things that people will revisit places. even when there are no international headlines. and really invest in them that's a privilege as a journalist. the u.s. house democrats introduced a motion aiming to impeach donald trump for his role in last week's attack on the capital. and with threats of paul protests the u.s. secret service will begin special security arrangements for the january 20th presidential inauguration earlier than planned. hello i'm adrian for the good this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up the outgoing trumpet ministration puts cuba back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism we'll have a live update from her about plus. i've got it out in

a city famed for its speed. of medical professionals costing dog days a hit it's called the 900 foot cliff. colleagues. we begin in the united states where the final days of president ronald trump's presidency are being marked with historic political action and unprecedented security challenges democrats in the u.s. congress have introduced an article of impeachment charging trump for inciting insurrection during last week's on rest on capitol hill of those as expected on wednesday a 2nd resolution urges the vice president to invoke the 25th amendment that would remove trump by declaring him unfit to hold office but the session was adjourned after a republican objection will be taken up again on tuesday outside of congress. the

f.b.i. is warning of armed protests in washington d.c. of all 50 states in the days leading up to joe biden's inauguration security is being stepped up a week earlier than planned but our national guard is deploying up to 15000 troops let's go live now to washington now to serious mike hanna is there for us mike talk us through what happened in congress today well adrian the democrats had been hoping that there would be no objection to a motion asking my pence to invoke the 25th amendment however there was an objection from a republican and therefore the democrats will now formally vote on the motion tomorrow evening demanding that mike pence call together as cabinet and invoke the 25th amendment removing trump from office however they are still going to go ahead to wednesday with a vote on end pietschmann so that will happen in the course of wednesday so
2:03 am
basically house democrats making very clear that they want to move very quickly on this and it would appear as well that they may be sending the articles of impeachment should it be voted on to the senate immediately rather than holding it back though that is not confirmed at this particular point adrian there's been another resignation from the president's cabinet of the f.b.i. mike warning of possible further violence not just there in washington but across the country and head of inauguration day. indeed yes well the acting homeland security secretary has now announced his resignation strangely enough chad will does not quote last wednesday's events as a reason for the resignation instead he refers to general events and also refer specifically to the fact that there have been court actions against his acting position president trump not having moved him for confirmation in the senate so certainly this is going to have a major impact because chad wolf as homeland secretary was going to be basically in
2:04 am
overall charge of the security arrangements throughout the inauguration period he's in direct control of the secret service for example now what we do know is that one of his last acts was be to extend that security period from the 2 days of the inauguration from beginning now immediately for 10 days so basically what will be happening is that the secret security secret service will be the point body in terms of maintaining security it will also be setting up coordination with other departments in the federal government along with the courses national guard that you mentioned up to $15000.00 national guard expected to be deployed over the next 10 days but the threat not only in washington according to the f.b.i. in all 50 state capitals is the f.b.i. in an internal memorandum they are threats of violence during this inauguration period so certainly very very great concern indeed particularly now with the

homeland secretary even in an acting capacity having resigned he will be handing over it would appear to the head of fever to control the homeland security department during this incredibly tense period and a serious mike hanna reporting live from washington mike many thanks indeed. rina shah is a republican strategist she joins us now via skype from washington good to have you with us again rita so another cabinet member resigns albeit the acting secretary of homeland security have those who've resigned done so out of principle or in order to salvage their reputations and political standing within the republican party. well perhaps it's a mixture of both and i think this is the moment where obviously one's loyalty to party and country work question and i'm a longtime country over party voter myself and i must say not having voted for president trump in either election 2016 or 2020 made me the culprit in today's
2:06 am
republican party people in the republican party label folks like myself as never trampers that was a label i never wanted i didn't want to identify myself as having had anything to do with this president but that was a label given to us they also said we had trumped arrangements in drum every time we war and about what violence in the future and we warned about the threat to the constitution what we saw happen last week in real time with people finding their morals finding their principles and remembering the very american values which have made this country prosperous and great for generations before i got here so i must say i'm a bit disappointed by these 11th hour resignations they don't mean much and i think we should hold to account all the folks that were part of the trumpet ministration and stood by silently as atrocities were committed the worst of which was last wednesday the nation is divided but so is the g.o.p.
2:07 am
how will that affect it electorally in the future out does the posse unite in the post trump era. you know i believe it's a bit premature for those conversations right now we have some pretty big lofty things ahead of us which is election secure i'm sorry excuse me and not to ration security also getting through to our fellow americans that this election was not rigged that there's no data to support that that assumption that notion that president trump pushed out there and decried that the election was rigged by democrats and that something was skewed against conservatives nationwide particularly in states where he fell short and lost to biden consequential states for him so there's there's a lot ahead of us i think the least to me is a concern of how the g.o.p. figures out how to move forward i think they can only move for the republican party if they remember that folks like myself lot lifelong conservatives sounded the
2:08 am
alarm and we chose to put country our party because we knew that threat that this president posed we knew he was never a conservative and that he was really not here to do the work of the american people nor that of republicans he's a person who has driven up the national deficit that's not very conservative the way he's handled trade the isolationist policies he's kept us on our feet and not in a good way and what we know now is that he incited violence so plainly he drove domestic terrorists to our nation's capitol building the very seat of our democracy so that he could possibly get his way what we need to do now is to figure out how dogs who enabled him senators and congresspeople alike members of both chambers are taught a lesson i fear though that it will take them to get to the electorial ballot box the ballot box i believe it's going to take electoral losses for these people to

