al-jazeera bringing the news and current affairs that matter to the. al-jazeera. ready. social media giant twitter permanently suspends u.s. president donald trump's account citing a risk of fueling further violence. down in jordan this is out as iraq live from doha also coming up a group of democrats dropped articles of impeachment against president trump accusing him of inciting insurrection. is more and more confident. presidents in the history of the united states of america joe biden says trump is unfit for office but the president elect says his priorities are the coronavirus
6:01 am
pandemic and economic growth. and kim jong un says the u.s. is his country's biggest enemy and should drop its all star policy is to improve relations. donald trump's personal twitter account has been permanently suspended it comes 3 days after his supporters stormed the u.s. capitol leaving 5 people dead well the u.s. president used his account to express his personal views often controversially as well as to announce major policy decisions with a social media platform is citing the risk of further incitement of violence by the president related to the upcoming inauguration it also gave examples of times trump's posts sparked an incendiary response by his supporters meanwhile a group of democrats as drafted formal charges of misconduct to be presented next week and that could mean trump becomes the 1st ever u.s. president to be impeached twice president elect joe biden has refused to say
6:02 am
whether he'd support any move to impeach donald trump he is not fit to serve he's not fit to serve is one of mostly competent presidents in the history of the united states of america. and so the idea that i think he shouldn't be out of office yesterday is not the issue the question is what happens with 14 days left to go or 30 days left to go so i think it's important to get on with the business get him out of office the quickest way that that will happen is a species sworn in 20 years what action happens before or after that is a judgment for the congress to make well biden also commented on trump's decision not to attend his inauguration saying it was one of the few things they both agreed on will be the 1st president in 150 years not to attend the ceremony well gable is on the joins us live now from washington d.c.
6:03 am
gave the twits a has now deleted tweets from the post account as well as suspending trump's personal accounts how is this all playing out. yeah twitter's really going after trump i mean it started over an hour ago when they completely deleted his personal account as we've been reporting here over 88000000 followers he had that was his primary personal account that he used to communicate as you mention communicate. various personnel changes at the white house foreign policy decisions but increasingly over the coming past months and weeks he's really been also tweeting misinformation and information that is misleading or flat out wrong as well as tweeting are we retreating conspiracy theories that have been debunked i think that's what was really starting to bother twitter a lot but clearly it was according to twitter also very much the tipping point was the riots at the capital on wednesday that in
6:04 am
a statement from twitter they said that it was trump's partially trump's tweets at least that help and site that and that's why they shut down that account but then trump posted to the potest account that's an account to p o t us president of the united states account with a little over 30000000 followers and then then twitter immediately. deleted those tweets and just locked that account didn't didn't shut it but just locked it that's the official president's account the president had states that accounts run by the u.s. government but trump has access to it and then that will be turned over to joe biden on january 20th after that trump posted to team trump twitter account with about 3000000 followers that's his one of his campaign twitter accounts and then after he posted a message there twitter immediately shut down that account completely well you're following all that i mean it's basic been a cat and mouse game between twitter and trump all night bottom line here is trump did send out a message to journalists
6:05 am
a statement if you will and in he said that twitter is trying to stifle spirit free speech and he also said that they're trying. twitter is trying to silence him and his supporters bottom line though is this is a dramatic step by twitter because unlike temporarily shutting his account or adding warnings to some of his tweets in this case they simply closed it his account and they say permanently yeah gavan away from the twitter wars i guess i mean house democrats say they're now putting together of impeachment against trump what's been the response to all of this. yeah we'll have to find out probably on monday the response because that's when it's expected to be taken up in the house of representatives this is the articles of impeachment this is just a draft that has not been released publicly it's just been leaked to journalists it's important to note that this draft has not yet been formally approved by house
6:06 am
