it's a very sad moment to me this is a very sad moment and we will win this and we as far as i'm concerned we already have one so i just want to thank you was and was i want to thank you for her what i want to thank all of the people that worked with us and mr vice president. say a few words please. was was was was thanks was the was and i want to join you in thanking more than 60000000 americans. who have already cast their vote for 4 more years for president donald trump i was all of those continue to be counted we're going to remain vigilant as president said the right to photo has been at the
10:31 am
center of our democracy since the founding of this nation of we're going to protect the integrity of the vote but i really believe with all my heart with the extraordinary margins mr president that you've inspired in the states that you just described in the way that you launched this movement across the country to make america great again i truly do believe as you do that we are on the road to victory and we will make america great again and again i want thank you america great again and again i was thinking thank you. that was donald trump as saying we will win this in as far as i am concerned we have won this of course is not in his gift to declare victory but it was pretty much a victory speech he said cold events incredible phenomenal success he said he won
10:32 am
states he did not expect to win saying that the democrats cannot catch us saying that it was still possible for them and that when he pennsylvania michigan and wisconsin as a crucial blue state said let's go to our white house correspondent company committee so what do you make of that force if you would. there are a lot of things to be in that speech to unpack i think the 1st one is that it's very clear donald trump is prepared to challenge what ever result ultimately does not favor him all the way to the u.s. supreme court and this is why we saw the president when the death of ruth bader ginsburg a liberal justice on the supreme court you saw that hasty appointment and confirmation of a.b. kone barrett to the high court because what it does shift the makeup of the court in donald trump's favor and this is very useful if you feel there is a closer contested election and you need a ruling to maintain the white house that's number one number 2 i think it's very
10:33 am
interesting the wording the president used to see outlined his path to victory 1st of all shrugging off the fact that he lost to arizona or at least some networks believe that he has to joe biden the president saying that well i don't even really need it because i won in so many other places but he said we repeatedly in other words it was just his loss it was the american people's loss and a movement in order to try and get the american people on his side and to bill and strengthen his case that this is an election that is potentially being stolen because that's what the u.s. president has accused he has said very plainly and simply there are a group of people he's alluding to democrats who are trying to disenfranchise we won't stand for it the president saying very clearly that he believes he was winning and that insinuating that the media or the networks that are following this race decided not to call this in his favor we did see some areas of the united
10:34 am
states in key battleground states where they've stopped counting for the evening and will pick up again on wednesday this is all part of what the president says is an effort to try and see that he does not win why would this matter to the president in terms of the vote counting. well the president wants to stop the vote counting today and has tried unsuccessfully already because we know that in person voting favors republicans in person voting favors donald trump whereas democrats were the ones that were mailing in their votes that's why they want to see the votes continue to be counted potentially allowing joe biden to claim victory so overall this is not encouraging for the american people we've reported for so many years how polarized the united states is things have only got worse from this point is that this has become can because now that the very definition if you like of a contested election it could be days before we actually have any conclusion to or
10:35 am
even weeks any conclusion to litigation and if you look at the kind of atmosphere there is in the u.s. as you say it's not what the nation needs right now. it's absolutely not what the nation needs right now i was even fearful as i was watching and waiting for the president that people were going to start forming behind me that hasn't happened it's actually still relatively calm but just the fact that the president came out and i think the fact that it's the middle of the night here is the only thing that's perhaps preventing it because i think when people wake up to this news in the united states that the president is in fighting form they're not going to be happy so there's already heightened concerns of civil unrest but it's very clear that the u.s. president has every intention of battling this in the courts we also know that it's true on both sides whether republican or democrat that both sides have been amassing legal teams prepared for this the u.s. president was signaling early on that he may not accept the results of the u.s.
