here is another instance is generally the other thing and i think that we have to do things to restore a sense of place and security to people and the best way to do that is basically with economic programs that ensure people have jobs and ways to live and things like that the human will come after are done in the healing i mean i think the sort of story of the healing it's a nice story but i mean i talked to a lot of different kinds of people just in my sort of daily life and i don't run into these people they're also crazed with anger and things like that i'm not saying that it's not fair and we're not seeing things that we were grown up and see . it's pretty clear that we do need all to do a lot of work in this country to sort of make it a truer there so i put it in a country in which more people can feel economically secure and if they feel like an arm of the security they will look more like the. feel a little bit better other things off base pairs and thank you so much and thank you
2:31 am
for sharing your perspective with us on all of this. if you're just joining us on al-jazeera it is 2330 g.m.t. 6 30 pm in washington d.c. where curfew is now any threat after a day of chaos on capitol hill the national guard the f.b.i. and other branches of the u.s. police have clear supporters of president donald trump from the capitol building a building which they occupied for a few hours today a woman who was shot inside the building we understand. has died this is according to d.c. police a woman was shot inside the capitol building after it was overrun by a mob of president supporters politicians were evacuated from the building they had gathered there to certify the election victory of jaw biden
2:32 am
the building was evacuated and politicians are now saying that they will continue their discussions and their debates to certify joe biden's election victory as i said shots were fired inside the building one woman who was injured has now died and several police officers were also injured according to the d.c. police chief who said that the protesters that president supporters were intent on harming the offices police we understand of also defuse several explosive devices around washington and have seize a number of weapons in response to all this chaos president released a video calling for calm and telling his supporters to go home while at the same time repeating unfounded election. fraud claims he's issued another tweet just in the last hour in essence saying that what happened today was to be
2:33 am
expected because the election had been stolen from him u.s. president elect joe biden meanwhile has called all of this an assault on democracy kristen salumi is at present elects joe biden's home state in delaware in delaware joining us now live. christine my god i mean we we can of course go back to what's happened today and talk about the chaos and so on in washington d.c. but i mean for the biden camp they perhaps were expecting something to happen but surely not at this scale what would have been the reaction say what what do they say. well i don't think they anticipated quite this reaction in the nation's capital the president elect
2:34 am
was scheduled to make remarks we were told they would have to do with the economy with that important runoff race for senate and control of the senate at stake in georgia we expected some reaction to that as well as to the ongoing certification process of the electoral college votes what we got instead 2 hours late was a reaction to the chaos that was unfolding in the streets of washington d.c. with the president elect calling the scene mayor assault on democracy he called the halls of congress where this was happening the citadel of democracy he talked about. the people who were doing it he said this isn't a protest this is an insurrection and those who are taking part in it he said were extremists in their actions he described as bordering on sedition so
2:35 am
it was a very short and to the point speech and he used it to call out president trump saying it was time for him to take a stand to go on television something he has not done yet and call for people to withdraw from the area at that point the president had only said that his supporters should remain peaceful tweeting as much it wasn't till late. or that he actually told them it was time to go home. so all of this on a day where joe biden probably should have been celebrating the official certification of his victory in the election the retaking of the senate by democrats something that he has said will be essential to move the country forward to move his agenda forward he's talked about the need for that control and for working with republicans to increase stimulus payments to americans
2:36 am
in the wake of the pandemic to try to address the economic concerns so many people have here as a result of that and to. essentially move his own agenda forward and say dad that all being overshadowed by the president and his continued attempts to try to undermine those election results and it's 14 days now christine until joe biden is someone in many would say that 14 days is a lot of time still for president 2 to perhaps cause even more harm than he's done . in the next 2 weeks. biden now as you said has you know narrow democratic majorities in congress in the senate as well it's good news but at the same time it could limit his his agenda couldn't it.
