the site that's the bottom of. the stand the differences and similarities of cultures across the world so much i have to take it will bring you the news and current affairs that matter to you. the race for the white house narrows with joe biden urging everyone to stay calm as he continues to eat into donald trump's lead in crucial states. this after trump supporters and opponents confront each other and make lousy tension over the election. eleanore entirely this is our jazeera live from london also coming up. she resigns as kosovo's president and is transferred to detention in the hague where he's been
1:01 am
charged with war crimes. begin in the united states where it's another day of uncertainty for americans over who be the next president counting continues in just a handful of states which hold the key to the white house for either joe biden or donald trump biden appears to have won the popular vote but it's all down to the electoral college a state by state voting system that determines who will be president and democratic candidate joe biden has flipped michigan and wisconsin states donald trump narey 14 years ago and based on associated press projected results arden carney has 264 electoral college votes is sitting on 214. a candidate needs 270 to secure the white house the states in yellow oss till too close to call will include nevada
1:02 am
where joe biden has a slender lead the window the state will secure 6 electoral votes in 2016 trant lost nevada by more than 2 percent in georgia it's also extremely close donald trump's initial lead has been steadily falling thousands of absentee ballots and yet to be counted most of the remaining votes are from atlanta and its suburbs which usually lean to the democrats and one of the most contentious states is pennsylvania trump has what seems a significant lead they're not counting mail in ballots which is weighing heavily towards democrats so biden could still win the state's 20 electoral votes we have correspondents monitoring events around the u.s. the moment we'll hear from alan fischer in washington d.c. and mike hanna in wilmington delaware where the democratic contender joe biden spoken in the last hour in america voted sacred. it's how
1:03 am
people of this nation expressed their will. and it is the will of the voters no one not anything else that chooses the president of united states of america so each ballot must be counted and that's what we're going to see going through now and that's how it should be democracy sometimes messy it sometimes requires a little patience as well but that patience has been rewarded now for more than 240 years the system of government governance that's been the envy of the world. and we continue to feel sad and i will continue to feel very good about where things stand we have no doubt that when the count is truly senator harrison i will be declared the winners so i ask everyone to stay calm all the people to stay calm the process is working. the count is being completed and we'll know very soon so
1:04 am
thank you all for your patience but you have to count the votes god bless you all and may god protect our troops thank you so much. let's go to mike hanna who's in wilmington so continuing that message really of calm and and the necessity of all counts to be voted from joe biden. very much so interesting though that joe biden was speaking there after a strategy sent session and downtown washington not at the campaign headquarters behind me here but that tone is quite correct it is a measured tone it is a tone calling for calm making very clear his campaign's belief that they are going to win this election but refraining from getting ahead of the council this is being biden's tactic in the last 48 hours making very clear that he's not going to be claiming victory he is going to be the polar opposite of the president in terms of his response to this period of insecurity calling for calm once again calling for
1:05 am
patience and stressing that this is a process that exists within a wider context it's not just about the selection it's about every american election it's about the process of democracy itself coming together within a constitution which has been in place for so many centuries so this is classic biden it is a tone of confidence quiet confidence but what is a stab rushing is a polar opposite to the person that he's competing again and what he's also doing is beginning to lay down markers should he win this election to be able to deal with a center for example that in all probability will be republican and with a country that has been so sharply divided throughout the past 4 years in particular he's laying those stepping stones to begin dealing with those particular issues should he be elected president mike hanna thank you very much. let's go live
1:06 am
now to alan fischer who's in washington d.c. meanwhile allen at the trump campaign is continuing to challenge the ongoing council through the course what what are they been saying. well interestingly enough we're getting a suggestion from a couple media owners here in the united states that donald trump himself might speak in the coming hours and that simply because he feels that he's sitting this beast. joe biden who's spoken no twice in the last couple days and of course we haven't heard from donald trump since election night itself when he declared victory some people are suggesting that joe biden has looked more presidential in the last 48 hours than the president has for the campaign that they are saying that the democrats are doing a bad thing simply because they believe that they are to quote the campaign manager they are taking their lying cheating and stealing running running a more across the country that's been backed up by a number of legal actions that they've taken have gone to court in wisconsin of
1:07 am
course they want to see a recount there but they had a legal action in georgia that was thrown out by the judge they also had a legal action in michigan there the judge ruled against them essentially saying that the campaign had brought here see evidence no firm evidence just what people had told them and they needed a great deal more than that but we knew this was going to happen donald trump has been talking for weeks about the possibility of going to the courts to challenge any decision if it meant that he was going to lose the election even taking it as far as the supreme court it has been a common theme from the campaign over the last 2436 hours and we've even heard from his team and las vegas nevada when without any evidence and we've got to point out that these allegations are being made by the trump campaign and they refuse to put up any evidence they keep saying we have had we have seen we have been told and when they came out in nevada last couple of hours they again made these allegations and again without evidence. we firmly believe that there are many
