defeated republican incumbent kelly loffler in the other race the democratic challenger has a slim lead alan fischer reports from atlanta. the results so close the stakes so high but for the democrats raphael warnock claiming a farce victory defeating kelly loeffler so i come before you tonight as a man who knows that the improbable journey that led me to this place in this historic moment in america. could only happen here. we were told that we couldn't when the selection but tonight we proved that with hope hard work and the people by our side. anything. is possible. because the 1st african-american elected to the senate from georgia a state which has been overwhelmingly republican for a generation the 2nd race remains too close to call democrat george also of leads

the every vote no even more important as a possible game changer in washington the 1st victory is good news for joe biden but he really needs both seats without it he won't be able to push on with his agenda and address issues he believes have been neglected over the past 4 years like climate change health care and racial injustice 3000000 early votes were cast in georgia a record and it's no clear that help the democrats there was a big turnout on the day a new problems reported with the running of the election we didn't have any issues the election our reporting is gone relatively smoothly so we feel like the counties are going to getting in the groove despite the fact we know they're all exhausted from the last week georgia has been the center of the u.s. political universe the importance of the vote here couldn't have been more clearly illustrated with both the incoming and outgoing president spending time campaigning in the state but even donald trump's appearance not enough to carry both candidates

over the line georgia by the way all eyes are no on the 2nd senate race the final vote in the 2020 election cycle one that has changed the face of america but done nothing to heal the deep divisions in the country alan fischer al-jazeera atlanta georgia. and joining us live from atlanta let's talk about that when for rafael one where does that leave the run elf. well as many of our viewers probably already know the democrats needed to to flip both of those republican senate seats to gain control of the senate we're just hearing that the democratic senate candidate john awesome is declaring victory in a news conference he's holding now but that has not been confirmed the percentage point i'm going to shift right now to the race between john ossa and senator david
4:05 pm
purdue is very close it's less than half a percentage point right now about 16000 votes that would take us into recount territory and already senator produced campaign released a statement early this morning saying that he believes he will be victorious but that he's going to exhaust every resource available to ensure that every vote is counted again i just want to give you some up to date news that we're hearing which is that the democratic senator senate candidate john awesome is claiming that he has one if in fact he was elected he would become the youngest senator in the senate in 40 years he's just 33 years old but shifting back to this historic day for georgia with the win of reverend raphael and now senator elect warnock i'm standing in front of the ebenezer baptist church in atlanta it's the spiritual home of the civil rights icon dr martin luther king and this is where the reverend has

been a senior pastor he says he had said even if he was elected senator he would continue to preach here his story really and clearly resonated with many people he was one of chuck 12 children who grew up in public housing his father was a world war 2 veteran he said during his last campaign appearance with president elect joe biden only in america could my 82 year old mother who picked cotton vote for me as senator and but he did say that as much as his story was one of the america. dream and promise he felt that it was slipping away and both he and john during their campaigns really spoke to georgians about issues they felt would ameliorate their quality of life expanding health care creating a livable wage ensuring that there was criminal justice reform and promoting clean energy and most importantly especially in a state with a heavy percentage of black voters getting an effective in their words pandemic

response they're going to bring us up to date with what's happening on the ground in atlanta in georgia but in georgia generally for these runoffs well supporters of donald trump stars are gathering in washington d.c. as congress meets to certify joe biden's election victory they are backing trump's unproven claims the november poll was fraudulent the president's praise the protests and promised to appear later at the so-called march to save american national guard troops have been deployed in this city the mayor's request not john hendren is in washington d.c. where protesters have been gathering shihab rattansi is at the white house he's going to have more on what we can expect from today's certification debate and we're going to hear from them in just a few minutes to the certification is going to mark the final stage in the process to officially declare biden as the 46 president of the united states i was proud to call han explains in this era of donald trump it is expected to be controversial an unprecedented. this announcement of the state of the vote it's supposed to be
4:08 pm
a formality. the us vice president along with members of congress receiving the certified votes from the states donald trump of new york has received for president of the united states 304 votes and declaring the election over by president al gore did it george w. bush of the state of texas has received for president of the united states 271 votes and he had just lost the election to george bush by just over 500 votes the vice president votes but his vice president my pence prepares to take the gavel he is under pressure to throw out joe biden's win and i hope mike hits comes through for us i have. was revised brazil. a great vice president comes through for us he's a great guy. for us if he doesn't come through a lot like a quite as much according to the constitution the vice president doesn't have the

