how they got into the capitol obviously is going to be a subject for many people to investigate but here in this moment right now in this very moment who are seeing people get into the capitol to try and intimidate and scare the legislators who are simply trying to walk home the constitution is a remarkable moment one that i don't think anyone thought we'd see in our lifetime . and as he let me bring you some more reaction coming in from inside the chamber can see a tweet there for me go home bitch the tweet reads they're in the chamber one is up on the dice yelling trump one the election and then the comment this is insane certainly pretty much unprecedented and we are getting more reports of similar scenes going on in the side the chamber. and then on the standoff at the door of the chamber as well and guns being drawn reports coming
11:01 pm
in. from the reuters news agency among other and pool reports as well 2. again patty asking you for reaction reaction because you know the building so well what do you make of that tweet that they're someone inside shouting trump has won the election. it's absolutely insane it is never ever happened before the let me tell you about the u.s. capitol underneath there's a lot of tunnels that go from all of the different house buildings to overtake your theory here not sure what's going on here somebody has been turned into an ambulance with. people following. i'm not sure why people are following this personally piers that somebody. out there they're applauding that person have to wonder if perhaps that the person who was in a standoff with. police. you see police or where the police are surrounding
11:02 pm
that ambulance another thing to point out it's in the middle pendennis nobody's wearing a mask but these are supporters of whoever that is a real ambulance again this is a scene that we never thought we'd see in the united states of america. so let me tell you about the building if the lawmakers are and here you have to have a task they were letting anyone in before they stormed and who didn't have an access to capital underneath the capitol there's a series of trains and tunnels that connect from that building over there to the all of these buildings and all the sort of buildings over there so you can easily secure those tunnels which i'm sure is something that the that the police and national guard are going to be working. on patty it's been about an hour now since we 1st off you you get the sense that
11:03 pm
the police the national guard have got things not even more under control at least outside of the building. no no you don't get that sense and that's been one of the most shocking things about the police response when we saw these protesters try on the other side of the capitol jump the fence so what they did was day. with a didn't was they did curiosus event a lot of people came over here and we saw there was a line of police and they were able to push their way through now where they have to gain access to capital from here we don't know but i think we should take a moment to stop and think about what's happening here this is the united states capitol the representative of the american people and it has been overrun by supporters of a president who for the 1st time in descry of this country is refusing to concede the election he has called it stolen he's told these people to come to washington to stop this deal in his words and. this is the chaos that has come from that this
11:04 pm
is going to be a moment of reflection for the country and moment of reflection for the republicans in this capitol that have chosen to support him through all these down of the last 4 years i've covered washington for a very long time never has my network needed to hire security for 3 to cover what should be able to include rational process never before have i seen the national guard and the f.b.i. hostage rescue team come to the capitol to try and secure the people's house the people's ability this is remarkable i don't know i've run out of adjectives this is historic please unprecedented this is in many ways very tragic it shows just how violent this country can get it was never seen this before we've never had a president who called the election stolen when it clearly wasn't but these people believe him and so what we've gone through today is they started this process was going to be working over in that building and the police rushed in and said you
11:05 pm
have to go there's a suspicious package and everyone in the building ran down into the tunnels as i mentioned came out here and what we have seen is just masses of people trying desperately to get into the capitol and apparently succeeding the fact that a protester was able to in fact debt into the house of representatives is on heard of this is a security failure like none that this country has seen perhaps ever but for sure in a very long time right now it's just give you a sense of the scene and i want to get out of the way if you can it doesn't feel like a stylish feels like people are all waiting to see what's going to happen next. it's just it's been remarkable to see the police presence they've shown up but they haven't moved the people out of the capital view or we'll have to see what in fact their strategy is but right now it doesn't seem like the police have you ever had.
11:06 pm
capitol hill for the moment patty thank you. it's going to she have returned see live at the white house a share as we continue to see these remarkable pictures of thousands of people gathered outside capitol hill thousands of trump protesters there to protest against the election result the one that gave joe biden the victory which they of course see is stolen and they see it as stolen because president trump told them it had been stolen a ship a few months ago you and i were on live when there were protests outside the white house for the black lives matter movement is the famous night when the president walked out and then had a photo op with a bible in front of a church compare the police reaction and response there to what we're hearing is happening outside capitol hill now. well i mean throughout those black lies about a protest the police and the national guard on that particular case it was both
11:07 pm
national and the police who assaulted everyone who was in the vicinity of the white house in order to facilitate president trumps to the church that is adjacent to the white house actually just a and interesting thing is just broken record a washington post article was clearly during this black lives matter protests the national guard was stationed around around d.c. and we were often told we could be in d.c. with a band that had guns within half an hour and they were deployed in mass ranks on several of the days when when they were just normal peaceful demonstrations the washington post is now reporting with the public a defense has denied a request by d.c. officials and d.c. officials have to request a national guard to deploy the national guard to the u.s. capitol in washington d.c. off the protesters stormed the building this is the washington post now saying according to that sources the pentagon has denied a request by d.c. officials to bring in the national guard who we saw and along with various sort of weird paramilitary units with no insignia on the streets of d.c.
