close to january 20th as possible as should be no vacancies at state defense and treasury and homeland security and we will remain in this dark winter of pandemic and with the economic crisis that is deepening and we have no time to lose with regard to the entire team considered to december jobs report released today the anxiety and fear of the women and men out there reminds me of when president obama were sworn in during the great recession of 2009 the december jobs really this december jobs report shows millions of americans are still hurting through no fault of their own we lost another 140000 jobs the 1st negative jobs report and so height of the pandemic in the spring. more people more people have just lost a job while many have been out of work for
10:06 pm
a long time and the ongoing gap between black latino and black and latino unemployment remains much too large that gap and in many ways the jobs report is a pandemic report for the pandemic regime people are losing work and losing hope the hospital industry restaurant bars lost more than 270 should be 372000 jobs state and local governments are slashing jobs $28000.00 local educators lost their jobs just last month in the midst of this pandemic there are millions of people out of work unable to pay their rent or their mortgage they're waiting in line for hours and to get money to get food from a food bank think of this the united states of america people are lined up for miles of their automobiles waiting to get
10:07 pm
a mail put on the table to feed their family and they're left staring at the ceiling so many unable to sleep worried will they have their health insurance wondered if they'll be ok the bottom line is the jobs report shows we need to provide more immediate relief for working families and businesses now now not just help to get the other side of this painful crisis but a larger purpose to avoid a broader economic cost that exists out there that will happen due to long term unemployment hunger homelessness and business failings. but by acting the vast majority of leading economists suggest that that's what we need to do to revive the economy in fact economic research confirms that we're conditions like the crisis today especially with such low interest rates taking immediate action even with
10:08 pm
deficit finances going to help the economy long term and short term reduce current in the workforce increase growth and reduce our national debt burden fair to act will have the opposite effect i've said before the bipartisan covert relief package passed in december was a very important step but just a downpayment next week i'll be here with you all laying out the groundwork for the next covert economic relief package that meets the critical moment of our economy and our country we face at the moment for example vaccines give us hope but the rollout has been a travesty this will be the greatest operational challenge the greatest operational challenge we will ever face as a nation we're going to need billions of dollars to get the vaccine some of vile into someone's arm the vaccination for millions of americans are also going to need
10:09 pm
tens of millions of dollars to help reopen our schools and rope with them safely state local tribal communities need tens of billions of dollars to keep educators police officers firefighters and other 1st responders and public health workers on the job we need more direct relief flowing to families small businesses including finishing the job of getting people the $2000.00 a relief direct payment $600.00 is simply not enough when you have to choose between paying rent putting food on the table keep your lights on i also hope. that democratic controlled house and senate will raise the odds of prompt action on increasing the minimum wage i've long said that we need to reward work not just wealth in this country people of both parties now recognize it's time to raise the minimum wage so hard working people are now at least $15.00 an hour minimum no one
10:10 pm
no one should work this millions are doing today 40 hours a week at a job and still live below the poverty line they're entitled to at least the $15.00 minimum wage for our folks big focus also been small businesses and how to correct the current administration's failures to get relief to main street small businesses that are most in need mom and pop stores are the backbone of the economy and they're also as you all know they're the glue that holds communities together and holds on to get there but today more than one in 4 small businesses are not open and these 400000 are closed for good as the month goes by a 3rd of black owned businesses and more than a 5th of latino and businesses and more than
10:11 pm
a quarter of native american owned businesses have less than one month of reserves to cover expenses previous months of economic from previous rounds of economic relief last year helped millions of small businesses stay afloat and keep employees in the payroll but there are clear problems black and brown own small businesses had less access to that relief mom and pop shops were often the last in line while big well connected businesses jumped in front of the line and got more relief and got a faster and in every turn this administration the chop administration. it has undermined accountability for every tax dollar spent weakening oversight fire inspector generals so it's no surprise an independent watchdog found that tens of thousands of in eligible companies receive relief they should not have including from fraud and abuse siphoning off support for their
10:12 pm
