context these are the same storytelling around the biggest issues but they're usually do with. 0. hello there i'm just on the attack and this is the news hour live from coming up in the next 60 minutes we were getting ready to win this election frankly we did win this over. on a knife edge donald trump falsely claims victory in the u.s. presidential election despite the results still yet to be announced in several battleground states. where his rival joe biden says he believes he still will win and is currently $32.00 electoral college votes shy of outright victory. with the
4:01 pm
tallying of votes still ongoing trump is threatening to go to the supremes court to stop the counting biden says every vote must be respected. and another news ethiopia's prime minister declares a state of emergency in the region following a deadly attack on a military base. i'm joining us roscoe with sports argentina football hero diego maradona has had successful surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. all the race to the white house has become incredibly tight hours after the polls closed no candidate has so far secured enough electoral college votes to win but that hasn't stopped both candidates being confident of victory despite millions of votes that a still uncounted donald trump past threatened to go to the supreme court something that biden's team is saying they are ready to challenge the whole. total vote count
4:02 pm
could still take several days while we have a team of reporters for you again the south jamal allison biden's home state that i am and alan fisheye is in washington d.c. for us but fast often jordan takes a look back at how these last few hours have unfolded. shortly after 2 am on wednesday president donald trump told his supporters and the nation that democrats were trying to steal his election day victory and trump said he was suing to hold on to the oval office so we'll be going to the u.s. supreme court we want all voting to stand but with the vote count still unfinished in at least 10 states trump's claim a victory was dubious earlier in the night trump's democratic rival joe biden urged his supporters to as he put it keep the faith i heard tell your night we believe we're on track to win this election.
4:03 pm
we will because of the odd pressure down early voting a mail in vote is going to take a while we're going to have to be patient until way on the hard work of tally of votes is finished it's long been standard practice in u.s. elections to count all the ballots no matter how many days it takes this year the delay is considerable given the more than 100000000 ballots being cast weeks ahead of time as well as the millions of votes cast on election day swing states such as michigan and georgia announced late on tuesday that they would resume counting on wednesday morning and at least one swing state pennsylvania said it might not be done until friday that state's governor pushed back against president donald trump's accusations that counting ballots after election day is illegal we may not know the results today as a result but i encourage all. all of us to take
4:04 pm
a deep breath in and saying just be patient which most important that we hear is that we have accurate results and that every vote is counted even if it takes a little longer for news organizations had biden ahead with more than 200 electoral college votes but the winning candidate needs 270 to be declared the winner is that likely won't happen before wednesday at the earliest roselyn jordan al-jazeera. santa maria has a breakdown of all the numbers so far this is the state of the race 238 to joe biden 213 to donald trump it's very tight it's very close and even though clearly joe biden has a lead and is closer to 70 than his rival there are paths for both candidates at this point because there are 5 states left and we're going to run you through them all too close to call at this stage 10 electoral college votes in wisconsin part of
4:05 pm
the so-called blue belts of course which donald trump picked up 4 years ago that includes pennsylvania 20 electoral college votes which would be vital for either candidate to pick up the presidency at the end of well whichever date ends up being we're also looking at michigan in that part of the country with its 16 electoral college votes completing the blue belt there important probably more for joe biden at this stage than it is for donald trump there are 2 other states to think about and that is north carolina with 15 electoral college votes and also the state of georgia. with that 16 votes southern states donald trump would be eyeing those ones up to try to get him over the line with some extra pick ups along the way that might include nevada with 6 electoral college votes which we would expect to go blue but then you can always expect the unexpected county so
4:06 pm
a final look at the state of the race 238-2213 those states in yellow the ones that lifts the swing states the battleground states the states which will ultimately decide this 2020 election that's now speak to alan fischer who is in washington d.c. for us and just outside the white house allan no blue way that many democrats were hoping for but as come all the same there still a number of paths potentially to victory one well a number of which could include wisconsin which could get cold at any moment. exactly i mean i've been in communication with someone who's closely connected to the biden campaign there are no having a bad day by any means they still see a path to 270 and wisconsin is certainly part of that we've also had from michigan in the last hour they have started some of the absentee ballots we're talking about hundreds of thousands of votes that's important because 1st of all the absentee
