the people all right the world people pay attention to walking on here now does it is very good at bringing the news to the world from here. the. chaos on the u.s. capitol donald trump supporters stormed the building and disrupt proceedings to certify joe biden's an election win and that debate in congress has resumed after it was suspended for hours and it's still going on. the whole romney watching al-jazeera live my headquarters here in doha also coming up twitter and facebook suspend president donald trump's accounts accusing his post of inflaming violence. also democrats win control of the u.s.
10:01 am
senate after 2 victories and runoff elections in the state of georgia they now control both houses of congress. welcome to the program we start with an unprecedented night of violence on capitol hill where a crowd stormed congress interrupting proceedings to certify joe biden's presidential when donald trump supporters forced their way into the congress building shortly after the president called on people to march the vice president mike pence who was overseeing the joint session condemned the violence violence never wins freedom wins this is still the people's house as we reconvene in this chamber world will again witness the resilience
10:02 am
and strength of our democracy. for even in the wake of unprecedented violence and vandalism at this capital the elected representatives of the people of the united states have assembled again on the very same day to support and defend the constitution of the united states at least one person was shot and killed 3 others died when several officers were injured police also defused several explosive devices around the building trump has been accused of inciting violence and members of the judiciary committee now want vice president pens to invoke the 25th amendment the unprecedented move would deem trump unfit to carry out his judi's or remove him from office while the set of cation debate for pennsylvania is still going on right now as you can see live pictures from the house of representatives on capitol hill and heidi castro is in washington d.c.
10:03 am
both speaking to her in just a few minutes about the certification but 1st particle hain begins our coverage with this report on the occupation of congress. the u.s. capitol building under siege. thousands of president donald trump's followers surrounded the building and burst in the result a remarkable scene of lawmakers and the police seemingly overwhelmed social media filled with pictures of trump's followers and offices in the chambers running free in what is supposed to be one of the most protected buildings in the country it started as u.s. president donald trump called his supporters to protest what he falsely claimed was a stolen election rally them up with inflammatory words and misinformation are we going to walk down to the capitol. and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. as
10:04 am
a joint session of congress met to certify the election the president's followers heated his words and descended on the capitol chaos followed. tear gas and flash bangs to try and push them back from the front of the capitol others moved to the back quickly pushing through a line of police many entering the building congress was dismissed and its members blood at one point reports of an armed standoff at least one protester was shot and killed several officers injured the incoming president responded this is not to sent it's just shorter it's chaos it borders on sedition and it must and now i call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward he demanded the president tell his supporters to go home and trump dead but continued to repeat his lies i know
10:05 am
your pain i know you're hurt we had an election that was stolen from us it was a landslide election and everyone knows it as night fell in the u.s. capitol the national guard the police they tried to regain control of the building in the morning it will bring fresh questions about exactly how this happened and whether they'll be any repercussions for the people whose words led to this unbelievable action. al-jazeera at the u.s. capitol. cable is on this on this update from outside the u.s. capitol building up to the curfew came into effect. outside the capitol order has been restored the security perimeter has been put back up and we basically have a lot of metropolitan police as well as capitol police basically just keeping the area sic here we've heard of a few instances of some skirmishes in other parts of washington d.c.
