america has been a force for good. from the american people get inspiration from him and the other half cringe. that's the bottom of. al-jazeera. hello i'm rob matheson this is the news our live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes here to report the count is finished we believe. 2 days after the u.s. presidential election there is still no winner but democrat nominee joe biden says he's very close to victory as donald trump launches legal challenges. and it could all come down to these 2 races vote counting is still underway in georgia and
9:01 pm
pennsylvania. kosovo's president steps down to face a war crimes trial at the hague for his alleged role during the $199899.00 kosovo conflict. the u.k. gets a new multibillion dollar rescue package to boost its economy as a wind enters another pandemic lock down. and the pressure mounts on. his side have suffered another defeat at this time in the. uncertainty remains 2 days after americans went to the polls to choose the next president only a handful of states remain unclear but they hold the key to the white house for either joe biden or president donald trump the focus has shifted to the state of georgia where a vote counting has been going through the night it's an extremely close race in
9:02 pm
the traditionally republican state and donald trump's initial lead has been steadily falling georgia is one of several states where republicans are filing legal challenges over the election. let me give you a look at the state of play so far joe biden has already flipped michigan and wisconsin donald trump now only one those 4 years ago the democratic candidates now has a projected total of 264 electoral college votes trump is projected to win 214 now remember a candidate needs 270 to win here in yellow you can see the states still being decided now in the west georgia down towards the north carolina in the middle of course pennsylvania up in the north well as i mentioned vote counting is still going on in georgia leaves there by about $800000.00 votes at least that was the situation about an hour ago but what might help joe biden is that most of the remaining votes are from atlanta and its suburbs which lean democratic we're
9:03 pm
expecting more data in the coming hours we're also still waiting on pennsylvania of the state where joe biden was born trunks lead here is again shrinking the remaining mail ballots are mostly from the democratic leaning cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh that's giving biden a chance to catch up and civilians in other states where trump's filed a lawsuit here is nevada that's where biden is now really in the lead the western state has 6 electoral votes that will be enough to get joe biden to the key number of $270.00 now it's one of the states where trump is suing claiming voter fraud and that we have a team of correspondents in place across the u.s. . as in joe biden's home state of delaware christine salumi is outside the pennsylvania convention center and he gallacher is in florida 1st let's check in with alan fischer standing by for us live in washington d.c. allan just bring us up to date with what has been coming out of the trump campaign
9:04 pm
in the last few hours because they were fairly quiet but now things have got fairly intense. indeed and pretty acrimonious as well we've heard from the trunk campaign in the last couple of hours they say that they're confident the way the results are going they believe that when all the results of the clear than the expect that to be later on friday that donald trump and mike pence will be heading back to the white house for 4 more years they've been very critical of the war of the democrats they said that the democrats are lying cheating and stealing running rampant across the country according to bill stepien who is donald trump's campaign manager the biden campaign has responded to that by describing what was said as silliness the says this is the this information message that is feeding in to what is happening so that they can have this narrative that the election is somehow being stolen from them it's important to point out the donald trump has of course for weeks been
9:05 pm
talking about how the election might be stolen they feel lost it would be because of fraud not because of his failings as a candidate because fewer people were 14 for him in those key states and of course over the last couple of days we've heard from the campaign saying that there have been numerous examples of fraudulent voting but never at any point have they produced any evidence even when they've been asked to do so the currently involved in the number of legal actions across the country this is apparently a strategy that has been endorsed by donald trump who is spending his time in the white house talking to allies closely following all the results and of course in the last couple of hours we've heard from his team in last vegas and nevada and they again with evidence we've got allegations that there was fraudulent voting going on there. we firmly believe that there are many voters in this group of mail and people that are not proper voters and the last many