4:07 pm
ballots the mail in vote tend to favor the democrats the 2nd thing is that they come from a lot of democratic areas so we're not saying all those votes will be democratic but they would tend to favor joe biden so if you get wisconsin and michigan. arizona to that which looks possible and probably likely divided that and buying joe biden is almost $270.00 he doesn't need to win pennsylvania as much as he would like to and he doesn't win to need to win north carolina so if he takes the great lakes states he's almost but there's still a lot of work to be done before we get there we were saying 24 hours ago the results come on election night and people accepted that and then got very excited by saying why is there no result on election night this is going to take a couple of days to sort out the concern of course for the democrats at the moment is that donald trump me go to the supreme court you don't automatically go to the
4:08 pm
supreme court you've got to go to the lower courts 1st the supreme court then decides to hear your case donald trump has outlined what his case would actually be illegal to continue. after the election day he might try and disqualify a few ballots in some key states like this a couple of weeks ago saying that he might well go to the court to challenge the result that's why he said he would like to have 9 justices on the supreme court why he. nomination to the supreme court but there's no guarantee that the supreme court would. i think we rule with donald trump so everyone across the united states and from what i gather from my twitter feed as well everyone of course the world just needs to take a breath this is going to work its way through the system and it will be done maybe in a couple of days but we could actually get results that make joe biden the president by the end of the day he could lose 2 states and that means donald trump retains
4:09 pm
the white house things could become clearer in the next couple of hours everyone just. breath indeed alan fischer there for us in washington d.c. thanks so much allan i want to dig now into some of the legal questions here with amy pope she is a former u.s. deputy homeland security adviser to president obama she's now a partner at the international fam sellings in london and she joins us from there now amy i do want to start with the obvious question which i think is really important for us to understand can president trump stop the vote counting no i mean is the basic answer he can raise all sorts of litigation but he has to have a valid basis for doing so in order to get his claim heard and counting votes after the election day is not one of those you do have to cast your vote on election day that has been litigated but the basis for it to stop the counting that's just not really credible so i mean if he did want to go ahead with some sort of legal
4:10 pm
challenge can you talk us through what the process might be here and and some potential legal grounds if he did try to push ahead. there are there are actually pending lawsuits around many many of the issues any one of which could proceed for example there are questions about whether it's appropriate to continue to count votes at 3 if they arrive after election day that was litigated through the supreme court they were allowed to go forward but there were some basis that the judges basically reserved judgment on some issues so that could be litigated likewise the manner in which people voted there you probably saw there was a lot of press around drive through voting in texas i would expect other kinds of challenges around anything that's a bit nontraditional whether those succeed it's fairly unlikely in general the courts will want to make sure that people can vote. ready. i mean i do
4:11 pm
want to take up the question of pennsylvania i believe that we have lost amy we will try to get have back now and very shortly later on in the show but for now let's speak to jim he isn't delaware station in wilmington jamal there must be great disappointment there after what all the polls had seemed to promise. well disappointment here because they were hoping for maybe a much more favorable turnout however it's not bunya and as we heard from the democratic candidate joe biden when he addressed party supporters and the media late last night he still believes there is a path for him to ultimately end up at the white house and what the focus is on now are on those 3 main states which they always said from the beginning were going to essentially make or break biden's campaign in wisconsin michigan and pennsylvania
4:12 pm
michigan coming into the early hours donald trump had a 1.3.2 percent lead that's been reduced to less than half a percentage point now and when you look at where the votes are going to be counted from particularly in kind of cosmopolitan areas the detroit area there is an expectancy there were a hopefulness that by then well actually overtake trump there wisconsin is another place obviously and that would bring it down to the much contentious state of. pennsylvania but at the same time aside from that it's a small disappointment or a more maybe sizable disappointment that they haven't got that blue wave that they said was going to sweep across the united states there is some sort of anger and frustration at the comments that have come out from the president there was a statement that was put out by biden's ahead of the campaign and he said that.
