elections ignite fierce wyvil that will determine the future of this depleted and politically divided community. a microcosm reflecting the plight of a nation with venezuela a city with a leash on it jessica. i am fairly ok today on the strain landing at the fort out of the capital building in riots in the united states recent arrests of activists in hong kong and vaccine has to see in the global pandemic that was going on in the show if you have a comment or question you know what to do if you're on you tube jumping to the comment section and need to can be part of this discussion we start in the united states where people are still talking about what happened
7:34 am
a wednesday the washington d.c. well the events that took place here in washington d.c. at the capitol building on january 6th may have been a surprise for some for those of us that study terrorism and extremism it unfortunately wasn't so much of a shock we seen strong polarization taking place here in the united states in the past number of years which is she holds extreme views including conspiracy theories some of which have seeped into mainstream ideas as well as politics this is something that moving forward needs to be addressed to help reunite the country again with that being said those involved in the events at the capitol on wednesday need to be held accountable to send a strong message that the democratic system cannot be disrupted by intimidation and violence. by passing. that penny you will get it together. on wednesday when he finding out
7:35 am
well i just won't give you my perspective where i was on wednesday 1st right now i'm in the russell senate building before and wednesday i was in the cannon office building and we were told that there was a possible bomb and we had to get out the police rushed us out the door and much time when i got out the door just as the police locked it and kept people locked in for hours and what we saw was just a terrible wall of people descending on the capitol and i stayed as far away as i could i was still exposed to wafting tear gas so i was close enough to have that but i honestly didn't want to go into the crowd because we know how they feel about the media and they were attacking journalists left and right so i was a bit of a distance away but i saw the police trying to hold. back and shalini amazingly quickly but we know now as a city as day piecing things together it looks like there were about 4 people that kept members of congress from being either health hostage or attacked or
7:36 am
potentially killed by these rioters these. people and the house speaker the house speaker lobby there were 3 cops that basically held people back as they were punching through the glass around them to try and get to members of congress who were looking for the only exit they could find still and then decided side this mob rushes the stairs and the only thing there was one happy african-american officer there and if these people had turned to the right they were yelling where's the senate where's the senate if they had turned to the right and they are watching this video now they would be able to walk into an unlocked chamber of the senate you can see he sort of used himself as bait and they followed him up to the next set of stairs so they couldn't get into the senate so if you think about this it was literally. 4 people and their actions in the course of 2 to 3 minutes each made just trying
7:37 am
a absolute standing shocking event to occur as easily to the tragedy. very quickly the f.b.i. put out seeking. i want to say wanted cases like exactly how they they were at it so they were looking for these people who stormed into the capitol building you was a you could see some of them can you explain what they were sinking or what they were feeding how they were reacting because the country is divided right now about whether it was a good thing what happened on wednesday but whether it was a bad thing. ok well anyone who thinks it was a good thing is obviously just doraine just because it's the vision of democracy was attacked by lightly police officer was what appears to be beaten to death so no i don't think anyone can say there was anything. they came out of this i think there could be a lot of investigations how do you describe the mood of the crowd it was
7:38 am
a mixture and headed to how you mix these 2 together between joy and anger at what they saw as righteous anger they were show on it bashed italy proud of themselves they were cheering each other on there was i dreaded and challenged in graduate school about mob mentality i don't think i've ever actually seen it in person it was like a lecture of heat and passion over these thousands of people they were vial they were angry they said horrible things to us luckily and i did have security but luckily we weren't attacked because the feeling was there were such gross incompetence among the security officials that i truly felt at the time that if i looked more wrong at one of these people and the mob turned on us that nobody was coming to help. that they felt so clearly that they were on the wrong right side of history when in my opinion it was so clear that they are in fact on the wrong side . let me bring in. who we spoke to earlier he was really keen to find
7:39 am
out and to make sure that there were consequences for what happened don't say. anything less than impeachment and a coward words. are caprio and who were those who were and. are our. commitment. to our shared. made america where. america needs. to be that is the whole girls who were involved accountable. so there you hear anything. now to respond to that the way i've just read this to my friends and family is what happened here at the capitol is either the most
7:40 am