2:37 am
absolutely and nobody's talking about how to bring the country together and how to pass his stimulus package and people are talking about what's happening in the streets in fact after his remarks joe biden was asked is he afraid is he worried about his inauguration. nor and most of the other questions but he stopped to answer that one in and said that he wasn't concerned about his own security wasn't concerned about the inauguration that american people and had enough in american people would stand up he said enough is enough but will it be enough we are hearing that the senate will resume later tonight its efforts to certify the electoral votes that i think would be a sign that the institutions of democracy can't be stopped that the process will continue in the way it was intended by the founding fathers by the laws of the country by the constitution but clearly this has shaken many people's faith in
2:38 am
those institutions and it will be quite a healing process moving forward that the president elect will have to contend with when he takes office in just over a week. christine thank you very much for the moment christians know me in den away for that for us saying now we're as you can imagine a lot of reaction from around the world to what's happening in washington d.c. while leaders have been. making statements and tweeting about this british prime minister or is johnson describing these scenes as disgraceful and he added that the u.s. stands for democracy around the world and he's now. that is now vital that they should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power germany's foreign minister says his supporters must accept the decision of american voters at last and stop trampling on democracy while nato secretary general yen sultan described the scenes as shocking and said the outcome of the u.s. election must be respected with us once again is p.j.
2:39 am
crowley former deputy press secretary at the state department joining us p.j. crowley thank you very much for being with us and for staying with us i'm just looking at the reactions on twitter of you know world leaders and various. agencies around the world and it's quite striking isn't it that all these messages that the u.s. is usually the one to be sending out to so-called banana republic and so on is actually . it is a u.s. today receiving these messages what do you make of that eleazer anything that the rest of the world can do about this. well i think it it it just is a reflection of apprehension that world leaders have we've gone through a very divisive the last 40 years for example within the nato alliance for example 'd political unity is the essential element of nato you know donald trump has been
2:40 am
a very divisive figure you know within that alliance and you know we're looking forward to someone with a great deal of international experience in joe biden to kind of restoring common cause the united states and its close friends and allies around the war 'd and now we see that you will clearly inherit a house that's deeply divided what have just been much more political capital and energy trying to as you just been talking about you know trying to find ways to heal the political division in the country and that necessarily means they'll 'd be of less ability less capital available try to you know join forces with the wall 'd in solving many of the key challenges that we face. there are as many now outside of the us were calling it a failed democracy can it ever recover its reputation regain strength and sometimes i think i would resist that you know we just we have kind of
2:41 am
a split screen. here in the united states today you know just asked we saw the crowd. 'd you know challenge our 'd speech and when you see john kaldor you know we also have the announcement that. both of 'd raphael warnock and john also off have been successful in their bids 1st percentage steeds in yesterday's runoff in georgia and still in fact you should you know having a moment to celebrate you know that. you know despite the political being you know of presence out for other people in georgia spoke loud and clear and are standing to democrats you know to the capitol hill yes so yes you have an example of the resilience of american democracy that the party out of power and can take control of the senate at the same charge and you have an example of how fragile you know democrat demographic democratic institutions are and that's going to challenge said
2:42 am
joe biden faces in 2 weeks. you talked about you know world leaders hoping for some return to normalcy under the biden administration and we saw a number of them who were quick to congratulate biden on his election victory others were you know took their time i'm thinking here of the russians of course and the chinese will take some time to congratulate biden how will these countries and i'm talking about the countries that are perceived as so-called enemies of the u.s. you know the the the countries that are seen to be in competition with the u.s. china economically of course the russians and so on how will they be seeing this situation today and is is something that they could be taking advantage of. i certainly think they will try to take advantage of this you know their record nuances between those 2 you know russia is trying to actively undermine american
2:43 am
democracy and that's why. intervene as he did in the 2016 election and has been taking advantage ever since i think for the chinese you know they're more in a in a street competition you know she she will not hesitate to say that. that you know a chinese form of government a strong central government in a market economy is superior you know to the american more model 'd that is so just organized so i do think you hear particular you know is is probably. you know 'd taking some comfort in the future she sees today i mean just as 4 years ago as donald trump was you know saying that he didn't believe in. in multilateral trade agreements and usually paying for example when a dollar of us and said you know we are you know the strongest defenders of the existing you know trade system around the world you know it is using people take
2:44 am
note of what's happening here in washington and we'll try to take advantage of it to be sure p.j. crowley thank you once again for speaking to us we have to be speaking some more force throughout the night here this unrest in washington it's not just happening in the u.s. capitol they've been reports of smaller demonstrations outside state capitol buildings in the state of georgia in oregon as well and in colorado and georgia's governor bryant can say is that people have the right to protest but not to destroy property taken a city all summer long allowing people to let their voices be heard on an array of issues that we have going on in our state and in our country at that time. well we certainly did not allow an arche and we will not allow that now here in the state of georgia. it is unimaginable that because of that we have people in our state in