4:13 pm
they believe they were out rather they were outraged at what trump said and they believe that this was an effort to centrally strip the american people of their democratic rights and this is something that has been a consistent message coming out from here that trumps policies over the past 4 years have eroded american democracy and now what he's trying to do by preventing votes counted by preventing everybody from having their say is a naked attempt and that's the exact words that they use to essentially get rid of the democratic rights of millions of americans when you're looking at such a high turnout one of the ngos here said that more than 160000000 americans voted that might not be the highest turnout when you look at elections elsewhere but it's definitely higher than 2060 and it shows that there is a significant increase in the amount of voter participation in terms of political kind of participation among support relation amat is why the democrats are saying that must be respected every vote must be counted and it's not over until that
4:14 pm
happens. that for us on the ground and biden's home state of delaware thanks so much tomorrow well i do want to pick up on some of what jamal is saying without guess refinished get any any there are already questions now being raised about the extension of that vote count pennsylvania it was already agreed and that's a state that as tamala saying could determine this election where is that process. so right now the state is allowed to count the votes that are coming in after election day and that's one of the reasons why we haven't yet seen an outcome if pennsylvania goes for either candidate it significantly increases the likelihood that they'll win what i and to supply though is that if it really comes down to just this one state and that is the tiebreaker then we will see increased litigation from both sides to make sure that the votes that they think should or should not be counted or are allowed to come into play well the latest supreme
4:15 pm
court justice any kind about has always throughout her whole confirmation process has tried to be very explicit about her independence from the white house do you think if this does become supreme court math of do you have faith that she will maintain objectivity. i really have the most faith in the chief justice who was rip appointed by a republican but he has really put a lot of emphasis on the importance of the judiciary maintaining its independence and i think that's absolutely critical here and he'll want to demonstrate that the supreme court operates independently from the president so that's really where i think the emphasis will come from. aren't a lot of bases to invalidate an election despite the fact that many many people are going to try it's really about protecting the right to vote in the 1st place that such a critical part of it because they need legitimacy of a an election really comes down to public perception right how did it how much do
4:16 pm
you think all of this drama has eaten away at the credibility of this poll in the eyes of voters themselves. i think that is president trump's intent here he wants to undermine the credibility of the election and he's been doing it really for months now when the polls started to show that his support was slipping he started to suggest that the election might not be fairly decided i think that's a strategy that he's fairly deliberately employing as a way to undermine an outcome that is not in his favor any pope there the former u.s. deputy homeland security adviser to president obama and also a lawyer he's given us some great analysis here thanks so much anything joining us on out of their pleasure one of the states that joe biden has won is california it has the largest number of electoral college votes with 55 has more from los angeles on by than success on the west coast today. arizona became one of
4:17 pm
the bright spots in the biden campaign and for democrats in general when they were able to flip it from the republican column to the democratic column a state's 11 electoral votes will go to joe biden and arizona voters also elected a new democratic senator ousting the incumbent republican otherwise however the high hopes by the democrats to flip the state of texas for example came to naught and as of our latest tabulation of results from the state of the vada joe biden's lead there has been shrinking. americans who have endured sometimes a rancorous and bitter and confusing campaign full of heated rhetoric and. sometimes difficult
4:18 pm
debates and other events in the midst of a terrible coronavirus pandemic will now be waking up throughout the land to find their the boy house really in a state of limbo without any clear winner until more of the votes can be counted another state with a lawn chair of electoral college votes is texas how does a cast of his and she stand where president donald trump has been declared the winner. well that's no surprise here that president trump one texas however his margin of victory at just 6 percent as nearly all of the votes have been counted that is a surprise because it confirms that texas for the 1st time in a long time is a competitive state for democrats that margin of victory is smaller than any other president republican presidential candidate in texas in modern history and you can
4:19 pm
