as were related to the rest of the city in those matters are actually actively being investigated but it does not appear they were related i think and then for mayor bows or could you talk about how the events of yesterday will impact how the city is preparing for the inauguration. i can't speak to you with any specifics at this stage michael but we will be looking very closely at what we learned what what's happening at the capitol working with congressional leadership and the presidential inauguration committee thank you and then. you did hear the secretary for 2 very important points are ready that the fencing that is going up around the cap of the capital not scalable fencing will be in place through the inauguration and the guard strength that is all that will be coming on the ground this weekend up to $6200.00 will be available through the
8:01 pm
inauguration as well which is a larger which is a larger composition of personnel than you would have for a standard inauguration thank you and then get up there for you secretary mccarthy the black fencing you said at least 30 days or no more than 30 days no direct at a minimum at a minimum ok and we'll work that in coordination with the city as well as the capitol police thank you yes mark. washington with 2 questions for secretary one could and i tried to follow along could you repeat the specifics about the fence would completely surround the u.s. capitol complex the fencing yes is very specific one more time yes so constitution independence. first and then the road there in front by the pond will be all the way around and how high will the 7 foot 7 be non-central compare that to what we see at the white house this is what was available we worked through this solution
8:02 pm
midstream yesterday and we were on the phones to get as quickly as possible a capability in place to extend the perimeter of the national capital complex we could get as many metropolitan police officers out into the streets so that in the event that these if this was to recur again or downstream chief conti would have as much flexibility with his police forces fossil and we could take over the static security positions and i appreciate it may not have been your decision and we know it's there and she said it wasn't their decision but what can you tell us about the lack of preparation prior to yesterday on the part of the u.s. capitol police and why in months prior we saw troops around the u.s. capitol when other protesters were coming but yesterday we didn't see anything why were there no troops or any other backup security there yesterday given what we all knew in the public domain you must have had better intelligence than we did but we
8:03 pm
all knew that this was possible if not likely what we don't have we rely on our intelligence for law enforcement and local police obviously but with respect to the tree coordination to the mayor's point those things are all being looked at there were discussions previously with the capitol police and others and no request of the d.c. national guard were made. obviously it is a different branch of government so we have to be requested to come on to the grounds. yes record washingtonian mayor bows or correct me if i'm wrong my understanding is that with the public emergency any curfews business closures that's going to be kind of a day to day decision based on the threat in the city is that correct yes on the curfew question and then what can residents expect over the next you know weeks or so i mean i know that there's supposed to be another meeting of insurrectionist around the nadia ration but in the interim what are you expecting i mean we have residents questioning you know should i take off work to get groceries when i walk
8:04 pm
my dog what you 1st see in the coming days i think. should go about living their lives in if there is a need. as i did over the weekend leading up to this to ask them to stay away from certain areas i will do that i don't have that request at this stage so right now we want them to go about their lives be signed up for our alert system chris. thank you. look at the live picture from washington d.c. that is the d.c. mayor morial about his or as well as other officials from the metropolitan police department and they're just giving an update on the deadly capitol hill riots that took place on wednesday when asked about the capitol police is response the mayor had this to say she said that's obviously it is a failure or then you wouldn't have had police lines breached and she also flat out
8:05 pm
blamed the president himself for the riots saying the president is responsible for the violence adding also it's just not the president who must be held accountable so too must the quote domestic terrorists who stormed the capitol and threaten members of congress and the mayor also describing the riots according to her textbook terrorism she did say so she's calling on the joint terrorism task force to investigate arrest and prosecute any individual who entered the capital destroyed property or incited acts and she did question as well why the federal law enforcement response was much stronger during the black lives matter protests that took place over the summer and she says she's demanding answers let's bring in jane who is listening in and joining us from washington d.c. because that is where the discussion has gone patty a lot of people just questioning the security lapses and failures on capitol hill
8:06 pm
yesterday. a lot of people are questioning that that i think it's starting to settle in and people are really starting to realize what happened the terror that people inside the capitol faced i was here yesterday one of the things that was remarkable is it seemed like there was a lot of security and i said this out live on the air yesterday that i've been in d.c. for a while and that was probably the most seen perhaps not as much for as a state of the union but that they were able to breach so. quickly and now if you're looking on social media and all of these videos that are posted in some cases and some of the entrances all they had was like a bicycle fence and 4 or 5 police officers that obviously could not push back a mob of thousands so obviously d.c. pushing saying that it was the capitol police they are responsible for this what was remarkable is how long it lasted there we had been told in the run up that the national guard had in fact activated we just heard from the army secretary that in
8:07 pm