10:36 am
election and that he would be willing to fight democrats are certainly not stupid and have prepared for this is well lit in fact we heard from hillary clinton she recommended that joe biden should under no circumstances concede to donald trump which is exactly what he did he spoke to his supporters saying that that he is very optimistic so it's clear that there is a fight a battle and i have to tell you i covered the election of 2000 when between george w. bush and al gore a drag on it wasn't until mid december that a winner was ultimately declared but that really was the start of deep divisions and anxiety in the united states that has only intensified and i fear that if we proceed in the same manner as we did back in the year 2000 that does not bode well for the united states or it could be thanks for the time being speech a bit later well with so many legal questions floating around and let's bring in
10:37 am
richard painter who can help us with this the former chief ethics lawyer for president george w. bush he's also professor of the university of minnesota law school and joins us now from some pool so richard painted 1st on this is trying to impart this a little for the donald trump saying we won't vote counting to stall tell us about the produces what legislation will ensue from the law is already. well the laws very simple set people vote and then we kept the books and we kept every single vote and that's the way we do it and in pennsylvania they have to count a lot more vote a lot of the votes in allegheny county and they are around pittsburgh and also in philadelphia had not yet been counted those are currently democratic areas so we do not know and something is going to go and the same with michigan and wisconsin a number of states but we count every single vote we don't simply stop counting the
10:38 am
votes that's the way they do it at the tater ship and that's not going to happen in august it's about donald trump thinks he's going to get the supreme court to stop the counting of the votes he's obviously talking rubbish so we don't know how this is going to sort out. and there are a number of different. ways. you know the electoral math could. go in favor biking or trump and i'm not going to try to put it is just in there richard because not in the sense that the war is simple and the door is the way you would have thought but there are there are legions of lawyers working on this now and donald trump will be trying very hard to ensure that vote counting doesn't stop is a paul and he roots that his lawyers can take to succeed in that action. well they can try and make a try for example to get a republican controlled legislature in the state of pennsylvania to send the
10:39 am
electoral votes to donald trump even if joe biden wins and when yet after the cow they could try to do that but i believe that it would likely fail in the courts in the state courts and ultimately if the supreme court this is a very different situation than bush versus gore where there was only one state and they said several recounts one file in the spring court said that they need to stop i didn't agree with that decision and bush versus gore but still what's happening here is the president united states is now saying alexion none that he wants to stop the counting of the votes we haven't had any recounts much less finished counting the votes the 1st time and many of these are mail in ballots and they have in many states they can rock up to 2 or 3 days from now and still be counted under state law and i cannot see the united states supreme court overturning state well on that simply does donald trump wants a 2nd term richard thanks for that help ian smith guide us through these this legal
10:40 am
minefield this looks like his opponents thanks very much for painting that with well kimonos here again once again the moment we stand right now. i just don't even know where to start it's just been an extraordinary nice and will be an extraordinary few days as well make. so as of the point of donald trump finishing his speech which was around 2 30 in the morning in washington only 730 g.m.t. this was the state of the race have a look at our map showing you exactly how it looked at that point 22522138 is a 12 electoral college vote lead to joe biden and this map on this map nothing has changed from 26 states no state has been flipped and we know how crucial it is that states were flipped particularly for joe biden so let's come
10:41 am
back out here and have a look at what's left the states which are too close to call again by this point starting in pennsylvania with its 20 electoral college votes so important part of the blue wall what was the blue wall in the north and absolutely crucial for joe biden now what's also crucial is that the vote counting is taking longer there and will probably go into maybe the next 2 days we'll have to wait and see the next stage which is too close to call is michigan not far along part of that same area 16 electoral college votes there and we can add wisconsin in as well with its 10 now with those 3 states if joe biden was able to flip those back that would put him over the top in all important idea of flipping back states which were democrat and turned republican in the last election the other remaining too close to call states are north carolina with its 15 electoral college votes and also not