see that that translated to tension on the ground here as both parties fought for every vote now the question is whether or not trump most fervent supporters who are the ones that delivered him this texas victory who reside in the rural countryside of texas where some townies have gone for trump and more than 90 percent margins of victory for the president is how they will react to the president's latest statements from the white house in his premature death corporation a victory and indicating that he would contest the election result that is not in his favor some of these most rural parts of texas are home to right wing militias and that's that's had authorities in texas city is preparing for civil unrest in the morning when voters here in texas wake up to the news to hear their president's
4:20 pm
comments certainly there has already been tension on the ground in the last week of campaigning where we saw trump supporters surrounding a band biden campaign bus nearly forcing it off the road and there certainly been verbal altercation between supporters of biden and from outside of polling locations so it still remains to be seen exactly how tight since may react to this to the comments of president trump that was were spoken in the middle of the night and certainly tensions are high once they wake in the morning. well another big state that the democrats had hoped to flip is florida unlike texas at voting for donald trump and you got a guy is in miami with more. when you look at where i'm standing now this is miami dade county and you look at how biden did among the latino vote here and it was extremely poor when you compare it to how hillary clinton did with the same community back in 2016 it seems to me 5 that the president's push to
4:21 pm
paint joe biden as a socialist works we already knew that about a 1000000 of the cuban americans that lived in a city like this in miami would likely vote republican but it seems like a lot of latino and hispanic voters who didn't vote for trump last time did so this time now the margin by which trump won this state was still pretty slim in 2016 he won by about 112000 votes it's about 350000 this time around but the picture is very clear. this was a state that trump needed to keep to keep is the hopes alive in this presidential election to get another 4 years in the white house 29 electoral call of college votes really do matter for the president well that's not speak to bill schneider he's a public policy professor at george mason university and he joins us now from washington
4:22 pm
d.c. bell thanks for being with us great to speak to you on this rather significant day and we always were aware that we might not have a result today unless there was a huge by the landslide are you surprised that that didn't happen i am a bit surprised because it looked like biden was ahead look trump was not winning a single pre-election poll not one was going coming for trump. and still not be the big national group is slightly. going to trump but it looks like competent good chance of winning the electoral college now well as andy was saying mitt trump did make huge gains with cuban and hispanic voters in florida even despite his anti immigrant rhetoric how did that happen. it happened because you go on of latino voters particularly cuban americans and venezuelan americans who come from countries that have socialist governments and the very word socialism is a mathematician them they get very angry if you are talk about a socialist in power like many immigrant groups that have come to the united states
4:23 pm
from countries ruled by left wing dictators they republican at least in the 1st generation florida is not the latino vote is not majority human anymore but there are a lot of new groups salvadorans and been as well and who come to this country they abhor the word socialism and the poor are a republican or right wing candidate at least in the 1st generation their children and grandchildren usually vote like. mexican americans and other latino us when the 1st generation it's all about foreign policy and bill it also looks like trump held on to a significant amount of backfires in places like georgia as well as native americans in north carolina get the pulse does get it wrong on the race front. apparently yes they did get it wrong they might not have polled enough of them they could have been a last minute swing to trump among those voters but critically the latino vote is
4:24 pm
it looks like it was a last minute swing but this is a real showdown between what i call the old america and the new america there's a big difference here by area rule areas came out one of them is for trump and there's a big difference by education well educated voters supported joe biden those with college degrees the less well educated voters supporting donald trump that difference has been growing very very sharply bill we've been talking a lot about pathways to victory and i want to talk about wisconsin because it's really on a knife edge and we do expect results today really any moment now by my count if biden wins wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes to get to 270 he'll also need to take even michigan or pennsylvania in the but it will all georgia and he would really need just one of those other states along with nevada and in order to cross the line so in your mind do you think it's looking pretty good for about. i don't think so right now trump is ahead in michigan and pennsylvania and pennsylvania has
4:25 pm