incredible case of incompetence or there's some sense of a conspiracy here because there was if there was a plan i couldn't tell that to you know i'd say it's capitol fell it a matter of minutes i mean that's just it's it's shocking and i've run out of all of the different words for it as far as accountability for president trump this week at the house of representatives will take a vote and they will have the majority simple majority to vote to impeach him then they're going to hold it for a 100 days so the senate can get about doing the business of confirming joe biden stop unease for cabinet positions and other positions and then it will happen is they'll give it to it when once they in that people work over the senate though there will be a trial now trump is going to argue you can't impeach a president who's gone longer in office there is legal precedent that says yes you can it is but done before about this trip to the secretary of or the $800.00 s. so if he has the money in the lawyers he could take it to the courts try and buy time that way it's it's we don't know which way the court's going to roll but if they rule that he can in fact have it impeachment trial then there is going to be
7:41 am
a problem for him tis for public internet a longer in charge of the senate members last time he was impeached they said oh we don't need to have any witnesses even though it's never been done in the history of the country before to have an impeachment trial that would dismiss they don't have that option now is chuck schumer will decide the process and they're going to be witnesses you see republicans saying if you do this we can't heal the country democrats are saying if you don't do this we can heal the country but keep in mind think about what might come out during the course of a trial republicans have been are on the record of standing with the president if it turns out that it's worse than we thought that we think. their past support is still very obvious and they have to run for reelection as for the criminals who did this they're already tracking them down there's a lot of critique of the of the police that they didn't arrest them into. and really looked like they were escorted him out of the building after giving them a casual tour those police officers the ones that you see on tape they're going to be held to account they're going to track down as many of these peoples they can
7:42 am
they have more than 40000 tips and it's only 3 days as event i don't even know who it is it's been a good working scoop and so that's what i think i thought they sounded a full day so full day didn't 4 days 1000 times. beach now going to prison. let me go to prison since i'm phyllis that people want a balanced so back america should learn a little less in a must still fits into ference in different countries elections there was a lot of shock and horror from overseas looking at what was happening on wednesday the crew impeachment will further to find the country terry coleman always a conspiracy come on it was all about racism on trump and he supports his spot but congress had a role when he always said this didn't just happen overnight. and no it didn't happen overnight and anyone who said that it could have seen this coming is absolutely apparently the only people not on twitter or reading newspapers we knew
7:43 am
that the and this is what i meant by incompetence or conspiracy. out where was the national guard i mean where was the plan i mean i supported during the day that there was a whole lot of capitol police officers have been everywhere i looked in the checked my badge before i got anywhere near the complex but then in retrospect you look at the plan and it was to put bicycle racks a few you know in a different places around the capitol in one of the spots there like 5 cabs guarding it and the new thousands of people were going to come so it just it if it's incompetent it's mind boggling these are people who handle big events and every part of the security plan was a business was a failure and so it. are you really that bad at your job or it was or something else at play i have no. obvious evidence or would be telling you about it but i think that's what they're really going to be focusing on the church going to try to
7:44 am
get to the bottom of it there's also a lot more we don't know who these people are who did this i mean lisa reporting that they found radios in 2 way communications a flash bangs they had weapons. in gym class or came out and said there's one place in the capital that has my name on it and that's my stretcher khalid believe they were right there they didn't go into that office but he said they sent out new to go to where i usually do my work at a mark location of the church and bang on the door in trying to get my staff in there so how did they know you were jim clyburn secret as well as and i mean my bigger point is i've come to the capital a lot over my dozen more than dozen years in washington and i've literally never once not gotten lost yesterday i got there on train any issues train journey into the building and if you asked me to find speaker's office i'd have to ask 42 people before i found it's a maze like structure there so there's just so much that doesn't add up. and i'm
7:45 am
just looking at a post that you posted. the day after the capitol building riots earn a couple police searching the grounds a day after the council writes new sense put up much more robust police presence threat today cracked the strain and put ses until about. the now what do you do about that it's now that there are people that feel that they can storm the capitol building now won't he. so generous it's very troubling but i think we need to really careful our spot so hard on the nerves are we need new domestic terrorism bill or need to increase the strength. or we need to overcome this with unity or bipartisanship might. all through those ideas very dangerous lastly we need to do is increase domestic surveillance these counterterrorism measures have been terrible historically or over valleys that
7:46 am