power to do what the president wants but more than 100 house republicans and at least 13 senators have promised to try i have an announcement georgia. i january 2nd i will it 6 just to feel like troy was 1000 they're calling for an emergency audit of the vote and are threatening to challenge the results for key states if they don't get it we've got tens of millions of americans now think this election was stolen we need to get to the bottom of it again what's what's explained we need to explain it get that off the table to be clear there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud even though the trump campaign has filed almost 60 lawsuits claiming that there is all of which have been thrown out by the courts but if these republicans do object to certify the results from certain states the each chamber will debate each challenge for up
4:10 pm
to 2 hours before voting on whether to certify the results it's unlikely they have the votes to actually change the outcome challenges have been made in the past but never with these kinds of numbers i would like to see it named for what it is which is the republicans are making a plea to get rid of democracy and and and offer something else which looks like entrenched politicians get to decide who the next leader is and it's absolutely breathtaking as a matter of constitutional basics never before has the loser of a presidential election refused to concede or call the election stolen but for president trump this is one more precedent breaking move on his way out a last ditch and likely futile attempt to stay in power patty go out to 0. ok let's speak to see how the town see who's at the white house for us see how this was a certification fight that even the republican senate leader mitch mcconnell didn't
4:11 pm
want to have and it sounds like things are going to get very tense over the next few hours. and we're expecting perhaps an impassioned speech from mitch mcconnell the senate majority leader as part of these proceedings imploring his colleagues not to challenge the certified election results from each of the states nonetheless it is expected that there will be challenges a great deal now a focus on mike pence because donald trump continues to repeat on twitter but mike pence has the power to reject certified states electoral college votes he does not but but once again overnight told trump tweeted as much there were reports that on tuesday mike pence trump had lunch at the white house where mike pence explained to donald trump that he did not have the constitutional power to reject electoral college votes that subsequently donald trump's campaign denied that mike pence have
4:12 pm
said that but there are several sources the rest of the my friends did say that but that's going to be very interesting perhaps that mike pence may try to inject some rhetorical flourish which would reflect some of the concerns in the meantime though the main questions now is how long is this going to take we know that at least 13 senators and over 100 perhaps up to 140 members of the house are prepared to challenge the results and we know that 3 states will be challenged arizona relatively early this will be an alphabetical roll call of states arizona relatively early and georgia pennsylvania will be challengers patty said each time a result is challenge it adds another 3 hours at least also to proceedings if 3 other states where donald trump is challenging the vote are also challenged and this could go on into the morning if if wisconsin if michigan and arizona are a challenge then these proceedings could go on until the early morning of thursday she had thanks very much indeed obviously we're going to be coming back to you as
4:13 pm
things develop during the next few hours before that she had her town say thank you very much indeed for more on the save america protest we're going to speak to john hendren who's in washington d.c. for us is talk us through what's been happening there john. well the 1st of thousands of protesters most of the ones we're seeing right now are pro trump protesters have started to gather we are outside of what is about to be a women for america 1st rally there's also a mother's for america rally happening there a number of groups the proud boys a group that has been linked with white supremacy isn't their leader was arrested coming into d.c. because of a previous protest in which he and a group of others burned a black lives matter flag that had been stolen from a mostly black church where i'm standing out front of the treasury that's the white building behind me and just beyond that there you can't see it in this frame is the white house and i just want to show you a little of what's happening here the mall for washington is down this street and
4:14 pm
what we have is thousands of people marching there most of them carrying flags other trump memorabilia. and later on today we expect to see groups that are against these people and he trump protesters and teeth and others coming out to protest against this counter protest which after all is all about defying this congressional vote which is expected to elect joe biden as president formally most of the people that we see out here are pro trump and they want to see that process overturned there's no reason to believe as you heard earlier there's no reason to believe there's any way that that can happen today but we're all in suspense because we don't really know what's going to happen so you've got people out here just making their voices heard saying they want donald trump to be the president of
4:15 pm
the united states once more to fight despite the fact that he's been pretty decisively defeated in the electoral college john thanks very much indeed john hendren talking to us from the streets of washington d.c. of those protests. ok clyde wilcox is a professor of government at georgetown university he's joining us live by skype from doha good to have you with us i want to talk to you about raphael warnock victory 1st of all in georgia and respective of what happens in the senate later on the very fact that raphael warnock has had a win is very significant isn't it yes he's the 1st african-american senator elected from georgia but he's more than just an african-american senator he's a powerful pastor of the largest and most significant african-american church in the south and so he's a great orator he's a powerful speaker it's a major win one of the things that is significant about this on sunday noticeable to to those of us outside the united states is the turnout in georgia it's even
4:16 pm
higher if i understand it correctly than it was in the presidential election what has motivated that and particularly why is it resonated so much with black voters. well so the georgian republican party has done voter suppression efforts for the last decade or more and tracy abrams was one of the people who lost the election as a result of those efforts so she has dedicated a lot of time to building a grassroots organization that did door to door with masks in a difficult time it was disadvantaged because the churches are not open also they can't go to the churches which are a big way to mobilize african-americans looks like you've won both of these senate seats and that i think bodes well for america because with a 5050 senate there's a need to come to the center right the democrats have at least one very conservative senator a mansion republicans have
4:17 pm
a couple of moderate senators as well so instead of maybe the 2 sides watching each other all the call and there's a possibility of. let me ask you about the certification process that we're going to be seeing in the next few hours republicans certainly in the senate seem to be in a rather difficult position because in the one hand they risk incurring the wrath of donald trump if they oppose him on the other side if they decide to side with donald trump and essentially ignore the will of the people they risk the wrath of the people themselves it's going to be very difficult to be able public and senator yes i think really the wrath of donald trump is not so much an issue because donald trump has lost and he will probably not win an election for years but the wrath of his voters who are convinced that it is going to throttle election so ted cruz for example is trying to lead the senate after if you want to be president you watch it very badly and so he's hoping that he can be the one who captures that maybe

