1:01 am
case load forces a new state of emergency in japan. at this time 24 hours ago an angry violent mob had stormed the u.s. capitol forcing their way past police and penetrating the heart of u.s. democracy they were driven by the false belief a claim perpetuated by donald trump that the november presidential election had been stolen by the democrats or by the end 4 people were day 15 police officers in hospital one of them in a critical condition it's a very different scene there on thursday now calm has been restored business as much as it can be as usual but former trump allies have resigned that he's been banned by facebook and instagram at least until he leaves office there are calls for the vice president meanwhile to invoke the 25th amendment that's the
1:02 am
constitutional clause that allows a president to be removed from office articles of impeachment have also been circulated well so far more than 60 people have been arrested on charges ranging from violating a curfew to carrying unlicensed or prohibited firearms that number is expected to rise and while there is growing scrutiny over the capitol police response the house speaker says the president is to blame. the gleeful desecration of the u.s. capitol which is the temple of america of our american democracy and the by let's target in congress are harz that will forever stain our nation's history instigated by the president of the united states that's why it's such a sting in calling for this edition act president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people i join the senate democratic leader and
1:03 am
calling on the bus president to remove this president by immediately invoking the 25th amendment if the vice president or cabinet do not act the congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment every leans on the joins us live now from washington d.c. a city very old thread there from nancy pelosi if the vice president basically doesn't invoke the 25th amendment then congressman go ahead and peach have we heard anything from mike pence about potentially going down the amendment route. we have not mike pence has been very quiet about that so we have not gotten any information if he's even considering that however i will tell you that there is growing and growing calls out of washington from particularly democrats but also many republicans as well a few that are currently elected officials as well as former government officials that are republicans and even donald trump's former chief of staff mike kelly who
1:04 am
have come out and said they think that mike pence should invoke the 25th amendment that would be one of potentially 4 scenarios that could play out here and i'll give go through all 4 very quickly the 25th them invoking the 25th the men would be mike pence then goes to the cabinet members gets consensus from the cabinet members that that should be invoked and that donald trump should be removed from power and then it would go to congress again this rest specifically with mike pence and we simply don't know if he will go down that road very dramatic road it would be the other option there is you can heard from from nancy pelosi the speaker the house is articles of impeachment could be circulating are circulating they congress could go that route however that's has a lot of hurdles as well because congress is on recess right now and it would call it would mean that congress needs to be called back to washington to go forward with this so could that happen maybe but could it happen in 13 days who knows at
1:05 am
this juncture donald there is talk about don donald trump potentially resigning no no indications that he's even considering doing that and then of course the 4th scenario would be we just go through the next 13 days as it is now with donald trump as president and everyone sort of holding their breath that get through the next 13 days without any sort of major crisis but clearly the bottom line here is is that the very fact that this is even being discussed openly in washington right now removed potentially removing a sitting president just tells you how dire the situation is here. every elizondo with the latest there from washington d.c. thank you. well one of the president's closest allies republican senator lindsey graham says wednesday's unrest has tarnished trump's record in office become close to the president personally i think his president has been consequential from a conservative point of view it's been an amazing 4 years in terms of judges
1:06 am
securing the border a vaccine in record deregulating the con to me cutting taxes historic mideast peace agreements the destruction of the caliphate all on and on and on was tarnished by yesterday when it comes to accountability the president needs to understand that his actions are the problem not the solution well particle angels us live now from capitol hill i guess there are some republicans now coming out more strongly against president trump and what happened yesterday what do you make of how republicans are trying to frame all of this. i think it's the clearest indication yet that republicans are afraid that the winds of public opinion are going to go against the president and therefore themselves you seemed several members of the president's staff quit in disgust but again this is a been a president who's been incredibly controversial said incredibly racist things at
1:07 am
times his policies many have described the muslim band and they separating children from their families at the border as racist actions lindsey graham said a couple things that i think we need to fact check here he said that he became close with the president because he wanted to be able to influence his policies that's a justification that we've heard from a lot of people who went on to say that the people close to the president now need to stay close to him indicating that they've really protected the country that's something we've heard from a lot of former trump officials say trying to justify their service so that they don't take much of the blame for some of what trump has done he said that he has spoken out against the president this is really truly one of the 1st times i can remember him saying anything even remotely close to negative about the president he compared what happened here 24 hours ago to the black lives matter riots that most of those were peaceful protests but there were riots there was looted they didn't
1:08 am