already most police muster in the united states or legitimacy of this and republicans have been encouraging this violence for the last few years. tani's is a cleansing sore as you know piecing together what happened. when sane enough for me is what would you say all the politicians in ny state should be sinking about in the next i don't think you're going to see new domestic laws i don't need and see massive reforms to the way the capitol police are handled even if the top 3 law enforcement people have already been fired or to a resign or they were going to be fired you're seeing a much different capitals j people are very worried right wing media has said it's not over january 17th we're going to storm the capitol again and the capitals across the country now you see security fences up around the capitol you have thousands of national guards troops its soldiers patrolling the capital that's unsustainable and i think the question is going to be how does this pan out for
7:47 am
donald trump he has activated should these right wing groups that his downfall they see as a call to arms if he's brought down if he's you know she's charged with crimes or make it all depends on what general trump does or does it is ok to all network and you know continue just stoke the flames of hate and bigotry we just we don't know but the most important thing i think is important i want to leave you with this is you can't fix a problem that you don't know exists and america many americans be blind to the fact that these right wing extremists search a true clear and present danger to the country and after the events of one say i don't think you can deny that for one mormon. had a cool hangout. thanks for joining us in the strain today my go from. to go from the united states to hong kong right activists recently happening rounded up by police amnesty international has something to say about their rights
7:48 am
as a hook. the government of hong kong is delivering a master class in had to strip people of their rights to freedom of expression and this latest crackdown is the starkest sign yet of how the new national security law is being weaponized to end any form of dissent against the establishment and one of the saddest things is the chilling effect that is having on people's right to participate in public life some of they start dictating trade social workers who are merely trying to help people in their communities but if there's one thing that we've seen is the resilience of the people of hong kong as their rights have been eroded so rapidly and it's essential that the world stands with them they feel it joins the strain today nathan it's good to have you how would you like to describe yourself to our international audience. i have carbolic a hot car and access to campaign for conspiracy. how would you explain the
7:49 am
recent arrests that have been happening in hong kong what is going on. so as they have gone on a on more than 50 political figures their homes are being wrecked and they are arrested under the national security law and are the reason why the government arrests at the is because they have participated in a primary that helps the pro-democracy camp to get the literacy in the legislature branch and our government thinks that if they get into the legislature and they will feed and our lot of the big boys and budgets of from the government are by doing so did across a today versus if x. so these people are they're just trying to use their constitutional rights to hold the government accountable but it is big brand and name of threatening the national security and now they are facing a mess among cannot see our life long sentence in following proceedings. now even i'm looking at a headline he's an op ed piece that he wrote just
7:50 am
a few days ago the world must be more to fight china's crackdown in hong kong what is there more that you are asking the well to do and what can they even do. well are. far more people in for activist campaigning for him comes through quickly more so you won't be looking forward to a group to transfer power to or even global cooperation in terms of coping china's author a tarion expansion and it's really clear that that is your original i mean hong kong is just a sign of expansion and that aggressiveness is authoritarian nature so far as well written or careful or moral sanctioning some academy in place to china and hold hands of fish else and also we need to craft a policy that all the global leaders democratic countries leaders sit again out and if they sent our navigator waste do on counter that otherwise our democratic values
7:51 am
will be happily damaged and all it will change and all the attacks on democracy from these off their territories who continue to rice. and even i'm really intrigued by your reaction to the spokesperson for the foreign ministry in china have a listen to that's what i'm doing urge the u.s. to stop interfering in china's internal affairs or harming china's interests in undermining china u.s. relations china will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty and security interests and the u.s. will pay a heavy price for its wrongdoing. nathan. what is not now reaching so often see all ages range not after hours it is about how we can save up democracy and democratic values that we all share we are seeing like 50 figures now arrested and put on trial because they wanted to exercise constitutional rights and it is. a tax on our system and if we all share our global
7:52 am
audience and and people in the usa new janet in elsewhere so i think when our autocracy authoritarian jihadists are turning blue democracy and defending the cost of the projects of preserving your own democracy one defeat the threats of. the last thank you very much for joining the stream today really appreciate your perspective thank you thank you so much and finally well all of these big news stories are happening we cannot forget that we're in the middle of a global pandemic there are hundreds of radicals assume or in some parts of the world order but some people do not want to take them this is a vaccine has cincy they couldn't have a system that soon hesitancy is when people have questions about vaccines they want to know is it safe does that work do i really need them