9:06 pm
days we have received reports of many irregularities across the valley weaver we believe that there are dead voters that have been counted we are also confident that there are thousands of people whose votes have been counted they have moved out of clark county. in the during the pandemic. although of course is a lot of speculation about what donald trump is likely to do in the event that joe biden does make it to the white house. of course we've heard from bill stepien who is his campaign manager who said in the last couple of hours the donald trump is alive and well we haven't seen him for a couple of days but he has been tweeting as we know including a tweet that said stop the vote which is a bit odd stop counting the vote it's weird that he's saying that because of course he wants them to stop counting in pennsylvania but continue counting in arizona
9:07 pm
where he's behind joe biden it's a very odd message the question is what will he do if he loses will there be a smooth transition of power well there's actually a law in place that says his administration has got to work with the incoming administration to make sure that that's exactly what happens how will he respond well you will look at the way he's been over the last 4 years people for example said that when he went to the white house he would become much more presidential not the sort of thing that he actually did he said that he would stop tweeting when he realized it was causing a few problems because then he wanted to appeal to more members of the american public that didn't happen he said in a couple of speeches that he would govern for all the americans but then of course he's talked about red states and blue states and how blue states democratic states need to fend for themselves i've been speaking to people in the trump or but one suggestion that they have made to me of course is that donald trump might well just leave office with a bit of dignity and a bit of class because he doesn't want to make things difficult his intention is
9:08 pm
that in 4 years time he might well run again he'd be 78 there's nothing under the u.s. constitution that says he could run for another 4 year chair and that is something that is being investigated by the with the donald trump something that has been suggested they think he'd be able to do that and see what i did in the 4 years the 1st time around and i can do a better job this time around and we don't have corporate to worry about it's just an idea no one suggesting it's happening is a long way down the road and that's something to keep you warm tonight as you're watching the recounts and the legal action. in various states across the country thanks very much indeed alan fischer talking to us from washington d.c. well georgia has become the unexpected tossup for donald trump with joe biden closing in on his lead for more on that we're going to speak to andy gallagher he's joining us live from miami where he's monitoring things in georgia and he just bring us up to date with what we know about what's happening in georgia at the moment. a look at the end of election night on tuesday which feels like
9:09 pm
a very long time ago donald trump had a 370000 vote lead over his rival joe biden that's now been eaten down to just over 13000 with about 50000 votes left to count now why is that significant because the votes that are still not being tabulated are coming from democratic majority areas and if you look at the neighboring counties that have already been counted that have a similar demographic in some cases biden's getting 80 percent of that vote so poll workers in the state working all through the night really trying to get these results say more about 96 percent of all votes counted in some state officials and saying look this could be a case where there's a 1000 votes between biden and trump i mean when you think about that it's actually quite mind blowing because this state hasn't been taken by democratic presidential
9:10 pm
nominee she's $992.00 that was bill clinton but the rules in georgia say that if the results are within half a percent of each other the candidate can call for a recount so that may happen we just don't know yet but remember georgia has 16 electoral college votes it's been a red state for decades and people are watching as these results slowly drip in but as they do it seems that trumps. being lead is now being steadily eaten away and we're hoping we get the final results the 100 percent count in the next few hours and in this reading on. on the the wires here in fulton county in georgia there's an election official who's saying that he expects to complete counting of absentee ballots later on thursday but they're also saying they can still receive military and overseas ballots by 5 pm eastern time that's 2200 g.m.t. on friday so it may well be that the count where we were hoping to get maybe in the next few hours might be extended as those military ballots still have to come in.
