country fillery says this exclusive report. a year ago journalists from chinese state media arrived in hand to cover a story about a mysterious new virus is 3 days before the city goes into lockdown. the few confirmed cases of the disease are up to seafood market so one this is a business just a little on the i don't want to toss you there we have concealed the generally side entities for their own safety they soon realize the outbreak is much more serious than they thought it was either a reporter who we've called yang continues to film secretly after being detained by the police are not all caught her with his own words your thought was a mobile call that only through friends and threw a party or showed upon exults a mile out when one of their own lives inside is an. yang is forced to show images on his camera to public security officers while doing so he continues to film on
1:03 pm
his phone. while china's response to the virus was laid to praise the lack of openness at the beginning of the outbreak has been blamed for contributing to our failure to contain the disease ever. yang is blocked from entering hospitals all see if it was the human being loaded into little or little on what is really the little boy did in order to enter young pretends to have a fever. and. a heart. he finds packed wards with patients waiting to get tested. this was just one week after the disease had been given a name 19. a woman brought to simply 8 year old grandfather to the gates of the hospital he'd already been turned away from one that had no more beds ok me if you want me. there are just wouldn't let him in that should have you got. to see that
1:04 pm
a little now the new offices stop young filming even at the hospital gates thing by the way is a would have been going on the lockdown is announced at 2 am on january 23rd yang is told to return to beijing before it comes into force the next morning. the roads to the airport and railway station are packed with taxis young joins 300000 people who left will hand that night the decision to provide an 8 hour window before the city is sealed off allows many infected patients to flee and for the outside world . fill race al-jazeera. ok let's stay with the explosive report joining us here in the news analyst thomas who is an associate professor of political science and international relations at city university in hong kong he's also an expert in health security in asia nicholas thomas welcome to the news of the outgoing u.s.
1:05 pm
secretary of state mike pompei o once a deeper dive into the reality of how and when what happened actually began all of their more profound questions to be honest than we are likely to get from the w.h.o. inquiry i think that the true nature of the outbreak where to originated how it sort of came about we never really probably be known at this stage because we're looking at this a year later as you mentioned. there is certainly some questions to be asked as to that initial cluster not the ones that were shown on strain but earlier than that in december where the 1st case we've got recorded didn't have any connection with the wet market and indeed if you look at the december outbreak there's about half roughly half of all cases have no connection with that wet market so finding out how and why this fire was able to jump the species barrier and when it did so is
1:06 pm
going to be a critical question that w.h.o. is going to be pursuing ok briefly when you talk about that key market they're investigating or not to get some ounces to do with what the chinese traders in that market would doing with livestock so that's the sort of 1st port of call of the world health organization there but a year on realistically what's the point. well the question will then be what is the data which the chinese authorities are currently holding from the early period some of that has already been shed but we don't know if all of that has been so this would be one area for them to look at realistically this is a mission which should have been undertaken a good 6 months ago if not earlier that was the mission back in july but unfortunate w.h.o. team wasn't allowed to go to war han. that would have been
1:07 pm
a very good opportunity to share the early data but it wasn't taken up ok data relating to the tree that might pump a 0 is talking about that has been deleted that's a fact that is sparking fresh accusations over a coverup that have been circulating just in the past few days in both the australian and the british media. yeah i mean the institute for all of g. has been on the front line of a lot of the conspiracy theories that the americans have particularly under the trumpet ministration have been putting out in reaction china has been closing itself off now i do think that had a more collaborative approach been undertaken which was there were necking isms for this sort of cooperation under the previous u.s. administration then there would have been a more open dialogue the fact that it's being caught up and so heavily politicized will inevitably distort our understanding of the early origins of the virus
1:08 pm
but it's very very i think it's important not to get caught up in the what ifs and maybes but just to be led by science because if there's one lesson that this outbreak has really taught us it's that when politics gets involved instead of science is when mistakes stop getting night and when we start seeing clusters in infections and in iraq but at the moment when we get to the science of the origins of the outbreak i mean clearly china does not want to look in its own rearview mirror with this so i think it's safe to say isn't it there is a a difference between the official version from beijing and what might possibly and i stress the word possibly might have happened round about the end of last year but the year before kind of october november december time. i think it's very clear to say i think it's very fair to say that there is