finally wake up and realize that the g.o.p. must change course must course correct in order to remain a viable party always could still cheer when a many thanks indeed for being with us again really a shot there in washington. thank you some of the largest corporations in the u.s. suspending donations to republican lawmakers who are challenging joe biden's presidential victory they include telecommunications giant a.t.m. t.v. hotel chain marriott international and citibank bank of america and ford motor say that they will take recent political events into account before making future donations and big name companies like b.p. c.v.s. health exxon mobile targets say that they're reviewing donation policies melanie sloan joy is a former u.s. federal prosecutor attorney with expertise in government ethics she says that this will have a huge impact on the republican party. and we're seeing new companies added to the
2:10 am
list by the minute we've seen tar get federal express exxon mobile wal-mart delta all reconsidering their contributions and the american political system is run on campaign contributions without being contributions these members of congress will not be able to get reelected and it seems that these companies have decided it was finally time to take a stand i think there's probably been a great deal of disappointment in the past few days about how you republicans have really come out strongly against what happened at the capitol on wednesday they're not rallying around the need to either use the 25th amendment or impeach the president and there has been a lot of support pride republicans for senators josh holly and ted cruz who are the ringleaders of this effort in the senate and i think that we're now seeing the american business is saying enough is enough we need to stop this especially in light of the violence that we seem to be expecting now around the country in the
2:11 am
coming days as some companies have said they're just taking a pause they're going to be reconsidering their donations and this is the 1st quarter of a new cycle is often a slow time for donations anyway but on the other hand dow chemicals that they're not going to be giving anymore donations to anybody who supported the. has supported the effort to undermine president biden for the rest of this cycle for the rest of their term which means for members of congress 2 years and for senators up to 6 years so that's much longer period of time and we will see if other companies follow suit the social media and i put paula has now gone completely off line aside have become popular among trump supporters and as an apple and google only up on the platform citing a lack of cooperation a violent content by conservatives policy the size election the town longer than expected. a weather update next here on out to 0 then we'll take

a look at the likely impact on the diet humanitarian situation in yemen after washington brands hooty rebels terrorists. if you don't follow the rules we die a desperate plea from health care workers battling the coronavirus in mexico. hello once again welcome to another look at the international forecast it looks like a pretty quiet week across much of north america or i am pleased to say that said there is a little bit of wet weather just moving through the deep south just around louisiana mississippi some snow in the northern flank of that sweeps through as we go through chews day things quiet down but it quite nicely getting up to around 678 degrees celsius there from new york and for d.c. not too much going on across the central parts and most of the border into canada but so was the pacific northwest western canada they say alberta saying rain sleet

and snow strong winds are driving their way in across the oregon and washington state northern parts of california also seeing some of that wetter weather as we go on through where the stable make its way a little further east where it's all snow then coming in over the mountain states but elsewhere as you can see a slushy 5 to drive or some pleasant sunshine to have some shades weather i would say on the cool side but spotting sunshine to enjoy a fair bit of sunshine too into the camera band gazza think a cloud outbreaks of rain across the western side of the caribbean that weather system just pulling away from the southeast corner of the u.s. leaves a trailing front down across the yucatan peninsula some heavy rain coming into southern parts of mexico with the risk of flooding for some. madagascar a breathtaking tropical paradise. where its former protectors.