the e.u. medicines regulators recommended the madonna covert 19 vaccine be approved for people aged 18 and over still needs to be given the green light by the european commission the region seeing high rates of infections as the new highly contagious variant spreads there's been strong criticism of the slow pace of vaccinations across parts of europe west of us and joining us now live from amsterdam so this madonna vaccine has taken one step forward what happens now. well all these important decisions if in fact seen as safe enough to be used by europeans are taken here in amsterdam at the headquarters of the european medicine agency and they have been taking their time if you look at the united states for example or the u.k. the modern fact scene has been administered there for weeks already on monday this week a had delayed. decision that they were taking on this vaccine because i needed more
4:20 pm
information but now they have finally given this so-called conditional marketing authorization for europeans to be using this vaccine we have to wait for the european commission approval also that will be expected within the next 2 days and then this vaccine can travel to all that's why the south and member states within the european union and everyone was really waiting for the has been pressure coming from germany because they have been using only this one fact sci fi so buy intact for the last 2 weeks and they have been vaccinated very quickly so they were running out of exene and they were waiting for this new vaccine to come to the market as soon as possible one of the countries that has been criticized for slow rulers of its vaccine is of course the netherlands where you are why has it been so slow there. well that's a very good question it's quite embarrassing
4:21 pm
a lot of experts were complaining they said it's frustrating that the ferry well organized country it's supposed to be the nat'l and is doing so slow and making so many mistakes in this vaccination program the government has come under huge criticism they had to defend themselves and follow him and. they. barely escaped resignation the major issue here was mismanaged basically a miscalculation on the where this vaccine should be distributed through the minister has admitted all these mistakes it's basically also accept larry for the whole treatment this covert 19 up in that mix so slowly here and there's also a lot of debate on who is getting the vaccine 1st so finally the government decided medical workers are workers an elderly homes are getting these vaccinations 1st in a couple of weeks from now. for a few weeks i mean and then the elderly which of course an utter carnage which we see pictures of very happy 19 year olds being facts unaided well the elderly in the

netherlands will have to wait maybe a few more months so thanks very much to do that service and talking to us from. u.k. judge has denied bail for wiki leaks founder julian assange is accused of endangering lives by publishing hundreds of thousands of confidential documents on monday a judge rejected a request by u.s. prosecutors to extradite asuncion grounds of his mental health let's cross over to westminster magistrate's court in london well paul brennan is a live for us what was the reason for rejecting the bail. well the reason that the judge rejected the bell having listened to the arguments both for the u.s. authorities and for the defense of julian a son's were as follows basically just for nessa brights saying that had fled before despite stringent conditions that he would that she was satisfied that he would likely fail to surrender and that he was willing to fly it shown that he was
4:23 pm
willing to flout the order of this court stringent conditions have done nothing to stop him last time that was the argument that was suddenly put forward by the u.s. or forty's but all they knew was the lawyer representing the u.s. authorities in the courts over my shoulder concerned that despite the ruling on monday that execution would be oppressive given sanchez mental states that the u.s. authorities wanted the option to appeal and they are going to appeal but the coeditor of wiki leaks kristinn hrafnsson said today's bail hearing bail decision was puzzling in his words illogical. we think it's unjust and unfair and illogical. when you consider the ruling 2 days to go about to do nuance health. of course is because in large part because he
4:24 pm
is being held in bell most prison. to send him back there doesn't make any sense. and that is essentially to the point of what the judge is also saying that is that this case is not result that the u.s. still has the option of appealing to julian our sons will have to stay behind boss at belmarsh prison while we wait for that appeal to be heard there hasn't been a date set for that but in the meantime julian assange will remain in custody that's paul brennan bring us up to date from outside westminster magistrate's court in london paul thank you. as time for the weather is rob. the remains of cycling image in the here that produced flooding in tropical queen's than 2 to 300 movies a rain fell there's that potential still but in smaller areas i think during says day or friday down through queens and just touching new south wales beyond that is not particularly warm the middle twenty's are some sunshine and