speaker nancy pelosi nevertheless it's an important document that was leaked and in the draft impeachment documents it says it accuses trump of high crimes and misdemeanors for inciting insurrection and willfully made statements that encourage imminent lawless action at the capitol and also says that trump has demonstrated he will remain a threat as long as he's allowed to stay in office it's expected that the house is expected it is expected to take up these articles of impeachment as early as monday it's unclear if they'll be able to actually vote on impeachment before trump leaves office in 12 days that's just simply don't know if they get it done in that amount of time or if it will even pass the house and senate with 2 thirds majority that it would need nevertheless aside from the articles of impeachment they were expecting next week trump is receiving more pressure to step down even some in his own party
6:07 am
the latest person on friday evening was republican senator senator lisa murkowski from the state of alaska she said trump should step down immediately in his words he is no longer fit to serve out the rest of his term as president so this is a president in the final weeks or days of his presidency and he is isolated at the white house by all accounts most of his core aides have almost abandoned him and he's very much getting calls to step down so far calls that he has refused to heed are as i gave them is on the line for us there in washington d.c. gave thanks for that. well president trump has had a tumultuous relationship with twitter for many months on may 26th twitter fact checked trump for the 1st time highlighting his tweets as potentially misleading that california was using 1000000 ballots to rig the election twitter said that it
6:08 am
wouldn't delete messages but it would add labels to give them context well i'm a $29.00 twitter i added a label to trump's tweet that it glorifies violence after he threatened that looters will be shot during protest of the death of george floyd they're not generally 7 after trump supporters stormed capitol hill it locked his account for 12 hours and force the removal of 3 of its tweets saying it was due to a risk of violence well jim anderson is c.e.o. of social flow he says the liability of tech firms for what users post on social media is going to be a major issue going forward. under the u.s. law the tech platforms like twitter have effectively a safe harbor against whatever contents putting out a being put out on their platform as long as they adhere to a certain minimum set of rules they are not legally responsible for what people put whether it be the president of the united states or anybody else that has been the subject of much discussion and debate and i think and the incoming congress you know once we get past the inauguration and the new congress takes that c section
6:09 am
230 the liability reform is going to be one of the top issues of discussion and it really is a very polarizing issue because the democrats think that the tech companies should do more to censor or this kind of content traditionally republicans have said no you don't have any right at all to try to censor or mute content on from the right and so they're very different perspectives do you think this could lead to some kind of litigation from donald trump and his followers and what could he do in retaliation to some of these past forms facebook twitter that have suspended him does he have the power to do anything within the next 12 days. will sort of certainly litigation anybody can file a lawsuit about anything so i suppose that's possible successful litigation highly doubtful i think there is you know probably a concern that could he issue an executive order within the next 12 days that he's president of the united states could he you know try to take steps using the executive branch branch to do things i think you know you know what one of the things that's very different today than it was say tuesday or monday is given what
6:10 am
happened in the march on the capital and the violence and the deaths that happened there i think his republican support is very very nervous and so whether it be his his advisors and we've seen you know tremendous number of you know resignations or consideration of resignations you've got the congress who is who is sort of a a check on the presidency under our constitutional system so i think he's got a lot less latitude in the eyes of those folks now whether that actually restrain his behavior you know that's what i think everybody you know we'll have to wait and see. well president elect joe biden says those who stormed the capitol building on wednesday should be regarded as terrorists he's calling for them to be prosecuted and should be treated as they're bunch of thugs insurrectionist white supremacist and i semites 6 and there's not enough i mean c'mon you know these shirts there were these are a bunch of thugs thugs and they're terrorist domestic terrorists and that'll be a judgment for the the justice department to make as to what the charges should be
6:11 am