to be the important state here is the largest state with the electoral votes still how it would be a deep disappointment for biden a pennsylvania goes to chunk there are a lot of rumors in pennsylvania between the 2 major major cities of from the gulf ian kinsler and there's room voters i mean to you you pennsylvania are doing what they've done before into the 2000 and. 16 they're coming out for donald trump they defend the old values the old america and they could turn pennsylvania to trump which would be a bitter defeat for joe biden because he was born and grew up in pennsylvania and of course we are going to have to wait for some time to get those results from pennsylvania because they are taking some days to count mail mail and ballots in the meantime though i do want to ask you bell about the senate do you see democrats potentially taking control of the senate i know that they were they were optimistic about that and that's looking increasingly unlikely. it does look unlikely though it's not so was it looks like the democrats picked up 2 seats in the republicans
4:26 pm
picked up seats i haven't looked in the last couple of hours but that would be a big disappointment for the democrats because they were pretty certain that they have a good very good chance almost certain to take over the senate and it looks like they might have just missed that. the side of a public policy professor at george mason university always great to get your insights here on out of there bill thanks for being with us well there are yet no final results from wisconsin very close race there as well absentee ballots are expected to be counted by wednesday morning and there is a deadline a little bit later on today we will be bringing you all of that right here on al-jazeera. well the media and a social media have the sec to become was urns during donald trump's presidency he's effectively weaponized the term fake news and he's been attacking outlets that he perceives as enemies well let's now hear from richard gere's but he is the host
4:27 pm
of our show the listening post. donald trump's inauguration set the tone from that day when he flat out lied about the size of the crowd it was clear that the u.s. news media did not know what to make of the president's on again off again relationship with the truth series of well we have to label it untruths we now have a case where he's made another charge and he has not got evidence why are we surprised that such a racist there's until donald trump came along the white house press corps had been reluctant to accuse any american president of lying that is no longer the case the washington post has counted how many times trump has lied or misled americans the number is more than 22000 forcing journalists to call it what it is this president is a serial liar and he seriously lie tonight how do you defend 22000 false wits by attacking and calling the media outlets reporting on them fake news the dishonest media nobody has any idea how corrupt the media is just like it's
4:28 pm
a mystery who issued one false story after another you are the enemy of the people are you know why it's quiet among with this administration constantly misleading citizens journalists have grown ever more reliant on leaks from disgruntled white house insiders ex insiders turned pundits or ex cabinet officials turned authors some of those leaks have proven to be misleading and have come back to bite the news outlets that bought into them remember russia gate the allegations that russia might have been gathering material video of mr trump it could be used to blackmail him stories of russian meddling in the 2016 election and allegations the truck campaign and the kremlin had worked together complete with that sexy cold war angle with too much for news channels not named fox to resist the eventual retractions were damaging since they lent the president's fake news narrative some credibility we actually correcting a story that we have been reporting throughout the day today the us media landscape divided before donald trump was elected has since grown far more polarized in one
4:29 pm
corner the. liberal side including outlets like c.n.n. m s n b c and the new york times in the other fox news broadcast upstarts like one american news and conservative platform such as the christian broadcasting network and the washington times which oh they're resurgent audiences to the president time and again americans have seen those rival journalistic camps take the same new story and spin it in entirely different directions the covert 1000 story has proven to be much harder for fox and its ilk to manipulate since there is no way to spin infection rates and mortality figures if donald trump loses this election prepare to see some journalists claiming at least some of the credit calling it a victory for the 4th estate some of them will be justified to a certain extent there are news outlets that have been locking horns with the president for years producing some adversarial quality 'd journalism along the way but until 2020 they failed to really move the needle in fact fewer americans trust
4:30 pm