go after the u.s. capitol the symbol of democracy and joe biden said today if that had been black lives matter the police response would have been a much different thing then he went on to say that the reason he didn't acknowledge joe biden was president because he wanted to see have the court cases play out he said you didn't ask me if george bush won against al gore or you didn't as democrats that ok very different situation they were still counting ballots in that case until the supreme court stepped in and gave the election to george bush and the vote difference there was $537.00 votes this is been 7000000 and absolutely no evidence of widespread voter. fraud so you can see was lindsey graham the 1st person close to the president trying to rewrite a little bit of his very close history with the president. and. looking at a more practical matter now i mean you're in the rotunda i guess
1:09 am
a sort of the inside capitol hill the very place that was stormed 24 hours ago what about security arrangements you know the rest of the world that was thought that that would be one of the safest places if not in the u.s. in the world what's security like now. the rest of the world and me and everyone who works in this building spoke in the staff members who said they never thought they had to worry because there's a lot of security here there was a lot of security outside just visible to the public and yet they were quickly overrun there's a lot of questions about their behavior i mean there were some capitol police officers who were injured who fought hard to keep them at bay but then your seat on social media video some of what appear to be capitol police officers taking selfies with these rioters or moving the gates to let them in there been calls for investigation and i'm sure that will go forward today is a totally different day when i came in about 8 hours ago at about 2 blocks away
1:10 am
from every street into the compound they had dump trucks and dump trucks are there because if somebody posed an explosive laden car they're not going to get through a dump truck there is national guard all over the place state police police rather jurisdictions i just saw them walking the grounds carefully looking to make sure there were no explosives they put up a huge fence they say it's unscalable that's going to stay up for at least 30 days and they say by the inauguration $6200.00 guard national guardsmen will be in washington and here's why there is really good reason for concern there was one of the protesters who tried to come at me while we were outside about 24 hours ago and as my security detail pushed. bath he said will be back under his breath he mumbled something that sounded like with our goggles so there is a real concern in washington that is still boarded up every building you see in here is boarded up with plywood that this is just the beginning that this isn't
1:11 am
going to end even the inauguration day so widespread concern and operation they of course on the 20th so not that long from now for the moment patty capitol hill patty thank you. now president elect joe biden has also spoken branding the people responsible for the unrest domestic terrorists witnessed yesterday was not dissent it was not disorder it was not protest it was chaos there were protesters don't dare call them protesters there were a riotous mob insurrectionist domestic terrorists is that basic it's that simple and i wish we could say we couldn't see it coming well chris a salumi is live for us in wilmington delaware where of course the president elect is speaking at
1:12 am
a christian the bottle say whether he thought the 25th amendment should be invoked . very interesting barbara he did not say whether or not the 25th amendment should be invoked in fact he told reporters specifically before launching into his formal remarks that he wouldn't address that subject teen also did not mention any specific charges that should be brought against the demonstrators who did storm the capitol and i think what we are seeing here this was supposed to be an announcement of his nominee for attorney general is a signal of a more hands off approach to the justice department than what we've become accustomed to under president chantel more traditional approach to the justice department trump broke norms and raised eyebrows by publicly at times pressuring his own attorney general to launch investigations or take stands that he saw as politically favorable to him joe biden suggesting that's not the way to do
1:13 am
business saying outright that's not the way to do business in fact he talked about what happened in the capitol as the culmination of 4 years of president and his disregard for the constitution and the rule of law he did nominate merrick garland an appeals court judge a federal appeals court judge well known known as a centrist for his nominee as attorney general this is someone known for being nominated to the supreme court by president obama that nomination never went through because republicans refused to hold a hearing waiting till the next administration hoping to get in a more conservative judge but nonetheless garland known as a centrist. the president elect described him as someone who would be a lawyer for the people not for him he had someone with impeccable integrity he said
1:14 am
someone who could. restore faith in these institutions he also talked about 3 women that he have has nominated as well to serve with garland including 2 prominent civil rights attorneys again hitting on a theme that was part of his campaign an issue that was raised during his campaign in the priority of a priority for democrats remember during the campaign there were people marching in the streets across the united states in reaction to the police killing of an unarmed black man bringing out this long standing issue of inequities in the criminal justice system here in the united states and joe biden said flat out in his remarks that had the demonstrators who stormed the capitol been black lives matter demonstrators they would have been treated a lot differently so again joe biden not talking specifically about
1:15 am
how the president should be treated but signaling a more hands off approach to criminal justice matters in the u.s. chris the salumi with the latest from wilmington delaware christine thank you. well still to come here on al-jazeera too risky for facebook and blocked from twitter social media giants clamped down on trump's that direct lines to his supporters rolling up their sleeves to protect their community but it's feared coronavirus could soon overwhelm british hospitals. queens and in australia remains the focus of the heaviest rain the last few days and the next few days the remains of tropical cycle are simply adding to the