9:11 pm
yeah i mean there's every chance of that because remember trump's lawyers are already suing in georgia saying that one of the poll watchers saw 53 mail in ballots handed in after the 7 pm deadline 53 that just shows you how tight it is in this state and i think the trump campaign would probably imagine that those military votes would go for the president there are lots of bases in georgia around the atlanta area many of those people serving overseas mailing those things in so this is an extremely complex situation at the moment just because it's so razor thin margins here are absolutely unthinkable a few years ago because this state has been so solidly republican so it's just a case of wait and see these poll workers state officials are working around the clock they know the world is watching them and they're trying to get those results to us as quickly as humanly possible to gallagher bring us up to date with what's
9:12 pm
happening in georgia he's monitoring that from miami and we thank you very much indeed. well let's speak now to kristen salumi she's outside the philadelphia convention center where there were both pro biden and pro trump demonstrations chris and tell us about the latest on the count 1st of all. yes well the count continues and the race gets closer and closer here in pennsylvania donald trump's lead is now less than 2 percent compared to about 6 percent when we went to bed last night that's 122000 votes ahead for donald trump and to put it in perspective there are about that many votes left to be counted here in philadelphia a very democratic leaning city and of course in addition to that votes elsewhere around the state are also still being counted there has been a court decision today in favor of the campaign allowing them to have monitors
9:13 pm
witnessing the vote count within 6 feet of the count to be able to observe exactly what is going on just a short time ago representatives of the trump campaign held a press conference and said that they are not getting access here's what corey lewandowsky had to say. they have 8 attorneys fighting as was inside the court orders but they will not. only show would have to decide not to come down it's legal it's a court order to show what you know tony will not come down and of course it could order what is going on in the city what do you want to open up the noise level and let us fix for the way so that we can have a free and fair election where you could put donald trump 2 for the patrol card everybody has a right to win with conspiring with this makes you look like a kangaroo court we deserve better and we're not leaving until we witness every
9:14 pm
single vote that transpired in. the city of philadelphia. is appealing that decision to let the monitors in and in the meantime the vote count is continuing we were expecting to hear from governor tom wolfe a short time ago that press conference seems to be delayed but he did say earlier in the day that these are partisan attacks and election officials should be allowed to do their job free of intimidation and free of interference and attack you mentioned those demonstrations we did see that not too far from here a short time ago representing both sides in this election biden and. we heard from protestors on the trump side saying voting closed on november 3rd well technically yes it did but the votes that are being counted were cast by november 3rd even votes that are still being counted even the mail in ballots had to be received or postmarked by november 3rd so that's
9:15 pm
a bit misleading on the other side we saw biden supporters as well out chanting count every vote so the tension is ratcheting up here in philadelphia and across the state but the counting is continuing chris and thanks very much that's kristen salumi talking to us from the philadelphia convention center. ok let's cross over to jamal shiloh he's live for us in wilmington delaware of course that's joe biden's home state and we're hearing from officials in washington about what the position was with the trump campaign at the moment what has been the reaction from the democrats to accusations of voting irregularities. well let's start by reading out a tweet by joe biden he is not only trump has been taken through twitter biden treated roughly 30 minutes ago be patient folks votes being counted and we feel good about where we are so nothing new there are just
9:16 pm
a reiteration of the confidence that's been expressed by the democratic candidate for the presidency who has essentially broken. records in the united states by receiving the most number of votes or any presidential candidates has received behind me is this stage that they set up. just outside the convention center here the chase convention center where the headquarters of the campaign are still they are they are expecting at some point to you is it true that the federal aviation administration or authority they actually issued a no fly zone over biden's home just a couple of miles away from where we are here that something usually only done when somebody is considered to be the president elect it doesn't mean that they're announcing gets all of the officials have said it but it is just a fact that they have issued that no fly zone it could be just because of security concerns obviously with what we've been seeing across the country the narrative
9:17 pm
that has been coming out aside from the call for calm that were expressed in biden streets has also been one for respect for the electoral process run its course has been one of the importance of protecting american democracy in people's business a patient something which is. very much juxtaposed to what we have heard from president trump and his camp there hasn't been any call for any votes to be stopped obviously behind the scenes. even the fact that they think it's just enough to come out with these statements they are mobilizing their own lawyers for litigation for legal action to be taken but they are very confident that very soon he will be announced as the next president of the united states of america in the run up to the elections of all the democrats who are really expecting a big repudiation of donald trump by republicans and yet that hasn't really happened has it. it has and in fact trump actually