but the fact is they should be prosecuted and should be prosecuted the difference here is this had the active encouragement of a city president of the united states and the way in which the breakdown in security occurred needs to be thoroughly investigated well karen greenberg is from fordham university school of law we spoke to her about what was missed this week and what's changing. the worry in particular has to do with the run up to the inauguration on january 20th and the question is were they talking about and are they talking about mounting some kind of other demonstration i mean if you think about it there were somewhat like 40000 people they think earlier this week who knows how many and they're worried about could come in the inauguration so i think the idea is if there is no top person opinion pinpointing what to do and blasting it out that makes it a little bit safer you know there was
6:12 am
a lot of talk running up to earlier this week talking about what might happen on the day congress was supposed to approve the presidential vote and it happened and yet they weren't ready and so the question is you know can we take precautions now to make sure it doesn't happen again knowing that there were going to be people assembly is very hard to say we're going to have to get to the bottom of it was it that the police were told the capitol police were told do whatever you can not to confront them so that it will reduce violence or where they told what were they part of something broader in terms of breaching the perimeter of the capitol and so we don't know and we don't want to make any you know conclusions but there are a lot of questions that i think that the one force made intelligence and military has been ramped up in terms of being aware and vigilant and i think everybody may pay attention you know where they should be paying attention on wednesday north
6:13 am
korean leader kim jong un says the united states is his country's biggest enemy and has threatened to expand his nuclear arsenal he made the comments at a meeting of the ruling party congress can said the u.s. must withdraw its hostile policy towards north korea if it wants to establish new relations rob mcbride is following this for us from solve. there has been an awful lot of talk about the developing nuclear program of course the last few years with all of this summit diplomacy that's been going on between north korea south korea and the united states we have played down from north korea any talk of the development of nuclear weapons where latin it now seems to be in the past because we've had very detailed sections about where the nuclear strategy is up to where north korea and the takeaway seems to be from kim jong un that nuclear weapons remain as far as north korea is concerned they key to its survival its development of nuclear weapons is very much into linked with developments in its relationship with with washington and it does seem to indicate possibly
6:14 am
a return to the old ways the old acrimony before several years ago it does seem as though the trump here is now at an end of the north korea doesn't place much store in what might come from a new buy didn't ministration we have seen a suspension of the past couple of years of these large as far as north korea is concerned provocative military exercises between u.s. and south korean forces well may well be the case and you abide the ministration will reintroduce the spring exercise between u.s. and south korean forces which always causes a hostile reaction from north korea so we wait and see and north korea waits and sees just what the policy will be from the ministration when it comes in at the end of january time for a short break here not just here when we come back warnings from the white house coronavirus task force that there could be a fast spreading u.s. variant but it's 50 percent more transmissible and full steam ahead how bangladesh

a ship building industry is staying afloat despite the economic downturn and stay with us. the last of the proper storm system is on its way out through the u.s. the previous one is just saying goodbye to eastern canada and the next one is coming in only slowly from the pacific so we see what's left over afterwards as cold air has been swept down the temptress throat and extreme for the most part but they are on the low side when you look at the southern states for example little a snow still to come i think on saturday the forecast for new orleans of 10 degrees is a big disappointment it should be 70 and it's got a cold wind as well no showers until we get to monday and that will be a change of fortune to once again to read what last happened we had one day of the

storm system only a couple days ago which gave light tornadoes in texas well the same system more cynicism is building up again wolf in the south come from the north snow in between yet it's going to be cold snowy in parts of texas at the same time california is enjoying the sunshine for the most part. now whenever you throw a cold front out of the u.s. it tends to push up the showers in cuba and the bahamas and it feeds more crowd into was honduras or if you like nicaragua and these 2 countries along with costa rica and panama could be pretty wet this weekend. for generations nomadic herders of rugged mongolia's clients be greasing the extreme weather is killing their stock forcing some to abandon tradition and move to the sea while an east investigates on al-jazeera.