10:42 am
far down in the south there georgia interesting is a potential swing state this year another 16 electoral college votes up for grabs there and. finally arizona which could end up being incredibly important the type of state which joe biden's team has targeted they needed to hit the urban areas particularly around phoenix and joe biden was doing that at this point so the state of the race once again this is how it looks to 25 to 13. extraordinary numbers on. nights that quite frankly it's extraordinary make extraordinary i'm starting to lose my word that was extraordinary is the word isn't it is extraordinary how tight it's become from all thank you very much let's take this on let's speak to mark jacobson who's a former advisor to u.s. defense secretary ashton carter now assistant dean at the maxwell school of
10:43 am
citizenship and public affairs at syracuse university he is in washington mark jacobson we heard from donald trump saying that the democrats are trying to disenfranchise those who voted for him looks like we're heading into a whole world of litigation this is exactly the kind of scenario many were very frightened of has none. and i think one of the 1st elections i stayed up all night for was 2000 and are waking up every few hours where the lead had changed and you know you had a declaration of victory concession speech and then repudiation of those but this is fundamentally different what we heard from president shrum a little while ago will go down in american history as one of those volatile attempts at stealing an election. we've seen in our history i can't think of a time that's been more dangerous for the united states probably since the since
10:44 am
861 just before the u.s. civil war and i'm not suggesting any sort of violence or anything like that but what i'm just saying is that this repudiation of the whole idea of represented democracy that everyone votes and that you count all of what i think is a little bit heartening on the other hand is that you're seeing republican members such as adam kinzinger millon oyo coming out and saying oh hold on a 2nd here that's not it at all also if you listen to the words of vice president pence he didn't he did not support anything the president said there if you listen very clearly but i think this is what people were worried about this is why stores are boarded up in washington d.c. and other places around the country because if trump continues along these lines people will be angry even if the process has not had a chance to play out in the courts and how long do you think it will take for the process to play out because we know where we are right now into the trump is
10:45 am
suggesting that voting should be stopped immediately. right well and that's the key thing when has boating in the modern era ever ended on election night 200-2000 or even 2016 votes were still being counted even though the president trump and gotten over that to 70 hurdle for the you know the votes still work counted so i say this is an observer someone who is likely to be watching your network and others over the next few days it's possible this takes until the weekend it's still clear that there is a path to victory for the vice president biden things are decisive in in arizona wisconsin michigan and pennsylvania won't matter that said i still suspect the president will fight even in pennsylvania isn't key but as one of your commentators suggested earlier what the united states does not need is something that drags out
10:46 am
into the summer that's not good for the country we're much more polarized than we were in 2000 and we also have to worry about the fact that we're still in the middle of a pandemic and despite what we saw in the white house east room there with people who are packed together without masks we are about to hit what both dr patchy and dr burke said said is the most dangerous time we are going to hit that that 2nd big wave we're going to be hitting it in flu season and people are tired of the restrictions there's a laziness when it comes to taking the right measures and that could spell doom as we get ready to cross that quarter of a 1000000 dead threshold in the united states but you say it is possible we could have resolution by the weekend but it is also possible that we may not have resolution by the weekend it could go on for weeks it could go on into december it couldn't. a very unsatisfying answer from me i apologize but yes look
10:47 am
i think the hope now is that we see some something decisive in the next 12 to 24 hours in terms of those vote counts in wisconsin michigan arizona now on this i believe the secretaries of state in pennsylvania and michigan have said look it's going to be a day or 2 because you're dealing with something very important here it's not just people who chose to mail in their ballots because they felt like it it was a pop out of public health the sesame so we didn't have a jam packed voting stations it's also military and overseas ballots that may not get counted right away and you know look if you if you take a look at what you were showing earlier in terms of the map i mean those percentages of votes in urban areas that have yet to be counted michigan pennsylvania could flip those states from red to blue and i suspect that's exactly why the president doesn't want those votes counted and frankly his his overt