their news media today than in 2016 what it took to sink donald trump in the polls was covert 19 and the science hard data it doesn't lie and try as he might the president has no answer for that it is now time to take a look at the weather. hurrican eater as you know has made landfall as a category 4 hurricane has been rolling around in nicaragua for a few hours is drifting towards honduras has already caused flooding these winds still call it a hurricane but it's rapidly losing strength still getting some feet of water energy but over land these things always lose their strength this is it coming in to the coast of nicaragua is just north of where the center was there was some damage but quite possibly the next few days as the wind drops and this is it moving now this orange represents the amount of rain that's like for most of the honda europe's then it moves a bit further west into bottom dollar it believes as well so the likelihood is
4:31 pm
we'll have a lot of problems from the amount of rain landslides and what have you that of course still to be seen the capital of honduras is about to get tropical strength winds pretty much immediately so the next few hours and then gusty winds from chad changing direction which hints the storm changing its direction and it will is probably the tropical depression during most a thursday drifting around still getting some feed of energy from the warm waters and beyond that well this is where we think it's going to go it will take a week to get from where it started to where it's going which is probably somewhere the cuba or even southern florida. well still ahead on al-jazeera and some other news a state of emergency is declared in the north of ethiopia amid an escalation and tension. and gun prepares to go back into a coronavirus lockdown as more testing is promised and rail madrid pull off a much needed when in the champions league joe will have all those details for you coming and so for.

4:33 pm
the. hello again. let's remind you of our top stories here this hour the race to the white house is a very tight one so far there's no clear victor but u.s. president donald trump has declared himself the winner despite votes still being counted. his rival joe biden says when all the votes are finally counted he expects to come out on top is counting leading in the electoral college count. biden's biggest victory so far has been arizona it's the only state to flip after trump won it back and 2016 millions of ballots still need to be counted with the results
4:34 pm
unclear in the key battleground states of michigan and pennsylvania. donald trump and joe biden are the 2 oldest presidential nominees in american history and that means their running mates have become more important than ever mike pence and comma harris couldn't be more different from their politics to their personalities. hazell senator harrison vice president pence thank you for being here when vice president mike pence and sen kamel harris took to the debate stage in october viewers around the world witnessed a study in contrasts but when you see what the american people have done over these last 8 months hasn't worked it's a great disservice to the shirker forces the american people so let's talk about caring about the american people the american people have to sacrifice far too much because of the incompetence of this administration on the republican side 61 year old vice president mike pence who over the past 4 years has proven himself

a significant part of the military that seems to be. on the that's a grain control though it's worth also bearing in mind the history here the reason that a large part of the military is integrated is because decades of conflict with neighboring eritrea 1st an independent war then a border war but that was finally resolved to years ago following president coming to power not resolving that conflict with neighboring eritrea he was credited with and that's the key reason why he was awarded the nobel peace prize but now with these escalating tensions between the central federal government and the grey there's also a threat of tensions between eritrea integrate as well that could add a further complicating dimension to this conflict this is all happening at the same time as a number of brewing conflicts and growing tensions between ethiopia central government and other regions in ethiopia where ethnically aligned regional parties and powers

a growing increasingly growing dissatisfaction with the central government just a few days ago in the or amir region to the south rights group supported that more than 60 civilians were killed there by an armed group. so let's dig into this a little more with william davison he is the senior ethiopian analyst at international crisis group and he joins us now from the ethiopian capital addis ababa well thanks for being with us this military offensive that we're seeing now is a huge escalation why do you think we're seeing this now. well this is the culmination of the political disputes that emanated from the prime minister coming to power in 2018 the anti-government protests before that and then the t.p.a. left a great ruling party the loss of power during the transition and that resulted in yes very toxic politics different accusations big throat about for example your regions that they were unjustly their officials were unjustly accused of various