9:18 pm
got about even maybe more votes this time around than he did in 2016 what's been difference this time is that the democrats have managed to bring out more people onto the streets in their favor they haven't really swung republicans are away from donald trump and that's translated also in the because remember it's not just presidential elections that are taking place there were some votes that were taken place for some kind of in some no house as well as the senate as well in the senate the democrats were expecting to see and i remember listening to nancy pelosi just a couple of days or maybe the night before the eve of the elections where they expected to get at least 4 or 5 new senators in on their side and to the majority in their favor that's hasn't happened what has happened is essentially a realisation that there are 2 americas as many analysts have been describing it that he's there is a very clear camps you have one that is very much in favor of the policy politics
9:19 pm
and policies of trump of his rhetoric of the kind of. agenda that he has been following and another that sees this as extremely dangerous and is very much in favor of what's biden has been putting forward and this has been a somewhat by biden over the past 24 hours where he accepts that there is a fracture in this country there is huge division he put it as a result of this elections but the reality is there are a lot more deeper underlying issues in terms of race relations and the inherent racism that exists in many sections of society in the social economic inequality that is spread across the country across other policy issues not least for example the corner virus you've had more than 800000 cases registered in the united states in the past 24 hours and there is a huge divide amongst the people as to what is the best way to deal with that so there hasn't been a reproduction of trump ism that ideology or that. idea still very much exists but
9:20 pm
there has been let's say more mobilization for those on the other side of that debate jamal thanks very much indeed does talking to us from wilmington delaware that's the home state of joe biden i want to bring in claude plaxico he's a former north carolina democratic senator who's joining us live by skype it's good to have you on the program so thanks very much indeed for joining us we heard from jamal there dancing is that essentially america as some analysts are calling it is has been split into 2 that there is a fracture in the country what is the best way for joe biden administration should that come to pass to try to glue those 2 sides together. when they 1st of all want to clarify and a little bit more from my perspective and that is joe biden. won over the independents so yes there's division in this country we're not be any different
9:21 pm
from any other country that that has that what has differentiated us is our acceptance of our democratic system almost side that's being challenge right now but more challenge by one side but in the selection joe biden was successful in winning over anough independents so why he didn't not bring in very many republicans don't trump did not bring in many many democrats. they battle was between those independents who don't who are not partisan and there are a lot of those folks. and they chose they could have chosen one of the continuing chaos of donald trump but they chose the calmness of joe biden and i think that speaks well for where we can go as a country i don't think that joe biden would have breached that blue wall or regain that blue wall back at west consonant and michigan and very possibly looks likely
9:22 pm
now and so then you and possibly win a southern state georgia that has acknowledged for a democrat since i southerner ran in 1992 and they're possibly may win arizona which is almost unheard of in recent times for a democrat to win and so obviously there are people who've made that decision and though they may have chosen republican senators they may have chosen some republican house members when it came to choosing a president they chose joe biden we need to keep in mind that joe biden is 3 and a half almost 4000000 votes ahead nationally he's got 50 percent of the popular vote. but i think that what people are expecting and hoping that joe biden would do will put that into practice as president should he be. elected and i think that's what he would do i think some of the 1st things he would do would probably be to reach out to people like lindsey graham and mitch mcconnell and others the
9:23 pm
challenge that they will have is whether or not they will step up and be leaders in the political arena or just partisans how can i have an angle be yet to be seen how concerned are you that given the fact we may have a senate which is pretty evenly divided possibly with the emphasis on the republicans that a biden administration is essentially going to be fraught hold for want of a better phrase when it comes to bringing in legislation that it is going to be faced with a senate that is simply not going to allow the majority of their decisions to go through which should be a huge challenge but that is part of the american system that's why you have the separation of powers you have the house and senate it was all created in a way that the in reality was to keep things from moving too quickly. my own personal opinion is that there are some things that we need to move quickly on in
9:24 pm
the coming in the coming years but that's the challenge i think that if we can put our partisanship behind it just think in terms of what's good not for the democrats not what's good for republicans what is good for america that i think we will make progress and i'm hopeful that it will do that i think joe joe biden is the person who can take that leadership or o. clock plaxico is a former north carolina democratic senator who's been joining us in all desire and we appreciate it thank you very much indeed said thank you. talk to more ahead on the news hour including the u.n. calls for an immediate and deescalation intentions as ethiopia's prime minister sends troops into the region and in sports adult to say argentinian football legend diego maradona is recovering well after brain surgery son is going to be hit with that story.