a small business is there the are those that needed so badly but the good news is that the relief package passed last month provides additional aid to small businesses and workers but as i said from the beginning the need to make sure that relief and future relief reaches everyone who needs it we need to do more these relief dollars will start to flow quickly potentially while the current administration is still in office and they may send out money that they won't have any control over but for what for what we have to control need control over i want to be very clear what my priorities are for distributing this emergency aid swiftly and equitably our focus will be on small businesses on main street that aren't wealthy and well connected but are facing real economic hardships through no fault of their own our priority will be black latino asian and
10:13 pm
native american on small business and women owned businesses and finally have an equal access to resources needed to reopen to rebuild but we're going to make a concerted effort to help small business in low income communities in big cities small towns rural communities that have faced systemically barriers to relief think of the mom and pop owner with a couple of employees who can't pick up the phone and call a banker who doesn't have a lawyer or an accountant to help them through this complicated process. to know if they're even qualified or who simply didn't know where where this relief is available in the 1st place we were 3 is down we're trying to bring we brought to detroit back office ladies as we saw in this morning's jobs report restaurants bars and hospitality industry been slammed by this virus we're going to direct relief to those businesses and others that have been so badly hit hit the hardest we owe them
10:14 pm
that support tell them get through the other side of this crisis and i promise you we will investigate and prosecute waste and fraud in these programs so that money goes to the companies that deserve it and we use it to help their employees and their communities when the president when my president president obama asked me to handle implement the recovery act along with don they'll be a great deal we invest in more than $800000000000.00 in our economy to help recover rebuild and less than 2 thirds of one percent waste fraud abuse occur we know how to do this you know how important predictability and clarity are to small businesses from day one this is ministration work to ensure the small businesses and financial institutions in every community understand the rules for these programs and resources available to them where they can turn for technical
10:15 pm
assistance if they need we will have navigators to help guide them through each step of this process until the money they need is in their bank account and to the lenders participate in these programs you should move quickly without the lead to began extending relief but i urge you not to do not disabuse these fun. not as you mean not not to disperse these funds in the same and equitable way you have in the past here's my commitment in return we'll make our our expectations of you crystal clear the banks so that you can quickly that could have believed live relief to the communities that you serve unlike it's been happening in many places the bottom line is we're in the midst of the most economic unequal economic and jobs crisis in modern history and congress these the act as
10:16 pm

10:19 pm
how union workers have been holding this country together during this crisis health care workers keeping a hospital safe clean in effect and efficient time and public service workers fighting against budget shortfalls to keep communities afloat. port workers car our warehouse workers folks keeping our air and rail systems running they're literally what's keeping us going and they deserve a secretary labor who knows how to build their power as workers who knows that when i say our future will be made in america it will be a future built by american workers a future with historic investments in infrastructure clean energy manufacturing and so much more that's going to create millions of good paying jobs martino's worker power means not just protecting the right to unionize but encouraging unionization
10:20 pm
collect the bargain the fair labor standards act way back didn't say then just say you could have used as said the government should encourage it the formation of unions it also means protecting pensions ensuring worker safety increasing the minimum wage ensuring workers are paid for the overtime they've earned like we fought for in the obama biden ministration that this administration is weak in making sure that we have a trade policy where for every decision we make unions are at the table focused on winning good jobs for american workers this is one of the most important departments to me i trust merrill's and i'm honored he accepted but i also want to say i did give serious consideration of nominating my friend bernie sanders to this position i'm confident he could have done and could have done
10:21 pm
a fantastic job i giving him no more passionate devoted ally the working people in this country but after tuesday's results in georgia give me democratic control of the united states senate and a tie vote bernie and i agreed matter i burnished we can't put control of the senate at risk on the outcome of the special election for mom. and he agreed we couldn't take that chance we also discussed how we'd work together travel the country together helping marty meeting with working men and women who feel forgotten left behind in this economy we agreed that will work closely on our shared agenda of increasing worker power and to protect the dignity of work for all working people i want to thank bernie 1st continued friendship and leadership i look forward to us working together along with martin and he thinks i made a good choice for administrative