11:08 pm
during the summer during the black lives matter protest the pentagon is denying according to the washington post d.c. officials that deployment now when the capitol is actually being stormed by pro trump protesters there's another thing the flashing as well various local media and national media now reporting that sort the similar scenes and sadly some attention is being reported around the country in georgia militia members have gathered outside the georgia capitol this is from about 20 minutes ago and brad roughen spargo who we now know who the secretary of state of georgia he released that that tape recording which had donald trump the secretary of state to find him some more votes he and senior staff were escorted out to safety that's georgia so georgia. militia have gathered and then kansas the council state capital in topeka we're on the starting from local. media that protesters have moved inside the kansas state house so those are reports we're getting from around the country that. there are
11:09 pm
demonstrations and attempts to i don't need breeches off the security around capitol buildings in state capitals around the country as well but yes. clearly always contrast to what to the security presence that we saw throughout the black lives matter produced and apparently in what it takes to get some of the reaction from the security forces whether it be at the police or national guard or the paramilitary units who are deployed again we were out here it really didn't take much together to get a face full of pepper spray just to peacefully protesting i clearly one doesn't condone the 1st amendment protesting but certainly authorities today clearly with a much more hands off policy even though we knew the stated intention of groups like the proud boys and other right wing militia type groups was to to really cause to have a wild demonstration we're going to use the adjective donald trump was using in his
11:10 pm
tweets a few days ago. shepparton see with the latest from the white house for the moment thank you. and just to remind viewers we are actually waiting to hear from president elect joe biden to speak obviously the probably would have heard from him anyway on the georgia election results for example with the ongoing session that has now been suspended that was meant to take place in the chamber about certifying his election obviously the recent events of the past hour probably superseded that we are waiting now for president elect joe biden to make a statement we will bring you that live to us soon as we get it here on out jazeera so to viewers joining us now just a reminder that you are seeing the u.s. capitol hill where thousands of trump protesters have tried to storm the building
11:11 pm
there's broken down security barricades and several have managed to get aid we are hearing of a standoff reports of a standoff in the. the chamber and that some of the trump supporters of actually managed obviously to enter the chamber there at capitol hill that happened about an hour ago. there is obviously police presence. as you can see let me bring you some earlier pictures that we got here out just eros you can see some scuffles there is inside obviously capitol hill. some of the thousands of from supporters who had gathered outside capitol hill. to protest against the election results just a few hours ago president trump addressed the crowds that had gathered there saying
11:12 pm
that he would never concede the election and that the election had been stolen so those were recent pictures coming into us from inside the building can see obvious scuffles there inside the building between protesters and the police and we are getting reports that protesters have entered the chamber as well. of course of the. political spectrum to this although obviously this is a very worrying day for anyone who believes in democracy in the united states. let's speak to richard goodstein a democratic political consultant and former adviser to president bill clinton. he
11:13 pm
joins us over skype from washington d.c. mr goodstein thank you so much for joining us 1st of all your reaction to the events of the past hour. which is the worst attack on the united states since $911.00. but the terrorist today is donald trump for president it is he is a bio human being. the degree to which this is frightening is impossible to overstate i mean americans would send inspectors observers to foreign governments to look at elections we will never be able to do that again with a straight face when our president is urging his supporters armed supporters to invade the u.s. capitol to prevent him from being ousted we know he know the day the 2nd that he's out of the white house he's in very much legal jeopardy i think that is probably
11:14 pm
one of the large explanations for why he has encouraged these people but for the president of the united states to encourage this kind of attack on the symbol of the united states government. on one hand it's horrifying on the other hand he sat by when the same thing happened in the state of michigan months ago and he almost routed on the attackers there so it's it is i'm almost moved to tears i don't want to do it because i don't want to embarrass myself on your air but it's that's right and i i work in that building i've worked around it for many years this security is actually not as much as you think it would be. but the fact that we knew this rally was coming and the security was this lax that this is pretty shocking yet you say the security isn't what it should be i think that's becoming more and we are parents to anyone watching these pictures right now considering that is one of the sets of power what is the most powerful country in the war on donald trump tweeted
11:15 pm
at recently urging i guess his supporters to respect the police so what did you make of that attempt at the conference down. you know his supporters know what he means when during that debate he told the proud boys a violent nationalist group to stand down but to stand by and then when he urged them on and there are other the nationalists who supported him to come to d.c. on let's stay presumably to do exactly what they're doing now to keep the electoral votes from being counted i don't think anybody anybody takes seriously anything donald trump says when it when it comes to asking his supporters to stand back that point has long been passed. you say the point has been passed we are waiting to hear from president elect joe biden and just to remind the viewers joining us now and that's the whole reason the capitol hill is the focus of attention because
11:16 pm
