donald trump had talked about getting a supreme court that would help him when the election he actually said that sort of thing. very directly when he was pushing the nomination. who was later confirmed to
9:18 pm
be the next justice of the u.s. supreme court it's interesting he continues to hammer away this idea that he has done more for the african-american community than any other president since lincoln certainly the polls that we're seeing suggest that the number of african-americans who are voting for donald trump is up it's up slightly but of course if you go back to the 1960 s. and president johnson and he passed the equal rights i think many people in the african-american community would suggest that that was a much more significant than anything that donald trump has done and perhaps shows that he's not entirely gauged with that community in the way the thing see is what was also interesting is he was asked have you prepared to the acceptance or. one where you accept defeat and he said that he hadn't thought of either of those at the moment i bet your script writers have they'll be working on. and something that though it suggests that the trump campaign still thinks that this could take
9:19 pm
a little while to be sorted possibly 2 or 3 days. particularly of pennsylvania is as tight as the reports that we're getting at the other thing is that it suggests that donald trump still thinks he's going to win he still thinks the echoes of 2016 of their behind in the polls didn't spend as much money what i'm being told is that texas for joe biden has probably gone 2 or 3 points behind and they don't think they're going to make that up but georgia is still very much in play as far as they're concerned and of joe biden wins that it makes things a lot tougher for donald trump he's got to then defend essentially every single state he won in 2016 and if you look at the likes of michigan where he had his final campaign rally that becomes difficult because he's 67 points behind joe biden in the last polls there so a brave face from donald trump but we've been watching him for more than 4 years
9:20 pm
would you expect him to be any other way than he was the perhaps a bit low key but lacking in energy but give him credit he's a man in the seventy's in these managed 17 events in the last 3 days so he probably is feeling a little bit jet like that but exhausted by all allan thanks a lot that's alan fischer in washington d.c. ok i want to get the view from delaware that's biden's home state. is in the wilmington jamal this is a key state obviously for the democrats but just describe to us how people there are reacting to all of this. well i mean they've come out in force supports mainly of their candidate this is as you mentioned the hometown of joe biden and that's why there is a strong turnout in favor of him but their candidates hasn't been essentially resting on the laurels of these polls that have come out he's actually been pushing
9:21 pm
the votes even on election day he's been out canvassing support has particularly in key areas not too far from here in philadelphia in pennsylvania because they don't want to get brits in the same way they did 4 years ago when they thought they were going to win only to lose i want to introduce here david woodside who is the chair of the new castle county democratic party here in delaware david what's the sense amongst the biden camp right now i think they're really i'm happy and impressed with the turnout there's. huge turnout all over the country delaware here we're seeing record turnout. we've seen more than a quarter of a 1000000 people have already voted here in delaware and it's all about what's to say that this high turnout is going to be in your favor i mean chum's been talking about him being able to reach other elements of the sightseers not just him talking big. well he's always talking big but this is what i mean we had the data that our
9:22 pm
voters are coming out and are voting you know democrats voting today in delaware i can only speak for delaware in specifics but democrats are coming out in huge numbers and republicans not as much so there was a place where joe biden made his name for himself as a politician what's from his success here are you guys hoping he's going to bring on to the national stage particularly when we're looking at some of the key issues that people are voting on we're talking about the economy and the impact of covert but also in terms of race relations that are being a state that has a strong african-american community in terms of its presence and we've seen a lot of people voting along those 2 would lines what's been his history here from a personal perspective do you think can he bring if he was indeed to win these elections i mean from personal history delaware is a very inclusive state we have. a very diverse population here it's very similar to
9:23 pm
the united states and as a whole and you know we have what we call the delaware way which is delaware politicians sort of coming together to get things done and that's really joe is one of those people who has been involved in delaware a lot way for a long time now and so i think he's uniquely positioned to bring us back together after 4 years of literally politics that it is designed to divide us so it's going to be good for america to have a delawarean to bring people back together ok i mean are you talking about the division that i mean delaware is a lot calmer than other places in the u.s. we've seen shops boarded up we've seen fences erected we've heard a lot of kind of charged and loaded terminology being used by some politicians are you concerned that if the elections. arens if the results aren't announced quickly or even if they are are you concerned of some sort of
9:24 pm
post-election turmoil it's it's always a possibility and we've been planning for it and we're you know our attorney general has taken steps to make sure that delaware is prepared whether united states is prepared i don't know but certainly we're not the only ones making these plans to keep things calm whatever happens i mean that's the beauty of america is that we have peaceful transfer of power and i think that's where americans are that's what they want is a peaceful transition of power even if donald trump were to win i think people want . so i guess that is something that people can rally behind regardless of where they stand on the political divide david would cite an official local official here for the democratic party thank you very much for your time with us so there is that cautious optimism that is being felt amongst the. but like we say
