numbers are really stunning we can do something about it but that something right now is public health measures. other cities are also introducing new measures some at a certain factions among them hong kong where officials are asking people to work from home there are also further restrictions on restaurants and gyms in just a few hours' time the u.k. is set to begin its massive vaccination program off to approving thousands of axing elderly people and national health staff will be among the 1st to guess not kill a cent i'll have more about the vaccine rollout little later in the program but 1st this report from our brand california's new coronavirus restrictions. the new rules prohibit gatherings of more than one house will close down personal service businesses like hair and dale salons and restrict stores to 20 percent capacity restaurants are closed for indoor and outdoor dining with takeaway and delivery

comprehensive bold covert relief legislation. and so now backs against a wall with the forming deadline looming we're racing to accomplish what should been done months ago outgoing president donald trump announced a so-called vaccine summit at the white house for tuesday but pfizer and derna are the 2 companies with vaccine candidates under review have declined to attend official say the surge dating back to the thanksgiving holiday in november has not yet pete and they are warning people against big family gatherings for the christmas and hanukkah holidays later this month robert oulds al-jazeera los angeles. south korea says it secured millions of coronavirus vaccines amid a growing surge of infections they are buying vaccines from for pharmaceutical companies an additional $10000000.00 doses will be provided by the world health organization the total is enough to cover 84 percent of the population but the

inoculation program will only begin to monitoring other countries rollouts for a few months. of a broad joins me now live from saul tell us more about south korea's vaccine plan and particularly this bit about whiting to see how the rollout goes elsewhere. it is a very comprehensive plan and pearlie south korea has not rushed into into this it hasn't had to rush into this it has been unveiled this tuesday and obviously culminates in an awful lot of behind the scenes negotiations with the world's major pharmaceutical companies all the companies at the forefront of this vaccine rollout the likes of astra zeneca pfizer johnson and johnson and also as you mentioned there some vaccine will come from this w.h.o. supported program but there's going to be enough vaccine to vaccinate $44000000.00 people total that's pretty much the whole of the south korean population but interestingly is this
7:07 am
a question of the time table the 1st of this vaccine won't arrive here in south korea until next march when we're going to see obviously the priority groups will come 1st the elderly people in nursing homes frontline care workers and then there will be this gradual rolling out as more vaccine is imported and we're going to see more people being vaccinated but this program extends all the way through until the end of 2021 so it is certainly not a rushed program and it seems as though the south korean government as people here had expected do not have to rush into this they are pretty much on top of it yes we are into this 3rd wave there has been a recent surge as we get into colder winter months but certainly not the kind of acute crisis being faced by other parts of the world so the south korean government does have the luxury of waiting to see how these vaccines perform in other parts of the world and also conducting its own tests before the 1st batch ever goes into
7:08 am
a south korean arm and south korea ramped up its standard flu vaccine program this year and i believe encountered some problems with misinformation and people were a bit afraid and wondering could the country's response to that now serve as a sort of blueprint for the coronavirus rollers. it does serve as a bit of a lesson there was concern about this general vaccination campaign against the flu the government to roll this out a number of weeks ago because what they wanted to avoid is a so-called twin demick and early on they had very ambitious plans to vaccinate millions and millions of people but there were a number of deaths a few deaths at the start which people thought could be linked to the vaccine people naturally had concerns about that an obviously public confidence is very important when you are getting into a mass vaccination campaign so very quickly the south korean government had to be very transparent investigate each and every one of these deaths and i think as of
7:09 am
this tuesday we've had something like 20000000 people being a vaccine for the general flu vaccine and 108 people of that group have since died so the government has gone through each one of these deaths as said they 'd are not linked to this vaccine to try to allay people's fears and i think generally it does seem to have worked the government is still on course to have this general flu vaccine campaign completed in the next month or so which does you would think bode well for when the coronavirus vaccine comes along especially as we've had this delayed roll that only starting next spring. ok thanks for that rob mcbride live from seoul. a high level inquiry into last year's mass shooting at 2 new zealand mosques was found failings by the police and intelligence it says nothing could have stopped the attack australian gunman brenton terence is serving life in prison without parole for murdering 51 worshippers and. the world commission has made