fact there was no request so there are a lot of questions about this there's a lot of questions about how the police did in fact respond even if they were outnumbered they weren't necessarily outgunned we saw much more brutal put down of matter protesters from authorities in the summer so obviously there's a question of is there a racial disparity what was the plan why didn't they have more people i think that is going to be as you heard the mayor say. they're going to investigate this also all these images on social media in one case of the capitol police officer seeming to move the barricades letting the protesters in there's some pictures of police officers there at least they appear to be police officers taking selfies with the protesters so there are more questions than answers i just want to paint the scene for you now it's much colder in fact unlike yesterday we haven't been evacuated because of a suspicious package but i was just actually stepped outside and we haven't seen national guard since i got here and now we do see them lining the capitol we just
8:08 pm
saw them putting up that fence that we now know isn't just for the ration which they usually have fencing but that this kind of fencing that appears so it's a much different scene today but again it is how long it took authorities to regain control of the capitol i was there take a look at how it unfold. the u.s. capitol building under siege. thousands of president donald trump's followers surrounded the building and burst in the. result a remarkable scene of law makers clean and the police seemingly overwhelmed social media filled with pictures of trump's followers and offices in the chambers running free in what is supposed to be one of the most protected buildings in the country it started as u.s. president donald trump called his supporters to protest what he falsely claimed was a stolen election rylan them up with inflammatory words and misinformation are we going to walk down to the capitol were and we're going to cheer
8:09 pm
on our brave senators and congressmen and women as a joint session of congress met to certify the election the president's followers heated his words and descended on the capitol chaos followed. tear gas and flash bangs to try and push them back from the front of the capitol others moved to the back quickly pushing through a line of police many entering the building congress was dismissed and its members blood at one point reports of an armed standoff at least one protester was shot and killed several officers injured the incoming president responded this is not to sent it's just shorter it's chaos it borders on sedition and it must and now i call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward he demanded the president tell
8:10 pm
his supporters to go home and trump did but continue to repeat his lies i know your pain i know you're hurt. we had an election that was stolen from us it was a landslide election and everyone knows it what impact is all of this going to have on the republican party going forward. will this is going to be once and for all and think going to answer the question is the republican party the party of donald trump he wanted to think that it was in that speech yesterday rally not his supporters he went on to say you know if they don't support us we're going to make sure they lose their primary in 2 years so will this be a bridge too far remember this is a president who said he could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose any support and it actually seemed to that was the case no matter what he said or what he did will this be a little bit too much for his supporters if it is in fact in the polls it shows
8:11 pm
that he's losing support among all powerful base we might see for more republicans break from him so this is going to be a real awakening for the republican party there are moves there to impeach the president there there are it's a possibility that they'll be votes on that and that would be the democrats trying to put the republicans on record is this the party is this the president do you still want to stand by after those horrific events that we saw unfold here on the capitol yesterday all right thank you very much for that update from capitol hill let's speak to alan fischer joining us from the white house so we've already seen one significant resignation today do we expect others to follow. that's right mick mulvaney who was the special envoy to northern ireland former chief of staff to donald trump has resigned said he can't 7 the administration and the more after what he saw over the last 24 hours set that note to a secular state might prompt you who is in fact his boss we also saw the resignation of stephanie grisham she used to be the press secretary she actually
8:12 pm
left that post without holding one single briefing she moved on to become the chief of staff to 1st lady malani a trump she quit eyes did another cup a couple of junior staffers there as well but we're hearing that there's going to be other resignations but no one's actually put pen to paper yet on those resignation letters we're told that rubber o'brien who is the national security adviser is considering his position as is as is his deputy but nothing from them yet and also a name a keep hearing is elaine chao she's the transport secretary now she's been involved with the administration from the very adly days and interestingly is also married to mitch mcconnell who is the leader of the republican in the senate and of course was very critical of donald trump people are also talking about the 2825th amendment which would allow them to remove the president from office that has been calls from a number of people on both sides to make sure that that goes through in the next day one of them was chuck schumer the leader of the democrats in the senate and we've also heard from republicans too like adam kennings that who is. a congressman
8:13 pm
from illinois only d.h. and the president has become. just. for this reason they're called the vice president now can. you say. you have the same captain. and. so alan would do expect to same donald trump today. well he's holding. an awards ceremony for the presidential medal of freedom that's going to 3 golfing legends anika stone stone gary player from south africa and believes that her eye is actually died in 1956 so that's going to be posthumous he had a medal of freedom ceremony on monday gave it to david nunez one of his close allies in congress but that was held behind closed doors with only official cameras
8:14 pm
from the white house there that's likely to happen again today because then the president can avoid any awkward questions about what happened over the last 24 hours we're told he's very angry with my parents for not standing up for him in congress or the suggesting that he saved his political career by appointing a vice president and feels he's now been stabbed in the back he's very angry that he didn't get the vote overturned in congress but no other comment about the people who actually stormed congress on wednesday so demanding that the whole the recount or stop of this deal as they put it and of course you won't get a chance to see anything on twitter instagram or facebook still banned from twitter for the time being and also that 2 week ban from facebook and instagram ok alan fischer thank you for that update from the white house and in a statement about that decision that alan was just mentioning about the decision to ban the u.s. president from its platforms facebook c.e.o.