1:08 am
voters in this group of mail and people that are not proper voters and the last many days we have received reports of many irregularities across the valley we've we believe that there are dead voters that have been counted we are also confident that there are thousands of people whose votes have been counted that have moved out of clark county. in the during the pandemic. and meanwhile that and while the counting continues in the states which aside so far been too close to cool can we expect any imminent announcements will results in the next few hours or so. well north carolina has tended to plug up the fact that it could be a number of days before they have a final result in pennsylvania there is one county that isn't counting so that would suggest that that might be at least
1:09 am
a day away although there was some suggestion that we could get results from pennsylvania that gives an indication of where things were going in the next couple of hours interestingly enough donald trump was ahead in pennsylvania by 108000 votes this morning that is no down to 95 so that 100. my math never brilliant 13000 that he's lost just with some of the mill in ports that are being counted over the course of the day as for hours on or again we're expecting something maybe late on friday so there doesn't seem to be anything imminent but the biden campaign will tell you of course that pennsylvania if that is the clear some point in the next couple of hours would be a huge win for his campaign that would in fact take him over $270.00 electoral college votes that would secure the presidency in normal times but we know these are not normal times and that would likely be challenged in the courts almost certainly the high profile very expensive lawyers that both campaigns have put on
1:10 am
the payroll in the last couple of weeks would be called into action so at the moment 2 days after the election we're still in roughly the same sort of position but hopefully things will become a lot clearer in the coming hours alan fischer thank you very much indeed. tensions have been rising in philadelphia where trump and biden supporters are outside the convention center that's where ballots are still being counted chunk supporters are denouncing the election process and edging that fraudulent ballots were counted in favor of democratic presidential nominee joe biden i mean fans dismissed the allegation calling for every vote to be counted. it isn't just the white house up for grabs in this election so a 35 senate seats and control of the upper house of congress still hangs in the balance republicans have defeated democratic challengers in several crucial states but so far they've also failed to lock down the seats needed to retain their small majority. and all of the 43530 seats in the house of representatives were up for
1:11 am
grabs and democrats look like they're maintaining their majority they currently have 208 house seats but republicans have picked up 6 seats bringing their total 219-2188 needed for a definitive majority in the house. still to come this half hour more on a knife edge presidential election last. us sets a new daily coronavirus record of more the 100000 cases as look down measures i reintroduced around here and. our has just been a spate of significant and rather nasty shattering these are new south wales and parts of queens and so sydney was the focus most recently and for another 24 hours

they're going to run to the top stories and al-jazeera the race to the white house is going down to the wire associated press projections show democratic presidential candidate joe biden currently on 264 electoral college votes and president donald trump on 214270 votes and needed to win the election. the u.s. president has repeated unsubstantiated claims that there were major problems with voting and ballot counting nevada and pennsylvania are among those states where votes are still being counted and republicans of filing legal challenges and trump and biden supporters have confronted each other outside the philadelphia convention center still being counted supporters say fraudulent balance being counted in favor of job by. bicycle hayne is live in philadelphia pennsylvania so patty
1:15 am
this is a huge problem for both sides they really they would love to get those 20 electoral college votes from pennsylvania and tell us are we going to hear anything soon. oh god. it's been a long couple of days for everyone we are getting some indications that we could have a final result from pennsylvania tonight because again as you mentioned pennsylvania that's the ballgame if it goes towards joe biden we're waiting to hear from the secretary of state hopefully she'll have an update one of the issues is one of the counties near pittsburgh which is also tends to vote democratic demographic democratic they're not going to count about 35000 votes today but if the count statewide is way further than that it doesn't really matter if they count he's going to set the scene for you here what's happening behind me the votes are being counted in the building over there a couple blocks that way and this protest has been happening pretty much all day it's try. supporters say stop the vote count it's
1:16 am
a lot of people saying every vote needs to count it's a very festive atmosphere not at all the angry yelling that we've seen in a lot of part a lot of states as this election drags on but right now as allen said 90000 votes separates the candidates with donald trump president donald trump in the lead put that in perspective though just to understand why trump supporters are so angry about this on election night it looked like he was going to take the state with about 700000 votes and that was of course because they weren't really counting mallon ballots because the election officials went to the state legislature here controlled by republicans before the election said please let us count mail in ballots or at least get them ready before election day if not there's no way we're going to have vote totals and the republicans said no. ok it's apologize for the curse words if you heard that about the u.s. president of course we did not mean to put that on the air but again they asked if