1:09 pm
a gap between what we know from the data to date and what is being circulated by different officials in different capitals i think it's narrowing that gap narrowing that gap which is a key. indicator of success not just for the w.h.o. team in country but also for china to show that it is actually committed to an open process in this regard ok always great to get your opinion on this all new going global event i guess we can call it nicholas thomas there in hong kong thank you very much for awhile thank you. and you can watch the full al-jazeera investigation 3 days that stop the world on monday at $27.00 of course it's available via the website. well the head of the world health organization has warned of a quote catastrophic moral failure in the way vaccines are being distributed around the world it's the w h o's latest condemnation of the wealthy countries being accused of hoarding doses leaving the developing countries without the world is on the brink of
1:10 pm
a catastrophe moral failure. and the prize of this failure will be paid with lives and livelihoods in the world's poorest countries. fears of an insider attack prompted the f.b.i. all $25000.00 national guard troops being deployed to washington d.c. now this huge undertaking reflects extraordinary security concerns gripping the u.s. capitol to president elect joe biden's inauguration and that some of the very people assigned to protect the city could represent a threat. one of the things that i think we're learning and lessons learned is that . we all need to take those credible threats seriously and we're prepared to do we need to do in order to support the citizens of our of our nation and our citizen soldiers you know we all come from different backgrounds different walks of life
1:11 pm
and we have different ideas but what we've done this uniform we have one mission and hand and that is to to do what is necessary to protect america. and that's adding to the tensions that have already put the capitol and the white a united states on edge as john hendren reports from washington. the u.s. capitol is surrounded by sirens steel and soldiers in a military occupation never before seen in the american capital 25000 national guard troops secure the national mall that's twice the number here after the 1968 assassination of martin luther king jr and then there are the thousands of u.s. capitol police city police f.b.i. border patrol and others. the mob assault on the capitol on january 6th shown here in a video released sunday by the new yorker magazine has left a city and a nation grappling with the aftermath of an insurrection fearing another possible assault on democracy and traumatized. i think it's
1:12 pm
going to be better because i think. joe biden's january 20th inauguration comes with crowds reduced by the pandemic on ground trampled by a riot under the shadow of his predecessors 2nd impeachment. pennsylvania avenue is usually one of the busiest thoroughfares in washington d.c. now it is the center of a green zone a security area that stretches 3 kilometers from capitol hill behind me to the potomac river this is now a city in lockdown. everyone entering the largest secure a zone in presidential inauguration history is screened for weapons inside fences upon fences steel steel just as it seemed the center of the city was entirely barricaded workers bring in still more fortifications every manhole cover is sealed against threats from below now this city's most iconic street is

a park for runners roller bladers and pedestrians enduring a historic evil my heart. i don't know what to do. so. i couldn't go. for it so. i think you're doubt that i could walk this way. across the u.s. the f.b.i. warns of possible armed protests outside all 50 state capitals following the armed invasion in april of the michigan state house. as federal agents scour the country for those who invaded the houses of congress arresting this nashville tennessee man on sunday the u.s. prepares for what most americans hope will be a peaceful handover of government power even as it braces for another assault john hendren al jazeera washington coming up here on the news for you the internet is back up in uganda after the government's switch everything off last week on the eve

of the presidential election. do or die votes in parliament for its unease prime minister can his fragile coalition cling on to power we'll have a live update from rome. and you don't see this look on that man's face very often we'll have more on that a little later with a sportsman's. the head of the south korean tech giant samsung has been jailed for 2 and a half he is jay wiley was found guilty of bribery and best moment in connection with the corruption scandal that brought down the former president park geun again he was jailed in 2017 and it's verdicts the court said instantly provided elicit payments to poc and asked to help smooth his succession at the head of the company samsung let's talk now to b.j. kim in seoul he's a partner at kale and consulting and formerly a policy counsel of the south korean ministry of trade industry and energy b.j.
