chaos as the u.s. congress certify joe biden as the next president crowds fueled by president donald trump's false claim that the election was stolen from him stormed the capitol building to disrupt the democratic process social media sites blocked trump for inciting violence world leaders appealed for calm using the sort of language that the u.s. often uses on other nations some congress members are openly calling for trump to be removed from office before biden's inauguration in 2 weeks' time practical hane reports. the u.s. capitol building under siege. thousands of president donald trump's followers surrounded the building and burst in the result a remarkable scene of lawmakers clean and the police seemingly overwhelmed social media filled with pictures of trump's followers and offices in the chambers running free in what is supposed to be one of the most protected buildings in the country it started as u.s. president donald trump called his supporters to protest what he falsely claimed was

and it must and now i call on this mob to pull back and allow them work of democracy to go forward he demanded the president tell his supporters to go home and trump did but continue to repeat his lies i know your pain i know your hurt. we had an election that was stolen from us it was a landslide election and everyone knows it is not a film the u.s. capitol the national guard the police they try to regain control of the building in the morning and it will bring fresh questions about exactly how this happened and whether they'll be any repercussions for the people whose words led to this unbelievable action pedicle again al-jazeera at the u.s. capital. international reaction has ranged from concern to condemnation the head of the u.n. said he's saddened and concerned by the events the italian foreign minister called

a moment ago some of that international reaction that's been coming in regarding the events in the capital in washington d.c. yesterday you know countries like iran and germany and italy all reacting to what went on what does what happened in washington d.c. signify to the rest of the world and say about the state of american democracy right now. well thank you for having me and that's a great opening question well ultimately it shows the power of leadership the power of a leader's words in a way that forces people to recognize that words matter that words have consequences and these trump supporters came directly from a rally with the president where he told them that the election was stolen and he told them to march to the capitol and stop the steel and i'm sure they thought they were doing the right thing and that they were being patriots for their country and the reason they think that is because they've been lied to for the last 2 months

about the election and for the last 4 years about everything else by the president of the united states and the political and media bubbles that have enabled him so you know and we see politicians like ted cruz and kevin mccarthy pretending they can denounce the violence that occurred in the capital while still maintaining that the 1st amendment gives them the right to protest the legitimacy of this election. this is an abject refusal to take responsibility for what the leader's words can do there is a direct path a direct link between that saying over and over that your country is stolen and your listeners rising up and defending that country and i have to say the fact that as horrifying as this event has been it has forced a final reckoning a final repudiation of trump from many politicians who have held out until today until they were finally confronted with this terrifying visual evidence of what

happens when the president of the united states willfully ignores his oath to uphold our constitution you know we see kelly loffler the recently defeated senator of georgia say that in good conscious she can no longer vote against the sort of occasion of the election we see lindsey graham telling the president help me out enough is enough it's over so you know. we can only hope that this shocking event continues to shame our politicians into being the kinds of leaders that the american people need desperately at this moment in time and i'll just finish by saying that ultimately this shows the immense polarization we face as a country the intensity and necessity of the task ahead for by specifically the needs of focus on unity unifying policies and rhetoric that rebuilds us as a nation and of course that need to focus on unity and healing that has consequences for his agenda going forward jill from your vantage point as an

activist an organizer on the ground in georgia who worked so hard to turn out the vote for these runoff elections i mean from your perspective what does all this say about the state of the country. and you for having me and thank you for that wonderful question i believe the activism organizers like myself have had many conversations about the possibility of this kind of response by land response to the outcome of what was a free and fair election i think the american people have spoken those of us who can vote and have made a decision about where we see the future of this country going i think the now's the time for our leaders including joe biden including come here is including the congress in including president trump who still has a following in the united states to be honest about where we're going be honest

about what this means for democracy and be honest about the history that this is situated in we know that we study the history that white supremacist violence has always there and american democracy at least this democratic project that we are chanting and so the only difference between what's happening now what has happened in the past and response to black people showing up and using their vote people of color and other communities showing up and using meryl and expressing their voice the only difference between this situation and let it happen in the past is that we now have an opportunity to actually continue to wield that power and actually take a stance on the question of freedoms civil rights and justice for our people in this town tree now a number of people are calling this the last straw for donald trump they're demanding he be removed from office immediately take this from the washington post