2:45 am
our country that have been threatening police officers breaking in to government buildings while i was georgia's governor there speaking about protesters in georgia trying to storm the state capitol building now this came as a result so of georgia senate runoff where announce and democrats have won the 2 senate races giving the democrats control of both houses of congress the victories for raphael warnock and john all soft mean that joe biden cannot pursue his agenda and challenge natasha go name has more now on those congressional races on the senate races in atlanta. georgia democrats are savoring this victory the most with reverend raphael warnock senior pastor at the ebenezer baptist church behind me he becomes georgia's 1st black senator and he becomes only the 11th black
2:46 am
senator in u.s. history with john off he was recently declared the official winner in his race at 33 he becomes the youngest member of the senate since 1073 he on the campaign trail he talked about how he was a jewish son of an immigrant he is also the c.e.o. of a documentary production company they got right to the point they said that they need that the incoming senate needs to rush economic relief to families who are struggling as a result of the pandemic and that the senate also needs to get to work to pass a more appropriate in their mind effective response to 19 so as you can see these men who are going to be hitting the ground running already looking ahead at the dual crises facing the united states meanwhile both of the republican of their republican opponents have not officially conceded they have
2:47 am
said however that they will exhaust every resource necessary to ensure that all this is a quote legal votes are counted in georgia it's worth noting that it appears that victory in georgia is large enough that a recount cannot be requested by his opponent david perdue. now democratic leader nancy pelosi we understand is trying to get congress senators back congress to get back into session so that they can continue the debate to certify joe biden's election victory which was interrupted earlier of course by the chaos on capitol hill when president tom supporters stormed the building as that debate was ongoing earlier i spoke to. a democratic congressman and he was inside the building when the events began he was escorted to a secure location again again with other members of congress when the protesters storm their way into the building here is what he had to say to us about that. from
2:48 am
the very beginning of the day we saw people gathering and unfortunately not enough security around but as the debate began on the process to that debate the results of the electoral college. trump protesters chose to interrupt the process and stormed the capitol building and so we're there here the process will continue this is a stay nation of laws with strong democratic institutions and we will proceed with the process and we will have a result and inauguration or on january 20 riot police have been deployed and the f.b.i. has been deployed in the capitol grounds and i am beginning to see the dispersement of the folks that were out there but there's still. plenty of them so i suspect
2:49 am
that he will be a while before they're completely dispersed and where we'll be able to proceed with our proceedings i think there's a greater resolve now more than ever to proceed with our constitutional duties i've asked lawmakers to abide by the rules established within the constitution of the united states and to protect. and protect and preserve our nation from all enemies foreign and domestic and many of the ones the showed up at the capitol today were enemies of our democracy we are supportive of up democracy we are supporters of dissent and protest but we don't support. violence we don't support vandalism we don't support assault or intimidation so we will proceed and will count those votes i don't think that the. dad
2:50 am
came here to date i reflection of the vast majority of the american people i think that there are small groups exposed rich group violent intolerant perhaps racist at their core that refuse to accept the reality that manifested itself last night in the state of georgia or last november across these united states let's all speak to jakarta who is the founder and c.e.o. of full circle strategies a political strategist city just firm joining us from washington thank you for being with us 1st off i you know everyone is shocked i imagine you are about what we saw today what do you think will be the consequences of what unfolded today on capitol hill well 1st of all i think it's clear what we're seeing happening in washington d.c. is a career and ultimate attack on our democracy as
2:51 am
a nation it is sad it is also it is a direct result of more and 4 years of pakistan and repeated stoking of violence and rhetoric by the current president of the united states donald trump and those who stood by him who wrapped him up and those who also stood silent and said nothing all responsible for just what we're seeing today. looking at social media right now there are a lot of people talking about the 25th amendment. which has of course been mentioned throughout president tom's presidency but today it seems that you know the fact that it was according to the washington post's mike pence. order the national guard to separate and not the president himself there are many who are saying that the vice president essentially today became the president the president
2:52 am
is not doing his job can can anything that can be done between now and january 20th on the inauguration of joe biden to remove president trump from office. well i think one would argue that this president has long before to day has really stepped away from the duties of being the president of all of the united states of america and i think there has been a constant example that example that example of what there is been lies and whether it's mistaken violence that is violated just the same to see what it is means to be the president of the united states we've already saw there been reports that congresswoman omar has already began the draft articles of impeachment and i think there's an argument that this president has you know lost touch with reality and what has happened today someone died today i think is important or some one died