1:15 pm
came just to be clear here some so is one of south korea's fiscal economic cornerstones what we're talking about today is that big of a deal yet. yes it is it is very big and on the conservative side there have been strong voice for giving him some leniency from the court because the the the role of time zone that takes up within the korean economy is so big and so there has been such a perspective on the conservative side but on the progress side and perhaps the majority have been thinking that you know the personal responsibilities of jay leno on the side when something has done wrong. and has the head of some some himself or he might have to take the responsibility for what had happened repetition of the old practice that needs to get over with so there has been lots of debate about
1:16 pm
this this is a one of the most important issue coming out of the country even though the president had a years beginning year of you know start of the conference call conference press conference but it was really covered these jail sentencing was the public the news what does this say about corporate governance in south korea. corporate governance has come a long way in this country has been working on corporate content governance for the last 2 decades and samsung has been in the center of the whole debate and the reason why chile is in jail today tonight is because some some was dragging its feet while other smaller chamber companies have taken steps to improve their corporate governance practices this was several years of course and i know and we understand something has come a long way since then for the past several years you know the record by all the problems ever since ever since this happened that change being
1:17 pm
a cheerleader being. accounted for but i thought things have been changing a lot but some zone is the biggest presence here in korea had been dragging its feet and now it's paying for the price has always wanted to get well well ahead of its big international competitors does this ruling today impact the possibility of that absolutely not something is a global organization and global education should not be and he's not run by an individual so of course you know if when there is a person figure in the pup decisions could be made easier but i really strongly do not believe at all that cheerleaders absence from his top additional will affect some sales performance at all i don't see that only because of the thompson's track record and you know it's interesting irony but the cynics points out which is not
1:18 pm
my personal view of the cynics point out that when sort of jail he was in jail last time some song short a wonderful performance that's corporations so yes you know my answer is no there is will be no correlation between. these presence or absence and then on the one hand and then some of those problems as a corporation when the other d.j. came in so thank you very much. there's a rage from world capitals after the russian opposition leader alexina was arrested moments after he landed back in moscow germany where not only spent 5 months recovering having been poisoned describes his detention as in comprehensible adding that novell needs should be released immediately the european council president describes the detention as unacceptable and the u.s. secretary of state mike pompei o says it's the latest attempt to silence voices critical of moscow has rory chalons its eggs a particular type of person to survive
1:19 pm
a probable state sanctioned poisoning and then returned to the country you believe tried to kill you a country where you face imminent arrest. never gave the slightest suggestion he would do anything else following months of recuperation in germany alexei and wife yulia took their seats on a moscow bound plane from berlin. put it in a monopoly boy bring us a little vodka we're flying home says yulia quoting a much loved russian gangster movie it's a never alley hole mark that he and his family make light of the many dangers they face and what he faced was jail on arrival he violated his suspended sentence by leaving russia to receive life saving treatment he makes a choice is a brave man because he always pretended he's a brave man who. has no fear before that gorgeous it's no iraq and he has no fear of law and order machine
1:20 pm
now it's the time to prove. prove these claims. and show the deeds that's why he states brought. well he diminish his claims being well. and pray for position at the airport where he was due to land police detained members of his team and threw supporters out around his plane was then diverted to another moscow airport away from the crowds after landing he spoke to the journalists who traveled with him yeah absolutely not i am not afraid i feel ok walking free immigration i will pass it and go home because i know that i am right and i don't need a criminal case against me had been forged so scary story that they have tried to scare me wave it is not only the truth by my side but also to quote us. butt out passport control officer
1:21 pm
a goodbye kiss with his wife police led the valley away the kremlin denies the f.s.b. had any role in last year's novacek poisoning that nearly kills the opposition leader but now it seems likely russia will jail no brownie for surviving it rory chalons al-jazeera. to moscow and zeroes alexandra gold for alexandra where is he now and what happens to him next. well it's therms out that he is now in court there is a court session being organized in the police the tension center where where he's been held of which he was informed he says in a video distributed by his press secretary only minutes before it started now this court in session is to determine whether he will stay on the rearrest until the court hearing on violating his probation or whether they will let him be in a house arrest which is not very likely because of this prison service of russia
1:22 pm