10:06 am
city proper between some protesters slash rioters with police but that's been fairly sporadic. about 6 pm here local time is when the curfew went into effect and that is when for the most part the security personnel here outside the capital started to push everyone away from here and outside the capitol grounds and order has been restored after what was an absolutely to mulch day here as we all know now just absolutely remarkable and there's going to be a lot of questions asked in the coming hours and days in america about how this was allowed to happen a massive security breach here at the capitol. facebook and twitter have taken the unprecedented step of suspending the president's ability to post following the violence in washington you cheap is also remove the video in which trump protest is
10:07 am
to go home while repeating unfounded allegations about election for old twitter account has been blocked for at least 12 hours while his facebook account is frozen for an entire day let's get the very latest joining me now from washington d.c. been monitoring events through the evening and into the early morning. pennsylvania republicans objected ready to the vote leading to more debates before the vice president could announce as we expect to have won the presidential election so where are we now in terms of the timeline of the debates. why well this could have been an even longer night so hail have republicans followed through with their original plan which was to object to more than just these 2 states but then due in part to the violence that ensued there were several republican senators who pulled back those objections and without their partnership
10:08 am
with the house republicans i wanted to still carry forth those objections the only states that remain on the table were arizona and pennsylvania for arizona earlier in the evening that was resoundingly defeated the objections there those votes certified as going to joe biden for president and now we're seeing the last minutes likely of the debate in the house for pennsylvania and we're seeing really a rehashing from these republican representatives who are objecting calling about what they believe are the election in securities notable notably they're not bringing up evidence of election fraud that president trumped without. his baseless argument that he won the election that it was stolen from him by biden supporters and it's also notable that these same the same issues have already been litigated across the country in more than 60 lawsuits all of which were rejected or tossed
10:09 am
out against the president's argument so for the rest of this evening we expect the house to be voting on this objection to pennsylvania that it's a pretty drawn out process but eventually perhaps before the dawn of day the final vote count will take place in which joe biden will be officially certified as the president elect the violence that we saw heidi. turn the tide in the opinion of many republicans who hold seats either in senate or in the house by those that do and do not support the president in terms of mitt romney and lindsey graham. that's that's right it's particularly in the senate more chastened attitude if you compare the tone of these speeches from prior to the riot
10:10 am
and after another prime example would be senator loftier who just lost her re-election bid in georgia she said explicitly that she had intended that morning to voice more objections to these states but because of the violence that happened in her good conscience could not move forward then so she withdrew those objections but also from the president's closest allies we saw mitch mcconnell reconvening this session of the senate saying that this was a failed insurrection using strong words to denounce the violence that we saw and we saw another close trying to ally lindsey graham saying in a sense that he stood with trump for all these years but he said he's had enough and he went further and said this job traveled the world would you hope the law of parading you would lose he would he's the legitimate president of the united states
10:11 am
cannot convince people certain groups by my words but i will tell you by actions that maybe i am above all others in this body need to say this joe biden come alone or lawfully elected and will become the president and the bars president. on january 20th. and i should emphasize that this is such a departure from how this proceeding normally unfolds so it's usually very boring in fact some members don't even show up they send their staffers it happens like within an hour because it's just a formality to put the rubber stamp on what the american people in the electoral college has already decided in choosing the next president so for this year to be such a departure 1st in this attempt by some republicans to question the result and then
10:12 am
of course this violence that erupted with the mob storming the capitol well it also infuses these senators and congress men and women and their speeches are now infused with more meaning knowing that the world is watching and that state is their defense of american democracy and that lawlessness cannot prevail. we'll continue to monitor events forced thanks very much for the update from washington d.c. let's join peter mathews he's a professor of political science at cypress college joins me live from los angeles in california good to have you on the program mr matthew as always. heidi just said you know a major departure of proceedings perhaps is an understatement for what we've witnessed in the last sort of 12 hours but while the debate continues in the house over objections to the pennsylvania vote can we safely say that sort of where we're at the end of the sort of procedure and the inevitable confirmation of biden as the $46.00 president it will happen be later than planned. i think so i think it will