9:25 pm
well as a result in the balance there's been protests in cities across the country in arizona trump supporters gathered outside a vote counting center please block the entrance to the building observers from both parties were inside as the votes were being counted there were also demonstrations in las vegas vote counting still underway in the vote over joe biden has a very narrow lead over donald trump and protests were held in washington d.c. near the white house when demonstrators marched demanding that every vote is counted some activists carried signs reading the world is watching. and hundreds marched through central chicago again calling for all votes to be included they also highlighted issues that have flared up during trump's presidency including police brutality racism and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic those issues were also highlighted at protests in new york it was there. protests on the streets of new york city here in the heart of times square these people are
9:26 pm
protesting what they say is voter suppression in america against black people this is just one of multiple protests there were in new york city earlier in the evening thousands of people took to the streets in midtown they walk more than 30 blocks and they were chanting count every ballot every vote counts they were people who really showed some anger. election was even being called in to quit. by the president and they said that they had to get out to the streets because they felt it was their civic duty to make their voices heard that the all the votes of everybody are counted people into the streets call strikes call actually shut this place down i'm here because i want to join my voice to the thousands of the mandating that every vote be counted by luck it's
9:27 pm
a democracy and everybody should happen more ice. melt in their ballots and are wondering whether they're going to be counted we know new york is going to. stay it's. the only way to stop an attempt like the one. thing you would like to. make lots of people out in the streets peacefully demanding our rights protesters here say they're prepared to come back out to the streets in the coming days if every vote is not counted. so i had it all just images of possible war crimes emerge as the battle over the disputed territory and. continues. in sports the last minute goal that brought on the. high profile major league.
9:28 pm
hello there are other vicious thunderstorms over level and generally speaking in this part of the event for the last 24 hours have gone away now you see the worst of the weather go up into turkey and the coaxes was following shahrazad misty's attempts have dropped and you will get sunshine and more showers as rain on its way into oman as well which just shows a bit of instability in the atmosphere my t.v. and use a shower too as funnels as die hard but generally speaking it's still a pretty dry picture or put it in the forecast all the same and the way we're looking at to typical of this time of the year low humidity temperature at about 30 mark right in proper is showing itself even more so in somalia some parts of ethiopia and just touching south sudan but the concentration is for the south and as you know is in places like rwanda or burundi they've been rain to the south of
9:29 pm
that as well where it's been very warm in south africa that turned into showers they're on their way out so in facts temperature in johannesburg it's way up to meet the sudden botswana above normal well into the thirty's not true of cape town in cape town you got active weather on its way in temperatures dropping the winds are strong in this at least 3 days are the rain or sherry rain. my name is not you castle i grew up jewish in america and i support the palestinian struggle against occupation when politics came past my mom saw me at a protest in chicago carrying a palestinian flag she told me i was no longer her son is it possible to be jewish and critical of zionism. i do palestinians over there to work i think it's the most jewish thing i can do what about the treatment towards the palestinians and the
9:30 pm
occupation about it on al-jazeera correspondent. there's a wave of sentiment around the world people actually want accountability from the people who are running their countries and i think often people's voices are not heard because they're just not part of the mainstream news narrative. obviously we cover big stories and we report on the big events are going on but we also tell the stories of people who generally don't have a voice i mean when i was a child my that's never be afraid to put your hand up not a question and i think that's what our syria really does the os the questions to people who should be accountable and also to get people to give their view of what's going on. your child is either
9:31 pm
a reminder of our top stories at this hour the race for the white house is going down to the wire after flipping michigan and wisconsin joe biden has a projected total of 264 electoral college votes according to the associated press while chunk as 214 it takes 270 to win the election. the u.s. president has repeated unsubstantiated claims that there were major problems with voting and ballots counting georgia nevada and pennsylvania just some of the states where votes are still being counted republicans are finding legal challenges over the election. joe biden's urging his supporters to be patient insisting he's on track for victory logical hane wraps up the developments so far former vice president joe biden projecting confidence he will be the next president and he may have taken a step closer he sociate a press declaring he's won the state of wisconsin and michigan giving him more electoral college votes and an easier path to that you 70 that will get him to the
9:32 pm