crimes that there was the creation of a national party and that put gray out of power at the federal level and left them just in power the regional level then when we had the election delayed this year due to top it 19 the t.l.'s obviously opposed that they went ahead and run their own regional election and that meant we have this very stark constitutional dispute with the federal government and the tiebreak government accusing each other at being unconstitutional oh well i think that this latest development is so concerning that even in the middle of all of its own election drama the united states has already issued a call for deescalation do you think that we could be looking at the beginning of a civil war could this potentially. unfortunately it does have that potential and we are in the very early days here there has been a communications blackout across to great we do not know what conditions are in sight that region but as has been pointed out there is a threat to
4:42 pm
a key he's an of the ethiopian military here because of the loyalty the potential loyalty particularly of the grain opposite has to take great there is also the fact that the great has a relatively strong security apparatuses therefore it is not clear that the federal government effort to remove its e.p.l. at leadership is going to be quick and easy and there is also a reasonable amount of support from the 6000000 roughly people integrate for the regional governments positions and it could be a protracted crisis in say great it could bring in eritrea and it could spread to other parts of the ethiopia and the broader all of africa region as well let me ask you that know how well resorts to regional forces and you say it could become a protected conflict did they have the resources for that to be the case we don't know exactly the capability of the great security forces are to see these things held quite tightly what we do know is that there is a large and fairly well organized militia they have been building up a sort of paramilitary style regional security force and then there is the
4:43 pm
potential loyalty or disloyalty of elements of the federal military of course the federal government holds considerable leaders of power here they could also apply economic pressure as they were threatening to do that seems to be one of the things that have led to this crisis so of course there is a lot of pressure of the great but ultimately it does seem that they may have quite capable resources to defend themselves and possibly to project their power as well as well then let me ask you finally do you think dialogue is off the table or could the relationship between abby and the t.p. left potentially improve. the problem that we have now is that the parties have not been talking for months instead we've had a deteriorating political situation that is now is going to end the conflict so it is wrong to say that talks are by any means on the table but it is absolutely right to say that talks any form of talks is absolutely imperative all its european act
4:44 pm
is must embrace dialogue they must draw back from this conflict which threatens to be devastating and all of the g.o.p.'s international african partners and deal must put pressure on all ethiopian political parties to step away from conflict and to address all of the fundamental fundamental political challenges that starting with this escalating crisis in tikrit when ian davis and there from international crisis group thanks so much for giving us your insights here on out there well thanks for being with us thank you now the houses of several ivory coast opposition leaders have been surrounded by police and that's as more protests are expected following president al assad ouattara as reelection the opposition have rejected the electoral commission as decision and vowed to set up their own transitional government now more than 3000 people have already fled from neighboring countries since what tower one a controversial that 10 if they fear escalating violence that there is a point just google is here on behalf of the opposition platform that is dismissing

a dozen of those are in the later stages of development but there is one to support growing around the oxford university astra zeneca vaccine official name a's ed d. one triple 2 according to the head of research the vaccine is showing some positive early results namely a robust immune response in all age groups including elderly people and as you know you're more likely to suffer serious complications possibly death as a result of getting coronavirus in your later years and also the vaccine is showing few side effects amongst elderly people that the vaccine has been tested upon as well the hope is that within a matter of weeks we'll have a full understanding of the efficacy of that vaccine it needs to be peer reviewed say the the researchers involved in the trial at the moment before they release
4:47 pm
that information but yes positive step forward it is the british government's understanding that in the 1st quarter of 2021 they may if there is positive news be able to roll out this vaccine or mass to the general population one carry out though is that according to research by imperial college london people who naturally develop immunity to the virus after getting it to see that immunity that antibody levels drop quite significantly quite quickly the suggestion being that if this vaccine is available you may need to have regular boosters to develop any kind of solid immunity to help people in the long run right or need to say in the meantime there and now the lockdown talk us through what this is all going to look like. you know this is a major u.-turn for the british government to up until this point have been chappie of championing its more localized approach to dealing with the coronavirus a tear approach to a different part of the country were ranked in terms of severity but given the