it was a session in the chamber to certify the presidential election results election results which have shown that joe biden has won the election and as president elect mr goodstein what do you think joe biden should say at this point joe biden's message from the start of his campaign is being to try to bring people together. he's obviously going to decry this. if i can just make a political observation this is a delicate stain on the republican party it's not just donald trump who incidentally will not run for president again you put that in the bank you say we won't not just because of this. the lowest of low of conduct of his today but ever since the election and certainly before but all these members of the house and senate who stood with him in a fantasy people who were totally untethered from reality to stand to try to
11:17 pm
subvert the will of the voters those people will be tarnished and perhaps even other republicans who didn't stand with trumped just having republican after their name i think is going to be something that's going to be very hard to live down i think joe biden will get try to get past that and say we are all in this could gather he can speak to the strong supporters they will listen to him and honestly i'm not sure what he has the message to say to them but i think everybody else will say this will pass we'll get by and when we do seems like this will be what will not be something that we will descend into when i'm president. richard goodstein thank you for that let's take you straight to capitol hill now you can see scuffles there on the steps of capitol hill people breaking through the barriers entering the building we've already seen pictures before all of the people inside even in the chained up but certainly inside the building you can see dozens
11:18 pm
of people managing to get in now. to give room to get a clear idea of what's happening at the various entrances there but we definitely saw people manage to push their way through. one of the barricades they are stopping them from entering capitol hill but we have seen pictures from inside the building of scuffles between the police and the trump supporters who managed to get in with also had tweets and reports of trying supporters inside the actual chamber also reports of a standoff at the door but it does seem that transport. have managed to get in side the chamber obviously the session that was taking place has been suspended that was a session to certify the presidential election results something that usually in a normal year might be even
11:19 pm
a monday in the event anything but that now it was always going to be controversial it was always going to be a lengthy session. because several republicans were going to contest the votes from some of the key swing states the vote from arizona for example was being debated as protesters stormed capitol hill and some managed to get inside closing for that session to be suspended. passy call hain has reported on the us government for years for us as she is outside the capitol hill and now was outside from the start of this. tell us what you can see and what you assess the situation to be right now. i'm getting the sense that it's calming down a little bit we're seeing a lot of people start to walk away of course they're yelling things at the media which is pretty par for the course in a donald trump administration but we're seeing lots of people walk away yelling go
11:20 pm
trump and other assorted. sordid things excuse me that her family ended up on the air if you could hear that my apologies for that again what we're seeing right now although some people are leaving you can see that these protesters are basically pushed the police back and they are taking over the steps of the united states capitol what you're seeing here in the middle that obviously into the capitol dome over to the side that is the u.s. house of representatives throughout the afternoon we've seen police reinforcements showing out the f.b.i. urgency response team we've seen police in riot gear we just saw a police car on the heavily armed with a look like they are fifteen's but it's seems as if it's calming down i i i'm poly because i'm not in the building i can't tell you exactly what's going on in there but we have seen police throughout the day trying to basically get reinforcements here and give you a sense of how the day is unfolded so basically people here they're just talking
11:21 pm
but the whole perimeter of capitol hill is surrounded by emergency vehicles are day my flower robichaux and i are day started right there in. you can an office building and we're doing live shots talking us the proceedings are getting into the way the 1st objections and the police came storming in to get out get out now get to the tunnel because there's a suspicious package and we came out here and that's when you saw all of these people remember donald trump sudden to speak to them that he was going to walk with them to capitol hill to help protest they march from there to capitol hill and the other side of the building police used tear gas flash bangs to try to get them back i heard one protester say come on guys let's go we're just around the building a bunch of hundreds if not thousands came this way started a small fire and then there was a police line on the stairs of the main capitol building entrance and they could clearly just within the course of 5 minutes push them back how will they got into the united states capitol when the police were well aware of what the president was
11:22 pm
telling his supporters to do will obviously be investigated for a long time but i think the more important thing right now is to take a moment look at what we are seeing in the united states of america which have been a peaceful transfer of power the certification of the electoral results has resulted in this a president who for the 1st time in american history has not only refused to concede but he has refused to in essence admit that he had lost he lost on more than 7000000 votes but the president can't stand the thought of being a loser though he did tell people that it was stolen a lot of these people say they believe him so this is where we're at this is the united states of america the you know the capital has been breached there's reports of an armed standoff we just saw someone rushed into an ambulance and supporters were following that person clapping we don't know yet what that person was doing but right now i think the biggest question is what are the police doing to sort of
11:23 pm
give you a sense of the layout of the building if they had to evacuate the capitol they wouldn't come. here to do it they wouldn't face the crowds there are tunnels underneath the u.s. capitol there's a visitor center over there that's buried well below ground there's tunnels of the library of congress there's tunnels to all of the house and senate office buildings obviously the people and cannon couldn't go back there but the police if they were going to focus on protecting this building they were focused on securing the tunnels that's exactly how people would evacuate so the scene right now is waiting to see what the police do they would see we've been seeing reinforcements come in we've been seeing people leave but they're still hard core supporters and they are on the steps of the united states capitol and apparently some have in fact reached the building what should have been an hour long counting of the electoral college votes certification joe biden's president has turned into this unprecedented