10:13 am
definitely happen i think this the horrendous uprising that was actually an insurrection of these violent protesters trump supporters has hasten the end of the deliberate process and it should be very soon before we will know that will be official count of 306 electoral votes for biden and 232 i believe for truck and by will be the next president will be announced officially very slow with less a sort of 2 weeks to go before the inauguration what should we make of the role of the covered president president trump the democrats want him removed after wednesday i mean trump inspired violence as far as many are concerned and those democrats some of them for the house judiciary committee what the 25th amendment invoked to remove him is that a possibility. it certainly is a possibility and it's becoming increasingly so at this time it was talked about actually several months ago even a year ago but now it's been so apparent that the president has been involved in
10:14 am
this incitement of violence by his followers he spoke to them today at noon and they took the streets at the capital after night and broke down the glass and took over the senate floor it was a horrible thing and that image acted forcefully and this is very dangerous and the president was highly responsible for it and that itself is a grounds enough to be able to remove him and the vice president would have to actually propose into the cabinet and then they'll be a vote in the cabinet if the majority the cabinet the vice president go to remove or to say that he's incapacitated that he cannot discharge as it is properly then he will have to go unless he objects if you object then 2 thirds of each house has to vote to go ahead and to reject it or reject to reject is that is that his opposition to it and he will be the power we transfer the vice president to magically that's quite a task that i think it could happen because now the country's been shaken up and so many of the elites in the country to see that this was a terribly disable izing event today what do you make of the comments by the vice president after the mob violence that this sort of these sorts of actions could not
10:15 am
be tolerated in a democracy such as america and then comments by lindsey graham one of his store just allies these past 4 years. those 2 men's comments show the turning of the tide in a tremendously antitrust direction and so i think they're very significant and in fact not something else happened today and that was it looks like the national guard that was sort of courtney to the d.c. national guard it was due to the actions of vice president pence not president trump president trump hesitate in the national guard in there to inject those illegal protesters took over the insurrection people and he refused to do it basically and i think in and mr pence that it was present ben to take over that responsibly so who is really in charge who's got who is the locus of power right now it's a very important question looks like lies vice president present creasing to become the person that people are looking up to full genesee as a legitimate leader right now if you're an american in los angeles all. or in fort lauderdale in florida you will be all tend to hope surely for the next 2 weeks
10:16 am
wondering what on earth is going on with our country and what next absolutely so and i certainly am an american all right here in los angeles i've been here for many many years and i feel exactly what you just the question you pose and we're all feeling that right now because we have 2 weeks left and this man the president of the united states mr trump is in charge of the nuclear arsenal he's in charge of the management the armed forces 247 he could do a lot of damage if we if he's completely off in terms of his balance and i think he seems to be with what happened today so we all hope that there's some way that the transfer of power can be peaceful but these 214 days don't erupt in something that would be irreversible and we do hope that the people who have the power to actually change this to possibly require a transition of power earlier the vice president the cabinet would actually do that with the 25th amendment or i mean impeachment would be a longer process that could also work to remove him but he has to be looked at very carefully very quickly as to whether i could be
10:17 am
a real danger of this country that's 14 days i'm afraid that could be the case delicate time said peter matthys joining us from los angeles times thank you. well the situation was unfolding in washington d.c. the results of georgia's senate runoff were announced democrats and now really won the 2 senate races giving the party control of the u.s. senate the house of representatives on the presidency natasha going to reports now from atlanta. the seismic shift for the democrats in georgia reverberated and was celebrated across the united states but the historic victory of reverend raphael warnock was perhaps best savor in the neighborhood where he preaches at the famed ebenezer baptist church well. and the welcome that. had no shortage of representation in washington for the 1st time in 20 years georgians are sending not one but 2 democrats to the senate warnock made history by
10:18 am
becoming georgia's 1st african-american senator and only the 11th black senator in u.s. history. after taking voters for putting their faith in him warnock wasted no time addressing the nation's codein health and economic crises we are dealing with folks who are facing eviction. people who have been waiting for months for relief and they saw politicians play the same old game last week we should have already passed its $2000.00 stimulus check and i can't wait to get to work. so on and represent the people's concerns in the united states senate 33 year old democrat john aasif is the youngest member of the senate since 1973 he is the jewish son of an immigrant and the c.e.o. of a documentary production company let's emulate in the spirit of courage and heroism
