where we have a baseline of inspections that literally is breaking records every day with regards to number of infections number of hospitalizations and numbers of deaths the numbers are really stunning we can do something about it but that's something right now is public health measures well in california hospitals could soon run out of beds in their intensive care units and that's why the governor there has imposed a lockdown in parts of the state but this week may also mark a turning point federal regulators could authorize a vaccine in the next 5 days rob reynolds is in los angeles and says authorities there are lying on people to act more responsibly to curb the surgeon infections. it's a very wide ranging set of. restrictions which has certainly gotten plenty of pushback from business owners even from law enforcement officials and
3:03 am
this is coming on top you know of many many months of restrictions and and warnings from public health officials and politicians and people are very weary there is a pandemic fatigue that is very pronounced in california and across the united states and this of course for those business owners is the time of year when they make their money this is not a kind of situation where police or sheriff's deputies are going to go door to door and check to see if you're having a party or something like that they are relying on people to act responsibly to wear masks to socially isolate wash their hands all of those sorts of things. but law enforcement officials for example the sheriffs of several counties in the state of california said they're not going to enforce the law they call the governor a hypocrite because he dined out without a mask with
3:04 am
a party in november and now he's closing down the restaurants and so on so it's a really excellent question as to how people are going to respond will they obey these rules or will they flout these rules nobody really knows the answer at this point but i got to say that based on past experience specially with these holidays like thanksgiving holiday in november people have not really complied with the rules so there could be really tough times ahead well dr ali finally has a behavioral psychologist and professor of organizational behavior at the hold international business school is joining us by skype from rotterdam in the netherlands it's really good to have you with us thanks very much indeed for giving us your time we heard rob so they're saying that the authorities in california are relying on people to act more responsibly how realistic is that given the fact that this is one of the harshest lockdowns that the u.s. the scene at the moment and it comes on the back of so many others. that's a great question and i think it's well said that this is very hard i mean it's
3:05 am
going to be very hard for a lot of people to continue to follow the measures that are given to them especially now being put into another lockdown what's happening nowadays with a lot of people is their excuse experiencing kind of a behavioral fatigue because we've kind of been in and out of lockdown for about 9 months already and a lot of people are finding it very difficult to maintain themselves or to keep on following the rules that are provided to them to ensure that we you know prevent the spread of the virus another aspect here to take into consideration is of course that we are just entering the winter months the holiday seasons of course people want to be around people and loved ones so that is also another additional aspect that is making it very difficult for people to maintain themselves and to follow the rules as are many a lot of the times when we have conversations like this we're talking about business owners we're talking about adults but of course children seriously impacted by this give us an an indication of the way that children are affected by
3:06 am
this relentless or seemingly relentless situation of lockdown. well you know again this is such as you rightfully mentioned children are heavily impacted by this pandemic but often overlooked as you already mentioned that we often talk about you know parents and business knowledge being affected by it but children are equally or probably even more so affected by this pandemic due to the fact that they're missing out on social time being at school of course they have to be with their parents as well the whole time so there might not be getting the right attention from their parents because parents of course the navigating different roles at home being the mom being the dad being the spouse or even being the manager as it may because a lot of people are now working from home so kids are dealing with this of course dealing with this very being for the very difficult for them to deal with and of course this will of course have of effects on kids not only now but also
3:07 am
potentially later so taking care of their kids' well being while being at home is very important but also i think to be very difficult to do for parents also managing different roles at home at the same time i get the impression from what you're saying that obviously there is a very wide range of impacts and very many different ways that people are going to be experiencing this said many different ages as well i'm going to be slightly unfair and ask you to try and narrow down what people can do to try to alleviate any stress tension they might be feeling under lockdown both as parents with children but also as individuals themselves. well thank you for that question i think to be to be very concrete on this some things that we can do when we are in lockdown or are either confined to physical spaces is to kind of create some kind of physical boundaries in our home so for example if people are dealing with
3:08 am
managing multiple roles or dealing with kids while working at the same time having a physical boundary such as an additional space where you can do your work from or separate yourself just to kind of find some me time is very important but at the same time i'm most were very conscious of the fact that a lot of people don't have additional space to call their working room or having a private space to actually work in and in this case i'd like to recommend to have much more mental boundaries and with mental injuries actually mean living up to the routines that you normally do in your day to day life getting up in the morning getting dressed you know just mainly kind of finish making sure that you finish work at a certain time these kind of routines and habits that we have that help us to give us a sense of control of our environment and this is very very important especially if we're put into again into another lockdown and dealing with a lot of uncertainty this is a way of kind of creating a sense of ownership of our environment which also has a positive effect on our psychological psychological wellbeing really interesting