11:24 pm
remarkable scene in front of the united states capitol we're seeing some of those. now police pushing their way through we saw some smoke earlier pension the tear gas as well we can see more of that at the steps of capitol hill. police pushing through. interestingly many in the crowd standing back for the police and that is the point that i wanted to make to you in the past few minutes we've had another tweet from president crumb in this tweet president from says i am asking for everyone of the u.s. capitol to remain peaceful no violence remember re are the party of law and order respect the law and our great men and women in blue thank you that tweet the past few minutes from president trump about half an hour ago 40 minutes ago he had
11:25 pm
started tweeting saying. telling his supporters to support capitol police and law enforcement to stay peaceful but i guess. sort of beefed up that sentiment with a 2nd tweet do you think that tweet is going to have any impact patty. no probably not i mean it's a little late to put the toothpaste back in the jar in the bottle isn't it i mean this is a president who since the election has been saying it was stolen he told his supporters they had to come to capitol hill in his words to stop the steel you know we knew that this had the potential for violence secret service put out a statement saying remember guns are not allowed in washington d.c. there is no open carry in d.c. but so the president telling his supporters say peaceful well obviously that that's gone they've already breached the capitol building so it seems unlikely that that's going to do much i think when the president realizes this has the potential to cost
11:26 pm
him a lot of political capital i mean this is i think for many it's going to be simply a step too far they republicans have put up with his rhetoric they've put up with him telling people that. all of his policies and all of his racist comments but now he i think you can clearly put a connection between his tweets his words to what we're seeing here in the united states capitol. for the moment we'll leave it there we will of course come back to you soon for more developments now let's speak to derek plummer a former director of african american media affairs for the democratic national committee he is in washington d.c. right now and joins me now derek plummer can you hear me. ok. and great to have you and your reaction to it and especially i'm guessing what you may call the police reaction or i guess trying to prevent this from happening which
11:27 pm
presumably isn't a massive surprise really considering that thousands of people have turned out to protest against the certification of the vote. sure listen i protested on the grounds of the u.s. capitol peaceful protests works at the u.s. capitol i worked at the democratic national committee which is around the corner i've never seen anything like this and it is disgraceful it is shameful what the president of the united states has fomented in in the form of donald trump he lost a fair and free election he made it very clear that he was not going to go quietly into the night and what we are seeing is what we see when we don't have law and we don't have a functioning democracy and what i would say is that what this moment shows us and tells us that democracy is so fragile even with the united states it is fragile.
11:28 pm
and it depends upon people of good will doing the right thing and we've said this so many of us have said this for many years that donald trump. was morally in net he was corrupt he did not believe in our democracy nor in the will of the people and what we're seeing today is a very clear manifestation of that and it set and the reality is that having worked in the capital haven't seen protests at the capital peaceful protests at the capital before then the level of force as you can see from the capitol police from the national guard is is overwhelming and this is not what you would see what you're seeing today there's no way that let's be honest these were black protesters they would have been able to storm the capitol we were seeing tear gas and we're seeing a whole bunch of different mechanisms being brought out there are rumors that speaker pelosi and the mayor of d.c. have called on deal d. to actually have the national guard come in and initial requests were rejected i
11:29 pm
can't. i can't see that but it's very very troubling it's very troubling what we're seeing red. and derek i don't know whether you can see the pictures now we're showing some pictures coming in to us from inside the capitol building now we've been following the story for the past hour and a half or so and at the beginning we saw a few protesters inside the building 1520 we're getting reports of people inside the very chamber but now what we're seeing is i mean it's hard to tell obviously because it's just one shot but i'm guessing at hundreds of people that have managed to get into the capitol building so i guess that speaks of you know the surprise that you were showing at the protesters being allowed to get in so easily presumably and. just another question do you think that this was inevitable i mean we have seen the ratcheting up of tensions in the country really since trump was
11:30 pm
elected certainly since the election i mean you might be surprised but do you think it was inevitable at some point that something like this would happen. it was an inevitable. who is a reality now is that we are seeing. what will be a failed to do coup in undermining our democracy and that was not inevitable i think we've seen signs that trump in his supporters and his neighbors have allowed this thing to happen incrementally so when he was impeached last year there was an opportunist oculus when he thought the claim that he won the election that it was fraud in our free and fair elections were corrupted there should have been some on the republican side actually all of them should have said no that is not act rick that is not our democracy and they have allowed this to erode i think
11:31 pm
again our friendship marxian it's a shame so it was inevitable but i think it was absolutely foreseeable based upon the things we see in terms of how president trump has literally corrupted. many functions of our democracy. our government and i think even when we've seen over the last few weeks in terms of the resignation of someone like. attorney general barr the rest of the firing of the former defense secretary and being replaced by people who imus is probably not standing up to trump and i think that's what we're seeing a reflection of today and that rick let me show you and our viewers as well some pictures some still images that are coming into us here at al-jazeera so you can see that those are pictures of guns being grown inside the chambers if you look through this protesters out there and i'm guessing chamber security it's hard to tell obviously but guns drawn inside the trailer so this would confirm some of the