that arrested him on the airport yesterday he is asking for him to be kept on there a lot can key until the hearing they are saying that he violated the terms of his suspended sentence and that requiring him to be now put in the jail in the in this video distributed said that he didn't know anything about this he saying what sort of a thing is this to have a court in a police station and i didn't have time to speak with my lawyers so the court will decide about whether he stays on the arrest or some other measure will be taken against him during the during the day and in the meantime the russian minister of foreign affairs says that the whole no riley case is actually a case of for a law it's a case for the law enforcement's and it's not
1:23 pm
a foreign policy matters what he says is that it's been made artificially a foreign policy matter and that the best bait so much attention in order to distract attention from their own prices of course here in russia they keep on claiming that since they found no evidence in russia itself of any poisoning then there is no grounds to you or to open a criminal investigation into what happened in the via in the in august this last year xander thanks very much alexander got from in moscow. the government of uganda has restored internet access across the country it has been cut off since the eve of the presidential election last week now the official results show president yoweri missed 70 easily won a 6th term but opposition candidate bobby wine promised to provide evidence of voter fraud when the internet was reconnected catherine soy joins us live now from camp so the internet is back up and running katherine how and when do we think
1:24 pm
bobby wine will release this information that he says he has under house arrest in effect in his property there as to how corrupt or not the election was. well that's really the big question. the wind has been saying officials all his party the national unity platform have also been saying that they have evidence of widespread irregularities of you know every dance of rigging in favor of president yoweri in which 70 there was a press conference that was held yesterday and officials of his party said that they are going to be moving to court they have 10 days to put together the evidence and presented before the supreme court so they're saying that they're going to do that even if they do not trust the court system they say they don't trust the constitutional judges that doctors at the supreme court to give them a fair hearing we haven't hard much from bobby wind since friday when he rejected
1:25 pm
the resolve he's still effectively being surrounded by soldiers who have been there for the last few days he says that he cannot leave his house visitors are not allowed to access his compound we also saw that as journalists we were blocked from accessing his compound several times but they do say they have evidence we have the time and again what evidence do you have how are you going to present it they said once the internet is back on the plane to present that evidence it's going to be interesting to see what kind of evidence they have to back that plate claims very briefly catherine would there be more trust in the election process there if the election observers had been more than just the african union because nobody else was allowed into the country to see what was going on. yes there was an african union
1:26 pm
that was the regional body east africa community as well but again people don't trust these bodies they say that they always come out with results. a report saying that the election has been free and fair so uganda the thought to say we don't not trust these african bodies but we have had peter from the east africa community the regional body they have presented the preliminary reports and they have raised various concerns including the internet shut down they say that this infringes on the rights of the people we've also heard from the u.s. who have not did not observe this election because most of the observers were not a pretty fed and we've also that also our independent log home observer missions but many of them were not accredited as well so yes this makes people question the credibility of this election makes people question the transparency of it but then we did speak to electoral commission officials who said that the people of the observers that they created it sufficed and they believe the electoral commission
1:27 pm
believes that it has run a credible election peter catherine many thanks catherine sawyer correspondent reporting live for the news from kampala. plenty more still to come for you including the stories we look at the growing push for independence in scotland in the wake of bragg's it and the global pandemic. and in sports and you chapter in the career of this world champion football all the details in about 15 minutes. how is the weather remains basically cold across a good parts of europe as signs of pushing into the west as we go on through the next couple of days well these weather fronts rolling in from the atlantic it will turn some away and somewhat. windier the matter with a lot when it's essential parts cold weather to be clear skies for them frost

corruption scandal that brought down the former president park geun hey he was jailed in 2017. fears of an insider attack a product of the f.b.i. to vet all $25000.00 national guard troops being deployed to washington the huge undertaking reflects extraordinary security concerns gripping the u.s. capitol ahead of joe biden's inauguration. the world will be watching to see how quickly mr biden's administration will unwind donald trump's foreign policy agenda after 4 years of america 1st washington's closest partners are eager to see the u.s. pivot back towards international engagement but the new president will face an uphill battle perhaps to restore trust with key allies diplomatic it as a james bays reports now from washington. from the moment he took office it was clear the administration of donald trump would be very different from. this day forward
1:32 pm
a new vision will govern our land from this day forward it's going to be only america 1st it didn't take long for the united states as our allies to realize that meant they were now dealing with the most disruptive president since world war 2 straining the system of international order built over 75 years trump moved quickly to dismantle the achievements of the obama administration at odds with all his closest allies he pulled out of the paris climate deal believe me this is not what we need and then the iran nuclear agreement this was a horrible one sided deal later in the midst of the pandemic he withdrew the us from the world health organization today terminating our relationship with the world health organization and not only did he pull the us out of the un human rights council the head the critical and self-serving organization front rarely