white house and now after a long night of county it's clear that we're one new enough states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency i'm not here to clear that we've won but i am here to report where the count is finished we believe we will be the winners but u.s. president donald trump is demanding a recount in wisconsin after falling short by around $20000.00 votes even his most ardent supporters doubt that will change anything former wisconsin governor scott walker tweeting out a recount in 2016 trump's numbers went up by 131 and the counting continues in the states that will decide the election with state officials asking for patience give the public servants the opportunity to do their job and what i will tell you is that karen pennsylvania we're going to follow the law and we will respect the will of the people and the crop her victory will be certified based on who got more
9:33 pm
votes the president is suing to stop the counting in some states his surrogates saying falsely that the election is being stolen to win for a republican to win here how many votes do we have to be at $400000.00 is not enough. with 80 plus percent counted i think there's only 14 percent of the vote to go. if you think we're stupid you think we're false the president is complaining on twitter they're finding biden votes all over the place in pennsylvania wisconsin and michigan so bad for country to be clear they're not finding ballots but counting ones that come in on time according to state laws and there is a question about whether the postal service run by a trump loyalist interfered in getting ballots delivered on time define a federal judge's order tuesday to do a sweep for ballots they refused potentially leaving hundreds of thousands not
9:34 pm
counted the one thing this election has clearly shown america is a nation divided it really does seem like people live in 2 different realities given like the news they consume and with a surround themselves with so i am not that surprised that a lot of people decided to vote again for a president whose proudest so where we are with several cases winding their way through the courts as the votes are counted and america and the world waits to see who eked out a win in this fractured country patty calling out to 0 i don't calls a political commentator he's also director of debate university of michigan is joining us live from northern michigan by skype good to have you on the program if donald trump does get back into the white house what do you think that presidents and it's going to look like. yes i think it'd be more tamal to us than the 1st term given. you know the unprecedented.
9:35 pm
return that that would be i think most people now believe when the remainder of the votes are counted in the outstanding states as possibly as early as today or tomorrow that joe biden's likely to prevail but somehow if the president trump were to have you know a comeback of an unprecedented proportion then i think you would see more of the same from the 1st term because obviously that election victory as dramatic as it was would validate everything he did in the 1st term i think that some of the advisers that kind of you know kept in a little more grounded place by people more to the ideological liking of the president and so be something similar to the 1st term but yet even a little bit more bold given that he'd be so. encouraged by what happened in the dramatic turn of events that led him to an unlikely reelection in the event that we do get a job biden presidency one of the biggest totals he's going to face is the fact
9:36 pm
that as many of our commentators have been talking about there is an enormous fracture enormous divisions in the united states how does a biden presidency presidents and try to heal those cracks and who does he go for fuss does he go for trump supporters does he go for republicans does he go for people that he knows he can turn he's already one of i guess somebody said that he's already managed to turn a lot of independents to his side. yeah i think that be the most likely have an interest looking at the results of the election it seems like he was able to blunt the margins a large margins in rural places trump did so well in 2016 and was able to win over some republicans in suburban districts and so he definitely did a good job of reaching out to more moderate republicans they weren't happy with the trump presidency and so that certainly be the 1st step for those it like to get over to side but also gives people the left of the democratic party those who are
9:37 pm
for sanders or elizabeth warren if you need to get them in your your column as well because the special young voters and that their enthusiasm and turnout is very important so 'd it's certainly a very tough task of people from both sides but as a senator and vice president he was considered pretty moderate he's mentioned that he kind of wants to be a caretaker bridge in the united states hasn't even guaranteed that he would run for a 2nd term and so the 1st think you do is you know try to appoint some moderate to republicans and in his cabinet be more likely anyway to get senate confirmation and so reaching out extended an olive branch to those former republican as those that maybe were disaffected by trump it certainly be a good start to be a tight will because the the thing is that he's going to have to try to appease those who opposed opposed him particularly the trump supporters but at the same time of course he does not want to be seen by democrats to be handing over too much
9:38 pm
to be completing if you like too much it's going to be a very difficult tightrope walk is what i was trying to say only our own form. definitely definitely mean you view when you're happy to hear the president she reached this lifelong goal but then the work that is required is tremendous and they'll be another you know senate and house elections in 2 years and so it is so she herself for that is important but he's got experience of the vice president of actually the democrats lost control of the house and senate he had to work with republicans like mitch mcconnell to get budgets passed and you know he crease taxes in exchange for more spending and things like that he's originally from pennsylvania he was pretty moderate when he led the senate foreign relations committee and so it's actually a tough task but it's got a very experienced people around it that have been around washington for a long time and certainly him he's out of public service for 47 years so it's a tough job but if anyone has the experience to do it certainly he does good to talk to them and we appreciate it thanks very much indeed for being with us on
