who was supposed to be giving a speech on the economy well had to change its plans of course send and. called on president supporters to end the standoff to end their. calling what is happening today in washington insurrection so right now this is the scene it's looking much calmer than it did a few hours ago but certainly an unprecedented day in american history when supporters of us present donald trump storm to the capitol building. i'm fully back watching al-jazeera live from doha with continuing coverage of our breaking news from washington d.c. where it is 6 pm local time 2300 hours g.m.t. a curfew as i've been saying has chests come into effects after

a day of chaos on capitol hill the national guard the f.b.i. and other branches of u.s. police have moved supporters of president donald trump away from the capitol building these were pictures from earlier when tear gas clarified the protesters forced their way into the building prompting the evacuation of politicians who had gathered inside the capitol building to certify joe biden's election victory shots were fired inside the building and one woman we understand who was injured has now died and several police officers have also been injured d.c. police chief saying that the protesters president trump supporters were intent on harming offices well in response to all of this so the chaos donald trump released a video message on twitter calling for calm and telling his supporters to go home while at the same time repeating unfounded claims of election fraud u.s.

president elect joe biden spoke from delaware his home states and called this an assault on democracy let's listen 1st to what president trying to say i know your pain i know you're hurt we had an election that was stolen from us it was a landslide election and everyone knows it especially the other side but you have to go home now we have to have peace we have to have law and order we have to respect our great people in law and order we don't want anybody hurt it's a very tough period of time there's never been a time like this where. such a thing happened where they could take it away from all of us from me from you from our country this was a fraudulent election but we can't play into the hands of these people we have to have peace so go home we love you you're very special you've seen

what happens you see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil i know how you feel but go home and go home and peace at this hour our democracy is under unprecedented assault unlike anything we've seen in modern times. in assault on the citadel of liberty the capital itself an assault on the people's representatives in the capitol hill police sworn to protect them in the public servants who work at the heart of our republic and assault on the rule of law like few times we've ever seen an assault on most sacred of

america not undertakings the doing of the people's business the may be very clear the scenes of chaos in the capital do not reflect the true america do not represent who we are. i curfew for the district of columbia beginning at 6 pm this evening going until 6 am tomorrow morning during a curfew no one is allowed to be outside in public places other than essential workers which includes credentialed media engaging in and sensual functions as you can see from video images the unlawful behavior inside the united states capitol building i continue to urge our washingtonians to stay home and stay calm and if you see something say something but above all stay

home. that was a d.c. man nailed brows and speaking a curfew now in effect in washington d.c. we have 3 correspondents covering this story from various locations christensen only is in wilmington delaware where president elect joe biden spoke from just a few hours ago as all this unfolded. is that the white house and 1st again to his own bill was outside the capitol hill gate tell us about the situation right now. well the curfew just went into effect in the metropolitan police d.c. police are scanning cars breading out throughout the area telling any last stragglers that are here that they need to go home or they will be arrested for the most part call has been restored to the u.s. capitol and i can tell you this is why primarily because just in the last few minutes or so several bus loads of national guard troops have been brought here to

help secure the capitol presumably overnight we're not quite sure where they were earlier in the evening but they just arrived and now we also have the metropolitan police watch that are here on the capitol grounds as well these are much much different scene than what we saw for the last several hours and what really the world saw here for the last several hours when it was incredibly tense situations when even members of the media journalists ourselves briefly came under attack by some of the trump supporters. earlier this this evening so i mean this is been really clearly without to use an overused word unprecedented scenes that we've seen here at the capitol but right now i can tell you peace has been restored here there were a couple 1000 trump supporters who were here about an hour and half an hour ago they have mostly left presumably spread out in the different parts of washington d.c. right now but i can say the capitol at this hour appears to be back completely

under the control of security personnel. yes that's what no enforcement is saying that the capitol building is secure and house and senate leaders apparently want to get the certification of joe biden's election victory done tonight let's speak to stacey plaskett who's a u.s. democratic member of congress representing the u.s. virgin islands she's served as a former senior counsel with the justice department and is now joining us from nia capitol hill congressman tell us for is out you know what happened earlier today law enforcement now saying that the building is secured and the situation is under control. do you get a sense of that from where you are. thank you so much for having me i am in a secure location we have been told by heart in the farm that the capitol police

the news that he wanted he went to the demonstration he made a speech wait pretended that that never that conversation never happened he went on the stage and carried on saying my parents do it you can do it if you don't do it i'll be very disappointed in you meanwhile. the proceedings began on capitol hill and the 1st objection was raised to arizona and around that time demonstrators began trying to breach the barricades on capitol hill meanwhile the demonstrators from here exalted by donald trump approach he went to capitol hill as well. and we had we had the chaos that ensued meanwhile donald trump who during the course of that speech had suggested he too would join the demonstrators that capitol hill didn't go to capitol hill he retreated back to the white house and from multiple sources now we have a picture of a president who is fuming and angry at the vice president for not doing what he was told as the chaos ensues outside congress