1:33 pm
ever stood up for human rights and at times he seemed more comfortable with the u.s. is traditional adversaries than its closest allies we now know from some of his advisors he came close to pulling out of the us is most important military alliance a nato summit meetings like this one in brussels awkward events with everyone else treading on eggshells to avoid the ire of the impulsive often ill informed u.s. leader most u.s. allies around the world are now breathing a sigh of relief despite the drama after november's election president elect joe biden's foreign policy is easy to summarize reverse direction resign international agreements and work collaboratively with allies america is back. ready to lead the world not retreat from it once again sit at the head of the table ready to confront our adversaries and not reject our allies ready to stand up for our values the
1:34 pm
relationship the presidents before trump built with their allies was based on trust it's a commodity that takes a long time to grow but is easy to lose and that's the problem for the biden administration the u.s. is closest allies will be looking over their shoulder wondering whether in 4 years time trump will be back and if it's not him it could be another president with trump like america 1st policy is james al-jazeera washington. ok let's get more on that story for you joining us live on the news our al-jazeera senior political analyst marwan bashar talking to us from doha talk show again foreign policy narrative comes down to personal skills as to interpersonal skills so does that mean that mr biden is going to get on with everyone because he's been around the block for so long now. well certainly his 48 year experience in politics and in foreign affairs does give
1:35 pm
him. an extra asset if you were over both his predecessor and his predecessor's put this after meaning president obama and president trump he does have the experience there's no doubt both in washington and in the world and i think that's going to serve him really well to do the things that he said that he will do he will he will move in court confidently he will as it were you know the ground running and that's why as we've heard from various reports in the for his 1st year in office he will be signing a whole number of executive orders patched one of them including ending the ban on muslim muslim majority countries are with the united states and a whole bunch of others that are informed and for him to restore. that faith in america for america's greatness or if i may use the expression peter to make
1:36 pm
america great again after its decline on the trunk you can say that one time and one time only will let you away with it this time do you think his focus though will be led by ideology or will it be led by issues i mean you and i are old enough to remember see jimmy carter jimmy carter like to cherry pick issues around the world much to the annoyance of his own political base sometimes he put human rights at the center of his international the international aspect of his administration well mr biden have to do the same kind of thing. well that's the thing president carter for example wasn't that that the total outsider that he was and you know little known governor of georgia not much no one outside the state and till he really broke out of after the disasters years of of next right what we have here something completely different by then is the antithesis of
1:37 pm
an outside that he is the ultimate insider and that's why i think it's going to be less about if ya logy and more about the continuity of american leadership and the world of american leadership of the liberal order in the world which means mainstream liberal foreign policy which means restoring as biden calls it the spirit of america and what is the spirit of america well it is civility at least claiming to respect human rights not to be such a mean president as president trump was known to be so in order to restore what by the likes to call american leadership in the world he's going to have to restore america's alliances around the world that again president trump has trampled all over and order to do that he's going to have to have some program of some sort for the time being what we know it's going to be the antithesis of trump meaning yes
1:38 pm
building alliances going back to some of the important agreement including climate change the iran nuclear deal and perhaps some new nuclear deals with a lot to russia and china reassert america's leadership over an international institutions that's sort of a continuing of mainstream liberal american policy which i think it is in some way to logical but it does not continue with your almost half a century of that ok if he does score some real international successes here when he gets beyond the blitzkrieg of executive orders unpicking the early days of the trump administrator. how much of that will be tinge to with or driven by nostalgia not nostalgia in the united states but nostalgia around the world because they does seem to be a genuine need for a more thoughtful a kinder gentler washington when it comes to how it interacts with other
1:39 pm
heads of government around the planet. well yes and i think that's a bit to where the part of the paradox lies on the one hand america's allies notably notably in europe and southeast asia would like a sort of the return of america or story of american leadership because that does support them against their nemesis what the china in the south china sea or whether it is russia when it comes to europe but just to be clear america's policy has not always been kind and nice and wonderful just you know our recent memory we recall the wars in iraq and the wars in afghanistan and so also for the bad guys couldn't get more than its share. of wars and from crimes and so on so for than the world which of course president obama admitted. as much so in so many ways yes it is about restoring govern egypt but in so many other ways to restore credibility.