1:16 am
generating big showers and we get some flooding as a result in tropical queensland possibly in the outback as well the on shore breeze means sydney was de rosa the co was passing showers but not the big ones that you've had over the last week or so a lot of sunshine in new south wales and victoria south australia's temperatures in the thirty's now perth is coming down to 35 now quite active weather in the opposite season has been going on for last few days this extremely cold air coming across the sea means a lot of snow has been falling in japan and is still going to fall as a forecast for friday and saturday will produce maybe a dozen meter of snow in her car to the western side of honshu all the way down well to the south of south korea and in the yellow sea just catching the edge of china for the most part is cold sunny weather frosty by day and by the warming up little by saturday they won't think that in hong kong with a temperature of 13 degrees unusual weather in india you don't expect to see rain

1:18 am
and let's take you straight to the white house where the press secretary candy mcenaney is briefing the media let's listen in today on our nation's capital was appalling reprehensible and i said that it felt to be american way. we condemn it the president and this administration in the strongest possible terms it is unacceptable and those that broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law i stood here at this podium the day after a historic church burned amid violent riots and i said this the 1st amendment guarantees the right of the people to peaceably assemble what we saw last night in washington and across the country was not that and quote make no mistake what we saw yesterday afternoon in the halls of our capitol likewise was not that we grieve for the loss of life and those injured and we hold them in our prayers and close to our hearts at this time. we thank our valiant law enforcement officers who are true
1:19 am
american heroes. what we saw yesterday was a group of violent rioters undermining the legitimate 1st amendment rights of the many thousands who came to peacefully have their voices heard in our nation's capital those who violently besieged our capital are the opposite of everything this administration stands for. the core value of our administration is the idea that all citizens have the right to live in safety peace and freedom those who are working in this building are working to ensure an orderly transition of power now it is time for america to unite to come together to reject the violence that we have seen we are one american people under god thank you very much for the lake. and. came back in a the white house press secretary leaving without questions as you can see here
1:20 am
there were plenty of questions and they are from. the assembled press she said the white house the entire white house believes that violence in the nation's capital that we saw on wednesday was appalling she said we condemn it in the strongest possible terms are very brief a news conference there from the white house press secretary let's go to gabriel is on the who joins us from washington d.c. and was listening in as well so this is really the 1st time we hear officially from the white house since the events of yesterday what do you make of it. well i think what you saw there was the white house press secretary trying to do something very clearly there clean up a big mess there are several things that came out of that short statement there that struck me as you could tell from the journalists who were in the room lots of questions were thrown at her but she declined to answer any of them but
1:21 am
a couple key points came out of this the statement she said was from the entire white house she did not say it was from the president of the united states or from anyone else to the entire white house which tells me that there is some real worry in the white house or there was some real concern in the white house with the fact that there had been no message coming out of the president or the white house and so she is the spokes person for the president of the united states but in this case she said this is a message from the entire white house without mentioning president donald trump specifically which i found to be a little interesting she also said towards the end she said that we are all going to pursue an orderly transition of power this is a clear indication that at least from her speaking from the white house standpoint is that they want to kind of move on past this challenging of the election results that has been going on by donald trump for several weeks now and that the white house is sort of saying listen we admit we lost there's going to be an orderly
1:22 am
transition of power now this was certainly a new in some sense but again again this statement coming from the entire white house without specifically mentioning the current main occupant of the white house donald trump why was it because donald trump didn't want his name used is it because i mean donald trump could tell kilian magni please read this statement from me and it clearly she did not do that because perhaps she did not get orders to do that so certainly some interesting comments here you know she said the it was the scenes from the capitol were appalling and her words reprehensible and that they condemn it but again this is going on more than 24 hours now after the rioting took place at the capitol so a lot to make of this. gary lives on the with the latest there from washington d.c. gabe thank you we're joined now by jack kingston a former republican congressman from georgia and that visor to the president's 2016
1:23 am
election campaign sir thank you for joining us here on al-jazeera a you are also a loyal supporter of the president and help them with the current campaign as well or certainly you know spoken his behalf what is your reaction to the events that we saw on capitol hill on wednesday. i think they were horrible 'd 'd denounce the violence this summer i did not state yesterday the. lawbreakers should be put in jail and persecuted to whatever the extent of the law is is you know i worked in the capitol for 22 years i had friends who were law in their offices yesterday all day long and new people who were on the house floor and in the senate chambers so you know it was it was personal but from the american standpoint that is not the 'd nation that we are all about you know a lot of people don't know this but in the house chamber is a court of george washington which originally had a sword in his hand the sword was painted out because we wanted to send the signal