7:53 am
a lot of people have these questions and when they start to look around line our target or their friends they get a lot of confusing information but we need to build confidence in their axioms because we are all me back scenes and the only way we're going to stop the virus is a few taken if i take it and everyone we know is ready to take care we need to protect the world. got a blank stock it's a killer to have you here introduce yourself to international audience tell them what. i write i am a yahoo news medical contributor and also the founder of an organization that deals with racial health and equity if. we are assuming that there is a vaccine yes can see already doctor have you seen that is it a problem yet. yes it's absolutely a problem even here in new york city we have about 30 percent over health care workers that have declined a bad scene so these are people who have seen patients with kobe who have cared for
7:54 am
dying patients and still are refusing the vaccine what other trends that we're seeing is that there are starting to ninety's where there are higher rates of vaccine hesitancy and one today in particular is that model of black america that had the most highest levels of vaccine hesitancy for certain reasons. i'm just looking at a report from the wealth health organization they are they know that facts is an issue and this is this is how they characterize it is sitting in your armchair you're reading a newspaper and there is a train about to come but here no i'm dissipating will that impact might be. you said to a variety of reasons why when some people wouldn't want to take a vaccine if you could prove that down what would you say it was from the circles that you are working. well i will say that in the circle that i am working and
7:55 am
there are there are several reasons why it is specially and why communities where seeing that there is a history and us i repeat history of medical experimentation i would suggest that just a simple a study where people were actually experimented on by the u.s. government but also there are groups of people people color here in the u.s. who experienced ongoing discrimination when they seek out help care and then i think also we saw an unprecedented level of political interference here in the work of our f.d.a. and our c.d.c. are our primary health organizations and the organizations that are responsible for back scene manufacturing and distribution and so i think a lot of those are some of the reasons why we're seeing these high rates of vaccine hesitancy that really need to be combative through extensive public health care that dispel a lot of the misinformation that's out there. i'm just looking at this pew study says it's
7:56 am
a journalist group the can and do surveys and they surveyed americans as push americans 62 percent comfortable about being one of the few groups of people to get a vaccine what have you seen in terms of the campaigns out. out that in order to make people feel more comfortable. you know to be honest i haven't seen much and this is where we are right into a significant problem that vaccine which the bell up to very quickly by all appearances if people have concerns about that i think those concerns are just and we are months behind an extensive public health we really should be seeing advertisements and information being conveyed in a culturally responsive way on social media i don't buy this is all trains i television and we still are not seeing that and so i think part of the problem that we have is that our state and local 'd public health departments don't have the resources and the flamby to get the job done to get that campaign died and we were
7:57 am
early need to get it out there because if people are not willing to take the vaccine that will just prolong this epidemic and no one wants that. there's something that leapt out at me to talk to from your twitter feed and it's this week reconfirm me that regardless of leadership we still may have had the most covert 19 deaths maybe not as many but still the highest we've gone full circle from the story we started with to the story that we've ended with what do you think the next 6 months is going to look like the country 19 in the united states just like the conductor i think i think the next 6 months are going to be our top that's not possible and where we are experiencing a surge but we're having a trickling out of our back scenes we're going to need federal state and local leadership to put restrictions in place our public safety we're going to need from the american public as well. thank you for talking to us about that scene hesitancy
7:58 am
in the united states makes a noise and joined us earlier to talk about the aggressive activists in hong kong and many still looking to our show really kind of cool train out as you know correspondent told me about the fallout from the trip to bill daley why it's and thank you but being one of today's discussion i think a sign of the 2 difference from studio scenics time. after unprecedented scenes of violence and chaos on capitol hill joe biden and pamela harris will be sworn into office but with a bitterly obstructive eye for the president and a continuing pandemic just how different will the traditional celebrations need to be special coverage of the u.s. presidential inauguration on al-jazeera when all that seems to matter is the headline what narratives and counter narratives obscure reality the listening post strips away the space race better the bias i don't covers the uncomfortable truths
7:59 am

lazier declares a state of emergency to curb a rise in corona virus infections the prime minister insists it's not a coup. in jordan this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up democrats in congress formally begin the process of impeaching donald trump calling him a threat to america. the u.s. puts cuba back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism a move that could frustrate future attempts by joe biden to revive peace with about what's. going on.