2:53 am
today no matter what side of the protest this woman was on there was a death today people listen to the president of the united states rhetoric and violence march and they stormed on to the united states capitol while it was in session and that is not protest that is criminal behavior that is criminal behavior and it's important to know that when these folks came into this capitol it was a threat on our nation it was a threat not to our hersey and they need to be held responsible but someone died as a result of the constant rhetoric that this president in those that have stood by him and those that have said nothing that they have put in right now and it is quite quite important that that you say that and that you remind us that someone did indeed die today a woman who was injured when supporters a stall in the capitol building died of her injuries. for
2:54 am
a country like the united states has so much experience in dealing with protesters and with violence it took a long time for the security forces to intervene i mean we remember of course the summer when the black guys matter protests were happening in d.c. protesters were tear gassed you know there were removed very quickly and in a violent matter from you know the premises from near the white house and so on it took much longer today to do that how do you explain this. it is clear it is racism and racial disparities that continue to rear their ugly head in the united states of america i was having a conversation with the sister today and she asked the question and she knew the answer when she asked she said what would have happened had it been like protesters we know what would have backed that there would have been tear gas there would have
2:55 am
been riot police there would have been right there would be right. there would have probably been bullets in tear gas all of that we would have solved and we have seen older and over again all summer but as so on peaceful protesters who have been protesting against violence in this country what we see girls that will grow and already united states capitol stormed the capitol why the vice president of the united states and the speaker of the house is presiding over a joint session of congress enabled since the war in the manner that they get to have guns in the manner of thinking and to be able to walk out with it ask ourselves in america what's really going on here and answer if this is a problem in america i mean we're going to have to deal with that question right but i think we also have to think joe biden the president elect can be the one to deal with this question knowledges racism that you bring up can he be the one that
2:56 am
he these divisions and i think he is he's probably can. i think he absolutely and i believe strongly that president elect joe biden vice president elect comolli harris will be what it is that we need in this nation to unite and to heal this nation this nation has been torn apart by this nation has been put to the brakes by the current president of the united states and i am confident that president elect biden and vice president elect traveling hears will do everything in their power to unite in the leadership for all of america they will speak to all of america there is a lot of pain there is a lot of hurt in this country but also let's be very real there's a lot of racism and there's a lot of hate in this country too and we have to deal with all of. you mention come at
2:57 am
a high risk of course the 1st. female vice president but also an african-american . the message of course that needs to be send is one of unity. that the biden team there in the biden administration is going to have to send when it comes to racism and african-americans is there a sense that you know this new administration can be the one to to indeed address this issue in a successful manner. i certainly have hope that this administration will president elect calmly harris has the live experience unlike anyone else that is ever set in the position that she said she was the 1st woman she was the 1st african-american 1st woman of color 1st asian american woman to sit ins with this office and she had a lived experience she knows what it feels like to be racially profiled she knows
2:58 am
what it feels like they have bills courageous conversations with the young black man in your family she knows what it is to deal with all of this that i think she'll take that lived experience with her in the office i think also president elect joe biden he is someone that has great empathy is a great passion for these issues and we've already seen with a number of the appointments and some of the messaging in the policies that have been put out by this administration and this transition see that they are going to focus on racial justice i think it is imperative that they do i believe that there are many partners in this country that are ready and willing to stand with them in doing this because clearly what we saw today we saw to date with coordination of a year is a years of patronage of rhetoric that has been stolen from the highest office in the land and it's
2:59 am
a tragedy it's sad and it's embarrassing for us across the world to be viewed in this way but it is a sad reality that we are in in this moment in the united states and it is our hope and my personal goal that this this next the ministration will do the important work of healing this nation that has been torn by donald. thank you so much to kind of for for speaking to us about all this we appreciate your time and your insight thank you. thank you. all right is coming up 20100 hours g.m.t. 7 pm in washington d.c. where a curfew was imposed just an hour ago in response to a day of chaos on capitol hill that has left one woman dead politicians are hoping to resume certifying the election victory of joe biden after a day that forced them to evacuees when a launch group of followers surrounded and stormed the building as they were
3:00 am
beginning their debate to certify biden's election victory the national guard the f.b.i. and other branches of police moved in they moved the crowd away from the capitol building and they're now declaring that the area is secure meanwhile u.s. president elect joe biden has called what some folded today on capitol hill an assault on democracy at this hour our democracy is under unprecedented. unlike anything we see in modern times. the citadel of liberty capital so. in a song on the people's representatives in the capitol hill police sworn to protect . the public servants.