1:24 am
that the house chamber is a substitute for a bio it's a substitute for civil war that's where people come together and there are now things peacefully so it was a whore yeah i mean unfortunately obviously a lot of people didn't get that message a yesterday lindsey graham the republican senator spoke a little bit earlier and he said that the president needs to understand that his actions were part of the problem do you think that the president's actions and the rally that was held and the way that he has continued to claim that the election was stolen that in some part that contributed to the people gathered there storming capitol hill. well i certainly do say that anybody who is talking encounter with the crowd can have our armed forces silences as well as insert a fairly letter gave me for interrupting but it's not just any when i asked you specifically about the president of the united states and the following that he has within the republican party do you think that things he said were partly
1:25 am
responsible for what happened. let me answer the question that i certainly think anybody who works a crowd into a frenzy i remember this summer when judiciary chairman jerry network would not condemn. july 27th he was interviewed and said it was a mill that empty with cars and riots maxine waters the chairman of the banking committee senate disrupt republicans anywhere they are so what i would say to you is yes politicians using their bully pulpit can have a an effect on crowds and it certainly 90 percent of the people 99 percent of the people don't listen to it understand that it's simply just rhetoric but unfortunately you've got that where one person who will do insane things as we saw yesterday it's funny let me. go on look i had a family friend at the demonstration he said at the make the save america
1:26 am
demonstration in which the president spoke and he said it was extremely peaceful but what happened after the demonstration when they started walking to the capitol not all or some of them they were joined by more rabble rousers 68 been arrested want them persecuted 'd no question about it the certain cranford's even publicans that what happened yesterday that proved to be a tipping point we have seen resignations from the white house we have seen strong words from republicans and there are calls now for the 25th amendment to be invoked and that democrats are thinking of impeachment do you think the president should be removed from office in his last 2 weeks. no i think that most of the just rhetoric the people who are calling for that unfortunately have lost a lot of their credibility they've been trying to impeach the president now for 4 years if you started using the 25th amendment both parties would use that on every president from here on their out in mechanically they know
1:27 am
a responsible person should know that it takes a working days for that to be weighed and considered by the congress and what are you going to do. if it does pass put in place in the last 30 years this office this is a political thing in us not being not forthright like. you know this is just going to give them one more reason to go on the run right against the president what they need to do is come together you know republicans have been quick to denounce the violence yesterday just as they did this summer it would be great if all parties would weigh in measure violence equally or not cheer for certain protesters the problem so is that this bill is aside this goes beyond just republicans and democrats because the president of the united states is the most powerful man in the world at the head of the most powerful country in the world and people around the world were watching on yesterday and it was a pretty terrifying spectacle with your hand on your heart can you guarantee to a global audience that there's no chance that the president would do something
1:28 am
reckless over the next 2 weeks it could have an impact well beyond the united states. i don't see the president doing anything reckless i think there's too many say garcia make sure that whoever is and then after skin that worthless look and i would say this 'd is somebody who actually oversaw the capitol hill place when i chaired the committee of jurisdiction they did a great job yesterday. i think that we have to have law and order it's not the face of government that i stood for our want and i think my parents acted very admirably yesterday i hope that people give him the respect that is due to him and you know i do that now so quickly just as i did the summer when anteater was tearing down buildings and small businesses and barn and down sharply that look a lot of people would say to the different thing but i just want to ask you one last question as every public and i know you're worried that there is
1:29 am
a part of your party millions of people who still believe that the election is still then seeing as biden is going to be president in 2 weeks are you worried about that both for the country but also for your party. you know i think the president actually president biden would have a great opportunity here to bring people together his statement today was not a very good statement and you have to understand this and i know the left doesn't want to understand this barbara but let me make sure that people do understand these people feel alienated they feel that the press biased the absolute 'd prejudiced against the president for 4 years big tex bias hollywood's bias the f.b.i. and the judicial system double standard the phony russia hoax and the trumped up in pietschmann charges that has come home to roost it is not a good thing i think good people on the left and so you know what we have are
1:30 am
playing our hand does not give these people that skews the ideas for the head yesterday but i think the left in the right could start by coming together by us and you know what where we've been wrong let us admit it where we have commonality which is far greater than our differences let's get together on it and i think it's as you pointed out not just a number in our political interests it's in the world's interest it isn't jack kingston a former republican congressman from georgia sir thank you thank you. hello i'm barbara starr and land then here's a reminder of our top stories calls for president trying to be removed from office have grown following wednesday's violent unrest that the u.s. capitol house speaker nancy pelosi has called on the vice president to begin the process to remove trump from office if gleeful.