10:48 am
attempt at stealing me election would make stalin or khrushchev blush. the way that he's going about this right now jacob said they appreciate that thanks very much indeed for your analysis of this fragile situation. let all across now to california to los angeles in fact and rob reynolds and rob we should talk about this not so much california that's going to the democrats with the many electoral votes but let's talk about arizona and nevada get us up to date there if you would . well the voting in arizona and in nevada are going on the votes are being counted and. former vice president biden is pretty far ahead in both of those states so those look as if they will be dropping into his column although counting will continue in especially those mail in and absentee votes that we've been discussing all night and indeed
10:49 am
for 4 weeks now i was struck by the difference between biden's speech and president trump speech with biden saying let's be patient keep the faith and the votes will continue to be counted in pennsylvania and elsewhere and president trump seeming to believe that the fact that television networks didn't declare him the victor meant that that was some sort of an official repudiation of his candidacy and saying again that he didn't want any of the votes counted it wasn't anyone finding some ballots at 4 o'clock in the morning and then counting them also of bizarre contrast with the vice president pence who referred to the ongoing votes being counted so where are we now well the votes will still be counted you're commentators and expert guests have weighed in on the possibility of
10:50 am
litigation and. the historical context for this let's talk about what might happen when the sun comes up tomorrow in different parts of the country has president trump given a sort of signal to his most fervent at heron's some of whom are are armed and have shown themselves to be. encouraged by his pronouncements at times will they will they create civil unrest will there be. the other hand civil unrest in places like portland oregon where people have been battling with police and with far right wing organizations for months and months now i think that the president's speech has increased the chances of something like that happening it's been remarkably calm during the election day itself which is now of course voting the polling places are closed but there was very few there
10:51 am
were very few instances of any kind of intimidation or disturbances or anything serious in that manner that had been feared by law enforcement by the intelligence agencies here in the united states but that didn't materialize tomorrow unfortunately might be a different story if the president is suggesting that he has it here and see his his biggest supporters get riled up and try to demonstrate a war or protest against what he's calling an attempt to steal the election from him. so we'll have to see. yet we'll see what happens when the sun comes up as you say this is the kind of scenario a lot of people were made from because i was discussing a little bit on the roof the time being thanks very much indeed let's look into some foreign policy now and throughout his presidency donald trump is saying about the european union is a threat to u.s.
10:52 am
interests and stalin says peas and supporters it has on surprisingly a good many you need it's about has more money the u.s. election matters more than ever for europe. but your biggest competitor the biggest follow globally right now or i think we have a lot of this i think the european union is a foe what they do to us in trade the relationship between the u.s. and europe has never been straightforward but for decades they've seen each other as alloys under donald trump's presidency there's been a big shift in both the language and policy. on trade threats of turned into action u.s. tariffs on almost $8000000000.00 worth of a you good civil ready started to hit they were imposed over europe subsidies to aircraft manufacturer us in a parallel dispute involving american aid for us from boeing the e.u. won the right to hit back with terrorists on imports from the states brussels is expected to hold fire until after the u.s. election on an actual trade deal between the economic giants seems
10:53 am
a distant prospect a win for joe biden might make things easier i do think that the toll of the talks is going to change i mean i don't need to elaborate on why it is extremely difficult well to say impossible to have any dealings with the white house under trump but i think if there's somebody reasonable then we may still have different interests or different viewpoints but we will negotiate we will discuss like you know civilized grown ups and friends a series of political disputes is also heightened transatlantic tensions recurring theme for president trump has been nato and the idea that the u.s. effectively subsidises european members of the defense alliance so germany's delinquent they've been delinquent for years and they owe nato billions of dollars and they have to pay it and when trump announced he was quitting a cold war era nuclear arms treaty french president emanuel michael called for a true european army saying the e.u.