it says the president is unfit to remain in office for the next 14 days every 2nd he retains the vast powers of the presidency as a threat to public order and national security vice president pence who had to be whisked. off the senate floor for his own protection should immediately gather the cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment declaring that mr trump is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office rina that editorial from the washington post also said that responsibility for this act of sedition lies squarely with the president from your perspective do you believe that in the coming hours and days we're going to be seeing more calls for invoking the 25th amendment i mean would mike pence do that would this gain traction at this point. well i must say number one is that yes the claims of my squarely with the president united states for his words were the very reason that those stopped the steel protesters who were

supposed to gather very peacefully which is the great american tradition of foreigners to our democracy they have that right to gather and demonstrate peacefully they did not they were propelled by his words into what was he in its actions and i believe that yes that was long and blame lies with the president but it also is shared by senators like josh holly and ted cruz who are part of the dozen senators who wanted to object to the certification of the electoral college results those senators i believe share some of the blame for what happened yesterday actually senator hawley was witnessed holding a fist up in sort of support of solidarity when he was walking to the senate yesterday towards the beginning of the day i had a very unique front row seat to everything over the course of 5 hours yesterday i want to play own eyes as i have in just disbelief and as protesters breach the parameter in a way that i was absolutely sure was not good and at that moment i saw it happen

and i knew that the police force the law enforcement there on capitol hill were overwhelmed i knew this because i spent 4 years as a senior congressional staffer on the u.s. house of representatives i i was there at a time and this still remains that you're when you're walking on the wrong side of the side wrong side of the side the capitol police reprimand you they give you a look at what are you doing to watch the images of yesterday to watch some of these individuals being escorted downstairs by riot police the young woman who lost her life yesterday i believe trying to make it through the speaker's lobby she was shot and then lost her life later on the day she was trying to commit a crime and this was not an innocent bystander like in charlottesville virginia when you had white supremacist. heather hired an innocent bystander for like yesterday was not just atrocious on every level it was undemocratic it on anti-conservative and i for one plan to hold the republican party. accountable and

responsible in the days to come i made my career in the republican party and these so hot leaders deserve to pay the price just when i saw you nodding along to a lot of what reno was saying it seems like you want to jump in so i let you do that but i also want to ask you about the fact that there are growing calls right now to impeach donald trump again do you think that's going to gain traction could we see that playing out again in the roughly 2 weeks he has left as president thank you. i was really not in a line to both jill and reno they were both making excellent points there and amazing personal experiences look. i understand the point of why the president is a danger to democracy and i think that's something that is very very clear now in a way that people cannot look away from. that said impeachment

does take a long time to to get through i think that bernie sanders has already been quoted as saying it's not possible to to make that happen again within 2 weeks it is possible to invoke the 25th amendment. that is actually something that needs to be strengthened because right now the only person who can invoke it is the vice president along with the cabinet of the president and these are people who are beholden to the president are a part of the president and their political fortunes are tied to him so that's for example one of those very tricky situations where maybe a bipartisan or nonpartisan committee in charge of the 25th amendment would have already done so perhaps soon after his inability to concede the election but unfortunately i'm just not sure that. i'm not sure exactly how much data we will see these new converts from the republican 'd side in

a rainy president trump in these last few weeks jill in your previous answer you touched upon racism in the united states and i want to talk about the fact there are a lot of activists you know in the aftermath of what happened in d.c. who are saying look can you imagine what would have happened in washington d.c. if these have been black lives matter protesters. what do you say to that. as ever we don't even have to imagine last summer near experience in d.c. and in the rest of the united states and even parts of the world we experienced the largest what has been called the largest uprisings in movement for civil rights in the history of this nation and so we don't have to imagine what would happen because me start over this summer as are my car ads and fall organizers are in the rest of the rope on national t.v. and international t.v. star united states governors mayors and other elected officials

deployed the national guard on peaceful protesters around the movement for black lives we also saw them use rubber bullets we saw them brutalize many protesters who came out in people who were only then at the protest but we're just trying to get home we start here guess our people we saw them deploy our sort of violence against our people when we didn't even get to that point starting a national federal building and so i think that to say that we can even imagine what would happen if black people or other protesters for racial justice protesters who actually have a viable cars had actually started the capital because it wouldn't happen we would we would be dead before it happened because we start and lost many of our comrades this summer rena there's a growing schism a very public rift in the republican party right now there are more republican

leaders who are breaking ranks with president trump how is this going to play out how does the republican party define itself going forward. if i may while it's a question that needs to be a step believe it's a little too soon for that question this is just been probably the biggest event and in our nation's history in modern in the modern era is what i should say that so many of us are still processing there's a lot of pain out there as you know to watch the images as they become apparent to us how these protesters were treated at the screams of the cries of many of my fellow americans about this being somehow an illegitimate election we have all that process before we worry about the political futures of any of these republicans these shows are for here it's not to speak out as this want to be dictator of donald trump move us closer and closer to a closer closer to an autopsy this is

