arlen comes to terms with one of its most painful church scandals. thanks for joining us we begin in the u.s. for even as his presidency comes to a close donald trump faces renewed efforts to remove him from office in his 1st major address since the violence at capitol hill on january 6th trump toward a section of the border war with mexico he shrugged off attempts to invoke the 25th amendment and called attempts at impeachment a hoax. free speech is under assault like never before the 25th amendment is of 0 risk to me but will come back to haunt joe biden and the biden administration as the expression goes be careful what you wish for the

impeachment hoax is a continuation of the greatest and most vicious witch hunt in the history of our country and is causing tremendous anger and division and pain far greater than most people will ever understand which is very dangerous for the usa especially at this very tender time and now i'd like to briefly address the events of last week millions of our citizens watched on wednesday as a mob stormed the capitol and trashed the halls of government as i have consistently said throughout my administration we believe in respecting america's history and traditions not tearing them down we believe in the rule of law and not in violence or rioting. well mike hanna joins us live now from washington d.c. mike it was very interesting listening to the president because actually that bit that he said about the demonstrations the riots of capitol hill pretty much all he said he moved on to talk about the current virus vaccine soon after that what did
1:03 am
you make of the words that he used i mean he called the people amal but but then he also mentioned words like a hoax and dangerous for the united states if efforts to remove him from office continue. yes indeed president trump maintaining that attempts to impeach him or to invoke the 25th amendment are in some way destructive to the united states but this is all linked to his absolute insistence that he bears no responsibility for the violence that took place in the capital last week and describing that all those actions now being planned against him the call to invoke the 25th amendment or failing that impeachment process as a witch hunt or phrase that he used before the 1st time that he was impeached so certainly president continuing to absolve himself of any responsibility seeking to make an occasion to bring himself back into the public view following those events
1:04 am
last week this is a 1st time we've seen in public since the violence last wednesday but here's a 10 to recreate his presence in the public mind somewhat undercut by the fact that at the moment that he was speaking at the border wall there the f.b.i. and the attorney general of the united states were holding a news conference back here in d.c. . that's right i mean as you mentioned we did hear the f.b.i. in the past 2 hours investigating that see what kind of details that they provide about the investigation. well firstly it came as a surprise that it took so long for the f.b.i. and for the attorney general to hold any kind of media briefing about these events remembering that all of this took place last wednesday and there were many many questions that the public wanted an answer as to that being said a lot of detail was provided including the fact that the scale of this investigation is absolutely unprecedented the attorney general talking about the

capitol both inside and outside as one try ganti crime scene he says that more than $170.00 charges have already been laid against individuals and made the point though that initially it was decided to get charges pressed the soonest possible most of these charges are misdemeanors like trespass but he does not discount the possibility that further charges will be layered on in the weeks and indeed months ahead and he predicts that in the end hundreds of people are going to be charged with various crimes ranging as i said from trespass to and including potential murder so certainly this is a raft of investigation being conducted now the f.b.i. had been monitoring checkerboards before the events on january the 6th it had issued a warning to the joint terrorism task force here in d.c. about the network chatter but at the same time it was not possible says the f.b.i.
1:06 am
to actually s. attain where the individuals intended violence or whether it was just showing some sense of provider this is what the chief of the d.c. field office had to see. the f.b.i. receives enormous amounts of information intelligence in our job is to determine the credibility of viability of it under the laws and policies that govern f.b.i. investigations. we have to separate the aspirational from the intentional and determine which of the individuals saying despicable things on the internet or just practicing keyboard bravado well they actually have the intent to do harm in the latter we work diligently to identify them and prevent them from doing so. now he was attempting to explain why you sufficient warnings were not given to federal authorities in d.c. given the fact that there had been this chatter on the internet however he went on and started speaking about the investigation that followed those events of