8:15 pm
mark zuckerberg said it was clear that donald trump intended to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful transition of power so he wrote this we believe the risks of allowing the president to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great therefore we are extending the block we have placed on his facebook and instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next 2 weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete. still ahead on al-jazeera coming up in just a moment digging deeper how the illegal and extraction of sound in bangladesh is eroding livelihoods. are. a continuation of more of the same but of an increase in the east of the

now that we've got the top stories on al-jazeera the. move comes one day off to a crowd of trump supporters violently breached the capitol one person was shot and killed by police while 3 others died during the riots 68 people were arrested this of course referring to the riots that took place on capitol hill on wednesday and as a result of that facebook and instagram have banned donald trump indefinitely that's according to the company's c.e.o. mark zuckerberg in a statement. that move back and will last for at least the next 2 weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete. well congress was eventually able to formally approved joe biden's election victory clearing him to be sworn in as president on january 20th the senate and house rejected several challenges made to
8:19 pm
the counting of votes in biden's favor. so as you've been hearing there are questions being raised now about the security lapse that was seen on capitol hill on wednesday and how protesters were able to breach the walls of capitol hill let's bring in diane goldstein she's a retired police officer and the executive director of the law enforcement action partnership she's joining us via skype from las vegas thanks so much for speaking to us on al-jazeera the mayor of d.c. maria bowzer was speaking just a short while ago at a press conference and she flat out said this is a failure. do you presuming you agree with that statement and to how do you explain what happened. i think it's a complete failure of leadership at the capitol police level is you know we know that they had between $6.00 to $8000.00 you know federal law enforcement
8:20 pm
d.c. police national guard a vailable to immediately respond to something like the breach and they just did not use the resources in a fashion that they should have and i understand that there was they didn't want to inflame the situation but doesn't that call to the disparate treatment between black protesters and white protestors and so what i saw was the minute the breaches occurred there was no on seeing command post there was no and media hauling of backed up resources and then an unidentified senior official went and asked why the capitol police hadn't taken a more aggressive stay on the stand couldn't answer right so do i think this was down to a lack of planning by the capitol police or were they simply overwhelmed. it's both
8:21 pm
it is it is critically absolutely both that that they did not take the threat. white nationalist white supremacist and other organizations that were clearly there seriously and what we know in the last 4 years and what we have is we have intelligence reports from the f.b.i. that continue to state that domestic terrorism white domestic terrorism is one of the most dangerous things that we need to deal with as a nation and the trumpet ministration has inflamed it and has ignored it and back has set up various responses that really reflect the inherent systemic institutional racism that people of color have been calling out from. going on this point i mean when you look at the of the protests that took place
8:22 pm
over the summer in the black lives matter protests security a law enforcement officials were deployed in large numbers ahead of these protests so are you saying that there is racial disparity in protesters at capitol hill on wednesday were treated differently because they are whites. you know what my. opinion absolutely they were handled with kid gloves i did i did not see the same level of treatment at lafayette square that was a complete peaceful protest and because the president wanted to get a shot of him with the bible. people were significantly injured and let me be very clear is is i am not supporting that injury or the desk. really they're not ride because they were insurrectionists and it is
8:23 pm
a horrible situation that was fueled by a lack of planning and by a lack of leadership and independently if you look at the response from the individual officers there was no one taking control and directing them there was no one there calling in backup boxers we know that there were swat teams that were staged where are they stayed you know we we didn't see the fences put up like they did around the white house because the white house was afraid of protesters in so it really calls into question leadership right so what happens now to annex that sort of the process of accountability. i think you have to have a significant set no review. the planning process
8:24 pm
since the events leading up to the issuing of permits why wasn't the national guard used more effectively as i recall they were in armed why did not why did we not set up various perimeter points so we could in fact protect the capital and this is you know and it may very well call for congressional hearings but there has to be a review and leadership has to be held accountable for its many failures all right thank you very much we thank you diane for speaking to us from las vegas thank you very much really appreciate it now the u.s. president elect joe biden has selected judge merrick garland to serve as his attorney general garland had been nominated to the supreme court by barack obama in 2000 to 16 but they republican controlled senate refused to hold hearings on his