a democracy that he's never respected and i look at the words that sent her mitt romney in this moment to be confident because i believe that he is one of the leaders and i don't really care if they're republican or democrat or independent right now i'm looking for words that will lead us forward and i think when you say it plainly i think when when mitt romney very plainly said that these riots are beyond acceptance and he called it what it was an insurrection by the president was incited by the president the united states that needs to land on our hearts and minds and help us as a nation move forward from what is just a shocking and jarring assault on our democracy this was a literal assault on our democracy these people should not be spared the full within and the full weight of the law should come down on them what happens to the republican party is doesn't matter right now it's of no consequence this is a trump likud party it's a party that's been remade this president's image she has 2 weeks to go i hope the

cabinet does the right thing and assembles and sets this president is not fit to lead he's incapacitated because even in the video that he put out on national television yesterday he still called it a functional election i'm the mother. to their young children who are not even yet growing and the present united states either reminds me of my children the very fact that he pushes things to the limit only to see how far he can get and is forced to apologize we don't have leaders in the republican party right now and unless they're willing to speak out like senator mitt romney congressman adam kinzinger i look forward to them assembling but i'm not willing to sit here and have a conversation about their future because the fact is they have a lot of reconciliation they need to do with black and brown americans in particular because the president's words i remember i remember them quite well and not to make this about thriller but it is heart very very hard to not make it about color and i will say those words last summer when the shooting starts a shooting starts these people have to want to lead us into the future i look

forward to so many of them being primaried and out of office in the future jill i want to ask you about the work that you did in georgia because you know after the election in early november when it was declared that there was going to be a runoff many pundits many analysts in automatically believed that that meant that the republicans were going to win those races it was very unlikely the democrats were going to end when those senate seats ultimately you put in a lot of work you and other activists and organizers and i want to just ask what kind of work had to be done in order to ensure this victory how difficult was it. yes thank you for recognizing the hard work that that in the fact that many of us are attempting to rest right now in spite of all that's going on and i want to name that many organizations came together banded together in the past month to be

able to reach as many voters as possible and this work obviously is built on decades and decades of work that has been done by led by black women and black people but has been done largely in part by people of color in the state of georgia l.g.b. people people who come from immigrant and brought backgrounds in this state and so this is sort of a combination on the electoral side of what we have seen as a growing movement for justice and georgia and this work was grueling we know that going into this run i asked that it was said to be on mike lee that we would actually see a democratic victory in spite of all of the many victories that we seen in 2020 and that we've seen in our movement in terms of empowerment and our people coming together and just showing a sense of solidarity and fortitude that we've never seen before in spite of the

most difficult circumstances we knew that an electoral victory was was told to be unlikely and so we knew that we one had to come together and polish an an alliance we knew that every single organization whether it was a c. 4 a pac a c 3 if it had a bit of it had a membership if they had people and relationships in georgia that we needed them to be on the team and so we needed them to have a platform and so we are those are many of our allies across the country celebrities other politicians other people who are just on. an aside just this country gathered to actually give a platform to georgia organizers now this is something that we don't often see for organizers especially the letter organizers based in the south because of this turn it into right off the south the us south as unelectable as unflappable

as a backwards region where there's a conservative stronghold and so what we're seeing happen in georgia and what we're going to others may happen in georgia was not just a victory for joe biden it calmly harris it was not just a victory for her senator let's rafael why not and join us our but it was a victory for our movement because we were able to show that we reveal to beat the odds and we did it by tapping into the relationships that we already have my organization some power has been building relationships with organizations and people in the state of georgia since the 1990 s. me been working and sweating all wrapped sweating on our brow to meet as had been for decades we also were able to tap into the resources that are available to us and we use that people power and i want to say that this moment is historic. not just because of the outcome not because only because raphael warnock the president

senator from georgia and the south not just because our south is the youngest person elected to the senate is it joe biden was elected from delaware but this is a historic moment because we were able to show that when voter suppression is combat it we were able to show that when people are power and when they have the resources that they need particularly people in the south when they have the resources and the platform that they need to be able to use their voice and to be able to only power that the tired of progress the tide of justice and the entire political should jet business in is steered in a different way it completely changed and so i want to take that into the future because we need georgia organizers knew that we believe but what the rest of the nation didn't know was that this can continue to happen but we have to show up in