11:32 pm
other reports that we have been getting over the past that 45 minutes or so or so of guns being drawn. inside the chamber itself so not just outside it's a pretty shocking images. derek plummer what do you think the actual aim or what do you think the power is of these protesters they've disrupted obviously the session that was going on to certify the vote that's unlikely to start again certainly today i would guess but in the long term what is this is is it intimidation that is their ultimate weapon. well i think in the long term it's going to be. a tremendous stain on the republican party. you know the last elections last night in georgia they lost the presidency in november and joe biden is going to be the president united states 14 days i
11:33 pm
think the political capital that trump was hoping he would have it would be very difficult to will any type of political capital when people see your actions as being seditious they will see your accident action as undermining democracy even as actions being seen as being treasonous and so i think it's going to be very very difficult for the republican party moving forward and you know quite frankly this is a bet that they made and they are lining and i think what you can see is that the vast majority of americans who are going are going to denounce what they're seeing today you know while there is a vocal and apparently violent crowd in front of the u.s. capitol they will not prevail they will not in our democracy but again what i said earlier is that what we've seen from this president and what we've seen from his republican aide enablers is that they have allowed the roots of our democracy over the course of the last 4 years and it's going to take
11:34 pm
a lot of work to deal with the torn down. very clever it's great to get your thoughts thank you for joining us the democratic strategist and former regional press secretary and director of african-american media affairs for the democratic national committee thank you ok let's go to shepherdstown see it was live at the white house for us but monitoring all reaction to these extraordinary events that we're seeing take place both outside capitol hill and of course inside the building itself as she had what are you what's happened recently when it comes to reaction that's that out for you. i think well i'll get the reaction a 2nd but we are having reports of multiple reports now on police order that a woman and we may have already used these pictures i'm not sure but a woman who is being carried out is in critical condition after being shot in the chest on capitol grounds that's multiple media reports i've also a police or d.n.a. from the scala can apparently confirming that a woman was hit and was shot in the chest and is now in critical condition but we have no other details of what exactly happened we are getting more republican
11:35 pm
senators and members of the trump family now tweeting out requests for peace to prevail ivanka trump among studies american patriots any security breach or disrespect while the workforce which is only acceptable the violence must stop immediately please be peaceful rubio the republican side and calling on mr on the president mr president the men and women of law enforcement are on results it's crucial you help restore order by sending results is to assist the police and also those doing this to stand down that's a striking tweet on several on several levels because. the and that what we see is a number of republican tweets that talk about the the men and women of law enforcement ivanka trump 2 don't attack the police it's capitol hill it's being attacked it's actually the branch of the of american democracy that's being attacked as it was about to confirm that joe biden was the julie elected president of the united states or should be deliberate for judge of the 20th that it seems to
11:36 pm
be a lie did in the lot of these tweets we're getting from republicans and members of the trump family that concentrating more on attacks on the police and how good a good right winger would never do that i suppose marco rubio of course in that way and you'll see a lot of this kind of american exceptionalism throughout fema throughout a lot of the comments that marco rubio has in his usual way managed to kind of insults and be sort of a bit racist too there's nothing petrol to go about what is occurring on capitol hill this is world style america and the king i mean you get a lot of that from democrats and republicans this idea that the entire world is looking to america as the shining city on the hill. what will they think that you know american democracy appears to be so fragile and and undemocratic and indeed that they may be right wing militias roaming the streets and prepared to do this to the u.s. capitol they say they always seem to be saying it's coming for all benefit that they were because you know what we we don't really understand democracy and we look to america for that leadership we had them chuck schumer earlier on in the senate when he was talking about about the the the rejection of the certified votes in the
11:37 pm
states it was you know we are the shining city on the hill what with the rest of the world think they're looking to us as an example of democracy or an international network on that i would decide on and whether that is the main argument here that that that's at stake the other thing that we've been looking at there is also these reports that in all the state capitals around the country in kansas island georgia that that have been attempts to breach the state capitals and of course in places like georgia where you have open carry all you have you know rather looser gun gun laws and so you do in d.c. the real concerns for the safety particular secretary of state raffensperger who became who who for the international fame because of that tape that was leaked over the weekend which had donald trump attempting to get at them to cajole him into finding more votes and him refusing he was not have to be escorted to safety other than that they were saying that nancy pelosi says he's in a safe place but we all still and i think as your previous guest was talking about
11:38 pm
we're still trying to understand this this idea that the department of defense may have rejected a request from the mayor to bring in the national guard because we how do. we are in the week that the mayor had requested the national guard be deployed and some $348.00 troops to be in place to be used in the event of something happening and then we had these reports in the washington post and elsewhere that the d.o.d. was saying no you cannot have this deployment and we're in a strange situation here in washington always all maryn are authorities in washington citizens as a result by extension don't have control over our streets necessarily when it comes to for. the national guard we all the state where district where the district of columbia and in the end it's federal control over overall streets when in situations like this which is why the national guard we're able to be so easily deployed in the summertime but we've just got a report now. well this is what eyewitness report of national guard troops on their way with a photograph a photograph this is what we have one eyewitness video of national guard troops on