6:17 am
al-jazeera where every. talk about her come out about top stories here at this hour u.s. president donald trump's personal twitter account has been permanently banned it follows the storming of the capitol building by his supporters on wednesday social media platform site of the risk of further violence particularly around you know gratian of joe biden in 2 weeks' time. is also facing the possibility of an unprecedented 2nd impeachment a group of democrats has dropped
6:18 am
a formal charges of misconduct to be presented next week using him inciting insurrection. a north korean leader kim jong un says the united states is his country's biggest enemy and has threatened to expand his nuclear arsenal speaking at a ruling party congress kim said the u.s. must withdraw its austar policy if it wants to establish a new relation. the united states hits a new record for corona virus infections on friday with nearly 290000 new cases its top infectious disease expert is warning the number of deaths on new cases is likely to keep rising and coming president joe biden says he has a plan to speed up back the nation's robin reports. seeking to speed up the lagging nationwide vaccination effort president elect joe biden plans to release nearly all of a little doses of vaccine rather than holding supplies back for 2nd doses vaccines
6:19 am
give us hope but the rollout has been a travesty both approved vaccines from pfizer of biotech and moderne require 2 injections weeks apart the trip administration has been holding back about 50 percent of the nation's supply to provide those booster shots biden harris transition team officials say biden will use emergency wartime powers when he takes office to ramp up vaccine production and ensure that 2nd doses will be available as of thursday only 5900000 vaccinations had been administered even though 21000000 doses have been shipped and millions more remain in government hands governors have complained of inadequate supplies we don't control the vaccine supply it's all done federally and then we get
6:20 am
a proportionate amount. what we get we have to get into people's homes. states including arizona maryland and michigan have mobilized their national guards to help with the vaccination efforts of particular concern are the more infectious covert 19 variants spreading in the u.k. and south africa and now present in the united states they are much more transmissible than other strains this variant has the potential to throw jet fuel on a already dangerous situation and the reason for that is this something of a turbo charged version of the virus in the sense that it's a lot more contagious scientists in texas announce that antibodies from people who received the pfizer vaccine were effective in repel in the new strains under laboratory conditions in more economic fallout from the pandemic the u.s.
6:21 am
government says employers cut $140000.00 jobs in december the decline reflects the recent spike in covert cases and restrictions on businesses intended to contain the pandemic and with another post holiday spike expected economists say january's numbers are likely to be a little better robert oulds al-jazeera may no reports out of the usa the white house had 19 task forces warning of a new and more contagious variant of corona virus that it believes the mutation maybe 50 percent more transmissible and behind a recent surge in infections let's bring in judy fisher she's an associate research professor at the georgetown university medical center and joins us live from alexandria virginia julie good to have you back on the program so the white house task force is warning that maybe this fos putting us variants have covered 9000 how significant is this and how has it been discovered. so there hasn't been any
6:22 am
evidence put forward to show that there is such a very and it was one explanation that was given in the task force report to explain the rapid increase in the number of cases that has been seen over the holidays but it hasn't been backed up with any data showing that there is actually such a variance spreading rightly in the us and if it is true though julie i mean how much could this variant be responsible end for this this huge surge in infection rates we've seen across the u.s. over the fall and winter months so right now without any evidence that there is a us variant spreading it looks like there are many explanations for the increase in the number of cases hospitalizations and deaths that we're seeing including the movement of people from place to place moving and interacting with people not of their households not taking some of the basic precautions and some mass gatherings events that could be super spreader events that said we do know that there have
6:23 am
been variants introduced in the u.k. there detected in the u.k. that are spreading and that do appear to be highly transmissible so it is certainly a warning that this virus is changing that this virus acquires mutations and that they can have an effect on transmissibility something we have to look for in the u.s. as well yeah that's an important point to make judy because officials in britain say the very end there could be 50 percent more transmissible if it has if it has the same effect in the u.s. how much more strain could that place then on an already stretched u.s. health care system. that is really the concern what we've seen in the u.k. and britain as well as more recently in ireland is that this strain which does appear to be as you said more transmissible is really causing a surge in hospitalizations and demand on the health care systems there in the us we are already at the highest point that we've seen during the pandemic and in terms of hospitalizations and pressure on our health care systems
6:24 am