10:19 am
of those who have given so much to the health response to this crisis as we unite as a people to overcome this challenge of code 19 and to build a republic that lives up to our highest ideals of equality in god's eyes and equal justice under the law the democratic upset in georgia is also a victory for the army of grassroots organizations workers and volunteers who spent years registering black and minority voters an effort that never seems to while republicans who are a bit busy attacking the governor and my boss the democrats rather knocking on doors getting people to turn out to vote. republicans kelly lefler and david perdue have yet to concede saying they would exhaust every resource to ensure quote all legal. votes were counted between the november election and the senate runoff more than 76000 new voters registered the new georgia project says more than 112000
10:20 am
people who didn't vote in the presidential election voted in this runoff that kind of organizing prowess will surely be studied by both parties and immolated if possible in other states natasha going to aim elders era atlanta let's take you back to washington d.c. another house of representatives continuing to debate the vote on pennsylvania of course there were objection it's not just pennsylvania but arizona too we expect that debate to continue for a little while longer of course we'll continue to monitor what is said there and bring it to here on al-jazeera. let's move on to the day's other news now the e.u. has approved the use of maternal covert 19 vaccine as it tries to accelerate its inoculation program for more than 440000000 people but there's been criticism of the slow rollout across the continent the netherlands only started its vaccination campaign on wednesday the last in the e.u. to do so start fast and has more from amsterdam. great relief at the university
10:21 am
medical center in amsterdam and the 1st i.c.u. nurse got hooked by so by an tech shot thousands of doses of the vaccine had been stored in the south of the country from nearly 2 weeks with the hospital facing an alarming influx of patients and increasingly staff falling ill they had waited for this moment with frustration especially looking at neighboring countries where vaccinations were already in full swing medical workers like had nurses and the hayman barry were initially not included in the 1st group of x. nations but an urgent plea to the government to help she can barely believe it there was expect. it feels very strange because we've been waiting such a long time an emotional moment it's very exciting and i'm very happy we have been talking about this for such a long time. the dutch government came under strong criticism from parliament for being the last in europe to roll out its vaccinations prime minister over to
10:22 am
admitted mistakes were made. it would have been better if i had also personally asked our health agency to start preparing in case we had to change our strategy and start with large scale vaccinations 1st with medical workers and employees at care homes prioritised the elderly will have to wait at least another month. or longer it has taken too long but indeed they will have to check everything 1st but i agree they should inoculate medical workers who are working at the bats 1st you know we are waiting till it's all richer and the sooner the better. the european medicines agency has approved a 2nd fact see which will be distributed to the 27 e.u. member states with the 1st vice a biotech becoming scarce millions of doses of the more dramatic scene are eagerly awaited with slight plug downs extended through the approval process by the european medicines agency has come under scrutiny already trailing behind us and

the u.k. some european countries are getting frustrated with the delays efforts for one common vaccination strategy throughout the e.u. for snowing down the disabuse of corporate 19 vaccines step al-jazeera. more than half a 1000000 people in latin america have died from the virus the busy holiday season has led to a rise in cases in many countries and a slow rollout of vaccines is making the situation worse trees about reports not design reason health authorities are warning time to restrictions could be introduced. was it summertime in the southern cone and people are flocking to the beach in the province of one of cytosine argentina in spite of the pandemic the police are trying to disperse them to prevent more infections. here are concerned about the increasing kovan 1000 cases in the past few weeks.

months on the cases are on the rise once again we knew this could happen because of the holidays in the gatherings happening in the country what worries us the most are young people in their perception they are not at risk but then they meet with their parents and the situation gets worse fears of a 2nd wave in latin america our government are struggling to vaccinate the population securing backfield supplies has been a major challenge for this part of the world if compared to wealthier nations and that's why the government in the region are implementing knockdowns once again in spite of the economic impact they have. in the city of my mouse in the. state of a mass on us in brazil the mayor declared a state of emergency as the number of infections again posted a challenge to the health care system for the 1st order stuff to measure so much that we had to declare a state of emergency to give us a better and faster billeted to implement necessary measures for example real working on the possibility of getting vaccines from private company which would