isabel we lead a critical mission not only to rescue small businesses and crisis but to provide the capital to entrepreneurs across the country so they can innovate create jobs and help lead us into recovery i'm grateful and she accepted the called to serve in washington for deputy commerce secretary nominee and i have to admit you good loyal great friend don graves. don is a long time a trusted advisor he was there at the treasury department during the depths of the great recession helping small businesses and weather the storm and stay afloat when president obama asked me to lead the effort to get to charge out of bankruptcy and off its back and on its feet again he said i can take anyone in the ministration on my team to do it full time so i went to the treasury department a task don to come over and work for me and work on full time it was the best
10:24 pm
decision i've made in that effort i'm not sure how he thinks about that but i think it was a bess's and i never did a great job work with the city officials state officials on its road to recovery and by the way it's the little things it's good to know what's happening on the ground remember how we threw the issue about the number of buses and lights street lights and what it gets down to the nitty gritty and what has to be done we found out the detroit had a lot of qualified people but during the great recession almost everyone who knew how to program and the thing left and when we finally got it back on its feet again we found out there wasn't anybody left to know how to turn on the street lights literally run the sewer to power so now we've got an outfit to command and we said find us the height some high tech people like a backlog of $5355.00 people they all happened to be women
10:25 pm
most were minority none had more than a high school degree and a quarter of them only had a ged and i remember even our very liberal friends we told were doing this i said i like. i guess what and 14 week was a 14 week program they were taught how to program they were taught how to do it all they ended up putting the city back and seat every one of them left after that time because one of the graduation. lowest starting salary of my recollection is correct was 49000 dollars the highest 104000 point is give people a chance americans can do anything given a shot they also help me lead our national strategy to clip workers in the skills they need for a good paying job in the 21st century in health care i.t. clean energy dense manufacture and so much more he was there to help me launch the national cancer moon shot and marshal the full resources of the federal government
10:26 pm

10:27 pm
and done what i'll do is i'll come back and answer some questions thank you. floyd from we've just been hearing from president elect joe biden the message of reassurance essentially from him focusing mainly on the state of the economy obviously there's been this outrage in washington after approach breached the capitol and democrats are very obviously considering their options for impeachment they're arguing that trump is a threat to be need to be removed from office and. prevented from ever running for office again though they are trying to decide on how that might happen but here in wilmington delaware joe biden choosing to focus on the economic challenges facing the country he seemed to say that his priorities will be to tackle the immediate financial needs the urgent financial needs of households and businesses and then going on from that develop a longer term solution to foster jobs growth and protect vulnerable workers so the priority will be black latino and asian businesses now kristin salumi is following
10:28 pm
all of this she is in wilmington in the state of delaware and of course these remarks from joe biden coming after a grim final jobs report of 2020 saying that they have been over 100000 job losses so a very difficult year because of the pandemic stranglehold on the on the economy in the 140000 jobs lost in december chris and. absolutely and as you say that was the focus of his remarks he did start by expressing sympathy for the family of the police officer who was killed succumbed to his injuries that were sustained in the attack on the capitol but choosing instead not to address the issue of donald trump choosing not to attend his inauguration and breaking with that tradition not to address plans to move forward with impeachment proceedings in congress even though we're hearing that nancy
10:29 pm
pelosi plans to talk to the vice president or to the president elect later today and said as you say concentrating on the job of getting his cabinet filled and he announced today that he has now named all of the members for his cabinet and called on the senate to make a prove all of those nominations as soon as possible stressing the need the dire need for many families in the united states that jobs report you mentioned 140000 jobs lost in this report it's the worst jobs report since april the only shedding of jobs since that time this as a result of the resurgence of the pandemic the people being hit the hardest by those job losses are low income workers people in the restaurant industry hotels retail teachers he talked about teachers being laid off and the need for more stimulus so he is clearly focused on assembling his team and hitting the ground
10:30 pm
running when he is anon curated on january 20th but all of that of course being overshadowed by the scene that is playing out in d.c. regarding president been concerns about whether or not he will go peacefully let's get to that now thanks very much kristen salumi in wilmington delaware alan fischer following developments from the white house and joe biden that with a message of equality and fed distribution of wealth and meanwhile the pressure is mounting for president trump's removal from office allan. and for others as well let's start with president trump certainly looks as if the impeachment proceedings are going to go ahead in congress early next week with a number of congressmen and women willing more sions of impeachment against the president when they get the 2 thirds in both houses highly unlikely the leader of the republicans in the house say this is not the sort of thing that the country needs to be dealing with 12 days before the end of the trump presidency.