wednesday once again backing up the attorney general in saying that this investigation is absolutely massive all 56 offices of the f.b.i. throughout the united states are involved and he pointed out that door is already being knocked on and it must be stressed as well a grand jury is already in place hearing evidence concerning these crimes i can now with the latest from washington d.c. mike thank you let's go to capitol hill now where the house of representatives will soon vote on whether to recommend to vice president mike pence that he invoke that 25th amendment or how does your caster is there 1st of all heidi what are they due to vote exactly and how is the process going. barbara it's likely that this resolution will pass this evening as you said it calls on mike pence the vice president to invoke the 25th amendment which would declare president trump unfit to remain in the office and hence could conceivably assume office immediately as the

sitting president help ever this is a resolution that really has no teeth it is nonbinding and it's still up depends whether or not to take that action and there has been 0 indication that he would do so so democrats have another option and this is perhaps their bigger plan impeachment and tomorrow is when the full house floor is likely to vote on that resolution which charges president with one article of impeachment accusing him of a citing violence against the u.s. government that too is expected to pass with more than 200 cals democrats co-sponsoring that article and perhaps up to a dozen republicans on the house who are. open to it as well and we're just getting reporting from the new york times that on the senate side republican leader mitch mcconnell is said to be pleased with the fact that trump has about 10 peached which would make him only the 1st president ever to be impeached twice during his term
1:09 am
now there were some heated debates earlier before the house rules committee of leading up to this to both that are coming and certainly republicans are divided on how much support to still give to the president with one of his most steadfast foot soldiers jim jordan of ohio still refusing to say that this election was not stolen he argued against democrats moving forward with the 25th amendment and with impeachment saying that that would cause more disunity in the country and this is how democratic congresswoman mary kay scallion responded. i very strongly believe that our country is in danger. every minute that this president stays in office if he had that character to do so after inciting this riot you should resign but clearly he doesn't and he won't so the next quickest way to remove him from office where he can to do damage is for the vice

president and cabinet to invoke the 20 amendment and this resolution is a resolution of unity asking for the good of the country the president take action. the crocodile tears about oh there's disunity when the president and some of the people who are testifying here today have for months stoked. claims that the election particularly in my home commonwealth of pennsylvania that there was something wrong with the election that somehow actually should have received those votes it's false. interim has said there is 0 risk that he would be removed by the 25th amendment saying be careful what you wish for to democrats who moved forward on that motion and barbour those are chilling words from the president given the flyers from right wing groups saying that if

congress moves to remove the president that there will be yet another armed uprising. it's a very tense situation i visual class to with the latest from capitol hill heidi thank you. police in the u.k. will get tougher a lockdown rule breakers as the country fights an infection surge and the police chief says people who breach restrictions are more likely to be fined while the home secretary says the current rules are tough enough but always on the review they have now been more than $83000.00 coronavirus there in the u.k. or paul brennan has been out and about in richmond in southwest london to gauge the mood of people there. the intervention of britain's most senior police officer into the discussion about corona virus or sections comes at a critical time just 24 hours after the chief medical officer pointed out that we

were perhaps entering in the u.k. the darkest period of this pandemic dame crusted addict the metropolitan police commissioner talking about parties house parties raves in railway arches and gambling parties as well in clear defiance of the restrictions that are in place it was preposterous she said that anybody can pretend to be unaware of the need for restrictions given the state of the current pandemic now here in richmond the infection rate is remarkably low around $245.00 cases per 100000 but that said we've been out asking people exactly how corrosive it is to see other people breaking the rules how much does their behavior impact your behavior. i think it's quite irresponsible if you want more honest opinion on it. it's plenty trying to party as paint painted on to see your friends to socialize and if the government asking you at this moment in time to to to. a distance and be compliant i think
1:13 am
it's a small thing to to ask and to do i think is an impossible situation i don't think we have a race particularly in richmond. but if you're young you you probably don't think it applies to you a few people breaking those rules and then impacting on a lengthy lockdown for the rest of us that are trying desperately to abide by them is a severely damaging. in fact despite headlines of illegal raves and illegal gatherings compliance with the coronavirus restrictions here in the u.k. is actually pretty high that said the police's move from engagement with gatherings to enforcement of fines and penalties is fraught with potential difficulties there's the resourcing issue for a start are there simply enough police officers in order to do that job and 2nd of