amendments declaring trump unfit to hold office the f.b.i. meanwhile is warning of protests in washington d.c. of all 50 states in the days leading up to joe biden's an operational security is being stepped up a week earlier than planned the national guard is deploying 15000 troops. and some of the largest corporations in the u.s. are suspending donations to republican lawmakers put challenging joe biden's presidential victory thing citibank a t. and t. and the marriott hotel chain. the u.s. state department has designated cuba a state sponsor of terrorism a statement from secretary of state mike pump a 0 said that cuba had repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism by granting safe harbor to terrorists in 2015 then president barack obama delisted cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism in order to normalize relations live to havana. augustan is there for us at what's been the reaction that this. there's been little
2:16 am
reaction from the government so far the cuban foreign minister has sent out a tweet predictably labeling the move super critical between doing a lot of for for your channel i'm going to step out and speak to some cubans. my house from when i speak to you right now and their reaction was cynical they don't believe that cuba is supporting terrorist groups any on the wells they do believe the fact that this reaction has been made has to do with domestic politics. i agree with the people i spoke to just a cop and on the streets and. a taxi driver i think this is a transparently this is transparently a move. motivated by domestic political political considerations 1st and foremost to rewards right wing cuban american voters in florida that the trump ministration for the last 2 years worked so hard to cover it and succeeded in getting their
2:17 am
votes trump won the florida largely because of a huge swing of support from cute americans on the cause of his one to cast response and also this is a piece of legislation that is intended to make it more difficult for the incoming biden administration to we normalize relations with cuba the cubans have made it plain that they that they would like to happen allies relations with the united states joe biden was part of. the ministration of many of the people on his transition team are involved without normalization and so anything that trump ministration can do to complicate matters is something that they. wake up and see today that they what they've done so this is the ground finale in terms of people policy but it's worth emphasizing how evidence free how devoid of factual basis the announcement is i mean if you read through the statement produced by the state department yes cuba does have. north americans who committed violence

it does. have spanish in colombia terrorist groups but this is all stuff that happened in the 1960 s. and seventy's. over the trump administration. terrorism has participated including even including even if you look at the. press release. that many thanks indeed at augusta and live in havana for the united states is also moving to designate evans who think movement which controls the capital and the country's main aid porters of foreign terror group who the officials have reacted saying that the trumpet ministrations policies and behavior instead resembles that of a terrorist the decision to back to blacklists the iran backed organization is expected to undermine peace negotiation efforts the us backed saudi led coalition has been fighting the group in yemen since 2015 it accuses the who tease of
2:19 am
launching attacks against civilian targets in saudi arabia of targeting major oil facilities well yemen was already the poorest country in the middle east before the war started it's since descended into the largest humanitarian crisis of all time the conflict has killed nearly a quarter of a 1000000 people over the past 6 years the united nations says that almost 10000000 yemenis are at risk of famine 80 percent of the population needs humanitarian aid and then there's the coronavirus pandemic which is adding strain to a devastated health system peter soles for is the syria yemen analyst at the international crisis group he says that most international supplies to yemen will stop sending anything now making a bad situation even worse for ordinary people. it's really difficult to say exactly what the impact will be we know several things 1st this is going to make working in yemen extremely difficult for international nongovernmental
2:20 am
organizations who are going to have to go through a lengthy process of legal review to work out whether or not they could be prosecuted for triggering what's known as the material support provision in the foreign terrorist organization designation basically all their work in yemen constitute material support to the earth is but the bigger impact arguably is for trade is businesses who bring food and other basic goods that are vital to yemen into the country yemen relies on imports for about 90 percent of its foodstuffs of this isn't a small thing and what we're being told today is that many traders have been talking to their banks to their suppliers abroad to insurers and that they're basically saying that until they have clarity on what this this means most major international firms will stop sending anything to yemen or working with yemeni companies importing goods into yemen the u.n.

already predicts that about 50000 people will be driven into the fan and in 2021 but that was before accounting for the impacts of this this designation and the impact that is likely to have if not it is definitely going to have on trade flows in into yemen so it's a pretty pretty dire situation local elections being held in eastern libya for the 1st time in nearly 70 is the vote is being supervised by the government based in the city of to brooke those running for office include 4 women and 4 candidates with special needs local elections in the western region controlled by the u.n. backed government in tripoli began last week. russia says that armenia and azerbaijan have agreed on a reconstruction plan for the disputed region of the goto kind of back president vladimir putin made the announcement after holding talks in moscow meeting also focused on restoring economic ties following decades of conflict this latest round of talks comes 2 months after

a russian brokered truce ended weeks of fighting that killed more than 6000 people to would use new stitcher should get in the way i consider today's meeting useful and of utmost importance because we have managed to reach an agreement and we have signed a joint statement on the development of the situation in the region i mean specific steps on building a konami ties and developing infrastructure projects i'm confident that the implementation of those agreements will benefit both the armenian and does of the shiny people and without any doubt will benefit the entire region consecutively it will also benefit russia's interests. the u.k.'s health system is under severe pressure from rising corona virus infections the health minister says that more than 32000 people are in hospital with covert 19 and the government is prepared to introduce tougher restrictions as

the chief medical officer said earlier today we are at the worst point in this pandemic and you can see that from this slide and from the increase in number of people in hospital so the n.h.s. more than ever before need everybody to be doing something right now and that something is to follow the rules and now i know there's been speculation about more restrictions and we don't rule out taking further action if it's needed but it's your actions now that can make the difference stay at home and please reduce all social contact that is not absolutely strictly necessary. south africa is closing some of its land borders until the middle of february the government's trying to reduce crowding as it battles a surge in coronavirus cases restrictions remain on public gatherings including funerals which the president has described as death traps but as robert adams reports now from cape town many surveys are being delayed anyway due to