trumpet its achievements but in his opening address north korea's leader kim jong un admitted his country has failed economically going through what he called the worst of the worst. the country's 5 year economic development plan finished last year and we fell short of our goal significantly in almost every sector. already facing international sanctions the country has virtually sealed itself off from the outside world during the global pandemic it suffered further during typhoons and flooding over the summer that damaged infrastructure and crops. and the end of the trumpet ministration means the end of the road for the unprecedented period of summit diplomacy with the united states in october north korea put on an impressive show of strength at the 75th anniversary of the ruling party's founding but kim

seem to be suffering the strains of recent setbacks kim jong un must be really really frustrated even saw disappointed are barred lack of any progress you specially on the front of economic development since the breakdown of the summit meeting with the u.s. president on trial in a noisy so north korean leadership has been basically flailing trying this and that without any well coordinated strategy north korea watchers will be looking in the coming days of this congress for any clues about kim's likely approach to the new administration of u.s. president elect joe biden and whether there will be a return to more traditional arm's length diplomacy. the 1st test could come soon with a possible announcement of resumed military exercises between u.s. and south korean forces in the spring which had been largely suspended during
4:34 pm
trump's term you have a very narrow window of opportunity very limited amount of time for biden or the musicians to. 1 strike a conversation and dialogue with north korean regime so close to the inauguration north korea's position for now seems to be a cautious wait and see. robert bright al-jazeera so. benjamin so much time is a nonresident fellow at the stinson center and editor of the website north korean economy watch he's joining us live by skype from west to salem it's good to have you on al-jazeera thanks very much indeed for joining us give us some context here this is a very high neutral statement from the leader of north korea what's pushed kim jong un to do it. well so in fact kim jong un has been relatively forthcoming about the problems in the economy over the past 2 years he's frequently criticized officials for 4 months and apologized several times for people suffering so it's
4:35 pm
not that unusual really but i mean what is the situation or 3 is there now it's extremely dire ways as your report mentioned both sanctions and to the border closure by the north korean authorities due to cover 19 so they are in a very very tight spot for sure and there's very little that kim jong un can do but really admit that that's really the key question is it's like it's not so much this is a situation that they're not apologising is one thing but doing something about it is quite another but is there anything that on the government can actually do given the structure of the country give it covert 19 whatever the impact it's having inside north korea because really we don't know. now and it's very very hard to say i mean in the short run what the government could do is loosen up some of the very very stark regulations that they essentially any import from coming through the border even from china right now. but the state is very paranoid about the virus entering the country and they're even i mean even when things like food supplies
4:36 pm
and good like that like even. contamination and they like that so it's given the situation and given the choices that the regime has made there is very very little to do and i would be very interesting to see what kim jong un will propose or what he'll announce the if they are scheduled to announce a new 5 year plan and given the current situation though they're going to be very creative create anything about them i mean historically china has been the one to step in and help north korea outs when it's been facing problems before but i understand we're just looking at some figures out earlier the trade with china as a party plummeted by about 80 percent in the 1st 11 months of 2020 to china to try and do something or does it have to wait until north korea allows china to help. i suspect that the latter is true that china will have to wait until north korea allows it to increase trade because even during sanctions during the past couple of years or so china has been conducting much more in the trade with
4:37 pm
north korea than before and it seems to me that china is ready and able to increase that trade even more but again the problem is that the regimes own border closure no one really knows how flexible they're prepared to be or how bad the situation will have to get for the government to reassess that policy as we know of course it's very difficult to get any sort of information about what life is like on the ground on a daily basis from north korea but let me ask you to speculate given the fact that the kim jong un has been pushed to make this submission and you say he's made several apologies in the past is there any sense that people within north korea might become dissatisfied with the regime to the point where the try to do something about it i think it's definitely a possibility and that's really what what they're genus most worried about and i i would say the biggest concern is people in the middle class and upper middle class
4:38 pm
who become used to a much higher standard of living over the past few years then they than they were used to say in the 1990 s. and it's very that the big problem you have it's one that is taken away when you can't buy imported goods in the stores anymore that's when you really have a problem especially if people don't see any any sense that things might get better soon in the future. but definitely a risk just because it hasn't happened on a large scale before this need that it will never happen in the future so absolutely really interesting to get the benefits of your expertise in this benjamin silberstein we appreciate it thank you very much thank you for having me. venezuela's president and it is not has tightened his grip on power with the swearing in of a national assembly controlled by his socialist party now marks the end of control by the opposition who boycotted last month's election because they said it wasn't free or fair there is a boat has more. the pictures of latin america's independence hero.