11:39 pm
the move at least so perhaps there are reinforcements on their way but this is basically what i'm gleaning from the feeds that are available to me here at the white house which in fact i suppose given the nature of these right wing protesters these pro trump protests and we understand that the president is still inside here as any recently i've not denounced any of the violence but still keeps exalting his followers not to attack the police at least i would imagine this is probably the safest place in d.c. right now. so she has returned see with the latest from the white house she had for the moment thank you. let's go back to passy call hain who joins us live from capitol hill where she's been since this all started we've been hearing that camera harris the vice president elect to save the nancy pelosi is also being taken to safety just remind us of course of the key event that was going on inside the capitol building and i presume how vulnerable many of those politicians inside
11:40 pm
would have been had they still been in and the crowds had managed to breach when the session was still going on for example. it has been a remarkable scene but just a picture for you we have seen a couple motorcade leave people in that size motorcade usually vice president speaker of the house basically the capitol surrounded by emergency vehicles right now we started across the street cannon as the official count got underway so basically this is posed to be performed all right these boxes are brought into sample to brought in and they start reading in the states and they say these select . joe biden they got arizona they said we're going to contest it so then we saw them go to their different chambers and they started to debate it right it was going to pass it was going to change but these republican core senators and we were going to 100 members of the house of representatives said that they wanted to
11:41 pm
challenge the results in 3 to 6 states that it was just supposed to take a long time but in the end and they would come out and say ok that biden is the next president of the united states then when we were in that building the police rushed in and said they're paranoid out there's a suspicious package get down into the basement and for people who haven't been to the u.s. capitol these lawmakers don't have to come out those red doors and see the protesters they have tunnels throughout this entire conflict forget all the office buildings so likely police would have secured the building then we came out here. we saw all of the protesters from will who had been there to see donald trump talk they started to march on the capital flip used tear gas plant bangs on that side of the capitol then they came over here one of the protesters told the others come on it's an ethical and a remarkable scene they actually breached a line of police officers at the capitol and they're still here we've seen. police and riot gear. response teams we've seen the national guard we've seen police the
11:42 pm
fire spirit with the building is absolutely remarkable i think a lot of people are going to ask why aren't the police doing anything we know there's a curfew that went out at 6 o'clock tonight so just a little while from now and an alert went out on everyone's phone so we have seen some term protesters start to leave but if you think about it this is still the situation an active scene inside the u.s. capitol and these hundreds of thousands of people basically just have taken over the outside of the building i think this to be a lot of question about what the police are doing to try to respond to this kind of provocative per a provocation i think other people have mentioned that when we saw those protests over the summer the black lives matter protest police report did not hesitate to use force on those protesters many times they were peaceful i can i think a lot of comparison really made between what would happen if they tried to breach the capitol was opposed to what's happening now where people are just being able to
11:43 pm
walk around now we did see one woman look like a woman who was as it was rushed into an ambulance a lot of the reporters were cheering her on that could be what we saw was reporters there so here in the crowd saying she had she reached the capitol and was shot in the chest so we're going to be following up on that but i think there's going to be a lot of questions about why they're letting this happen why they haven't taken control of the capitol grab them to step out of the way and to take a moment to appreciate this in insane. this is this is just i'm sorry but this is crazy we have a huge police presence we have thousands of people the u.s. capitol looks like it's under siege but yet we haven't seen the police do anything to necessarily and clear this space and patty let me just bring in some some good news that we're getting in on that note and we hearing from the white house spokesperson that the national guard is on its way to the capitol and as well as
11:44 pm
more support so we are hearing that and also patty remind us that that is of course the location where the inauguration of joe biden who will go from president elect to president is due to take place in about 2 weeks from now. exactly sorry i had to put my mask on because we've got a lot of the tribe supporters and none of them are wearing masks at all. yes the doggerel stand is being built it's on the other side of the capitol because we were in the middle of a pandemic the vice president president elect had thought it was going to be very very much a lot of it was going to be virtual but yes i do think about the symbolism of that in just 2 weeks time and the next president is going to take the oath of office he is going to be the next president these people might think it was stolen it wasn't and i think will you're seeing now is republicans are going to have to recalculate they've said in the past that it's just words just take the president literally
11:45 pm
seriously not literally this is the president's words brought into action we've seen his supporters take over the united states capitol so the question is going to be this is core base support this these are people who he's appeal to say he's the law and order president there is nothing in law and order about this and the response that we've seen so i think this is going to change a lot of things in people's minds and does this cost the president his political to . capital. he was daring them he said follow me or i'm sure you'll lose your job does he lose his power after this that's going to be so it will remain to be seen but really the bigger question is how did this happen they knew that these people were coming they knew that they were fired up they knew that they thought this was their their last stand and yet we didn't see the police presence like we've seen. them like we started with what as a matter of movement they were allowed to breach capital to make all of the