9:25 pm
people continue to remember or the memory of 4 years ago is still very fresh in the minds of people here. only for her to lose and that's why they are still canvassing and there is a lot of kind of anticipation to find out exactly whether this time around all the polls on pollsters got it right or whether indeed it will be 4 more years of donald trump. child talking to us from joe biden's home state of delaware he's in wilmington so well thanks very much indeed let's check in with heidi jocasta she's in houston texas where polls show and biden in a very tight race we're going to alan fischer just a moment ago on a suggesting that very al a an unconfirmed poll suggesting possibly that joe biden has not been able to turn texas it is very early days and those as i say are unofficial but it does seem that over the last few elections texas has been moving in
9:26 pm
a blue direction hasn't it. absolutely and that trajectory is undeniable despite what we just heard donald trump say that he expects one calls and from venice victories here in texas but we know that 4 years ago trump did win texas he won by just 9 points i say just because typically a republican candidate for president will have double digit leads over their democratic rival then we saw 2 years later in the heated senate race here the republican incumbent ted cruz winning that race but by only 2 percentage points and now polls show that president trump is leading in texas but by just 3 points which is within the margin of error and that has certainly granted texas this label 1st time the more than 4 decades of being a competitive state and that's also driven a surge in the early vote turnout and voting on election day we know that more
9:27 pm
texans cast a ballot during the early voting period then all the votes cast in 2016 the question is of course which side those votes favor and that leads us to really this this push and pull between the rural areas of texas and the urban hubs like houston where i am right now voters in houston and other cities in texas lean heavily toward democrats and we have seen much for that voter turnout happening in these metropolitan areas but it is also undeniable that there is a rural fire wall that trumps campaign is counting on in texas and enthusiasm for the president to realize is certainly very strong in those rural areas so really it's going to be a numbers game as the results come in later today whether the population growth in these metropolitan areas with more latinos voting for the 1st time and more young voters all heavily favoring democrats whether those new voters out way trying very
9:28 pm
solid supporters or out in the valley. texas countryside that's a joke castro talking to us from houston texas want to bring in andy gallacher he's in miami in the battleground state of florida and he it's generally accepted that whoever wins florida is essentially almost guaranteed a road to the presidency. i'm sorry about that we seem to have lost or audio sound our audio feed from in the meantime let's go to minneapolis minnesota where natasha guy name is. it seems as though that minneapolis. minnesota i should say has pretty regularly delivered an electoral college vote for democrats what's changing. well rob what's happening is that the traditional base of the democratic party is
9:29 pm
gradually shifting to the republican column * you're seeing conservative white working class and unionized members particularly in the northern portion of the state which is mining country gravitating toward the republican party but both of the both of the camps have really in the last final appearances here and here in minnesota use the pandemic to appeal to voters both trump and biden were here on friday and the pandemic loomed large to minnesota right now is considered a red zone because of the surge of coded $1000.00 cases trump told his crowd on friday that if president biden or vice president biden were to become president that quote the whole nation would be on lockdown there would be no christmas no weddings but the future of young americans would be at risk fighting on the other hand criticize trumps response to the pandemic and also faulted him for claiming
9:30 pm
that doctors and nurses are profiting from 19 deaths polls show that more minnesotans believe that biden can adequately address the pandemic then president trump and polls consistently show over the last month that biden is leading trump here in the state of minnesota one poll taken yesterday biden had a 10 percent lead now historically as you mentioned my minnesota. has been a reliable source of support for the democratic party it has 10 electoral electoral college votes and they have not voted for a republican presidential candidate for almost 50 years but in 2016 truck lost by less than 45000 votes it's thought that in his mind it was a missed opportunity so he has campaigned aggressively here and spent quite a bit of money in advertising and the strategy of the republican party has been to
9:31 pm
minimize its losses in progressive urban areas such as the twin cities and the suburbs and really drive voter turnout in more conservative areas there were 19 counties in this state in 2016 that did a pivot so in 2012 in 2008 they voted for president obama but in 2016 they flipped to president trump and trump visited some of those counties hoping to ensure that they voted for him again one thing that you can be sure of rob is that minnesotans are very engaged early voting here started on september 18th and in that early voting period 1900000 votes have been cast and traditionally again minnesota has a very high voter turnout rate the highest in the country in 2016 more than 74 percent of minnesotans turned out to vote so although this polling site that we're at was pretty quiet we've seen a steady trickle today because of the large number of people that have already
9:32 pm