refused the police from his advisors and those around him saying do something make some sort of statement try and call this off he kept on refusing until eventually quite late on he did give that video message where he said that he loved the protesters but it's time to go home and he repeated that sort of message just now in between what's interesting that this message was supposed to defuse the situation this video tweet almost immediately it was given a warning label by twitter which said this claim of election fraud is disputed and this tweet can't be replied to read tweeted and liked due to a risk of violence so the message that donald trump gave out there which is meant to go viral and be retreated wasn't able to be read to you because twitter decided it would contribute to violence and since then facebook and you tube have taken the video completely out of circulation because they're concerned it was inciting violence as well right message that donald trump gave after

a great many entreaties to try and defuse a situation has been removed for some subtle social media because of the fear that it would incite even more violence and the overall message she have that the president is giving the video message a twitter message now saying you know remember to his supporters remember this day forever go home with that in peace where is he going with all of this i mean what is he intention now with 2 weeks until biden's inauguration. i mean. certainly all the reporting that we've seen and from all the all the concurrent leaks that we've seen from those around them. the main goal it's true everyone's i'm some close to him of him saying he does seriously sometimes believe what he says and thinks well maybe i can pull this i maybe mike pence will do something not certify the election but most of the time this is about not having made up his mind of how to how to use the leverage that he clearly has amongst

a large section of the republican base and this is about keeping keeping things bubbling over while he makes a decision on what to do and to show that the republicans need to be scared of him and certainly what was it over 100 republican members of the house 1213 so that is only said they were prepared to to to to delay the certification off the election at the very least they give these very high faluting reasons but we all know the main reason is they're worried about their own political future and what the raw sort of raw 3 saw being unleashed on congress today would mean for their own political futures in the coming years she had we i get the impression and correct me if i'm wrong that donald trump seems to be alone now in all all of this i mean just reading this tweet here on this line that the new york times is reporting that it was actually the vice president mike pence who ordered the d.c.

national god to be deployed and not donald trump himself it would seem that everyone who's around him is leaving giving up on a man and he's in oh he's on his own own in this last battle that he's he's waging but he's not alone and that's the point and that's the power that you have a 73000000 americans voted for him and a large balance between something that a coincidence believe it or the other getting right. which then relates to how politically he is not alone because we have these senators and members of the house and others whose who are not deserving as yet we understand a great deal of pressure is being put on them by the republican leadership to remove their objections the national goal of the issue is very interesting though why was it the vice president who gave the order apparently finally after we had actually the city council putting out a statement that they had requested the mayor had requested the national guard be

deployed and rather than we don't want all the state in d.c. we have no real power over over the national guard or the power of the governors of states usually have the man is pretty powerless has to go to the federal government and initiate the d.o.d. refused her request according to the city council but the idea you have now denied that we don't know the truth. that's if that issue about who why mike pence called out the national guard maybe more complex than we think could might simply be that donald trump even though he was he was very keen at the drop of a hat basically to call out the national guard on the peaceful protesters who were protesting against the killing of black people by police officers for all summer the national guard on the streets pretty quickly as well as all sorts of weird uniformed paramilitary units and they were very quick to put down even the slightest bit of peaceful protest with pepper spray. when it came to his own supporters clearly he wasn't prepared to do that or that would be the input all these that didn't come up perhaps because it was mike pence in the end who gave the

order you say she had that politically no one's deserted him yet and you're right in saying that there sell these senators you know who are trying to object to the set of occasion of binding. but i wonder what do they gain what do they stand to gain from still backing donald trump but this made stage very late stage of his presidency. well they don't know how much power he'll wield in the future so. we don't know what they'll gain from continue to back him we know they'll lose by deserted him they'll lose a big percentage of 73000000 people so if you're doing a cost benefit analysis i suppose that seems seems a bit easier to to to to sort out and to to deal with and even when you look at the tweets from republicans who have been in the trunk and who even vaguely say oh well this is all acceptable what they're saying is not acceptable in their tweets isn't that a group of trump supporters attacked congress while the certification of the next

president united states was on the way what they say if you look carefully at their tweets it's always you shouldn't attack the capitol police or you shouldn't damage buildings and that's not acceptable we shouldn't the police are all friends blue lives matter that's what they're tweeting about they're not saying one of the. legislative almost the u.s. government was undertaking its constitutional duty in the off the month of the election to satisfy the election and a mob attacked attacks progress. you know one person has now died as a result that wasn't done so without reading about they're saying well the police you know that we should always stand up for the police it's a very nuanced message they don't know what they're going to gain by sticking with trump but they know what they're going to lose one of the g.o.p. now is apparently trying to persuade these trump loyalists to abandon their challenge to biden's when can they can it.