11:46 pm
lawmakers basically flee and there'll be a lot of questions about how this happened so right now it doesn't feel like the police are gearing up to do anything we're not seeing any sort of mobilization we see them here reports are that the national guard is on its way. they are outnumbered but they're not. have mobilized some but enough to make these people disperse and they're not necessarily trying to we haven't seen any police go up to those steps and say ok you have to go that. i think given me a lot of questions about the political fallout of this and also the actual fallout for this how did people get into the united states capitol is the president responsible with his words and think that is the question that will be asked certainly in the coming hours and days if not longer let's just bring some of the breaking news lines that we've been getting away here from the white house
11:47 pm
spokeswoman at the national guard is being the point of the u.s. capitol along with other federal protective services now in the past hour or so we have also tweets from president asking his supporters to respect the police we've had some pretty strong words i would say stronger words from the u.s. vice president mike pence he says protesters involved with violence of the u.s. capitol will be prosecuted to the fullest. and to all of the law back coming in from the u.s. vice president mike pence he calls for violent protests to stop now saying anyone involved should immediately. a good building some other news lines that have emerged in the past half hour or so we are hearing from one of the american news networks that one person was shot inside u.s. capital by law enforcement officer that's coming in from the reuters news agency
11:48 pm
and we also don't know or it's not clear if this is the same person that we heard about earlier one woman who had been shot at the u.s. capitol and is reportedly in a critical condition that seemed to have happened a little while ago not sure if this lace latest line refers to that to the viewers joining us now let me just remind you seen pictures of thousands of protesters of trump's supporters gathered outside capitol hill and we know of what we've seen various pictures but my guess is dozens potentially hundreds of people have actually managed to get inside the building and we have seen pictures of the protesters inside which i'm hopefully we're going to show you again now but these are still images that we have seen of guns being drawn inside the chamber so that is inside the u.s. chamber we know that protesters had managed to get in we've heard of
11:49 pm
a standoff at the door and now we are seeing pictures of guns being drawn inside the chamber. let's go now to she had who's live for us at the white house a lot of reaction coming in now strong words i thought coming in from the vice president. i guess a lot of the republicans who are good by trump probably did so because of pragmatism thinking that it would save their seats in future elections or they would incur the anger of crum supporters do you think that this is a tipping point for donald trump and the many republican politicians who still support him. it's very difficult to say and i would say that looking at mike pence tweet by the way once again but look what he's look what he's focusing on the violence and destruction taking place at the u.s. capitol must stop it must stop now anyone involved must respect the law enforcement
11:50 pm
officers and immediately of the building so this is all about property damage and the police it's not actually about a mall but right wing pro trump protesters disrupting the democratic process in the united states as the certification was underway to confirm that joe biden was the next president of united states that seems to somehow be a lie given all these tweets we're getting from republicans and those who who who all close to trump in the case of the family members with mike pence increasingly we could probably say well once close to trump a lot of what trump's focus has been on today and at the speech at the ellipse a few hours ago on his tweets was mike pence can stop this and when we get the impression we're now getting it maggie haberman of new york times always has rather an insider information beyond anyone really in some ways you know the trump whisperer she says basically just before trump got on stage at the on the ellipse at the ellipse for his for his speech he was in for mike pence phoned him and said
11:51 pm
i am not going to do what you're asking me to do i'm going to stick to the constitution and i'm going to certify the results as they come in if they also defy bill which they all clearly and trump was very angry about this he was fuming he went on stage he gave his speech he consulted his his his his supporters to the capital which he was going to do anyway and so even suggested that he was going to join them which he didn't do and then went back to his office in the oval office where he has right now and continued to fume and refused to to have to denounce the protests that were underway in the capital until often are also 45 minutes or so in the when we saw the getting the tweets where he was suggesting the people should respect the police and they rather anemic anemic tweets given the gravity of what we were witnessing on capitol hill so once again the even mike pence there again it's all about well we shouldn't you know respect the police and so on meanwhile that there has been one other development and again we're trying to figure out this
11:52 pm
like this whether. whether that the pentagon and the trumpet ministration as a result refuse the request from local authorities here in d.c. to deploy the national guard as you say now we understand the national guard is on the move but it's interesting the dia de the pentagon issued a statement denying that they had denied madhouses requests for the actual god but then shortly afterwards the d.c. council just released this statement which says today the department of defense denied a request by mammy role browser to expound the responsibilities of the d.c. national guard so they would be authorized to protect and restore order the capitol building request was denied who do you believe that the all the local city council there was something have 2 conflicting stories here about whether the administration was prepared to use the national guard who they use or liberally on black lives not to protest as. so the world has in the summer time their own supporters ministration who are actively breaking in and smashing windows and