1:17 am
they could count them alland ballots and the legislature said no so it wasn't until the day of the election that they were able to really open up they were really at able to open up those ballots and it takes a while to count those but again we're waiting to hear from the secretary of state and hopefully we will have a little bit more clarity on exactly what's happening something's happening behind you with the crowd there cheering so let's see what happens and i just just briefly can your mind is what the legal situation is so is because spencer when they what's happened so far and terms of legal procedures and when they might go. now a lot of people are making a big deal about this because a case went to the supreme court but basically what happened and i'll try and keep it out of the weeds is normally in pennsylvania you have to have your ballot in my election day in order for it to count well the supreme court in the state of pennsylvania got involved and said no we're going to give people till friday close of business. and that went to the supreme court the supreme court sided not to
1:18 am
basically weigh in on that but left open the possibility that they could because it was 4 to 4 this is with the new justice not weighing in she would be more likely to go with the conservatives who wanted to say only votes that are brought in on november 3rd can be counted now here's why that's probably not going to matter we're talking about likely a margin of victory in the 10s of thousands if not 100000 which is what most of the analysts are saying it should be and what they're doing with those ballots those 10000 ballots that the expect will have been brought in between election day and friday that's not going to be enough to really push the state total either way so it could that's one avenue for a legal challenge if it's an incredibly close race the supreme court could possibly throw out those ballots but it's our understanding that those $10000.00 or so ballots are even being counted right now so what we hear tonight probably won't have those in the mix but again a very festive atmosphere here you know there has been some talk that
1:19 am
pennsylvania's going to decide if pennsylvania decides if it goes towards joe biden nothing else matters the rest of it is just icing on the cake so of definitely festive atmosphere here for those who support biden those who support trump well they're a little bit more angry about it petticoating thank you very much. that's going to rub reynolds. looking at the counts in the neighboring states of nevada and arizona springing up to speed on nevada fest. well lauren in nevada joe biden's lead over donald trump has increased somewhat to over 10000 votes there was a new. batch of that was released processed made public earlier on thursday. the slowness of the vatican has aroused some pretty human. activity on twitter and other social media lots of pictures of sleeping kittens and slow moving puppies and snails and things like
1:20 am
that probably not that much appreciated by the vote counters and the officials in nevada but at least someone is showing a little bit of levity the nevada secretary of state says there are $190000.00 ballots remaining to be counted the vast majority of those 90 percent of them in fact are from clark county that's the county where las vegas the biggest city in the by far in nevada is located the clark county registrar says that he believes the bulk of the remaining ballots will be counted and released to public consumption on saturday or sunday the trump campaign has filed the suit as it has in other states in the vatican to stop the count alleging without providing much evidence that there are some serious irregularities including ballots that were cast by people who no longer live in nevada or who are no longer living
1:21 am
period the clark county registrar registrar scuse me is name is joe gloria said in a news briefing on thursday that he is not aware of any improper ballots being cast and many legal analysts have opined that the team's lawsuits are largely without merit and that it would be to use a las vegas gambling metaphor a long shot for them to succeed what about arizona have they are they close to finishing counting. same situation in arizona a lot more votes that are still in the hopper and need to be tabulated the vote totals are tightening in trump's favor but biden as of thursday morning is still ahead of trump by about 68000 votes with 88 percent of the precincts reporting the county continues their new totals. about 5
1:22 am
hours ago that came out showing these new figures now the contrast between the trump and the biden campaign and the candidates statements couldn't be more stark with trump tweeting earlier today stop the count and he's of course filed a number of lawsuits in various states and as we mentioned earlier and biden just a few hour or so ago expressing confidence that he and his running mate campbell harris will prevail and are urging the country to remain calm and remain patient the arizona secretary of state katy hobbs said there are somewhere between 40450000 ballots yet to be tabulated most of those are from maricopa county which is phoenix again that's the largest city in the state of arizona and it's suburban and satellite cities she says again the bulk of those

intensive care units across europe have been bracing for a 2nd wave of coronavirus now it's here many are struggling to stay afloat these doctors in barcelona are understaffed and overwhelmed we are tired their number of people is sometimes is not enough and if the number of cases continues to increase to rise we are going to be difficulty to ration of course it's needed to hire more people the problem is that there is not enough people unlike france germany and britain spain have resisted a nationwide lockdown leading to a patchwork of different rules but as cases creep upwards more measures seem inevitable. in the british capital the street talk quieter than usual as england woke to its 2nd lockdown businesses barely back on their feet after the 1st wave now closed for a month of course there have been concerns about the high street deep concerns