10:54 am
needed to quote protect itself from china russia and even the united states one senior official in the obama administration believes continuing this war of words could cause real damage it's a deep concern here to not be able to credibly rely on europe and go to europe on a consistent basis and deal with issues that affect us and the q one in recent years on terrorism and the flow of terrorists in and out of syria in the islamic state that require collective action to defeat. islamic state network among e.u. citizens the u.s. is images it's an all time low part of the reason is donald trump's response to the ongoing covert 19 pandemic well major changes in areas like trade and defense could be a long way off whoever is in the white house come january is likely to face calls to work more closely with europe on combating the coronavirus nadine barber al-jazeera well we have big developments major projection yes thank you nic i actually thought
10:55 am
the last chat i had with you might have been the last for the night given it's now 3 in the morning on the u.s. east coast but look at this joe biden has the projected winner of 11 electoral college votes in the state of arizona this is so significant on so many levels not least of all the fact that this is the 1st state to flip in this 2020 alexion look at the popular vote in the end he's done it by 5 percent with 84 percent reporting at this stage that is enough for the associated press to make that call and put it in the column for joe biden this is a massive massive turn in the state of this race let's look at the state of this race when we add those electoral college votes on to joe biden's total $236.00 puts him. why can't i do the math quickly 34 electoral college votes away from to 70 now if i come in. he doesn't necessarily need to win
10:56 am
wisconsin now he still needs the likes of pennsylvania michigan nevada i think could be interesting here as well 6 electoral college votes in nevada which you would expect to go blue as well that would help him as well this is a big boost for joe biden's bid for the presidency for the white house because he can now take one of those blue wall states wisconsin out of the equation and still win the white house again i'll hop out the way so you can see the numbers the time is approaching 0800 hours g.m.t. which is 3 pm on the u.s. east coast joe biden 236 electoral college votes donald trump 213 i think i thought i thought we were done for the night given given the hour it gets more extraordinary and it really is this is this is the one we've been talking about for so long if if joe biden could pick up those urban areas in and around
10:57 am
phoenix because they account for 40 percent of the whole state and he's done that he's done it the flips happened and he's flipped one and. it's just so now all eyes on the blue all the blue will exactly it's all about that now ok thanks very much. so the media and social media have become war zones during donald trump's presidency from richard ginsburg who's presenter of a media analysis program for the city post. donald trump's inauguration set the tone from that day when he flat out lied about the size of the crowd it was clear that the u.s. news media did not know what to make of the president's on again off again relationship with the truth series of well we have to label it untruths we now have a case where he's made another charge and he has not got evidence why are we surprised that such a racist there until donald trump came along the white house press corps had been reluctant to accuse any american president of lying that is no longer the case the
10:58 am
washington post has counted how many times trump has lied or misled americans the number is more than 22000 forcing journalists to call it what it is this president is a serial liar and he serially lie tonight how do you defend 22000 false wittes by attacking and calling the media outlets reporting on them fake news that dishonest media nobody has any idea how corrupt the media is just like it's a nasty question one false story after another you are the enemy of the people are you know why it's so quiet with this administration constantly misleading citizens journalists have grown ever more reliant on leaks from disgruntled white house insiders ex insiders turned pundits or ex cabinet officials turned authors some of those leaks have proven to be misleading and have come back to bite the news outlets that bought into them remember russia gate the allegations that russia might have been gathering material video of mr trump that could be used to blackmail him stories of russian meddling in the 2016 election and allegations the

trump campaign and the kremlin had worked together complete with that sexy cold war angle with too much for news channels not named fox to resist the eventual retractions were damaging since they lent the president's fake news narrative some credibility we actually correcting a story that we have been reporting throughout the day today the us media landscape divided before donald trump was elected has since grown far more polarized in one corner the. liberal side including outlets like c.n.n. m.s.n. b.c. and the new york times in the other fox news broadcast upstarts like one american news and conservative platform such as the christian broadcasting network and the washington times which oh they're resurgent audiences to the president time and again americans have seen those rival journalistic camps take the same new story and spin it in entirely different directions the covert 1000 story has proven to be much harder for fox and its ilk to manipulate since there is no way to spin

infection rates and mortality figures if donald trump loses this election prepare to see some journalists claiming at least some of the credit calling it a victory for the 4th estate some of them will be justified to a certain extent there are news outlets that have been locking horns with the president for years producing some adversarial quality 'd journalism along the way but until 2020 they failed to really move the needle in fact fewer americans trust their news media today than in 2016 what it took to sink donald trump in the polls was covert 19 and the science hard data it doesn't lie and try as he might the president has no answer for that. it is a wait 100 g. .