a similar surge on an already strained system could push hospitals that are already beyond their capacity simply to the breaking point and increase the pressure on health care workers who are already have been working. for weeks and months now just a final quick question i'd like to squeeze in to you so then how does the u.s. mitigate against this variant i mean we've already seen millions of americans as you say refuse to wear face masks they refuse to social distance so what's the answer is it rapid vaccination the. getting the vaccines rolling out and ramping up the state programs so that there is sufficient is possible is certainly an important and key tool that we have the 2nd is really i think communicating how significant this increase in transmissibility is the the ability of this virus of the variant virus to spread more quickly means we have to take those precautions
6:25 am
and take them seriously and finally we need we need more widespread sequencing of the virus to understand where the variant is and whether it is spreading in the u.s. right now in the u.s. that kind of testing which helped discover the variant in the u.k. is really lacking behind many other countries and it is quite spotty jellyfish are always good to get your thoughts thank you very much for talking to al jazeera thank you thank you. meanwhile the u.k. reported more than 1300 coronavirus deaths on friday that's the highest daily number since the pandemic began london's mayor has now declared a major incident for the city as hospital struggle with the high number of cope with 1000 admissions sadique khan is warning that the british capital is that crisis point one in 30 people in london were infected with the virus in the weeks leading up to january 2nd. and the surge in cases is leading to growing calls for the english premier league to be suspended there were 40 positive results in the league's last round of week a testing that's more than double the previous weekly high the manager of newcastle

united is the latest to say he believes it's time for the game to take a break is difficult it could take give it to stop and of course it leaves people sick so i have to reassure look at their you know. financially it's right to play alone. but for me morally really it's probably wrong so you know are you disturbed that people want to see a game of football you know where just a little bit to catch it this is everybody else's pakistan's prime minister imran khan has accused a group of hazaar ashia demonstrators of blackmail as they continue their refusal to bury coal miners killed by eisel fighters the protesters a blocked a highway with coffins containing the bodies of 11 miners who were abducted from a remote mine in baluchistan province on sunday they're refusing to bury the dead until the prime minister agrees to meet with them to guarantee their safety. the united arab emirates will reopen its air and sea borders with qatar as part of

a u.s. backed deal saudi arabia the u.a.e. bahrain and egypt all agreed this week to restore ties with qatar after a 3 and a half year blockade qatar airways has already rerouted some flights through saudi space. bangladesh's shipbuilding industry had been thriving for a decade before the pandemic hit shutting down dockyards but a recent spike in domestic orders is keeping the industry afloat and providing much needed jobs. reports now from the outskirts of the capital dhaka. bangladesh has always been known as one of the world's leading ship demolition centers but it has also a long history of ship building dating back centuries and that's been recognised more and more after a layoff during the coronavirus lock down workers at this year are back and busy there are ships to be delivered and there is confidence here the industry has a bright future consistently growing domestic demand for ships in bangladesh both from government and private sector have held this industry to you know companies
6:28 am
state and worry that in short a span of time at least 10 years in this country are now you could see building facilities orders from the global market have slowed down but domestic demand has given new hope the shipyards are slowly coming back to life here and. out of the capital city it's difficult to here. in this. industry has managed to withstand the economic shock wave. unlike the ship breaking in the street the ship building industry has a much higher worker safety standards and compliance regime child labor is virtually nonexistent in major shipyards but safety issues still remain a concern in smaller unregulated shipyards where workers face the risk of injury and even that many workers say wait just could be better and there is a lack of job security as most work is on a contract basis but for others a job is
6:29 am
a job. i have been working here for 13 years now safety is pretty good reasonable but sometimes the salaries are paid a bit but in general it's not so bad the shipyards abroad. new opportunities around 200 chip building companies now employ nearly 30000 people however there is still no workers' union to fight for their rights. overall working conditions are good here the shipyard has all the required equipment so it makes work a bit easier but not all shipyards have such facilities and working conditions the director of this shipyard say it's not all smooth sailing and there are financial and other challenges ahead this has a huge potential for sea building and at the moment we also have we have the technology we have the manpower but we have been doing issues with the financial sector as well as we need some sort of government between ideation the that these

tools but we are gradually picking up bangladesh is a relatively small player in the global shipbuilding arena but with low cost labor and decades of experience industry experts believe the country could emerge as a major competitor in the market for small to medium size ocean going vessels tend to charge i'll just 9 gone. for a quick check of the headlines here on al-jazeera u.s. president donald trump's personal twitter account has been permanently suspended it comes 2 days after a mob of trump supporters encouraged by the president stormed the u.s. capitol building the social media platform citing the risk of further incitement to violence.