voted that's not exactly a surprise so it's natasha i'm going to i'm talking to us from minneapolis minnesota and that's our show thank you very much indeed well i'm pleased to say we can get back to andy gallacher who's in miami for us we had a couple of problems with us on that idea but i'm glad to see that we've got you back i was just saying that florida really is key to all of this isn't it because whoever manages to get a foothold in florida is pretty much guaranteed a seat in the white house. you know that's been the history here we all remember 20 years ago with hanging chads and 2 weeks of political machinations that decided between bush and gore so this is the biggest battleground state with 29 electoral college votes only california and texas has more and typically this is a state where you can also say reflects the mood of the entire nation the demographics here reflect the entire nation so how florida goes it's an old saying it so goes the election so we already expecting the results to come in pretty early
9:33 pm
because 9000000 floridians have already voted in 2016 when it was all counted up 9500000 people voted in total so that just shows you the. that this shouldn't but we're also watching states like north carolina and georgia have a similar system they can pretty fast as well now if all 3 of those states go to someone like vice president biden that's going to make donald trump's route to the why i was that magic to 70 very very difficult indeed so this is as ever that vital states for both these candidates so people will be watching very closely the polls close at 7 o'clock in the majority of florida and our lights in the florida panhandle which is a pretty conservative area so an hour and a half after those polls close we should start to get the preliminary results and they could be a big indicates a as to how this 2020 presidential election will go i've never been talking to our
9:34 pm
correspondents around the u.s. and some of them have been telling us that people in their states have been concerned about its possibility of process and possibly even violence after the results of the election is known what are you seeing where you are. well i can tell you just up the road in the midtown area of miami many of the stores are boarded up and this neighborhood you don't really see that i mean i spent as many of the other correspondents have a lot of time talking to people about the election and i don't think there's a real sense that there will be violence here in the state of florida but you know that's something that could always happen but it all depends on the results of this election i think what's important here is this state has been very efficient and the counting of early voting things have all gone along without too many problems the worst of postal ballots found on the floor of an post office in a nearby neighborhood to hear but it feels like they're really on top of this i think the important thing for the american public is the results for
9:35 pm
a state like this that is so crucial should come in very quickly and so on to go bring us up to date from miami in florida. well the us has a unique way of electing its president it's called the electoral college system that can be contentious because it does know was reflect who gets the most votes each state is given a share of electors which depends on the population so the most populous states like california texas and new york have got more votes entire nation wide electoral college is made up of 538 members that means a candidate needs 270 to win the states have a winner take all system the count of who gets the most votes gets all the electoral college votes for that state except maine and nebraska they split theirs now in america it's possible to get fewer votes from the population and still win the election in 2016 hillary clinton got almost 3000000 more votes than donald
9:36 pm
trump but trump one states with high electoral vote counts and go past 270 before she could ok let's bring in spencer kimball from boston he's the director of emerson college polling thank you very much indeed for being with us give us an idea of what changes or what noticeable events you've seen in the polls that we've been watching over the last few months. so one of the states that we've been looking at is georgia in georgia is a traditional red state that mitt romney the republican nominee in 2012 won by about 9 percentage points donald trump won it by 5 percentage points what we've seen over the last 4 years is an increase in registration of african-american black and hispanic voters and actually a decrease in white voters in georgia and georgia is one of those states where i believe 16 electoral votes that could swing to joe biden tonight and that would be
9:37 pm
the result of years of voter registration drives to kind of change that state we're seeing a similar pattern in texas there's a large growing population of hispanic voters that generally vote democratic and because of that we're seeing a swing in a state that went for 9 points last time to donald trump to a race that we think it's a tossup today. took us through for those of us sitting outside the u.s. i'm watching this talk us through where we should be looking to trying to get some sort of an indication of what the end result is going to be. well i think as andy mentioned florida is a key state to be looking at because of that older population the conventional wisdom is that the coded 900 pandemic has shifted that older reliable republican both a little bit to joe biden and if that's the case then you're going to see in florida . joe biden doing very well even when the panhandle comes in he will not get as as
9:38 pm
destroyed as when hillary clinton was there and then you have a state like arizona that's another state in our in the united states that has an older population i guess we're seeing a a movement towards the democrat in our polling and that would suggest that the coded $1000.00 pandemic may have impacted older voters attitudes on who they vote for this time now both sides have been casting doubts over the mail in votes how likely is it do you think that we're going to see some sort of court action over the result well if you believe the polling the ones that have it up at $89.00 points i don't think that they'll 'd be any contention over the vote counting because joe biden would have a significant lead in all of these states however if it does tighten and we see florida go to donald trump and we see georgia north carolina stay with donald trump well then i think we could be in for a long couple of weeks of vote counting in
9:39 pm