11:53 pm
apparently have guns rule in congress. and let's let me bring you some more breaking news she have so we're hearing that the representative hakim jeffries chairman of house democratic caucus saying that the house intends to return and continue the search occasion of election on wednesday which of course was the reason why they were all gathered in the 1st place to certify the votes of the election and confirm joe biden as the president elect and another 'd tweet another . reaction that i think is very interesting considering what we were talking about a little bit earlier about how the rest of the world dials or i guess maybe used to look at the united states as the beacon of democracy well this is the reaction from the nato secretary general yens stoutenburgh he calls the protests in washington d.c. shocking and says the outcome of the election must be respected this is from the
11:54 pm
secretary general of nato the north atlantic treaty organization obviously the alliance of the western powers led by the u.s. as we know so an interesting tweet there saying that he is shocked at the images and the protests are coming out of washington d.c. going back to that news about potentially the session resuming what are you hearing about that event and does that sound right. you heard me the other. you see why you say that one of the reasons why. feels it's able to bombard countries with u.n. security council resolution is is because they're the ones you always claim to be up all democracies i guess with the most powerful nation with is having such an overt challenge to its own democracy it makes it more do. well to make that argument well international laws are being trampled upon i suppose you could say but what i'm not hearing much more about. about the session. do you for
11:55 pm
a 2nd bob or do they say they were turning on wednesday night is today. ok so let me just recap some of the news that we are getting out of the capital is she have you know obviously we're getting many reports from inside and it does seem especially from some of the images that we have seen that guns have been drawn inside the chamber how unprecedented how unexpected how shocking is that. it's an old usual thing i guess i think people who live in in washington if you even try and get on the steps to take a photograph you are almost tackled to the crowd by by capitol police i think everyone is just completely shocked at how this is allowed to get completely out of control in an area in which supposedly is enormously secure and so they want to
11:56 pm
always assume that there were more than the few capitol police deployed in the area in one of the alms the legislative alm of the u.s. democratic system that there was more than just a few capitol police who were policing that all this time especially given the enormous amount of money given to policing to militarize the police in washington and around and around the country and it's quite astonishing frankly that that this was allowed to get out of hand so quickly and so easily not least because everyone knew what was being planned about right wing groups were planning to go wild around the capitol during the election certification process in fact it was don't trump himself who said in fact let me you can read out a bit of the speech. that he gave here at the ellipse which was particularly specific about we're going to walk down to the capitol and we're going to cheer on our congress men and women and we're probably not going to be cheering so much for
11:57 pm
some of them because you'll never take back a country with weakness you have to show strength and actually throughout that speech he kept on saying that one had to challenge not a weak republican he said get rid of the weak republicans that was the phrase that he used referring to the republicans who were standing behind him in challenging the electoral certification process this was about challenge which is fair i mean again that's a 1st amendment right you're allowed to demonstrate you're not a challenge you're allowed to suggest that the election was on fact obviously i was told trump says and he's right after the last election the democrat. so out in the streets it all through because of various conspiracy theories they had about russian collusion which turned out not to be true they did try and disenfranchising just the legitimate the trump voters and donald trump but they did so through peaceful demonstration and the mother inquiry which which from from many of their allegations to be untrue similarly we're seeing this this process happen now it
11:58 pm
seems perhaps perhaps sort of in fact when president obama was voted in and donald trump tried to deliberately make president obama's victory by saying he was an evil american president trump wins the democrats say well clearly it wasn't our fault clinton's campaign refused to accept responsibility as a booklet it was the russians who do this in front of the russians today and now we have this which is were clearly. child was in dominion voting machines and all of these republican. electoral boards are all in cahoots and they're trying to cheat donald trump from the election it's a very interesting turn of events here for this american democracy this is trying city on a hill. she had prepared see with the latest analysis there from the white house she had thank you. just to remind the viewers of overseeing thousands of people gathered outside
11:59 pm
the i capitol hill. right now to the entrance of capitol hill about 2 hours ago and managed to get in we have seen pictures of from inside the building over the past hour or so and of course the calling the session that congress had under way was a joint session to certify the presidential election result to certify that joe biden is the u.s. president we are hearing that that session may resume sometime on wednesday we are also hearing that there's going to be a curfew from $23.00 g.m.t. in. washington d.c. so just to recap we've been witnessing extraordinary scenes live in washington d.c. supporters of president trump have stormed the u.s. capitol sending the building into lockdown now we've seen protesters clashing with police forcing their way into the building forcing the suspension suspension of the
12:00 am
joint session of congress to certify the presidential election results in skirmishes between police and protesters inside and of course just a few hours before the president himself had that dress the thousands of people gathered there saying that the election had been stolen. stay with us here are now just 0 for more on this developing story with our correspondents live in washington d.c. and my colleague. in doha barbara thank you very much indeed it is 2100 hours g.m.t. 4 pm in washington d.c. and some unprecedented scenes in the capital of the united states this is when you see where supporters of u.s. president donald trump have stormed the capitol building on the day the u.s. congress was to.