to officials in washington d.c. masses of angry protesters stormed the building earlier today as politicians were about to certify the election victory of joe biden they were debating anyway. let's bring in mabel bures in a professor of sociology at university thank you for sticking with us and sing with us for your patients miss barry's in when we spoke earlier you mentioned the word ensued which is a strong word i mean this is what we heard in history books we learned in history books when we learned about the u.s. civil war and so on and we're talking 2021 now and ensued in the united states is it not too strong of a word to use for this situation. well it's exactly what. it's

exactly what's going on here i mean you know basically you have an armed man who basically stormed the capitol in the middle of a constitutional process certifying the next the you know the election of the president of the united states insurrections a relatively mild word compared to the word coup that a lot of people have been trying to use. but in any rate there is call it what you we're all of our a lot of people did storm the u.s. capitol got into the capitol and started to try to affect a democratic process. and that is something to be concerned about are and it looks like it's i've been listening to all your courage and following the coverage all day and it is a shocking event and i have no doubt in the end you know by now is going to be president but it should be one of those sort of you know written warning lights or

every want to call it that we should take very seriously and we'll see if that actually. there are republicans who are have suddenly looked very i would think would be presented to and i've been watching on t.v. including mitch mcconnell looks you have that sort of look of you know what did i unleash here so we'll see how it develops but i have no doubt that. it appears to be stopped for the moment well a lot of republicans coming out to denounce what happened today including former republican president george w. bush saying he's appalled by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election it's a statement that he issued a short while ago former republican president george w. bush but ultimately barry's in there a lot of people who will say that. the republican party is responsible for what

we're seeing today that they allowed this to happen that they created this monster if you will would you agree with that. well let's put it this way i think what the republican party got on board the truck through the truck train for various reasons are i think that obviously mitch mcconnell and many others thought that they could sort of discipline try and use him to to get the kind of legislation that they wanted. are and i think they were wildly underestimated a certain feature of trans person out there is that at this mind in that you're really if you were even a sort of competent authoritarian or somebody who wanted to sort of rule with an iron fist he had enough oh wonderful opportunity taken advantage of the you know he actually managed to coded praises in you know you know happy responsible way he

right on but i do think that but it when i think i am expecting his bears in from your perspective as a sociologist i'm interested too to understand how and why so many people in america today i mean we've seen his supporters in washington d.c. today but many american some 7xw7x4w i believe voted for donald trump what is it that of tracks them to this man. that is vastly over i mean that number is real but what is that i think over estimated in that that 74 and number is there is an assumption that they all did it for the same reason and i would guess that at least half of them did it for pragmatic reasons it you and i or you know that are now on or you know that are usually not that glamorous to talk about but you know simply economic reasons you have a small business you act attacks strokes and setter and you don't really care about

a lot of the issues are you don't care about the future of democracy you care about a lot of the the issues that a lot of people like myself like to talk about and think about and write about so you know and then i'm sure there are certain other number of people that are sort of hard core you know craze trumps that for years and you know they are only for that without reason but i don't think that 7 for me you know is just the wrong action number to toss around and of social scientists i know that we need to know more about 74000000 people i do not believe and it does this no prayer historical you know evidence of things like this happen in this way everybody who you know was in new who stormed the white house today or are the people who didn't storm but who actually showed up i mean i don't think you can assume that everybody who voted for. for donald trump our media is basically on the same page with all

those people even if they think they're not honest. but all this solace to day is that america is clearly a very divided country and that there's a lot of healing that's going to be needing to be done in the coming years what is it going to take do you think to to you reunite the country and not just the everyone is not going to agree politically but it seems to be deeper than that well that's a very big question to ask our. interview of this sort because you know the short answer you're going to need a certain certain sense of people are living in the united states and in europe because actually i'm a political historian and basically they are living in this moment in this in of many people are with syria and have in a state of insecurity which in some instances generates fears in other instances

generate other things and i think that we have to do things to restore a sense of place and security to people and you know the best way to do that is is basically with economic programs that ensure people have jobs and ways to live and things like that the healing will come afterwards i mean the healing i mean i think the sort of story of the healing it's a nice story but i mean i talk to a lot of different kinds of people just in my sort of daily life and i don't run into these people they're also crazed with anger and things like that i'm not saying that it's not fair and i've seen things that we would rather not see. it's pretty clear that we do need all to do a lot of work in this country to sort of make it a much more national i put it in a country in which more people can feel economically secure and if they feel like an arm of the security they will more likely be a feel.