1:40 pm
that's going to take time because i think the europeans for example have already made their peace with the fact that they're going to have to go it alone. if need be that whatever the future relations with washington it can it cannot go back to the tree trunk years only that europe is going to have to be treated with mutual respect and mutual interest that germany and france and europe as a whole has you know superpower interest as it were and so they're not going to trust just the words of right then they're not going to trust words in general they going to have to look and they will look be looking for deeds meaning not just executive orders but how biden will rebuild alliances 'd how we will he go back and need and support financial and otherwise major international students like the you know school like the international human rights council like the like the

climate change an initiative and so so forth it doesn't look from that for the for example let's say climate change he only put an emissary and not just anyone john kerry which which you know if if if if foreign policy is decided by a broad mix clearly some of his appointments do signal a certain seriousness in tackling some of the important global challenges facing america and the world i suspect we'll talk about this a lot over the coming few hours few days as well my one many thanks now on bashar the our senior political analyst. the governor of sudan's west of 4 states says security is being stepped up after tribal fighting killed more than 80 people buildings have been satellites in west off or state capital the governor of doma says at least 160 people have been injured he blames armed groups from central and south toll for the violence has forced many people to leave the region.

parliament peter as you said there he's trying to convince them to get the votes the numbers to give him that vote of confidence to continue will be setting out an agenda he'll be trying to speak to those perhaps that are undecided but i think the general consensus is that perhaps today he will get that vote of confidence more controversial and unpredictable is tomorrow at the senate peacher where he still seems to have not quite got the numbers adding up to given that vote of confidence he'll also be speaking to them so everything is up in the air and as you mentioned it comes following the withdrawal of midair renzi 2 of his cabinet ministers from the party complaining that he doesn't agree with how the funds of the european union over 200000000000 euros will be spent a lot of back and forth happening here is certainly very potential very real political crisis you mentioned there one of this in ours if he doesn't get that vote tomorrow is yes a technical government snap elections this year of course that's something that no

one really wants at a time of corona this is a country still battling with that or a new prime minister appointed by the president to then has to form a new government but certainly the timing of this. is couldn't come at a worse time a lot of people criticizing what they were enzi as well for having pulled out at this point in time how are people reacting to this because that the timeline in the timing of this as you say couldn't come of the worst time and it's really suffering again with covert 19. well it depends who you speak to but i think generally people do think there's a lot of theater when it comes to tie in politics peter i know a lot of people will say that this is not the time this is a time for politicians to come together and to try and fix it this is a country with soaring public debt we've been speaking to shop owners restaurant owners over the past week or so people are desperate it's been a terrible year people have lost so much money we've just had the lockdowns extended what does that mean it means most of italy is under what's called an orange zone that means restaurants and bars cannot open at all to the public they

could huge never in take away but certainly in a culture as you know preternaturally people sit together they need together hugely dependent on tourism there are no tourists here because also it's very limited who can come into the country only europeans at the moment and they have to self quarantine so it's a desperate situation i think has been sold the numbers are still high so i don't see that you know this big question mark as to when it comes to the direction of the country in terms of who's going to run it how the money is going to be allocated. people are saying that that perhaps was not exactly the right thing to do now but certainly the train has left the station i think we'll know by tomorrow where where it's going to go ok thanks very much steph tucker reporting live for the news from rome. with european politics breaks it was always unpopular in scotland its people voted by a majority to stay with in the e.u. even as the rest of the u.k. tipped the balance towards leaving now the realities of brics it coupled with the london government's handling of the covert pandemic could put new energy behind