it's about to snow again in afghanistan which is the forecast for tuesday seems quite significant go across the north next as well following that it's much quieter weather for iran the next system next westerly waves it might divide probably won't make much of an impact and between the 2 we're going to have 3 days of a fairly stiff breeze dropping temperatures in bahrain and qatar but nicosia on cyprus reflects what this westley wave could have done if it went across into iraq we want some storms or shots the next 3 days and they'll tend to move up into what's turkey you might get a tailwind as far south as gaza it just shows partly cloudy in the forecast but i would say the likelihood of a shower even asunder storm out of that but otherwise it's a fairly quiet looking picture with a cooling breeze going down through your way towards oman muskets maintaining 26 degrees and the seasonal rains are going science out of tropical african other's toes some big showers in the forecast in parts of kenya maybe tanzania but

parole. is founder and chief executive of the leadership network and has worked extensively with new zealand's muslim community she joins us by skype from auckland thank you so much for your time how did you feel reading this report. thank you kurt haven't young board look i think the report and its findings no surprise and you would hear that unanimously from muslims across new zealand so we welcome the find it and we welcome the opportunity that the government has actually excepted all of the recommendations however it is unfortunate when no responsibility is taken along side a report like this so it's a shame to have to say to hear things like nothing could have been done to avoid the terrorist attack yes my next question because they're saying oh look you know that the licensing there was perhaps an issue with the with the firearms licensing
7:17 am
and how he was able to get this weapon you know there was an issue with the focus being on quote islamic extremism but you know even with all of that nothing could have been done i mean that must be frustrating. yet it look at steeply frustrating muslims who have been under the scrutiny of surveillance full of very very long time could tell you that they have been talking about threats towards game for decades now and so it is a shame that you know not only have we been hurt as a community but that agencies who know that they've actually made mistakes are saying that they could have done nothing to prevent those mistakes from happening so like i said as well as welcoming as it is to have the government accept all 44 recommendations as great as it is to have a report that does not say anything that is too surprising it is a shame but actually no one is going to take on civility for what happened last year i read your opinion column in stuff today and it's interesting we were just
7:18 am
looking at the images of just send in the wake of the attack. because i was struck by your observation that despite the general discourse in the wake of the attacks there look how kind of empathetic a reason we're all one nation you know all of this you said that the mosque shootings exacerbated the otherness of being muslim in new zealand can you explain that for me. yeah and i think what i mean by that says that we are not unique in that experience being muslims and new zealand. we are living in a distrustful environment where coming from countries that are constantly under scrutiny and war and conflict and displacement it does mean that we are now a body of people around the world who lack trusts not only within society and those from those around us but within our communities and so the terrorist attacks have just made that experience will exacerbate it and that is that is what i meant my
7:19 am
opinion piece it is a shame that you feel the otherness from those around you that who won't be muslim but then to have distrust within the community added on top of that with the trauma that you've experienced is very difficult to navigate i definitely noticed as as a new zealand journalist pre and post the attacks the stories where people journalists were going up next and trying to engage with the muslim community because you didn't see a lot of that before the attack but coming back to your opinion piece you say you believe there is a lack of importance placed on engaging a diverse faith community instead liaising with the most visible loud and accessible talk to me about that. yeah well i think it's easy right those who are visible those who did those who are accessible are easy to engage because it's just there and you know you know you can easily call upon them but what that means is that we mess
7:20 am
a large proportion of the community who are most deeply affected those who might not have the language skills those who might not know the system those who suffer the most in terms of the system and it's discrimination and we've completely missed the opportunity to engage those people and this rush to move things along to be kind to move on from the trauma that we experience it has mates that actually in the process of the commission out of 60000 new zealanders we've had 1100 submissions actually if you look at that that's not not even close to the body of people that make up the community here there's also no data to suggest how many muslims actually cut to support at the royal commissions and quire a process so we are talking about scrutiny around whether you know the muslim community more us in fact that really throughout this process and it is just easier to reach out to people who can speak the language and who are

a to what is who might look and sound good but there is a whole group of people out there who need for us to hit a story's most and we have not done that we really appreciate your time thank you so much for coming on the program become the founder and chief executive of the leadership network. thank you. at least 8 opposition activists have been arrested in hong kong it's because they joined an annual protest in march on july sorry an annual protest march on july 1st of this year it was deemed an illegal assembly a number of those arrested which included several former politicians were announced on their social media pages difficult hollande is in hong kong with more these are very prominent pro-democracy figures some of them as you say are former lawmakers here they were arrested for taking part in the protests which usually takes place every year for the past 17 years on the anniversary of hong kong's handover from