calls for scottish independence to the scottish capital edinburgh and my colleague jonah hole sojourner there does seem to be rising public support for a fully independent scotland again. looks that way let me point you to the latest opinion poll taken just last week that shows 57 percent support for independence now and that's not just one poll they've been a whole string of these opinion polls leading up to and since the end of the year the end of last year when the wind breaks and itself became final in real when the economic shape of bragg's it vajra trade deal with the e.u. became real and indeed it's had very painful consequences for scotland's seafood exporters in particular not a member as you said there are a majority of scots never wanted breaks it in the 1st place they feel they've been forced against their will by westminster into the hardest form of brigs it now and so perhaps unsurprisingly this rising clamor for another opportunity to vote for

independence. edinburgh's royal mile deserted under lockdown but with just a fee deco of events that have taken place here over the past decade marching for scottish independence before a referendum in which scots voted to remain part of the united kingdom and later voting for continued membership of the european union but breaks it has changed everything and independence is once more in the air what we were told at that time was that if we stayed in the united kingdom it would be staying in the you know in union rights as e.u. citizens would be respected and that's been completely ignore the opportunity no has been in and some rationale and a referendum on independence that you can see you know to realize that that is our destiny and ask the people. on the scottish parliament in order to achieve that
1:48 pm
prime minister boris johnson treats calls for another referendum on independence with this day we had a referendum on the issue in 2014 which senior members of your party perhaps what you said was a once in a generation event it was on that basis the people voted in the way that they did very substantially to keep our wonderful union together boris johnson is loathed by scottish nationalists who see him as the embodiment of for exit and intitled englishman who pays only lip service to the importance of the union so his pitch to build back better together after the pandemic rings hollow here among those who voted heavily to remain in the european union and who now would vote to leave the united kingdom but there's a catch the very thing breaks it that has taken support for independents to new heights is also the thing that makes independents see economically viable so one on one hand breaks that acts as and is as an accelerator on independence preferences

big. as people are not happy not being in the european union but at the same time an independent scotland outside of the e.u. but also finding that has difficulty trading with with its former trade partners in the terms and in the form of the rest of the u.k. well that that also is it is a problem that makes people want independence more but it makes in some ways the economic consequences of independence far more severe than they were in 24 it seem but those arguments haven't dented voting intentions yet 18 opinion polls in a row show a firm lead for independence and an expected landslide win for the scottish nationalists in may's parliamentary election could yet create an unstoppable democratic force. now even if those opinion polls continue to hold up and even if the scottish national party as expected wins its biggest victory ever in

parliamentary elections in may that doesn't automatically guarantee a yes win if indeed there is to be another vote on the question of independence and that's because of that economic conundrum that i outlined there now take the scottish langoustine industry as an example struggling now to get its product to markets in the e.u. to france because of new trade rules because of red tape consider that they move that product through english ports indeed a lot of that product is sold in england and you get this picture of an independent scotland outside of the e.u. outside of the u.k. and key with no guarantee of being able to reenter the european union as an independent nation and that all could be economically ruinous which is why one hollier that i spoke to preparing to set off with his load of langoustine trying to get it to france said in his heart he believes in india independence in his head not so much. turner thanks very much. coming up

a 6 nil win over some. matches united have stayed top of the english premier league after a draw with liverpool for reigning champions liverpool it's 4 league games without a win their 4th in the table and trail united by 3 points of course the players have deserved the results. their mood is getting better to believe us there you know coleman away from here would one point players are disappointed but it's a good feeling that there's a home there in this team. football fans in general are not the most patient species patient species on this planet so they want to win each. football game i'm not too different to that but i'm long enough in the business to know that you have to go through 2 more difficult periods as well and it's not the most of my life not even close to it and n.f.l. superstar quarterback tom brady is on track for his 7th super bowl championship
